Won't do it with Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans... anyway, by looking at data usage they can see if you are tethering or not no matter what app you use to do it. LOL.
$15 for a feature that's suppose to be free no thanks, I may work for T-Mobile but I'm not paying extra for something thats is a froyo feature by default.

Some people are getting Text Messages from T-Mobile stating that they have "some how" picked up that they are tethering via the Google Code, and the native applications and are asking for $15 fee for doing it. there is a thread floating around here somewhere on it.

even though the native Application has a WEP code input option. the Wi-FiTether.apk has a MAC address white listing option along with encryption options so it will only allow certain devices to connect to yours. which i really like. I've been driving down the highway doing 65mph and had people try to connect to my wi-fi that i am letting my wife use for her netbook.
MAC filtering will not allow them to get to the web....
thats my reason for wanting it.
I just use the one built into my phone, they don't charge me and it works great...
Does anyone have the APK of the one that came with the phone? I'm not on stock rom and would like to try the original one
Well in all regards it's a good thing I searched on this subject before I posted anything. In any case does this app let you limit your bandwidth when using it as a wi-fi hotspot? or is there any app that will let me limit my speeds when using the wi-fi?

It should be the same as with the previous data plan. Im sure the workarounds still work. Try this app, I've been using it without issues: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ..

this would defeat my doubt about https (secure sites) but why do you say avoid plain http? T-mobile being able to detect if you are tethering where secure sites would be protected and no one can tell what you are doing?

Okay to answer all your questions.
1. It can access all sites.
2. Yes tmo apparently detect unpaid tethering via the pc useragent on http sites but since they pry into https as it is a secure protocol, they can't detect those but I just used all the various protocols without any issues.
3. Yes it works via the wifi tether app from the play store, it does work via the default tether app on some devices but the newer devices they set it to check your data plan for hotspot, but the wifi tether app gets around that and works fine and no I didn't modify anything, I'm on the stock apn, etc.
Yes I do have the true unlimited plan as well.

Actually everyone is doing crazy downloading, the thing about the wifi tether third party app is that it shows your device as being the user of the data and not it being tethered the way the on board hot spot option would, that's why I opt for the third party app than just a fix, that way they can't block your tethering since it's your device showing up on the network and not a pc, imo.

So today i set up the fix for tethering that hasoons posted but i did not use it. just set it up only. then right now that I am home from work I am tethering with to my laptop but using the mobile hotspot that comes with the phone. I have the nrg rom stock. I thought that if I used that stock tethering app it wouldnt work? this is weird...
So my buddy just got this phone and he's saying foxfi no longer works for him(from what I've read this seems to be accurate).
He's on an unlimited plan with Verizon and he's wanting me to root his phone tonight so he can get a hotspot app... Before I root it i wanted to make sure 1. That there isn't any hotspot apps that work with the DNA without rooting and 2. I wanted to make sure there are some hotspot apps that work after root. I've been researching and it sounds like most people are saying you're sol unless you go to a share every thing plan through Verizon.
Thanks for the info!
I want to know exactly the same thing. I need internet for my tablet. I'd rather not root, but I will if something works for sure after that.

I am not rooted. 100% stock. I have not unlocked this phone. I unlocked my first one and then it died several days later of a hardware failure and so I am waiting this time to make sure this new device is solid.
All I do is go to settings>more>Mobile Network Sharing>Turn on Mobile Hotspot. I setup the wifi there and then connect with my tablet.
Perhaps its because i am on the Share Everything Plan?

Tethering works perfectly for me on ARHD 10.2 (which is what I'm guessing you meant to type). Just go to settings, hit more, mobile network shareing, then go into portable wifi hotspot settings, name your hotspot and PW, then hit the checkbox. I had no problem.
Just curious, when you did your install with AROMA, did you hit AT&T, or international?

No.... Using the "phone" apn yes, at 5GB of usage I get throttled down to .047mbps down.
Then I just switch over to the wap.cingular APN and BAM pulling 6-10mbps down on H+/3G. No throttling here..
This thread is a bit confusing to me.
Are you guys saying AT&T charges extra for tethering?
ATT charges $$$ for a seperate data plan which lets you tether Internet, which is also limited to about 5gb or 3gb, not too sure. If you use tethering on a regular phone (stock rom with bloatware- fresh from the store), they would probably charge you for tethering because of the detection apk they put in there.
The way to bypass this is to use a custom rom, Internet tethering should work on it, maybe you could reflash/ reset the phone (all the settings and whatnot) maybe try a different rom?
Also, I diddnt know you could bypass ATT throttle, could you post all the complete APN settings to do that?
Cheers,
OK, please forgive me for being slow. You only save money if you're tethering from a phone with unlimited data plan, right? If you're on a limited plan, it doesn't matter and AT&T should not charge you extra, right?

If you go over the limit on a limited plan, they charge you extra $$$. I think it is $20 for 1 more GB.
If you are detected tethering on a stock ATT phone, they will probably charge you for tethering plan
If you are on unlimited data, you may lose it (plan) if you are detected tethering (stock phone),
if you go over limit 5GB for 4g LTE phone they will just throttle you.
Undetected tethering/ Custom ROM with removed att protection = only worry about going over the limit
Cheers,

I agree. The only thing Att or carriers look at is the amount of data being used periodically or the mac/ip address. Carriers have the ability to tell the difference from our phone using data or tethering, especially if data patterns changes.

All this does is remove the limitation that's built into the system of the device. It does not change anything other than a string of code on the device itself. I can't guarantee AT&T will not figure it out, but if you are smart about it they'll never know. I use tethering every once in a while when my home wifi is struggling. I mainly tether to my iPad mini for streaming YouTube, but occasionally other things like movies and downloading games as well. AT&T never caught on to me. Sadly my dad took it upon himself to change our entire families data plan so he save a measly $5 a person. I told him I'd give him the damn $25 a month but oh well.... Maybe I'll just tether more and we'll go over our data usage and then he'll have to switch it. I've already confirmed with a friend at AT&T that I can have mine back dated and re-activated.
Anyway, enough of being sidetracked, to make a long explanation short.... You won't get caught because of this mod. You'd only get caught of you way way way over use this mod.

Agree with all in the above response to this question. Also, AT&T's method of detection is network based. There is nothing I have seen that on the phone side (mod, etc) that can prevent this.
If your behavior is discrete, and usage is low and only occasional, you will not be caught. Tether large amounts of data, and you will almost certainly be caught.

Agreed on all but the large amounts of data. I would agree with this when on computer and full websites, but like on the iPad or other tablet that use mobile websites rather than full sized I believe your safe because their detection would see that it's a mobile format and therefore not arouse suspicion (If that makes sense)...

Its unlikely they are looking at webpages and whether they were mobile format or not. The data packets are tagged as tethered, it doesn't matter whether you were viewing mobile pages or not (and that isn't going to conceal the tethering). At least that what folks here that are smarter than me have stated. If true, that means that AT&T can detect any tethering, they just choose not to enforce with zero tolerance (possibly because its simply not practical), but rather to use some additional parameters to decide whether a person is going to receive the "warning" email and subsequently have a tethering plan added to their account.
Nobody here knows for sure what parameters AT&T uses to trigger the "warning" email (and probably not info that AT&T is going to volunteer). But volume of tethered data has been reasonably speculated. I'm surprised to hear that you were able stream YouTube, other movies, and downloads, without getting caught. Could be you were just lucky; or you are in fact correct that tethered data volume is not the key indicator. Nobody except folks at AT&T know for sure.
My advice is still to keep tethered usage to a minimum, in order to stay of their radar.
