HTC Dumlock Instructions:
Install the build of TWRP using your method of choice, but you must actually flash TWRP to recovery. No fastboot booting it. We need it in recovery so that this build of TWRP will be flashed to your boot. This new build of TWRP has features in it to easily restore your original boot.
Reboot into recovery.
Make a backup of your phone.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock. (If you don't see HTC Dumlock then you need to remove any custom TWRP theme that you might be using.)
Tap Install HTC Dumlock. This will install the app and binaries needed to make everything work nicely.
Reboot your device.
Find and open the HTC Dumlock app.
If/when prompted, give the app root (SuperUser) permissions.
Tap the Execute HTC Dumlock button.
Wait patiently for a couple of minutes. It takes a little while.
If your device doesn't reboot automatically, reboot it manually. Reboot it normally. DO NOT reboot it to recovery.
You should now be in your recovery, but your recovery is flashed into boot.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock.
Tap Restore Original Boot.
Use your recovery like normal. Flash a new kernel. Restore a backup with a different kernel. Do whatever you please!
Consider donating!
Note, you must repeat steps 8 through 17 EVERY TIME you need to flash boot.
Installation:
Unlock bootloader at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Make sure fastboot is unchecked in power options and turn phone completely off
Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot erase cache"
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

Go unlock your bootloader. Then inside of TWRP it should detect that your not rooted and automatically root . If it doesn't prompt you. There are two links in the OP that you flash in recovery that will give you root.

Ok to make sure I understand you install the twrp attached and install the Dumlock and this will allow us to flash the boot.img in twrp and not through fastboot?

Coming from samsung devices, all this fastboot stuff and HTC Dumlock is super confusing.. I'm rooted and running TWRP, but I'm certainly not comfortable with flashing another ROM and kernel yet. Thanks for the thread though, I extremely appreciate you work and time!:good:
Edit: Do I follow these exact steps to flash a full ROM zip with a non-stock kernel as part of it, or are there extra steps.. Really hate sounding like a noob, just do not want to do something dumb..

The international roms have a script in them that flashes the kernel with the Rom. No need to fastboot or anything like that.

Make sure your phone is on Fastboot and not HBOOT and it's plugged in good.

Nice job! This is really tempting me as I try to hold out for the Galaxy S4. Your making it very hard for me not to go buy this

(Q) How To Flash A Recovery From Bootloader 1.5

I'm on CDMA Evo 3d with hboot 1.5 S-ON, unlocked bootloader via HTC METHOD, & on software 2.17. I'm not near a computer so I can't use adb etc & I don't even know how to do that. I've tried several ways to do this from bootloader! I tried renaming the TWRP to PG86IMG.zip & it told me "main version older, press power to reboot now" several times. I tried clockworkmod as PG86IMG.zip & it says "parsing" but nothing ever happens. People say these worked for them but it hasn't at all for me. Could any of you expert rooters help me please so I can use custom rom? I been stock for too damn long since OG EVO Launch when I had one! Much appreciated & I'll thank

There are definitely a few options and a few things to be aware of.
HTC official unlock does NOT unlock kernel/boot write access while in the custom recovery mode. Still is helpful to flash the custom recovery as all other features will work from recovery mode, just not the ability to write to the kernel/boot partition.
This means there are only two modes you can flash the kernel from, either fastboot mode (requiring a computer) or standard Android mode, for which I made a handy application, Flash Image GUI.
1) Using my application, Flash Image GUI, will allow you to flash custom kernels and also select ROM .zip files, and then load the kernel out of the ROM .zip, while then booting into recovery mode to load the rest of the ROM (system portion). My application will also allow you to flash the recovery.img or any .zip file containing the recovery .img.
2) Using the fastboot mode there are two ways to flash a kernel, both require being connected to another device, generally a computer.
2-A) fastboot boot c:\downloads\recovery.img . This command will temporary load the custom recovery with write access to the kernel partition and allow a full kernel .zip or ROM .zip to be loaded correctly.
2-B) fastboot boot c:\downloads\boot.img . This command will flash just the kernel boot.img file. The associated kernel modules, such as WiFi will not be loaded and must be loaded by the ROM .zip in the custom recovery, otherwise WiFi will not work.
HTC unlock is definitely very helpf when compared to no official option, but has a few quirks forcing us to take a few extra steps.
Hope that helps clarify a bit!
I have tried this & it says "main version older" idk what that means but it didn't work!

Either download superusers from the market free version works fine or just click okay on it.. May need superusers from the market. Didn't have any issues.
Got it, but how do I get superuser to give them the permissions? In the app I see the "app" catergory with nothing there.
Remember, all I've done is HTC unlock to unlock bootloader. I'm still s-on with no custom recovery, if I can get that I'll be fine. I got everything you said also

This is gonna sound retarted man sorry just need to know does your hboot say unlocked at the top?
I know alot of folks were having issues when they applied the unlock code bin part using the HTC Dev way and it would say sucess but nothing would happen the phone would sit in hboot and no new screen would come up and say do you wish to unlock the bootloader.... Only way around that was to download the latest RUU exe 2.17 and use it then reapply the unlock code bin
I am trying to figure out why TWRP 2.0 was havin issues along with CWM and so I I have been swapping recoverys around on my phone all day to see if I could get the same issue you have been having...
I am running outta ideas since everything isn't wanting to flash over it's acting like the boot is still locked even tho you unlocked it.
Im hboot 1.5 S-ON
If nothing works you could try this then redo the custom recovery.. by fastboot flash.

Might be able too. PC86IMG.ZIP I just can't figure out why nothing is flashin over to your phone recovery wise...
I did the same thing took the OTA software update before I rooted and did the HTC DEV applied the unlock code and chose to unlock boot even tho said it could void my warranty. Then I downloaded TWRP 2.0 which I don't recommend using put that in my platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or what ever you renamed the file tooo.
This is the recovery I was using worked fine just copy the file that is in the zip to your platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
I really am tryin to figure out what is going wrong with the recoverys not wanting to flash over....
I dunno why cwm isn't flashing right..
Tried to pg86img with stock recovery & failed. When dad gets here I'll take a pic proving I unlocked with HTC method. Idk what's going on really because people say these steps worked for them & nothing has worked for me at all!

I believe you on the unlocked part. Man im just stumped on this part the way it's acting up seems like the phone is still locked....
I have been tryin to screw up mine to see if I have the same issue as you...
I am really tryin to figure this out lol.
When you did the HTC Dev method you had latest java JDK and HTC sync 3.0 I think was the latest and ADB and the tools it needs downloaded...
Also you don't have two pc86img.zip files on your SD card right?
Some of the PC86IMG.ZIP files might error or not work due to them being named PC86IMG.ZIP.ZIP
Does the computer you were using have ADB installed on it with the tools you can download when you open up SDK manager there called SDK tools or platform tools...
Since you need these to work adb and make sure debug is on in the main menu of your phone under applications development.
I dunno why superusers wouldn't flash either.. Might be something with ADB or SDK tools or Platform tools aren't downloaded. On windows 7 if your right click on your platform tools while holding down shift it will open up a quick path to adb
The stock recovery I used astro zip to zip the stock signed recovery.img. It was named stock signed recovery.zip when I zipped it. Then I renamed it to PG86IMG.zip & powered off phone. I went to bootloader & it found the file like before, said "parsing" & nothing else happens but it goes back to the bootloader highlighting fastboot. I did this several times by clicking on fastboot & then clicking bootloader so it can load the file again. Still it said "parsing" & nothing else. Like before, the only one that said something different was twrp which said "main version outdated" & the only option after that was to reboot using power button!
Also, I'm not near a computer & the super user I downloaded is from the market! I'm on hboot 1.5 unlocked WITH software 2.17. Do you think it's because the ota?

Nope there isn't. It's not a folder named recovery on the root of the SD card or on the main root of the SD card where you see the really important files & you can see the system apks etc! What does this mean?

build.prop help

So I made the changes some changes to the build.prop file on my EVO 4G LTE from an androidcentral post to restore the functionality from the whole apple vs htc feud. This is exactly what I did:
Found the line ro.da1.enable=true
Changed it to ro.da1.enable=false
Directly under it I added the line ro.da1.method=false
I rebooted.
This is where my problem is. After I rebooted I got the HTC boot screen and then my phone gets stuck on a black screen. I was being and idiot and used Root Explorer (since I had already had it installed) to make the changes to the build.prop file instead of using my computer. I would like to know if there is a way to get my phone past this black screen, I can still pull up hboot so I don't think it's bricked but I'm not entirely sure. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance for any help and thank you for your time.
You didn't nandroid first? (Admittedly, I didn't either, but mine booted fine after edits)
When you edited it with Root Explorer, it should have created a backup of original with .bak added to it. So, you could reflash a stock ROM, or if you have adb set up, there are commands to replace with the backup RE made. Unfortunately, I haven't used adb enough to know the commands. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will post the commands.

did u save the file afterwards?
Thanks for the reply scottspa74!
Unfortunately I didn't do a nandroid backup, but I do have the .bak file as well as the original build.prop file on an sdcard. As far as reflashing a stock ROM would I need to have access to recovery or can I flash through hboot? Also if you dont mind me asking, where can I find a stock ROM to flash?

I can't get into recovery mode from hboot, I'm guessing it is because I don't have a custom recovery maybe?
You should be able to flash a custom recovery from fastboot.
Fastboot flash recovery <insert file name of recovery>.IMG
TWRP recovery is the one currently working the best for the EVO LTE atm. Once you download and flash you should be good to go.
Sent from my EVO LTE using XDA premium
OP, are unlocked, or rooted only?
If rooted only, DO NOT flash any recoveries as you'll probably end up having to do a RUU to recover.
A recovery can ONLY be flashed after the phone has been unlocked (htcdev or other means). Unfortunately right now, there are no other methods, so htcdev is your only option (to unlock).
Whoops shouldn't have assumed he was rooted and htcdev unlocked.

Ok so I did the HTCDev unlock, flashed stock ROM, and my evo is back to normal, a little better actually since it has custom recovery now. Anyways, thank you everyone for your input, you guys have been a big help!

[How-To] How to install custom roms/TWRP without root on 1.22.651.3

Ok so I could not wait for the root to come out and I could not for the life of me figure out how to install a custom rom without first rooting your EVO LTE first. But I was randomly doing stuff and I figured out how to install a custom recovery onto a phone that has 1.22.651.3.
Edit: This method seems to get rid of the "This build is for development purposes only.
Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission.
Failure to comply may lead to legal action." text. I am looking into this. my device is S-ON not S-OFF so this might be something.
Before you can do this you need to have an unlocked bootloader.
1. Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/?h0qfd9idc6h3c03
2. Place the file into where your android sdk folder is.
3. Put your phone into bootloader mode.
4. Click Fastboot and make sure your device is in FastUSB mode.
5. Open command prompt on your computer.
6. In command prompt locate the folder where you put the image in for me its "cd c:\android-sdk-windows
7. Type in "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.1-jewel.img"
8. Hit enter.
The image should be pushed onto your device and TWRP should now be installed.
You should mention that you need to be at least HTC DEV Unlocked in order to install a custom recovery, a working Link, and proper way to push a file.

Also I have noticed that doing this gets rid of the "This build is for development purposes only.

It could be the rom I am using that did it. Not sure.... I will look into it.....

I honestly had no idea that even existed. I only go on XDA xD. I guess Iwill just get my posted deleted then. But what was not mentioned in that post was about that HTC DEV text that appears when you unlock the bootloader. From what I understand the only way to get rid of that is through S-OFF but I never did S-OFF and the text is not appearing on my phone. This is very mystifying.

Honestly the text doesn't bother me and don't delete the post just update it to correct information some people are lazy and don't read the thread and post or even do a simple search I admit I've done that but it's also been clear to me people just take it as is so just update with simpler instructions dude like go here and after update here after flashing a rom for some reason it would only update after I flashed a rom fyi

this is where I found regaw mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
after unlocking/rooting I used quick boot to get to TWRP and flashed this rom
This is the rom I used
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764914
You need to flash the kernel separately. Grab boot.img installer or use fastboot. Reboot the phone and hold power+volume down to get into the bootloader, then select recovery. I'm not familiar with boot.img installer but with fastboot you extract the boot.img from the rom and place it in the adb folder and with the phone in fastboot and in the terminal type fastboot flash boot boot.img

You didn't help him. All you did was tell him to go to live support to get help from someone there. He shouldn't have to thank you for that. The fact that you posted that mess after someone gave him the right instructions makes this a useless post anyways.

And by the way as I was unable to understand he wasn't able to enter into recovery as op is having clear instructions about such issues and entering in recovery so I thought to route him to the owner of software

Because adb is for Android, fastboot is a command line tool that you run from hboot. Type fastboot devices instead and you will see you phone listed

I had the same problem that he's having, and for some reason I couldn't get the command to work either. Not sure why. I ended up flashing the boot.img found on THIS PAGE for Capt Throwback's stock rooted ROM in recovery and it worked.

You were trying to run android debug commands in hboot and you fixed it with a stock kernel? Because that's what my post is referring to
If fastboot and adb don't see your device, make sure you have JAVA installed. That's what confounded me, initially.
hurled from my AOKP'd Evo LTE. Enjoy.
Come to think of it, probably. I might have been in HBoot, and not in Fastboot... Good call.

That's because you have to change the path of where your cmd prompt is looking. If you haven't changed it then it wont find adb inside of sdk. change the pathway so it looks inside SDK then looks inside the tools folder or whatever folder contains the adb.exe. After its changed correctly it will find adb

Did you know if it had an Engineer's HBOOT before? Writeflagsecure 3 is to remove S-OFF. You didn't need to do that to go stock.
Try flashing a recovery?
If this for insurance purposes? Just wondering what you're trying to do with your phone since it was working when you got it.

No offense, but you keep saying things like "i think" or I "believe"; if you want our help, we need to know if you did it or not.
What recovery were you flashing?
Basically, what I'm saying is you might have deleted your recovery since you're saying that you keep ending up on the bootloader. You need to flash a recovery into your phone. If this doesn't make sense, just let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.
EDIT:
Follow these directions and then select RECOVERY from your bootloader. Let us know what happens please.

I hear you, it can be overwhelming at first. I've been flashing since the WM 6.5 days and still don't know as much as some of the people here!
When you select RECOVERY, it's bringing you back to the BOOTLOADER screen, right?
If that's the case, the RECOVERY may have been removed, which is why I'm saying to flash a new one in. Did you follow the instructions on that thread I linked to?

Just saw this. No, you should be using fastboot commands, not ADB
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
To begin, do you have the Android SDK installed on your computer? (Platform Tools)
You save the TWRP .img file in that folder.
Shift+Right Click on the folder and click Open Command Prompt Here
The phone should be connected to the PC
From the BOOTLOADER, go to FASTBOOT
It should say FASTBOOT USB
You can double check by typing 'fastboot devices'
Then run 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'
recovery.img will be named whatever your TWRP file is named
Then for good measure do 'fastboot reboot'
Now, you should be back in BOOTLOADER
Go to RECOVERY, and what do you see?

I've had no problems with 2.6 personally but either one will work. Once your in
Recovery you can download a ROM on your computer and on adb use.
adb push "C:\Documents and Settings\Josh\My Documents\Downloads\ViperDNA_1.3.5.zip" sdcard
Clearly that's how I would do it via my computer after you type adb push you can hit the space bar and drag the file to the command prompt and drop it there that will do the dirty work lol then you just hit space and tell it to install on the sdcard.
Dont let your phone or computer go to sleep or the push will corrupt the file it can take up to 10 mins to transfer the file and once you hit enter it won't acknowledge its actually transferring Dont worry it is. It will tell you when its done how long it took and how much it transfered. After that you can flash the ROM and you should be golden man!
