[Q] How to root galaxy s2 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how to root galaxy s2 i9100 official jelly bean without using odin or computer.
i mean direct installation of cwm and superuser through custom recovery. i want soft root only for using titanium backup and other root apps not for installing custom roms. just a soft root without changing the kernel.

You need odin.

Basically this is a combination of Chainfire's root for galaxy note and DoomLord's tool for easy rooting.Worked perfectly for me on my Galaxy S2 KF3.
So no need for USB jig to reset counter and no need for ODIN.
1. I rooted my SGS2 through DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v3.0](zergRush Exploit). [16/Nov][ROOTING/UNROOTING] DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v3.0](zergRush Exploit) - xda-developers
I am not sure this method works for everybody, but I was on KF3 Kernel and got root in less than 2 minutes.
2. Now getting the custom recovery to flash ROM's and without using ODIN was the difficult part.
ROM manager to flash CWM Recovery gives error signature verification failed as you are still on Samsung Android Recovery 3e.
3. I downloaded the InitialCFRootFlasher.zip from the 2nd post of Chainfire's thread in galaxy note forum [22.11.2011][CF-Root 5.0] KJ1/4/6, KK1/9/A - su+bb+CWM5 - xda-developers
4. Extract the above downloaded file where you will remember.
5. Download the CF Root Kernel for your respective device. Instructions on the thread itself for which Kernel to download. In my case I downloaded from Chainfire's SGS2 root thread CF-Root-SGS2_XW_CLK_KF3-v4.0-CWM4.zip
6. Extract the downloaded CF-Root kernel till you get a zIMAGE file.
7.Place the zImage file from the CF-Root kernel in the zImage folder from InitialRootFlasher
- Start "already-rooted.bat" and follow the instructions
8. If all went you will have root+CWM Recovery +CWM Manager . No binary counter increase, no ODIN..
Once again its Chainfire and DooMlord's method no credits to me, just posting this if somebody has problems installing CWM recovery and CWM manager as I had trouble after gaining root from DoomLord's method.
You could have just done a google search for this ..

CWM Recovery mode not working

Hey guys, I've had my S2 for about a month and decided to root it using Chain fire's post. I have the Telstra firmware(just incase), stock kernel and CF-root kernel, after rooting I flashed the stock kernel to remove the warning triangle, I still had root access and then tried using CWM zImage via the app... my phone rebooted into recovery mode but says:
-- copying media files...
Successfully copied meida files
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Updating application..
successfull...--Applying Multi-CSC...
Installing " "
Can't access to '/system/csc/TEL/sytem/
Successfully applied multi-CSC
then finally the normal(not clockworkmod from root) android recover options appear.
Does anyone know of a different root to CF-Root where I can use a stock kernel that doesn't hijack the recovery options?.

Recovery is part of the kernel, so all kernels will overwrite the recovery when you flash them.
Follow the guide in the cf-root thread to the letter to get CWM and remove the yellow triangle, or buy a USB jig and use it to reset counter and remove the yellow triangle.
I did exactly as the guide says, recovery now only works if I don't use a stock kernel.
I went into download mode, opened odin making sure repartition isn't checked, loaded CF-root-KF4.tar, got root access, the phone rebooted i made sure it was rooted and checked out CWM recovery then went into download mode again and flashed the stock kernel from Intratech's Telstra Carrier branded firmwares Thread and root was fine so I checked CWM recovery and it was gone, I then extracted zImage from the CFroot I flashed and placed on the phone /sdcard I ran CWManager clciked flash kernel>Zimage and it rebooted into the normal recovery mode with CSC crap there still.
How is there not a root program that doesn't modify (doesn't change features) recovery mode? I'd like to update by KIES in future and need to keep the stock kernel I believe.
Other root methods are posted on XDA .

No useless posts please
it wasn't useless there are other methods ie super one click root

Other methods to root
Zergrush
Superoneclickroot
You *need* a custom kernel in order to have CWM recovery on the SGS2, if you just want root, you can flash a root kernel, then flash your stock kernel.
You will LOSE CWM but KEEP root.
Also CF-root is a stock kernel, just with a modified initramfs (added root and CWM recovery)
I think JJ was referring to searching the forum and you will find the other methods..... So not useless unless you need spoon feeding

When I said Useless I mean not being helpful, and it wasn't I've checked the forums which I thought I read superoneclick doesn't work on retail phones.
and on the and then there was root I saw the guide has been super-ceded by CF-root, most guides on youtube are CF-root I'll have to just look around more.
@Veyka is the superoneclick root working? and what's the alternative you suggest?.

If you need CWM recovery only for a special action, you can flash "injected" CWM temporarily.
Have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28178105 (Method 1 > Instruction 2).
If you need/want permanent CWM recovery, then you have to flash a kernel containing CWM recovery.
E.g. SiyahKernel, SpeedMod, etc. ... nearly all custom kernels have CWM recovery.
If you want a stock kernel with CWM recovery, then flash the corresponding CF-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root) or PhilZ-CWM6 kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31310851) for your ROM.
Good luck !

Help with rooting my Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-19300

Hi all,
I use to own a htc sensation and now well purchased my new shiny S3. Read a couple of threads and do not want to risk bricking this as it only arrived this morning.
So the spec of my model is the following :
Model : GT19300
Android : 4.1.1
Base:19300xxdlid
kernel 3.0.31
build jroo3c
Just to confirm, some tut's said install kies on pc before rooting and connect the device at least once before running the root, others state please remove all samsung software from the pc. Which is correct ?
I also have seen this message : IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE THIS TOOLKIT TO ROOT OR FLASH CUSTOM RECOVERY ON A SNAPDRAGON MODEL SGS3 AS THE INCLUDED IMAGES WILL NOT WORK ON IT
How can i tell which mine is ?
So would you people recommend the toolkit way or the other way, as i have been looking at the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
I'm not a complete newb as i had the sensation for 2 years and had that rooted so just some guidance please as this is a new device cheers
Use cf root

[03.07.2012] CF-Root 6.4 - SuperSU+CWM5.5+CWMManager
I personally used Chainfire's Odin method, which worked flawlessly. No need for Kies, just download Odin and use the .tar file he provides.
If your model number is GT-i9300, you will have the Exynos version of the phone, so you can ignore the warning about Snapdragon processors; that only applies to the LTE US version.
Read the following thread - it tells you everything you need to know.

If i so happen to have installed cf-autoroot instead of cf-root.6.4,
is it safe for me to just do the same procedure for cf-root6.4? like overwriting?

Thanks buddy Root access has been granted. Is this triangle away compulsory or can i just leave it?
How would i go about flashing a custom Rom now? Stick the custom rom zip on sd card and just boot into cwm and boot from zip ?
p.s don't suppose you have a tut on returning to factory default and un rooting just incase i ever need to send it back

have a slight problem, I noticed i had the stock cwm and wanted the touch version. I downloaded the recovery and renamed it recovery.img and then went and installed odin mobile pro after selecting recovery and internal or external it will not find the file recovery.img ? I then thought i would try to download the .tar.md5 file for CWM TOUCH RECOVERY 6.0.1.2, however upon opening odin on my pc and then trying to boot my device into download mode, it just shows the Samsung logo and refreshes. I have managed to boot the device back on since then.
Update I have tried and read about 20 odd posts and everywhere tell me to get the device into download mode, the device wouldn't,However after several attempts I managed to get odin to pick the img file and flash. Upon booting back up i am now stuck with a Samsung boot logo and feel its bricked? Please Help!!!
I can not even return the device under warranty as i was unable to run triangle away ;(

Rooting and flashing .zip files

Hi,
i was thinking about rooting my Galaxy S3 with CFRoot, however i've noticed that it doesnt contain CWM recovery anymore and uses the stock recovery.
How can i root it with CFroot and then be able to flash .zip files (some mod's that i found interesting) ? I want to keep it stock as much as possible
Thanks in advanced

Install the recovery with mobile Odin. Grab tar files in recovery threads.
Use CF root 6.4 with CWM recovery as normal .

get the recovery form original android development section and flash using mobile / pc odin
else, just use cf root 6.4 with pc odin (got root + cwm app + cwm recovery)

[Q] Can I cause any issues trying to root with wrong Build Version?

Hi.
Is the root zip file tied up to the phone build number? Or the model suffice?
What about CWM?
I was recommended using one of the following methods for rooting my i9300 (UBEMA2 4.1.2).
[03.07.2012] CF-Root 6.4 - SuperSU+CWM5.5+CWMManager
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
or
[2013.02.20] CF-Auto-Root [GT-I930x/T/N][SHV-E210*][SHW-M440S]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Both seem fairly easy to perform and they have different zip files for each model. But none of them have anything specific for my Android Build (UBEMA2).
What if I just try with the files in there, can I cause any harm (brick, boot loop, etc) to my device?
Thanks.

Use CF's auto-root method if you're not going to change rom/kernel/etc and you only want to have rooted stock rom. Otherwise flash CF Root 6.4 using odin and then you're ready to. Then I'd suggest flashing any "modern" recovery like PhilZ Recovery (I'm using it), TWRP or even CWM 6.0.3.0. If you're going to change this rom anyway then you can flash any modern recovery directly (w/o CF-Root) because most "cooked" roms are already rooted.
What you need to do if you are picking auto root is make sure you pick the right one for your device...firmware doesn't matter, but device does!
Cf root I is just for the i9300
Auto root is for multiple Samsung devices
