[Q] Can we switch to data-only plan? - HTC Rezound

Can we switch to data-only plan and get rid off the calling plan? So we can use Google Voice to replace the calling plan?
I mean to purchase the Prepaid Tablet plan for the Rezound?

that might work, as long as its a sim controlled data plan. you would need to ask the provider to be 100% but i don't see why not. i mean a table is a phone without the phone radio.

Thanks for your reply. I think it's doable but just wondering if there is anyone doing it...

Google voice won't completely replace your voice plan. When someone calls your google number it will "call" whatever numbers you have listed. In your case it would be your mobile number so you would still require a minute plan if you wish get inbound calls. A nice trick you can do is get the 900 minute plan and you have five numbers for the friends and family. All calls to and from those numbers are unlimited minutes even on weekdays. So you can add your google number as one of those number and give out your google number to people. So everytime they call your google number, it will call your VZW number and since it's on your friends and family you'll have unlimited minutes.

Actually Google voice can completely replace it if using an app like talkatone.

It can if you use a sip service like sipgate, or others. I have several old incredibles that I gave to my kids as sip phones. There is a slight delay, but if you aren't a big talker, it works good enough.

[Q] Bell Atrix travel to USA

Hi all!
I am going on vacation to the beautiful state of Florida soon. I'll be in West Palm Beach for 14 days. Does anyone recommend a carrier I may purchase a SIM card from and a plan that they have? I would like to use my unlocked Bell Atrix mostly for data (maps, navigator, etc...) And maybe some local calling.
Thanks!
Sent from my Atrix using XDA App
So I went to AT&T and they said the data for their prepaid won't work on my phone.... I told them I want it anyways. It works. I just had to put the APN settings in and everything works great.

good stuff.....so did u have to pick-up a AT&T sim card plus a data plan or was it like a pay card????? will be doing the same soon.....but to Cal. thanks dill
FYI, the service for at&t is horrible in Florida, I just got back from a trip and 95% of the time it was 1 bar. Here in Texas I'm spoiled with pegged out bars and awesome service.

LMAO. I would have set it up in the store and rubbed it in their face. The sales rep sounds like an asshole lol
Glad it worked out for you though!
It's their Gophone prepaid plans. The sim card is free and it's easy to add $ and data on their website. I did a speedtest while I was down there. Got 1.8Mbps up and down, while on Bell at home I get 5.5Mbps down and 3.3Mbps up.

Get the AT&T 50$ monthly unlimited prepaid plan. It gives you unlimited talk, text AND data. While the data part is intended only for feature phones, AT&T has no way of checking that unless its one of their own phones (they can only check against IMEI). Bell Atrix should work perfectly and unless you really abuse the data, there shouldn't be a problem.
Now the issue is that since it is not allowed for a smartphone, sales persons can refuse you to sell one. However they're noobs as someone mentioned above. They think that data won't work for unlocked phones and you can use this argument in your favor. All you need to do is change/add APN. Also remember that for some weird reason, the sim is tied to your IMEI. If you use a dumb phone to get the sim and later want to put it in your atrix, it won't work. You'll need to call them or take it to their store so they can register atrix's imei against your account.
When I was in San Diego..I just went to T-mobile and purchased their pre-paid SIM. They had no issues selling me one that includes data plans..whereas AT&T told me I couldn't get one in a pre-paid (unless I bought an actual phone). For $70 I got Unlimited talk/text and data. Money can be thrown on the SIM card at any time..and since i'm going to Hawaii in September..I plan on using it again then (and the mobile hotspot is awesome..as the wife can boost my "unlimited" data onto her iphone).
Now if only I could figure out a way to make T-mobile work in Canada..because you Americans are SPOILED with your rates. $70?? Craziness.. Here for limited minutes (1500min i think including long distance) / unlimited text, and 5GB of data I pay $160/month.

[Q] Question about Unlocked SIM

Ok so over spring break I'm going to be going away, specifically, the Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and I went before and ran up like a $100 or something on data charges and texting.. But now my SIM card is unlocked as per the guide with the app off the market, so will I still get charged for roaming data, voice and sms? I just want to find out if anyone knows if I still need to go to AT&T and get it worked out there or what?, I'm just not sure exactly how this works.
thanks
If roaming charge not being applied then international rate will do
Or you can use the local network in Bahamas, hope they have GSM there.

No, you have to unlock your sim and use a sim card from the local network that they have there (and if you used their network before, it should be compatible anyways)

If the OP has used their device there previously then I'd say they support GSM.
Just make sure your phone has been unlocked and buy a SIM from a local carrier there and you should be good to go to use their network.

I'm not concerned with compatability with the network, Im mostly just wondering about data charges, Im guessing I'll just have to either plan it out at the store or deal with international charges whatever that's gonna be
You can get the international packages from at&t for a month (its prorated, so if you pay for a week, you only get 1/3 of the whole month), just don't forget to cancel it after you're done. It depends on how much data you use... and 50mb is not alot, I would rather just face the overage charges and try to use as little as you can (use wifi alot or something).

Go to your destination resort, ask them what mobile phone companies they use there. Or go to a gas station @ your destination & maybe they will sale prepaid mobile phone cards there.

Just about every airport I've been through lately has a kiosk for the local cell phone company. Easiest to grab one there.
Yeah, to clarify you sim card is not unlocked, your phone is sim unlocked. Meaning you can use other carriers sim cards. Even if you unlock, if you have the att sim in while international, you are still roaming, and att will bill you. You should remove your att sim before you depart the us, then look for local Sims upon arrival. As others mentioned make sure the local sim includes data. Also note your phone number will change, and you may need to add the international prefix to text and call people in the us. I would set up a textfree + skype account or similar and use that while traveling for texting or calling, that way you can use your contacts as-is and it uses data vs texting. You can send someone a text via textfree to tell them to hop on Skype, and video call over data or wifi.

Your data charges will be for whatever network you buy a SIM for, look at that carrier's pricing.
SIM-Unlocking an AT&T phone and then continuing to use an AT&T SIM changes *nothing*.

Flashed evo 3g to Straight talk.

I have a evo eg that I flashed to straight talk. I am now getting "unable to authenticate your phone" when trying to make call after re-filling my minutes.
I have tried the *228 and it states activated. I called straight talk tech support and had them reset the account.
I got my text and 3g back but i still can't make call.
I have looked at all setting and I am getting anywhere.
Any ideas?
Do you have the latest radios? I am not sure why you would flash to straight talk but you will be spending a lot of money paying to replenish your minutes. These phones were not meant to be on cards. I would suggest you flash your phone to virgin mobile or boot mobile. Boost offers a 50 dollar a month plan for unlimited everything. I know this is not the answer you were looking for but you are cheating yourself with prepaid cards. Smartphones are not meant to be on prepaid minute cards. My suggestion is to get boot or vm.

Thanks for the reply. Boost mobile uses sprint tower, so no deal there. I don't know about virgin mobile. The phone has worked for the last three months but when I last re-filled, I reactivated on the site.
The next morning I was getting the message.
I had looked at the settings and had straight talk support reset the account. They state that it is authenticating to my number.
I can call the *228 and progam the phone and it programs. the site states that it is activated but no calls.
I am now able to text. gps is working and 3g is working but can't call out or in.

Sim Unlocked

So I've read enough about the GS4 being Sim unlocked from Verizon. We are traveling to St Maarten in the Caribbean in April, and I'm just trying to confirm that its really as simple as purchasing a local sim and popping it in. My GS4 is unlocked and rooted since the MDK bootloader, but my wife's is a work provided phone, and I'm not allowed to touch it (although she always asks me how I tether....sorry dear...I'm not allowed to touch yours). Our resort has wifi but only in the lobby, and I'm not interested in data (I'll be on vaca) but I want to just be able to text my wife if need be while exploring the island.
Anyone know what I can expect to pay for a local sim? Don't even need a lot of minutes....just be able to text back and forth if we need to.
My FIL is on my Verizon plan. He's leaving in a few days for Aruba and Curacao.
He contacted Verizon and was told he could pay $5 for cheaper phone and texting rates while on his trip. I think it is $1.49 or $1.99 per minute for calls and .50 to send text and .05 to receive them.
Data is crazy expensive ($25/100mb with Int'l plan or $22ish per mb without) so I would turn off data sucking apps or seriously limiting it (turn off background sync, etc) even if you opt for the Verizon data plan. Also, if you don't turn off the data before you leave you will most likely get hit with data charges as soon as you land.
I would recommend getting local data sim and using Hangouts or some other non-texting data based chat service instead of texting each other.

Hangouts I can do....but that uses data. And I'm not going to have wifi on the beach.....MAYBE the beach at our resort....but I've read over and over that wifi is only in the lobby....so who knows where the range will end until I get there. I guess your saying leave data off until I get a local sim in it. Once the local sim is in it, I'll stop getting my verizon data? or will I have to stop gmail, and disable all other data apps?
I know what my phone does, and what apps use what data....and how you can set some up for wifi only....but my wife is clueless tech wise. I guess I'm not going to find a local sim with unlimited texting huh (or even a reasonable number of texts).
Once you replace the Verizon sim (keep it and make sure you know which is yours and which is the wife's because it does matter and you'll be putting them back in as soon as you get home) then your connection to Verizon is gone.
As soon as you install the local sim you will have data and/or phone coverage based on what you bought. If you can get two cheap data only sims that would be the way to go. Then use data services for doing instant messaging to contact each other.
All your data using apps will work just as they did at home. They don't care how you connect to the internet. GMail, Hangouts etc will all work as long as you have a data service.
Enjoy.

Ok, I gotcha now. I would love to find a data only Sim. It will be pretty easy to tell which sim is which upon return... I'll just make a test call to see whose phone rings when I dial my number  Thanks for your help. I don't want to pay Verizon $25 for 100MB as I'm sure some app I forget about will run me over.....and my wife's phone is run by her work....so local sim is the only way to go....or bring her rezound along.....but I'm not sure that phone was ever truly SIM unlocked without a specific Rom...and my rezound hacking days are long behind me.
I came across this site and while it doesn't say how much the sim will cost to purchase, it gives me an idea of the data packages I'll need to buy.

I just did this last week in the UK - stock GS4 running MK2, with a SIM from ekit.com.
All I did was to insert the SIM, set the phone to GSM mode, define the APN, and you're done. Finding a cheap carrier for data in the Caribbean is tough, however.

So I've been reading on some travel forums about queen of SXM. She is a part time resident of St. Maarten that does rental phones. I emailed her and for $8 for the week I am renting a SIM card. Any voice/data must be added after that in $5 increments. But data is mostly 2g (and expanding to 3g but likely not widely available). It's only $0.55 per day for the data and it's unlimited (since its so slow, its not like your going to be using a lot anyway). So basically for $13 a phone I can get data and no voice so we can message back and forth. Is Hangouts or what's app going to be reliable on a 2g network? I've read that wechat has designed their app for better use on 2g networks (in places like India and other emerging markets). On my Rezound I was able to force the phone into 1x only mode, but not so much on the S4 to be able to test it.....unless I can find an area with a really crappy signal.

Using two different services

I have been searching and can't really find an answer. I have a note 4 on Sprint. I would like to get the AT&T gear s. I would activate it with the big blue more than likely. Will the call forwarding, etc still work? I believe it should because it is still connected just not on one account. I have the framily plan with sprint and don't want to switch.
I also forgot to mention that I will be buying the s from best buy because of reward credits and they only have the AT&T version listed.

It should the watchphone has it's own number so call forwarding will work and you watch number would work. It's like google voice if you use that. So yes 2 numbers 1 watch. So bluetooth to accept Sprint stuff. Leave phone at home to accept AT&T stuff.
Ok thanks, that's what I was looking for. I'm not looking to switch sim cards yet and couldn't find out whether this is possible. If only bb would sell the sprint model for price matching purposes.

So this means that you wont have your "phone" # forward to the ATT Gear S from your SPRINT #?
So this means you have to give out the ATT Gear S # out to be able to reach you when you leave your Phone at home?

Yes Sprint watchphone will use the GS phone number when you are not connected to bluetooth i.e it will eat you data your 1,000 text/calls 100MB data per month unless you are on family share then your calls/text will be unlimited and you share data when you are away from phone but you have to have 20GB family share or higher for that
