New tf201 owner question - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello Community,
I bought a prime today due to my screen was accidentally broken on my other 10" tablet that was a Tegra 2 device. It was going to cost almost $200 to replace the glass myself and I found and paid $200 for my 32 GB Prime. From what I've read this tablet has a lot of potential once rooted and custom rom installed.
The tablet has 4.1.1 and today when I logged on it updated to the latest firmware.
The question I have is, does it matter whether I leave the bootloader locked or is it better to unlock when installing a custom rom. I don't care about warranty.
I'm looking at energy or wooki rooms to install. This is the first android device I've owned that I had to do something with the bootloader. What I don't want to do is do something that is not needed and brick it. I've read about the motochopper method and then I read a different method that goes through the unlocking process. I just need some feedback on what is better choice?
This is the guide I think is the one to follow→ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147972. Is this the best method?
Thanks for any suggestions. I always try to ask the members before I start just to make sure i'm on the correct path.
Btw, what is the deal with only one speaker. I know I read about it before I bought it, I thought it was just a misprint. The volume is not loud enough on most tablets with 2 speakers let alone one. bang head on wall.... Are there any good sound mods available to flash?
I always hate the first time I time I root a new device and feel like a noob all over again. The last device I rooted was my Galaxy S3, that took all of 5 minutes to do everything. I found out I liked scripts.
Thanks again..
Todd

You cannot install a custom rom without unlocking.
Rooting does what it says. It gives the tablet root privelages (su) but that does not allow you to install a custom recovery that will allow you to install a custom rom.

Thanks that is what I needed to know. On my other devices I didn't worry about unlocking the boot loader. But, now i know that it needs to be unlocked.
Thanks.

[Q] How dangerous is rooting/flashing on this phone?

Hi guys, after waiting all day, the courier finally dropped off my awesome S3, then I had to run to the local Optus shop to have my simcard snipped, I'm loving the phone..... But I'm not the biggest fan of touchwiz, have no need for the bloaty apps, and it seems slower than it should be considering the specs, so I'm itching to root this baby and install an AOSP or AOKP rom. But I'm still undecided whether or not I want to keep this, or sell it and get the Nexus 4, so I really really can't afford to brick this phone, it's a very expensive piece of hardware and I just got it. So realistically and honestly, how dangerous is rooting/flashing on this phone? I do have rooting and flashing experience on multiple phones, and also have bricking experience on multiple phones. From my understanding because of "Download mode" the chances of hard bricking are pretty low and getting out of a softboot is pretty easy, I've heard some things about people losing IMEI numbers, how can I avoid that?

very dangerous if you do not know what you're doing. Very simple if you take the time to read and follow instructions. I'm not a technical guy or that good with computers but I spent a lot of time reading and finally decided to take a stab at rooting. My S3 is the 4th phone i rooted.

I know what I'm doing in general, never rooted an S3 specifically, have rooted a Desire Z, Atrix 2, and Galaxy S. So I've been around the block a few times when it comes to rooting and flashing, I had 3 Desire Z's with bad EMMC chips, they bricked even without me flashing anything, the first one had no warranty so I had to buy another out of pocket that's why I'm so paranoid. I might just keep it stock for another week or two, do some more reading, then when I finally flash a silky smooth bloatless rom I can enjoy it even more.

in that case it's very simple. I rooted 3 S3s using the same process and all were a success. I didn't bother to wait to root my phone. My wife bought me this phone for my bday and the same day I opened the box was the same day I rooted it. I hate touchwiz and i hate bloat.

From my reading I've gathered that there is CF-Root and then the S3 Toolkit. For CF-Root do you recommend the auto one or the latest supported cf-root.
Use the cf root if you want root+ recovery, auto root for just root
It is very straight forward to do and safe as long as you read instructions

Cheers for the help and recommendation mate, seems like a nice and simple rooting method, it's pretty late and I need to be up early tonight so I best not do it right now and risk screwing something up due to sore eyes. If I do it tomorrow I'll update the thread with how I went .

i use mac and rooted all the phones on mac. this is the method i used:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx/
very easy.
Easiest phone to root i've ever known.
Get the toolkit. That is literally it.
Follow the on screen instructions and download a custom rom for your model.
If you fail at this then your a doughnut.
Rooting FTW
Rooting is really good and it is not dangerous in my opinion. So you should go for it.

[Q] Risk unlocking and flashing a rom?

Hello everyone, so im a bit confused. I have my galaxy s i9000 and i flashed thousands of rom without caring knowing its flexible to get it back again, heck i soft bricked it like 5 times . Now my question is should i risk voiding my warranty and bricking my pime for rooting/flashing a rom on it. So i want to take your opinions on is it worth it( like for the galaxy s I had to do it to remove the stupid lag) but i dont have any lag on the prime, so should i risk it all??
Stay Cool
I'd hope that you'd be able to answer that question for yourself.
If you are unable to list several shortcomings and limitations of it being stock, then why are you even thinking of risking it?
Myself, I bought a Nook Color 18 months ago with the full intention of rooting. I wasted no time in doing so. Of course those things are virtually unbrickable.
The Transformer Prime, OTOH, well... not so much. I haven't felt a pressing need to unlock and flash the ROM.
Do what you will, but unless you can quickly rattle off at least half-a-dozen limitations of its current config, it seems like it's a waste of time to fiddle with it.
So, I'm in similar situation. I had 3 android phones and all rooted, unlocked and with custom roms, but with Prime it's different, I'm more affraid of bricking it, because it's more expensive than all of these phones together.
But I'm seriously thinking about it, the main reason is now ROOT (and it can stay for half-a-dozen reasons) because I'm running JB.
And the most annoying thing now is the camera. I have green camera bug on my Prime. Does anyone know from own experience, that this can be fixed after unlocking?
And sorry for my English

Can't say from experience as I've never had a camera problem, but I've read numerous posts and the green camera is always hardware. You may be able to verify by squeezing lightly around the camera and seeing if it clears up temporarily.
Well i have some reasons to root it and i like to flash roms nd stuff mostly for fun, more like a hobby. but as you said this is like more precious and costs more especially after hearing bout asus' custom services that they wont be able to help if anything happens...

I unlocked after letting my 1 year warranty expire. There aren't a ton of ROMs out there for the Prime atm, but it is worth it if you don't have a warranty to protect anyway.
The process of unlocking was painless for me. Downloaded the app, installed, it did its thing. I was on the newest JB OTA. No issues installing TWRP via fastboot.

Thats exactly my problem. For example the green camera bug (tested and it is hardware fault, only strange thing is, it started just after JB update). Let's be honest, Prime is not perfect and you can have some hardware issues, when warranty is quite useful.
@vaibha: And do you know any way how to downgrade from JB?
Just flash gingerbred or ics... Easy...

Thanks for your detailed tutorial
I think there is no way (functional) for downgrading from JB to ICS. Or even gingerbread... on Prime?... (I believe you just swapped GB and HC in your memory).
Of course I may be wrong, I hope I'm wrong. So you did you successfully downgrade? And if you did, how?

Hahaha true, but im pretty sure you can downgrade the prime easily, manually download the software...to sd car...cont.
I thought so, but tried it and it doesn't work. There are 2 threads about it somewhere.
As it is written in another thread: "You cant revert back to the ICS bootloader once you have flashed the newer JB bootloader..."

Dekxster, what subsonic says is right. You cannot downgrade to anything previous to jellybean if you haven't made nvflash backups while on ICS.
Also your green camera is 100 percent a hardware issue and if you haven't unlocked yet then return it for a free fix. If you are unlocked then you will normally have to pay but some people have got away with it. It all depends in what country you are in.
I figured this out, flumpster.
That is why I wrote, you can't downgrade, because I didn't make nvflash (I didn't post the rest of quotation, because I presumed, we don't have nvflash backup, if we are discussing about unlocking, which requires that) and that is why I wrote I don't want to unlock, because now I have hardware issue and they will fix it for free. I think I'll just wait one more year, when will my warranty expire, because who knows, what else might happen.
And are you guys using Hairy Bean? Is it good? Was it worth unlocking?
Because I don't know much about this rom, prefer CM on my phones.
Its worth unlocking if you are careful and dont mind risking hardware defect. A lot of people got a squaretrade or other 3rd party warranty. You can find a deal for $70 and get 2 years full protection...and then unlock without any risk what so ever.

[Q] Does unlocking = rooting?

I wanna use a PS3 controller on my transformer prime. I don't want to install a custom rom, i just want to play some old super nintendo games on my tablet
Can i just unlock the tablet with the asus tool and use the sixaxis app (it requires rooting) ?
When i search for rooting, all i see is "root" "flash" "custom rom"
I really need to know if rooting = unlocking
Thanks a lot!
Rooting gives you administrative privileges via 'su' (superuser) in android.
Unlocking will void warranty. So it is intended for developers and modders who need to read/flash via USB cable from another computer (fastboot or nvflash). You will be able to flash blobs like a custom recovery, a kernel, etc.
A custom rom could be pre-rooted. This means you could flash a rom which is already rooted.

I think you can root some HC- and ICS-versions running on TP without unlocking. Maybe you are able to downgrade to ICS if still updated to JB. Look at this thread.
In this thread you'll find many useful information (i.e. ROOT)

Here I go again lol. Please don't take this the wrong way I am just going to correct a few things.
Unlocking doesn't work just on ics, you can unlock on ics or jellybean as long as you are not one of the unlucky few who have serials that do not unlock or have had your motherboard replaced. You need to unlock to install a custom rom.
You can root ics without unlocking but you cannot root jellybean without unlocking. You also cannot downgrade to ICS without doing the nvflash process first which requires you to be unlocked and on ics.
I find it great that you are trying to give advice because there are very few people who do. I think the problem is you are new here and you are posting what you think is correct instead of what you know is correct. A lot of what you are reading is obsolete and doesn't even apply any more and wrong information is sometimes worse than no information.
Again, I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Any questions feel free to pm me.
I don't remember needing the six axis app to use my ps3 controller. I plugged the controller into my dock, enabled Bluetooth and found the controller, then started playing games

If just 1% of the posts on XDA were as helpful and encouraging as this, then it would be a great place to learn.
Just hope flumpster stays around to keep us right for a long time to come .
Unfortunately, until the mods and/or the OPs of important threads bring things up to date there will be a lot of (often dangerous) misinformation being passed on around here.

Yeah, that's why I hope he's still around for when I do eventually get unlocked and onto a nice smooth custom ROM. My warranty is up in a couple of months but I'll also be waiting to see if Sky ever get around to supporting the Prime on Sky Go before making any decisions.
I've done hundreds of flashing operations on my mobiles over the years but I've never come across a device that seems to brick as easily as the Prime so it will be good to have someone's hand to hold on what sounds like a pretty scary ride .

Well. My curiousty led to a hard-bricked phone
It's definetly official. I am not going to install any more custom roms after this. To make my story breif. I aquired a motorola atrix 2 phone, and had read it could accomdate a custom rom, so I used a one click root method program and the program said it had done its job. I booted into the recovery and installed the rom, which ended in an infinite reboot. Great, so I read more on how to revert back to firmware using rsd lite. I did this, but the battery was dead. so I went out and purchased anther battery, attempted the restore, phone restart, then BOOM. it stayed black and now it wont come on. wtf.
Can any please recommend the proper cable I have to order to get the phone back working>?

Thank you. But an experienced repair guy said my phone wasn't responding to neither the USB jtag or the fast boot. So my phone is dead forever? Should I start digging its grave?
Sure sounds this way, and you shouldn't be doing JTAG through the USB port anyway unless your phone is something special I've never heard of
But in truth rooting your phone won't damage it, it just gives someone the opportunity to do so. I'm a firm believer in rooting all androids so long as they read and understand what they are doing, its very hard to brick a phone if you know what you're doing
So although this phone may be dead forever (unless you find someone who for sure knows the proper way to JTAG it) then still consider rooting your next one, just be sure to completely understand what's going on, and try to stay away from one click roots, its hard to learn anything from this
Best of luck on your next phone
*side note, if you still have warranty and your phone is completely unresponsive chances are you will get your warranty exchange, just play dumb and say "I was playing angry birds and it just froze, now it won't turn on"

I wish I had warranty on this thing. I got it second hand from craigslist. However i've managed to acquire an HTC inspire 4G, what an upgrade from a motorola cliq xt! I would love to install jelly bean on this thing but after messing up the Atrix 2 i'm scared I will F*ck this one up too. I can never find clear and concise instructions on the internet. Every web page I visit, it seems to be someones personal way of doing it. Steps not mentioned, or instructions written for intermediate users. For example, Every video or piece of instruction i've watched on youtube regarding booting into the fast boot on the atrix 2, said something about holding volume up and power button upon booting and I would see something on the top of the screen. However that did not work, First I had to use the volume down and power button, then I would get to this fastboot screen where those recovery options werent available, from there I had to hold both volume buttons down and press the power button twice which would bring me to the recovery options screen. thats just one example, and even then for some reasons I didn't have all the recovery options the instructions spoke of... for example. Very annoying and frustrating. On a side note, is there anyone on this site who lives in the US that can unbrick my atrix 2? The guy who repair phones I took it to said theres a device for 250.00 bucks he's waiting to get that can unbrick any device. However he doesnt have the funds and had gotten laid off work. I am just having a hard time believing a simple soft user error could permanently damage my device forever and that as sophiscated as our technology has gotten there's absolutely no way to revive it.

I can't attest to the videos you saw, but for most androids this is the best site with the most info, I only suggest being sure how to root before you do it, and to understand how the method works as well. When your not understanding this is when bricks happen.
I know it can be lots of reading and lots of questions but in the long run its worth the time
As for the JTAG equipment there are many who have it and you can easily spend less than 250 on getting the proper stuff.
Every logicboard is different so maybe this machine he speaks of has a wide variety of cables that come with it, but he's still paying too much
Anyway, most people seem to charge 50$ or so to JTAG it back, if that's more than the phone is worth to you just sell it on eBay for parts

[Q] Fire HDX 7 - Is it safer to flash Roms and Root now?

First, I apologize if this ins't the right area but it seems like a General question.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire HDX 7" and have had it about a week now. With all the Amazon Bloat and lack of Google apps I need more out of it. I am not a beginner with flashing roms and such, my HTC One is Rooted, CyanogenModed, and has a boot loader, anyways...
I have spent the last couple days reading up on the ways to do it on the HDX 7 and heard many warnings and bricks of this device, but some of the posts are a little bit older. I can't really tell which method of Rooting/Flashing is the safest out of all the different ones. My current OS version is 13.3.2.1. Using the Safestrap looks pretty easy and from what I understand is that even if you do brick it you can recover the original?
My question is... Is it any safer to flash a Rom lately (due to the updating problems?), and how safe is just rooting it for the time being? Also, what method/tools would you suggest to use? I don't like the FireOS and would like to get it close the a standard Android and/or CyanogenMod.
Thanks for your time.
well

actually you came just in time and have the right firmware and place go to the development section and start reading we now have a brand new recovery that bypasses the security on our bootloader. I would advise reading reading these threads thoroughly. And your particular software is rootable with the existing utilities we have in the development section also. There has been a lot of development very recent keep in mind they are first version may be buggy but the utility .94 can get you rooted and safe from updates until you can do more research. And get your new recovery in place.
Thanks, by what you said I am guessing the internal workings haven't been figured out quite yet. I will head over to the development boards and see if I can find. Sadly I updated to FireOS 4.5 not knowing that there wasn't software to to roll back for versions above 1X but read that I can call Amazon and have it rolled back so no worries.
nope

they have shut that opportunity down I believe it was probably getting abused. And I believe they were only able to roll back from 4. 1. 1 from now on

I actually just got it rolled back, I read that people saying it doesn't happen anymore, but the very nice tech lady down graded me from 4.5.1 to 13.3.2.7. She stayed on the phone until it was completly reset. =) Now I should be able to root it easily with towelroot.
I was being pretty damn charming to her though, lol
I'm sure they don't want to and won't do it most of the time, but I is still 100% possible on their end, it's just wether they want to or not. I had a pretty decent story too, not just 'its slow and buggy'

after rolling back a couple of them it helps if you say that it was on version 3 then you updated to the latest one then make up some plausable combination of symptoms for example the one i went with is that my device restarts alone every 20 minutes or so and almost no apps work and then proceed to say that you were happy with how it was before it was updated
EDIT:also to note that i have yet to have them refuse me a single time through chat
well

I have just been reading about several people that have been rejected and why. There is a rumor that they gave it to their developers only and their technicians will go through your device logs and decide whether or not it is appropriate. Again rumor. I do not need roll back at least so far I have stuck with the old software all year...I just hate having to mess with trying to keep the OTA blocked. I just want them to take me off the ota push servers.
