Thanks for sharing. This is actually very helpful sometimes it's better to see it done on a vid than reading about it.
Too bad after unlocking the bootloader it voids the warranty.

[Q] Root on Linux

So ive got my One X+ but im looking for a way to root it and maybe unlock the boot loader. The only problem is there doesnt seem to be a way to Root on Linux. Ive tried this method but had no luck might be due to it being for a normal One X. Is there a working tool for Linux or a tool that can be run in Wine/Cross-over that someone has used
Im running 4.1.1 with software version 1.17.206.1 if that any help. Rooting is my main priority as i want to get rid of the massive bloatware etc and since HTCDev doesnt seem to be working today. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1. Download and install android sdk
2. Follow instructions on htcdev to unlock bootloader.
3. Flash twrp or cwm recovery
4. Flash superuser
5. Profit
I don't think you mentioned which version of the x+ you have, AT&T or international. It is important to make sure you flash the appropriate recovery. And on htcdev, the x+ isn't listed so when you go to select your device, you have to scroll to the bottom and select "all other supported models". Good luck. Google is your friend.
Its the Internation one I believe as its from the UK, I tried HTCDev but it get stuck at the OEM Token part (step 8 I Believe) at waiting for the device in the terminal
Make sure you've installed the necessary drivers (just install HTC Sync and then quit the installation after it says the drivers have been installed)
EDIT: herp derp you're on linux, give this a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119507

Wow, that's a long guide. Is the main/only reason to unlock the bootloader to install custom roms (can't this be done with just root access?).
I have root, but don't really wish to install custom roms. I don't have the bootloader unlocked, but I know it can be unlocked
why to unlock bootloader?
why to unlock bootloader?
1. u can flash custom ROMs/Kernels
2. u dont need to worry if the new firmware can be rooted or not as with unlocked bootloader u can always ROOT ur device
3. Sony gives sneak-peaks/preview builds of latest OS which requires unlocked bootloaders, as they did with Xperia 2011/2012 line, so who knows may be Sony may give early builds of next android OS
Best guide I found online. Thanks!

I think it would be wise to mention not to forget to backup TA partition with DRM keys before bootloader unlock.
Thank you very much. This tutorial covered all the issues I ran into so I knew what to do.
Btw, the .bat for allowing unsigned drivers doesn't work on Windows 8. A quick google search helped me but maybe you might want to add that to your tutorial for other, less techy users.

if your bootloader can't be unlocked it means that you can root your device, but won't be able to install any custom firmware. But you can install XZDR recovery.
Once you get the bootloader unlocked what is the root method? Also, is there a different process for flashing roms?

to root device you don't have to unlock bootloader. Unlocking is for installing custom ROMs.
That I understand. Thank you. I was asking since i already unlocked the bootloader and am unrooted. What is the process to gain root at this point?

Use Flashtool. It can automatically unlock bootloader. Only unlock code 0xFBCD6A2B26CB8F88 is needed.
Cant figure out which file to replace and where it is. Can get my tab to recognize in adb devices mode but nothing is coming up when i type fastboot devices in adb. It is not recognized. I am stuck. Any help will be appreciated. I have got unlock code and the usb inf file but no light further.

[Q] Cannot get Fastboot working on HTC One M8 for no apparent reason ! Help me ! : (.

What up fellow Android Power Users,
I am hoping some one could be savvy enough to help me out.
I am working with an HTC One M8 and I have rooted it, unlocked the bootloader, ran an exploit to turn S-off, and flashed a custom rom called SlimKat 4.4.2 also flashed ClockworkMod recovery as well as Busybox binaries.
SO my adb works just fine via USB on my Ubuntu Linux 14.04 laptop as far as rebooting into the bootloader but when I try to run as root, i get the reply "adbd cannot run as root in production builds."
Also, when i am trying to use Fastboot USB to run a command to change my CID ( I have a T-mobile CID and I want to SuperCID my phone in order to flash a Google Play Edtion 4.4.3 ROM ) all I get back is "waiting for device" and nothing else happens. HELP. Btw I am not a noob but I am seeking answers from users a little more experience than me. But Don't do me with layman's terms, please. What is a production build and why can I not run as root ? I am baffled.
Thank you for your time.

unfortunately no. but al those things are very simple. just follow steps one by one and you haven' t any problems. most important is that you have proper drivers installed.

i rooted my phone with this app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=1314#downloads
it helps a lot and my phone was rooted in less than 10 minutes
To point you in the right direction...
First thing with a HTC is to understand S-ON / S-OFF vs Unlocked / Locked Boot-loader vs Root.
S-ON / S-OFF is Security, and unique to HTC phones.
With the phone S-ON you can still flash a new kernel (boot.img) and flash new ROM's such as Cyanogenmod (and many more!).
With the phone S-OFF you can flash things like the radio, change the CID (Carrier ID) and more, but being unable to S-OFF is not the end of the world.
Bootloader Locked / Unlocked.
With a locked bootloader, you can still gain root, however depends heavily on the exploit and version of android. A locked bootloader is the main restriction on any device.
With an unlocked bootloader, you can now flash custom recoveries (or just boot into them). Flash custom ROM's, and Flash custom Kernels.
HTCdev.com will allow you to unlock your bootloader by following the instructions on there.
Root = Root, i.e. performing commands or having apps perform functions as the systems Superuser (Administrator) account on your device.
You can have your device S-ON, unlock your device, flash a custom ROM, and not be rooted. It's just most custom ROM's ship with root enabled.
Hopefully the above explains (very basically) the differences between a few terms.
And you most certainly do not need to flash a custom recovery in order to install a custom ROM.
Rob
in all honesty
Unless you really really need it to be unlocked I would honestly advise against unlocking and rooting for this device... when i got mine I loved how smooth the original rom was, but being a long time samsung user I was used to flashing anything with minimal impact. But right now this device has 0 development happening and most people who have unlocked and rooted the EU version of this phone have ended up regretting it as there is no way to restore the original eu firmware...
If you do decided to do it please please please make a full backup of the eu rom before hand... and if you do god i think so many members would love you for posting it on here
but in my own opinion I wouldn't go through with the process again...
@torchwolfery we're sharing exactly the same opinion

Hi Guys,
As I mentioned in my brief explanation of the different terms of rooting / unlocking etc.
You can unlock, and root, while still keeping the stock recovery, and stock ROM.
This means you can root the original ROM to use root apps, and have root, but then simply factory reset to go back to full stock (albeit with an unlocked bootloader).
When you unlock your boot-loader the device will do a factory reset, take a backup at this point, by booting into TWRP (but you don't need to flash TWRP permanently onto the phone.
Instead of >fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Simply type >fastboot boot recovery.img
Your device will load TWRP, allow you to do a full backup, install superuser / supersu.
Once you exit the recovery, your phone still contains the stock recovery.img, stock boot.img, and stock system.
Hope that helps some others before they flash recovery.img (no need!) and then flash an AT&T ROM on the international version.

thanks we know this now and we are not trying to somehow blame you but the fact is that unlocking the bootloader and rooting has caused some issues for us on the international versions... your tutorial works great and gave us what we wanted but sadly there have been downsides on the international version... but now I've manged to get mine fully functioning now

If you can't get it via button combo then use enable USB Debugging and use adb: adb reboot bootloader
For adb and fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Rooting via Kingroot supposedly works once the bootloader is unlocked as mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-desire-c/help/sowftware-update-t3255022
They didn't mention which software update it was on, but knowing Cricket and HTC, they probably never released but the original one so might be worth a try. Keep in mind that there does not seem to be an RUU to restore the phone if something goes wrong so proceed at your own risk.
Rooting is possible

It can be done by following HTCdev inductions. I did but it took a few tries to unlock the bootloader. After that any progress will root it. Even Kingroot. But there is no recovery for that device. So it's editing your stock rom. So stay backed up. The twrp 626S recovery will flash to it, I been playing with it but can't say if any rom will flash successfully yet. so my words should only be taken as offering my personal experience not as any professional advice

Thank you I wish I would have seen this sooner though.. I sat on it and cracked the screen and my digitizer dont stand a chance lol oh well.:crying:.
Root htc 625 .. use twrp for the HTC desire 626s as it works with the 625 as well.. First unlock bootloader, I downloaded java (offline) version and it worked fine, then HTC manager. Then I downloaded the usb drivers for the phone(may not be needed). Then adb and fastboot (not from HTC link, found it on Google which worked much faster to download. Noe after bootloader unlocked kingroot will root it or flash the twrp img using command prompt, just type flash recovery and the name of the twrp file.. now I had to type - flash recovery twrpblablabla.img. img, so I had to add *.img at the end so it had the twrp name which ended in .img and then i had to add another - .img ..... not sure why but I was messing around and that's what got it flashed. Then I flashed superU using twrp recovery.. now I did root with kingroot after bootloader was good but that's cause the whole (.img) thing. I went back after and got the adb command to do it the way I wanted to at first.. plus rooted another HTC 625 that way..
Any questions message me I will help and can send links to the files needed.. Mau. Thing was using twrp for 626s and the .img added at the end so it looked like twrp3.2.1.img.img )
May have had a space before the last .img , can't remember so if it don't work for you try that. Help needed just ask I will be glad to help as it took me a long time to get the right info and actually do it.
Anyone have j727U and got twrp on it let me know, I will pay.
