I have the archos g9 turbo 250GB. I'm using gonemad media player. It seems since upgrading to the latest firmware - 4.0.28 - my music is skipping. I see the little hard drive icon in the corner when it skips, which I believe means media scan is in progress. Is there a way to stop that from running? I don't think it was a problem with 4.0.7, but I haven't had any success in downgrading. Maybe cyanogenmod wouldn't have that installed and work better?

You COULD try going into Settings=>Apps and disable MediaCenter, but that may not solve everything.
Since I've never had the 250GB HDD model I really can't say for sure just what works or doesn't on those devices. Only thing I can tell you honeslyt is that once you've ever upgraded to any 'official' Archos 4.0.2x version you are pretty much ROYALLY SCREWED!
Even trying to install an older 'rooted' stock 4.0.7 will still end up with some leftover problems. Some you can clear up, others are just still going to be there. I suspect it has something to do not only with other crap Archos added into their firmware, but also with how they changed to a higher underlying Linux kernel (there's a difference between that Linux kernel and the Android kernel... I hate the whole layering of things involved).
Best bet is to try and clean up things with a 'rooted' stock 4.0.7 firmware (not a customized ROM).
As for CyanogenMod... forget it!!! Although there is work on that, you have to understand that Archos devices are set up in a NON-standard way to start with. As such, it's extremely hard to ever do what others can easily do on most OTHER Android devices.
I assume you bought the 250GB HDD model for 'media' storage, which is fine if that's what you wanted to use it for. I never bought one simply because I'd rather have more room for 'apps' (media I can stream wi-fi from my computers). I have some games that are over 1GB that I could never install on the 250GB model (because it has less than 2GB of flash for app storage, the HDD is only for user 'media' files). Not saying I wouldn't mind having one, but it's just not what I was looking for at the time (just don't need to have that much of any 'media' files with me all the time... got microSD cards and USB devices for the few times I do need a few things).

Hm, I may need to get 4.0.7 re-installed, I was having problems rolling back before. Tried disabling the mediacenter, but that didn't do it. I mainly use the archos to listen to mp3s in the car, I'm hoping someone will release 128GB 7-8" flash android tablets sometime this year.

If this is the wrong section I apologize. I just picked up the Archos 48 Internet tablet with the DVR station off of the Archos Store. I thought $299 was a good deal with the free dvr station.
First hand reviews. This is my second archos, i used to have the old school 160gb so i am familiar with its defaults and capabilities.
Battery Life - not a huge concern for me, its normally plugged in. But i got a good 5 hours of out of it with wifi on.
Hard drive - 500gb - perfect for the music/video collector
OS - 1.6 - Weird, just weird. It works, and I understand it, but there are some drawbacks, and maybe you folks can help.
1. I installed appslib and the amazon app store(works perfect). However, you can only install apps to the system space, not the hard drive. So there is a limit to having apps on there. Once i got the 3rd angry birds on it, it yelled at me and said no space available. There is 500gb????? Can if be used?
2. Can you put 2.2/froyo or 2.3/GB?
3. Rooting??? Can it be done? Maybe its too new?
Sync - Special usb cable. Looks like you have to use the micro usb that comes with it. If you use a different one, the files will not sort correctly. Sounds funny, but Putting it in hard drive mode is easier/quicker for me. When I used a standard one, the cover art would not list in the Cover's section when searching for music, however all the music is under the Hard Drive section and I could listen to it all and cover art showed. Not a big deal, just weird.
Browser - Works fine, I would like to install a different one, but I am having problems putting the Android App Market on there. Any ideas?
Firmware is the most updated one.
If anyone can help, or lend ideas, please let me know
Jon
From what I understand, the Archos 48 IT is sort of a rehash of the Archos 5 IT, which was a Gen 7 device. Any info you can find on the Archos 5 IT should apply. Check out ArchosFans and OpenAOS for more. This section is for Gen 8 devices, so I don't think anything you find here will be very helpful. Good luck!
I can help you a bit i had have the A5IT
1) You cant increase the internal storage (for apps) yet, but the guys from openaos maybe work on that at a costum rom
2) there are some 2.0/2.1 and maybe some 2.2 ports too but they are buggy from my last view i have sold my archos 5, bought a new one you should ask the guys from openaos
3) same answer as in 1) & 2)
Xda isnt for gen7, its for gen8 the best gen7 communitys are archoslounge, archos forum and for the hacking sections (most interesting for you ) openaos
Hi,
I've almost made decision to buy 101 gen8 for my girlfriend as a first (budget) tablet, but just wanted to ask for your opinion. Especially for specific issues/limitations that gen8 might have as opposed to G9.
I had 101 G9 for a couple of days for testing and we liked it. But it's a more expensive option and not really offering that much more I think. To sum up differences:
1. On G8 real-use speed (processor) should be fine, not much worse than G9 I hope
2. screen not much worse according to reviews ? (apart from the angles which are told to be much worse)
3. one less usb port in G8, not a big issue (the G8 port should work with 3G stick too I presume)
4. no GPS in G9, not that needed here too
5. android version and ram available- and this might be an issue as only ICS might be available and not officially I guess -what are the clear advantages of honeycomb over froyo? I still don't know..
6. flash support- on G9 it generally worked in websites, on gen8 I'll have to mess with it I guess and the result will still be worse ? Is it a different flash version or just less working due to system ?
7. firmware/rom issues - I read in some posts there were some unresolved issues couple of months ago in G8. What is the current state of buggy-ness there considering newest updates? :/
8. anything else? battery performance looks to be about the same..
Thanks
G9 is much better, at least for me...
I had a 101 Gen8 for about 1 Year, and now I have a Gen9 80, and for me it is much better :
- G9 CPU has 2 Cores, G8 only 1
- Screen is much better
- My USB Host Port on G8 was broken after 1 Month, this happens a lot (read Forum), 3G on G8 works if you install UrukDroid, not in Stock Rom (Drivers missing)
- All G9 has GPS
- Android 3.2.1 is better for tablet, and in real Live it's true
- On my G8 101, I never had Deep Sleep, that means my Battery drains fast in Standby. That was the biggest Issue for me and the reason why I changed.
On G9 I have Deep Sleep
Have Fun...

yep, I saw these reports about usb. does it mean the hardware just stopped working ? what about your experiences of the warranty service of Archos ?
regarding the deep sleep I saw that in 2.4... (I think) firmware update it was finally working, or not ?
with new gen8 firmware
the Archos 3g dongle working on 101 gen8
yes the USB Host stops working, nothing happens on plug in USB Device.
My Last G8 Firmware was 2.4.80, and with this no Deep Sleep.
Remark : with the Cyanogen Mod from AOS, deep sleep is working, but in the Beta there are other Issues.
For a Month ago I decided to contact Archos Support about my two Issues (USB and Deep Sleep), I wrote the an Email and no arnswer until today
My Lucky was that I bought it by Amazon, I send the Device to Amazon and after 3 Days I became the Full Money Back. Since this, I am a big Fan from Amazon
With this Money I bought my new Gen 9 80...

usb died on my 101 as well. I mainly use it for surfing, so haven't sent in for warranty support yet. To get an RMA for your device it is best to call, as they are very slow responding to mail.
Screen on Gen 9 is way better than Gen 8 101. Also, unless rooted, there is a limit on the apps partition in Gen 8, so if you want to install a lot of apps and don't want to root, you may run up against this. I am not a heavy apps user, but I did run up against this limitation. No apps limitation, in gen 9.
Also, more RAM on Gen 9. Browser on Gen 8 frequently shuts down if you have too many pages open.
The gen 8 is still a good device for the money, but does have some limitations. Btw, I have the Gen 9 80, not the 101
OK can you just clarify what's the situation with flash support on gen8 ? is it working fine on websites after installing/upgrading to what is needed ?

Flash 10.3 works best on my gen8. However it is very stuttery when trying to play video from amazon. Flash 11 is worse. I am using flash 11 on my gen 9 and movies play much smoother.
You tube app on gen8 works fine.
You might look at http://forum.archosfans.com/index.php.
Now I'm confused. there's a problem with availibility locally with 101 gen8 and I found out about arnova 10 g2 (or 10b g2 which seems only different externally and weighs more) - these have 1ghz ARM like 101 but 512mb are told to be generally fast with 2.3stock and can play full hd
also may have better screen (IPS?). downsides are lack of bt and hdmi, but these are not that needed in my case
Not sure about battery life, not much detailed reviews on 10 G2 found
(Concerning emails to archos) Just send the mail twice, or 3 times and they will answer quickly, at least that's my experience with contacting them...

Did you see it in real ? I'd suggest to try to see all models running before taking a decision. G2 is IPS, but I've seen one and it appeared poor quality to me, certainly not equivalent to Samsung/Motorola or even Acer
I didn't have the 101 gen8 at the same time to compare, but in my memory they feels about the same quality.
my personal feeling regarding screen quality is: Gen9 > 70 Gen 8 > 101 Gen8, Arnova G2.
Regarding processing power, don't take ARM and GHZ value as a criteria. All of them are ARM, and GPU / # of cores / SOC (I'd say in this order for Android) are more interesting criteria.
Memory is a very important criteria, 512 MB memory is good, the 256 of Gen8s are a bit low.

I've also received quite fast responses but it seems me and the (I guess french) party on the dark side kinda did not get a point together )
I saw a lot of videos on the internet talking about the SGS III's ability for OTG USB connections and I decided to try them out. While I was able to run a PSX Controller, a wireless keyboard and a mousewith the cable, I was able to get it to detect only a 4 GB pendrive and only in FAT32 format. It outright refused to detect my HDD of 160GB and 500GB {both NTFS} or my 8GB microSD card which I put in through a card reader. Now, most sites I've seen using the OTG feature use the 2nd cable I've posted as an attachment. I know this is an absurd longshot, but is there anyway that my using the cable in the 1st attachment instead of the second a reason for why it isn't working for me? If not, what am I doing wrong?
No, the cable is just fine if it works for some devices. Most generic ones just work fine.
The actual reasons are multiple:
NTFS is not supported by the stock kernel. Flash e.g. the aftermarket Siyahkernel to use the devices
Card readers need drivers, they are not "real" mass storage devices. I'm not sure if and which drivers are included in the kernel.
USB 2.5" HDD's without external power supplies need a HUGE amount of power, often even above the specified 500mAh. I don't think the S3 can provide that much power and you may damage it trying or even if it works (Altough I think it has a limiter, but better safe than sorry)

Thank God. I thought I screwed up the device somehow. I understand. I merely wanted to see whether or not I have support. I highly doubt I'll do anything beyond actually playing using the PSX Controller, but I wanted to know how far it can go. Just one more question. Flashing an aftermarket kernel means data loss right?
Depends. You usually have (or at least are strongly recommended to) factory-reset the device due to the low-level changes between the ROM's which can and will cause issues.
However that is not really an issue;
Just copy your whole internal sdcard (/mnt/sdcard) to an USB stick and do the same with your Apps through Titanium Backup.
Then restore both again after having flashed the custom ROM and you're up and running without data loss.
You'll need root for Titanium Backup tough, just flash Siyahkernel or CF-Root through Odin to gain the privilege.
Has anyone, or is anyone developed a root for this device?
Thanks!

Rooting Lenovos
I should preface this with the statement that i don't own an N308.
I do have the little Yoga tablet 8 though, and i rooted it with a method ment for an Ideatab A1000.
Found at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2497855
Now I'm not sure how the N308 is set up.
Can you connect it to a pc like you would a regular android device?
If so then the method from the A1000 might also work for the N308.
i'm very much considdering the N308 myself after i saw this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=UM019601 on lenovos own website.
If you dare open it you'll discover that the ram and harddrive are easily accessible, replaceable, and looks to be standard pc parts.
And the tought of a Tegra 4 backed by 4 gigs of ram plus 1 - 1.5 tb of storage is rather mindblowing...
Still have some fears about the screen being TN and infrared rather than IPS and capacitive though.
And there is also a rumor going around that third party file managers can't access the harddisk.
To you who has it; what are your thoughts?
My second consideration is an Acer DA223hql. Though it has it's own issues with only android 4.1, only a single gig of ram and no built in harddrive.
Still, the screen is a step up and maybe the ram is as easily accessible as the lenovos. and at least i have some big SD cards and usb drives to augment it.
Or is all this just too far fetched?

The n308 can not hook up to a PC. It's all inputs. I does have a SD card reader and 3-4 USB ports.
As of now I cannot find a self (no PC required) rooting software. I'm really needing this thing rooted.
As of this writing, the levono n308 has an update which I'm staying away from until I can find a root.
One of the latest I've seen is towelroot (towelroot.com).
It's the brainchild of Geohot and they say it'll root almost any device.
That one is a simple apk you download and install.
I've not tried it myself, but the word is that it is good.
Google it, or just go to towelroot.com
Edit: tried towelroot with my old Nexus S (yes I still have one of those) with no effect.
It is running stock 4.1 and I never bothered to root it.
It caused no trouble, but didn't root it either
Old thread, but good news !!!
Try Towelroot V1 and et voila : It works !
Get my Lenovo N308 this day and tried it with the actual version of Towelroot. No success....
After that I try it with the V1 and it works like a charm. Rooooooohohooot
By the way, I`ve got the 16GB Version with 500GB HDD, running Android 4.2.2
Greetz
Congrats
Happy to hear it.
For some reason newer versions of towelroot doesn't always seem to work on these oversized tablets.
But I have also had luck with V1 on my Acer.
Just not as much with the Acer itself.
But that is a whole different issue.
Still, having root is quite almost a must for me.
Of course, without it`s quite useless
Maybe not useless
But just not as flexible.
As far as I can gather the n308 has a lot of functionality built in already.
Had it had an Hdmi-in I'd have been all over it.
It was just that little extra I needed

I recently purchased an Azpen A1050 tablet. It's a 10.1" screen model in 1280x800 resolution, with a quad-core Allwinner33 CPU (an ARM Cortex 7 design,) 1GB RAM, 16GB flash, and external storage via a MicroSD card. It runs Android 6.01 Marshmallow.
I've had several other Azpen models, including the A727, A741, A746 and A746g. I was able to root all of them, and Kingo Root worked on the the A741, 746, and 746g models.
Kingo bounces off, both when using the Windows host based version and the apk to root on device. (And when the Windows host program gives up, it leaves half a dozen shell instances active on the tablet and killing performance till the tablet is rebooted.)
King Root bounces off saying "tablet is not adaptive".
Framaroot's apk installer also fails.
The Towelroot apk I found fails to run. The device claims it's potentially harmful and refuses to execute it. (And there are a maze of sites claiming to offer Towelroot, but it's not clear which are legitimate. Attempts to download the apk fron developer Geohot's site fail, with a 0 byte file getting downloaded.)
Has anyone successfully rooted this device, and if so, how did you do it?
There's an option in Settings to unlock the boot loader, which means it might be possible to flash a custom ROM, but I'd prefer to avoid that unless there is no other option.
Thanks in advance.
i have 1058b 10inch azpen tablet and in developer options theres a allow the bootloader to be unlocked switch from there ive read that using adb and fastboot you can oem unlock the bootloader from a online pc with a couple of commands but i also have found no open source code for azpen so theres a few possibilities of the outcome first it should unlock then one of two things are said to happen either the system would reset to factory or it would delete the entire os so without anymore documentation i couldnt go any further as my tablet was gifted to me and still too new to take that risk but after the bootloader is unlocked kingo or king root should root the tablet if not sideloading super user apk could be possible after bootloader unlock but i havent tried any of this still debating
---------- Post added at 10:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:23 PM ----------
and i tried framaroot, towel root, kingo root, king root as well as others like you did with no results one other thing stopping me is i havent found any official azpen drivers so using above method may not work for my tablet as it may not connect to adb fastboot to run unlock commands

Thanks for the reply. As you mention, it might be possible to unlock the bootloader and proceed from there.
I'm not sure an Azpen driver would be needed for adb to work, but there's a limit to how much I want to experiment.
I bought the A1050 as a device that might replace a laptop with something smaller and lighter when traveling, My 7" models almost could, but the 7" screen size was a painful limitation.
The nice thing about the A1050 is a full sized USB port. It means I can plug in my Logitech portable keyboard without having to use an OTG adapter, or plug in a USB hub and use keyboard and mouse. (The full sized port can't be used for connecting external storage, but that's not a deal breaker. What it can do is a boon.)
I'm still working on it, but the device as stands can largely do what I want. Rooting is simply a convenience - it would let me remove some bloatware Azpen installed as system aps that can't be removed by the standard Add/Remove measures, and might let me correct a few annoyances in what Azpen did. It isn't necessary to be able to use the tablet for the intended purpose, and since it does basically work, I'm not going to try something that might break it.
I can wait to see if a rooting solution that can root without needing to unlock the bootloader appears. If I run across one, I'll post about it here. In the meantime, what I have works well enough.
lucky with the full size usb, mine just has micro, 2 sim card slots, sdcard slot of course, fm radio feature and 64gbs i like it, it could use some debloating as you say, ive been just disabling certain apps that have the option definatly needs more ram, hopefully i can use a swap file but its too new so im taking it slow and thanks for your reply im looking and will share any findings as well
much appreciation

I don't think you need a swap file, and I believe Android handles that internally. There's a Linux kernel the hood, and Android is essentially a Linux system. It just differs in the way things are set up from a desktop Linux distro.
The A1050 has 16GB of storage, of which 12 are available to the user. That gives me headroom, so I don't have to resort to something like Link2SD, which lets you carve out an ext4 slice on an external card and mount that as additional app storage. (And Link2SD requires a rooted device to work in any case.) It has a GB of RAM, and that's been adequate. While Android may have a number of processes running in the background, most of them don't take a lot of RAM. I've never seen an out-of-memory condition on my devices. The issue I ran into was not enough space in the part of the internal filesystem allocated to app storage to hold everything I wanted to install.
The full size USB port was a pleasant surprise. Dual SIM card slots sounds like yours has phone capability. That's not something I would want. It probably intended to allow connectivity when you don't have a Wifi hotspot nearby. My tablet is specifically set up to be used in local mode, working on locally stored data. It's online only to check for new versions of installed apps , and to check email on occasion when traveling. I wouldn't care about FM radio, either.
Another pleasant surprise was the microSD slot. Previous Azpen models maxed out at 32GB cards. This was a hardware thing - they used SDHC slot hardware, and that has a 32GB volume size limitation. To get higher capacity, the slot has to be SDXC.
The published specs indicated the same 32GB volume limit as other Azpen tablets. But I had a 64GB microSD card bought for another device that turned out not to support it. I popped it into the A1050, it saw if, and offered me the choice of importing it as internal storage or using it as external. Importing it would mean formatting it as ext4, the default Android filesystem, and it would be mounted by the tablet as additional internal storage. I wanted to be able to pop the card and read it in something else, and transfer files to/from it without using MTP. I chose External, it worked for a bit, and then told me a had a 64GB external card. I've seen Azpen's published specs being incorrect before, so I wasn't all that surprised they were wrong, but this was a pleasant surprise.
Front and rear facing cameras were also nice. The rear facing camera is "in a pinch", and not something I'd try to do serious photography with, but is works well enough if I just want a quick shot of something.
Azpen has a bewildering variety of models, and I do wonder who they think the audience is. Had I known going in I couldn't root the A150, I would have opted for the A1048. That has similar specs, but runs Lollipop instead of Marshmallow, and should be rootable.
The nice thing is that the tech gets steadily cheaper. The A1050 cost me $80, which is a decent price for a 10" tablet with the specs it has. A non-Azpen model would likely cost twice that. (And Azpen's list price for the A1050 is $299.95. I got mine from Micro Center who is an Azpen retail partner and apparently gets very good wholesale pricing from Azpen.)
