[Q&A][SOLVED]Is there a way to edit AndroidManifest.xml? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Question:
I'm trying to add toggles in statusbar editing SystemUI.apk following this porting guide. I ported toggle on ICS but to do this in JB I have to add two lines in AndroidManifest.xml.
Once I edited AndroidManifest.xml when I recompile SystemUI.apk with edited file I corrupt original signature and at boot OS do not load SystemUI.apk, so it do not work in the rom, any help?
It can be done because an user in this thread done it but i'm unable to do.
Answer:
Ok, after more then an year i answered at my question by myself.
Editing the AndroidManifest.xml we will corrupt the signature and for this the edited apk will not be loaded at system boot. The proposed solutions are disable the signature check in the services.jar or resign every apk in the rom but these are not the only solutions.
After editing the AndroidManifest.xml in a system's apk we can check the edited apk's signature in .apk/META-INF/CERT.RSA (keytool -printcert -v -file .apk/META-INF/CERT.RSA) and re-sign every system apk that has its same signature.
Here a detailed article on my blog.

I am already using the Brazilian version OTA Blur_Version.982.124.17.XT910.Brasil.en.BR which when I compile the thumbs HR GPS and Mobile Data
My problem is that I think for most CDMA roms present here at XDA, this conflicts with something in the GSM file here.
So far I have not found too that conflict or error.
All help is welcome.

Correct. It will probably only boot on your running rom, not in a ROM.zip. Possibly a few options..
1. Edit your services.jar to disable system signature checks.. Google or search xda for it - not sure of effectiveness or compatibility with JB.
2. Re-sign all apks (maybe jars too? Not certain) - the ones that are not updated in Play Store (or those with matching signature dates in the apks) - never actually did it, but have heard of others using this method.
3. This one's a guess, and I just thought of it.. Switch out the SystemUI after install and first boot with a script or zip.. Might not even work though.. Not sure.
4. Build from source.
5. Figure out a way to do it without editing the AndroidManifest..
Sorry, never tried to do the toggle mod on JB yet..

I edited AndroidManifest.xml and if I use the original signature, it will work provided the ROM has booted at least once...but I don't like that...so I made a script which re-signs all system and framework apks (except gapps stuff or those published in market)...it will now then work right away after a clean flash...

I know this but i would not re-sign all system and framework apks.
I would do as this user did.

Err...I don't get it... what he did? It's about odexed mods...

He modded too SystemUI.apk to add toggles in statusbar following the porting guide that i posted above and to do this on JB he added in the AndroidManifest.xml this two lines:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETT INGS" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE" />
without lose original signature.

Yea... that's what I meant... Edit AndroidManifest.xml and retain original sig...but you must apply it AFTER at least after a single boot...or else, factory reset and the statusbar will be gone...

I did this.
I edited AndroidManifest.xml retaining original signature and i applied it after a lot of boot with original SystemUI.apk but OS wont load edited SystemUI.apk; If i try resign it OS loads SystemUI bat it crashs.

Hmm...you decompiled and did the edits, then recompile right? And kept the original META-INF folder? Sometimes, it might be caused by other mods you have done in conjunction...

Are you sure your edits you made to the SystemUI are working?
Like, did you flash the SystemUI after adding the toggle mod, but before editing the AndroidManifest (so you would have the two broken toggles) - or it has never booted with your edited apk?

Yes, I'm sure my edits are working because i tested SystemUI.apk with only toggle mod without AndroidManifest.xml edited and it works, i have toggles but SystemUI force close when I use gps and data toggles so to solve this problem i have to edit AndroidManifest.xml .

Are you making a whole ROM.zip?
Or.. You just want to make flashable zip packages with the mods?
If a ROM, then sounds like you should try this:

what i have to try? to resign all system app?

The big problem is that you do not edit the Manifest because FC and the GPS data, since when the reissues manifest the systemui for working.
Provisionally decided to give this way:
In quickpanel_quick_settings Layout folder, removed the GPS and DATA lines and rearranged the order of the toggles then went on QuickPanel smali folder and deleted the smalis working with the same, recompiled and replace the modified files inside the original apk using 7zip .
Most wanted GPS and data working.
Hugs.

Have you solved your problem????
I have the same problem, i have to edit Framework-res.apk "androidmanifest.xml" but after i recompile and replace on the path, i have the same problem.
In my situation i don't have a boot because the framework error give me the unable to boot, but i have tried with other app (settins.apk for exemple), and after the boot my settings.apk is not installed on the smartphone.
Someone can tell me what's the correct method to edit the "androidmanifest.xml"?????

[Q] neo V (.62 fw) problem with recompiled Home.apk

Hi.
Sorry, I wasn't sure if it should be in "Themes", so I posted in General.
I've got neo V with root made on .42 (with ZergRush) and .62 stock fw installed via OTA. I was trying to change the number of desktops in Home.apk. What I do, generally:
1. Decompile Home.apk
2. Edit "number_of_desktop_panes" in values/integers.xml
3. Edit values/styles.xml to avoid compilation error (as advised here).
4. Edit DesktopModelManager.smali (as adviced here), but there's slightly different code (different line number and variable (?) name).
5. Recompile, replace with /system/app/Home.apk
The replace process is 100% good, because restoring original Home.apk do not cause any problems.
I do it from adb. I made the /system/tmp/ dir and given it 777 chmod to do it faster (without /sdcard). I mount /system as R/W, push Home.apk to /system/tmp/, change chmod to 644, then replace /system/app/Home.apk with it. Sometimes I try "sync", sometimes not.
It works only with stock Home.apk.
The problem is with recompiled apps.
I tried:
- xdaAutoTool
- ApkMultiTool
- ApkTools (from here)
- ApkTools (from here)
I also tried signing the app and not signing it (as mentioned here).
I also tried installing another launcher (GO Launcher EX), changing it to default, then replacing Home.apk, then changing again.
I also (huh) tried recompiling the app without any changes (except the one in styles.xml, without it, compilation would not succeed).
I also (getting boring) tried skipping the .smali edit.
Nothing works. If I replace Home.apk without reboot, the Home button doesn't work (single press) and if I was on the desktop when replacing app - it becomes black, no dockbar, nothing.
If I reboot - the phone freezes on SE logo, fortunately I can access it with ADB - when I replace Home.apk with stock one, the phone boots in a couple of seconds without a reboot.
I've got Win7 Professional x64, the newet JRE and JDK for x64, tried newest and older apktool.jar, smali.jar and other files. ApkMultitool was working on the yesterday-updated Android SDK folder. And I have no idea, what am I doing wrong... Do you have any ideas?
EDIT:
- earlier I successfully replaced SystemUI.apk with the changed one (Ultrans v2b) - no problems here
- I've got locked BL and I didn't install any recovery

I had no idea, compile and decompile didn't report any errors so I assumed it should be OK.
As I never changed apk with dependencies, can you explain me two things?
1. Which files from /system/framework should I pull and where to place them before decompiling with ApkMultiTool?
2. Will files from framework be changed or are they only needed as resources and are left untouched?

Honest it's been months since I used,
decompile with dependency ie framework-
Res.apk then change stuff
Then recompile and in keep folder remove what you changed including resources if xml were changed hopefully you get what im saying

OK, I think I got this - SemcGenericUxpRes.apk
Home.apk decompiled with dependencies from this file, then I changed it and compiled. Still the same thing.
Maybe the res file was wrong? Or should I sign it with ApkMultiTool?

You were right, thanks. I must have tried with the wrong file earlier, because I was quite sure I tried framework-res.apk - and I didn't. And yes, the app should be signed after build.
Now, the Home.apk is working with my changes, but only after this little "hack" from Chainfire.
But I've got another stupid problem - the only thing that doesn't work is the "Photos and Videos" widget... I think I'll give up...

Thanks, but in case of widgets I don't even know, where to start from. Why the hell only a couple of them doesn't work now? Photos and Videos, Music Player and Timescape Widget - I think that's all. I have no idea, where it came from :/
EDIT: OK, now I have an idea, but it scares me. As I can see, the only way to compile and run the .apk was to remove
Code:
android:sharedUserId="com.sonyericsson.home"
From AndroidManifest. Now, if I understand properly, the widget needs Home.apk to HAVE that ID? Because logcat says:
Code:
W/System.err( 3399): java.lang.SecurityException: Requesting code from com.sonyericsson.advancedwidget.photo (with uid 10004) to be run in process com.sonyericsson.home (with uid 10138)
Long story short: WTF?!

I'm unsure what your trying to do but if you get the resources fileand any thing else you changed from the home apk that you made,
and then put IT inside a fresh home apk -ie new untouched home.apk
this should help with what you're saying your problem is

OMG, I did it
First of all - I didn't understand you at the first time, about resources and "new" .apk. Now I think I got it (not everything, but enough to get this to work).
The problem I found on my private PC (earlier I was using other PC) was the "Sorry thats not the dependee apk, try again" error when trying to decompile Home.apk with framework-res.apk. It didn't happen before, but I was so tired with all of that, I wanted to try the shortest way, so here's what I did:
1. Decompiled Home.apk without dependencies
2. Made some changes I wanted to make
3. Just compiled the app, answering "y" for question about system app, but without copying "additional files".
4. Replaced resources.arsc file inside original (stock) Home.apk with the one from just compiled unsignedHome.apk, installed and...
- working Home.apk - checked
- working widgets - checked
- happy me - checked!
Thanks!
Your wellcome

modifying system APK's for the atrix?

hey all, i'm starting to get into modding my atrix and i have some questions about modifying the system APK's. i've already deodexed /system/app and /system/framework with xUltimate. i'm using APK Manager in linux to decompile the APK's that i want to mod.
the problem comes when i compile the new APK and upload it to /system/app. the stock APK's are signed seemingly with a specific signature that the phone is looking for. APK Manager says to not sign the APK's that you intend to install to /system, but if you do choose to sign it, the certs that are used are not what the atrix is expecting. when i look for errors in logcat, its indicating that the package changed and that its trying to look for the matching cert within /data/secure.
how does one modify these system APK's, and keep the original signature intact? it looks like the manifest contains a sha1-digest signature of each file, which makes just copying/pasting the META-INF into the new APK not an option.
thanks in advance!
What I do is decompile to change xml's etc and then recompile without signing and then just drag the edited files from the new APK to the old one.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
so does that mean it doesn't really matter that the sha1 signatures of the changed files dont get updated in the manifest?
is there not an agreed-upon method to do this that doesn't seem so "hacky" ?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I'm not sure mate. That's the way I found out how to do it and I've done translations and a few themes and framework-res systemui and settings have worked fine doing it the way I do it.

No, you don't ever want to sign system apps. Are you sure the permissions are correct? and what changes did you make?
I didn't put any permissions. How do I set them in the zip? And I change the 3g icon to 4g because I have virgin mobile so I can't get 4g but I want it to say 4g lol.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
Well if you are installing it with a zip permissions are probably correct. I'm assuming you decompiled the apk changed the icon and compiled it again? If all you want to do is change an icon, just open the apk with 7zip or similar and replace the icon, no need to decompile. That should solve it. Let me know
Okay. I'll try that and if I do decompile it, how do I set the permissions? Cuz i decompiled settings.apk and made a XML change.

You would set permissions if you are just pushing the apk to your phone. Better question, how exactly are you installing the apk after you made the changes?
I just replace the old apk in the zip file and flash the ROM.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
ok, then the updater-script in the zip is handling the permissions for you, so you don't need to worry about that.
So there is no need to sign anything at all? Awesome.

Apps in /system/app/ never get singed, apps in /data/app/ however have to be signed.

Hi I'm also trying to learn modifying systemUI.apk through smali edits
So as a start I just decompiled my systemUI.apk with apktool v1.5.2 with no errors. Then directly recompiled it. No modifications made. The resulting apk didnt have any META-INF folder and thus I suppose is unsigned. But pushing this apk to /system/app doesn't install it.. As a result after reboot I have no installed systemUI.apk
What am I doing wrong? BTW I'm on Sony xperia live with walkman. But I suppose this is a general thing. And yes I have installed all framework files and as a result no errors while de/recompiling

The best way in case of small edits is to open both your stock and your modified SystemUI.apk with 7-zip, then copy the META-INF and AndroidManifest.xml from the stock to the modded one.
Close both and push back your modded one to the phone.
Guess that work.

Well now I use APK Multi-Tool and it works great. From what I have understood it keeps the same signatures as in the original SystemUI.apk and there is no need of any resigning.

[Q] Modifying SystemUI.apk xml file

I am using kyanROM and love it! One little tweak I was looking to make was in the notification it has kyanROM along the bottom. I was looking to replace that with my nickname. I am new to modding Android, so any help or tips would be appreciated.
Here are the steps I took and the issues I encountered:
Using NinjaMorph I extracted/decompiled SystemUI
I copied the files over to my PC
Looking through the files (not an exhaustive search mind you), I found one, tw_status_bar_tracking.xml, that had android:text="@string/kyanROM and android:layout_gravity="bottom". This looked promising to me, so I changed kyanROM to the name I wanted to use.
After saving, I copied this file back to my phone and opened the projected in NinjaMorph and said replace the original xml file with my new xml file.
"Finished" the project and closed out NinjaMorph.
Immediately experienced issues. SystemUI stopped working. Rebooting did nothing. So I restored my nandroid backup in order to start over. Back in NinjaMorph, I extracted SystemUI again and copied all files to my PC. Searching the contents of all files (a more exhaustive search) I found 4 instances of the phrase kyanROM:
First was the original in tw_status_bar_tracking.xml and said android:text="@string/kyanROM"
Second is in values\public.xml and says <public type="string" name="kyanROM" id="0x7f0800cd" />
The last two hits are from the same line in values\strings.xml and say <string name="kyanROM">kyanROM</string>
Now, assuming I'm correct that I need to mod SystemUI, after looking at the search results I'm thinking the change I need to make is to the last hit on my search, thus making it <string name="kyanROM">myName</string>. Then, when tw_status_bar_tracking.xml looks for the string kyanROM, it will display myName.
So, am I correct that in order to make this change I need to be in SystemUI? And If that is correct, is my proposed change correct - modifying the strings.xml file to show <string name="kyanROM">myName</string>?
If I do those, go into NinjaMorph and say to replace the original file with my new file I then should see myName along the bottom of the notification dropdown. Thoughts???
So I started over, this time I pulled the SystemUI.apk using adb. Then using apktool I did "apktook if SystermUI.apk". Then, apktool d SystermUI.apk ./mod". Found the file I *think* I need to modify (\values\strings.xml) and replaced kyanROM with myName. Saved the file.
Now I'm trying to recompile the file. I run the following apktool b -f -d mod. When I run this I get the error: Exception in thread "main" brut.androlib.AndrolibException: brut.directory.PathNotExist: apktool.yml.
1) Am I modifying the correct file to place myName at the bottom of the notification screen?
2) How do I fix the PathNotExist error? I've looked at some solutions, but none seem to have worked.
Actually you need framework-res.apk from /system/framework installed through apk tool.
Pull framwork-res.apk and install it as you did for systemui.
After installing framework,type
apktool d systemui.apk
Now make the necessary changes and type
apktool b systemui
To recompile it back.
Note:after you recompile, you need to add meta-inf folder from original apk to your new recompiled apk to make it work.

OK, I think I'm with you.
I need both SystemUI and framework-res in order to modify SystemUI
Install both (apktool if NameOfApk.apk)
decompile (apktool d SystemUI.apk)
make changes
recompile (apktool b SystemUI) but not the framework-res since I made no changes to it
And thanks for the tip about adding the meta-inf folder. I knew this, but since I never gotten that far to test, I'd probably forget to do that.

Installing framework-res.apk alone is enough if you have Samsung phone and have the latest apktool...

OK, I installed both - no harm I guess. So I have made all my changes, updated the apk with the meta folder, etc. I'm ready to push this over to my phone. Using adb, do I need to remount or can I just do the following: adb push S:\apk\SystemUI.apk /system/app/
Well, I took a shot and just did the adb push without remount. I think it worked. We'll see if there are any issues moving forward. Yay! Many thanks....
edit: I noticed it reset my wallpaper, easy fix. Wonder if anything else would've been reset by this change?

Apktool and systemui no status bar??

Ok so i have had NO LUCK whatsoever trying to get this to work. My ROM for the Note 2 is a TW base (people want the S-Pen functions). And they like the AOSP feel so i decided to try and make a ROM that is AOSP themed. Well i have the launcher and a few AOSP themed apps such as the messaging app.
The flashers were very satisfied with my work so far. But they wanted an AOSP themed status bar. Meaning some AOSP battery images wifi and so on. I decided just just replace the EXACT images. I used a cm10 ROM to get the pngs. I also did use the newest Apktool to do it. I did all the framework installation. I decompiled both and started transfering. Here is what i did. I went to the drawable-xhdpi folder in both ROMs. They had pretty much identical png names. But the icons were different (one being the blue theme) so i took the blue icons (battery and wifi) and transfered them to my rom. I made sure that only the pngs with the same names were transfered. so there wasnt any issue compiling.
Next i compiled the APK file.
Then i used my backup systemui.apk file to transfer the META-INF folder to the new one using 7-zip.
Then i went and signed it and used dsixda's android kitchen to zipalign it. Then after all that i pulled that apk from the zipaligned folder and put it on my phone's sd card. I have the root explorer app. I move it to my /system/app folder. It moved successfully. Then i reboot and when it comes back up i dont have a status bar. And my wallpaper is black for a little while and then goes back to the feather thing.
I have tried signing and not signing. Zipaligning and not zipaligning.
I am stuck here. I am really wanting the AOSP themed icons in the status bar. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Try this:
Decompile, mod and compile your apk as usual (don't sign or zipalign the file).
Open your fresh compiled apk, and your original apk using 7-zip (I haven't tested with Winrar, try if you wish).
Drag and drop all the files from your compiled apk to the original one, EXCEPT the AndroidManifest.xml.
Push this new cross-modded apk to your phone and reboot.

I am modding my status bar 2.3.4 and i want to add power toggles to it
i got a systemui.apk from another phone ( xperia arc 2.3.4) which has the same status bar like i do ( droid 3 )
when i switch systemui.apk's between them i get a FC and then i reboot and i get no status bar .
is that because it is from a different phone ( i looks exactly like my status bar ) or it might be a signature problem from android xml ?

You can't do that. Just because they look the same doesn't mean the coding is the same. You are gonna have to add all the missing coding from one that has it to yours. Not an easy task at all

I even tried to copy a status bar from a 2.3.4 rom ( droid 3 ) to my own build ( 2.3.4 droid 3 ) and did not work
I somehow need to edit the status bar, the interface, so that I create the space needed by my toggles and then add them
And after that I need to create a command file so when I click on wifi to turn it off or on for example, right?
Do you know any place for learning coding or some tutorial that could help me in a way or another?

You will need to use a decompiling tool such as APKtool. Then transfer the PNG files from the xperia systemui to the droid3 systemui. Make sure png file names are exactly the same on both systemui's or just rename them to match the droid3 systemui. Also make sure if you have lets say 400 png files in one folder make sure you have 400 at the end of your modding or you will have compiling issues and force closes!
Then use 7-zip to transfer the meta-inf folder to the modded apk file. Zipalign and boom you are done!

So if i understood corectly i'll have to do this
1. Decompile both apks with apktool .
2. Copy all the stuff from framework-res from xperia to my systemui ( or just for the status bar toggles )
3. Transfer meta-inf .
Question : if i transfer meta-inf folder i will copy and replace the original right ? And what is the meta inf actually ? (The command lines for each power toggle ? ( i mean what to do if i click wifi for example ☠)
4. Zipalign .
5. Replace the file in my unzipped rom ( should i unzip it normally or with apktool ) and then zip it and flash it

Its a complicated process. It's hard to explain. Check to see if your device supports VRTheme. Go to the Themes section for your device and see if anybody has a theme that uses that system. If so that would make your life SOOO much easier!!
I want to edit my status bar style to iOS style by editing systemui.apk file ..how to do that tell me bro
