Hi all and thanks for the precious and detailed information you posted in the Forum.
I am quite new with Samsung (Android).
Just left the other World few months ago.
I was using the iPhone and switched to Android because of different considerations like battery, higher display, etc.
I am interested in ROOTing my device (Samsung S3 - GTI9300 International).
May I ask you a couple of questions about this step?
- The ROOT process will remove my installed applications
- After ROOTing the GooglePlay will still be available to update my Applications
- Future FIRMWARES update from Samsung will be available also for ROOTed devices
- unROOTing the device means (easily) reinstall the original FIRMARE or there is an easier step
Many thanks for your (all) help!!!
Happy Android
It depends of how you root it (if you install acustom rom or not) but if it's only the root itself it will not change your phone at all, still your apps, google play working.
But you'll not be able to change firmware with kies, only with flashing new roms. Also unrooting is not hard, and everything is really weel explain on the s3 forum here in XDA

I am just starting.
Interested in ROOT process only by now and of course the unROOT step after.
I will check the S3 forum as per your kind suggestion.
Trying in a while to load and use a "Custom Rom".
Thanks a lot for your replay!!!!!

Hi Guys as my title Says..
i need Help very Badly.
First of all MODS and USERS i'm sorry i didn't knew where to post this thread so if its in in-appropriate section please move it to correct section. THanks
OK my problem is this.
i recently (less than a week ago ) bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 its by Bell Canada and its i9100M. i bought it online since my service provider is Rogers.
i guess this phone is already rooted to unlock it and i can see CWM and SU icon there.
Well i'm a Hardcore Blackberry Fan and have been using Blackberries from last 6 years. I loved the new samsung because of it looks and its screen.
I Had Lot of Problem with it like setting up my yahoo as push email, setting the Ringtone Profile, setting up the Custom Ringtones for Text Messages..
Having wrong time stamps on Recieved TEXT Message.. well i fixed all those by installing apps from market and forwarding my yahoo to my gmail...
i Hated doing all that but infront of the beauty of this phone i had to compromise but today it took 3 hours to find my gps location and day by day im using it i'm hating it .....
SO OK I DID MY RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT ALOT... the more i'm researching the more i'm getting confused...
first of all what is the difference between custom ROM and KERNEL.
i know custom rom could be like operating system but customized by unofficial person.
what the h is KERNEL..
to install rom's or kernel do i really have to root.
To unlock do i have to root or is there a paying method.
also i want to know if i'll go back to stock rom can i still unlock it.and recieve all the updates from samsung or google specially when ICS will be launched.
after unlocking and installing custom root. can i unroot it
and lastly which is best custom kernel and which is the best rom availble.
since been a blackberry user i have very basic needs. i don't play any games or download much apps and if an app is paid..i'll pay for it.. i don't want to jailbreak anything .
all i need is better battery life, gps and network coverage.
Thanks for taking time to read and reply.
Hi there.
I'll try and get through your questions as simply as possible,
Imagine your phone is like a car
A kernel is like the engine of a car - it's the low level machinery that keeps it going.
The Rom is like the body of the car around the engine. Roms can be official (or Stock Roms), or they can be customised by other people.
So, when you install a stock rom - you're installing the kernel, but you're also installing the radio (called a modem or baseband) and the registration (or the CSC which is location specific information) as well as the unique 'body' of the car for that rom - tweaks, default software, etc.
You don't have to have rooted your phone to install a Rom. When you update your phone via Kies, you are, literally, installing an stock rom. You can even install stock roms from elsewhere without rooting your phone. Because stock roms are released in different regions at different times, lots of people update their phones to the latest official roms via this method - no root required.
However, to install a custom, unofficial rom, you will need to root your phone as they will require access to the 'root level directory' of your phone's file system - which is what root really means.
You can find everything you need to know about that, how to root and also lots of stock roms you can install without rooting here:
Some shops will root you phone for you if you want to go down that path and don't want to risk it. But it's easier than you think and the galaxy s2 is very hard to break. There's lots of help available on XDA - just remember to search before you ask so you don't ask a common question the millionth time.
If you have installed a custom rom you can easily re-install a stock rom over it that will still work with Kies and thus be updateable when ICS turns up.
There is no 'best' Rom or kernel. Some Roms go 'as is' and some are customisable to the nth degree if you like fiddling with your phone non-stop. I personally use CheckRom because I like the kitchen app that lets you swap kernels, modems and mods with ease - but check out the Original Android Development threads and see which other roms you like the sound of.
Depending on what you are currently running, a new rom - even a stock one if you're running a very old one - could easily help with battery and range issues. For GPS - try installing FasterFix from the market and see if reassigning your GPS fix to a closer location helps.
Best of luck - it's a great phone once you open up its possibilities
Thanks a lot for the reply
well your reply did help me a lot...
my phone is been already rooted by someone else already from the person i bought it....
as for searching i did a lot.. and its been confusing me more and more ..well thanks for your answer
also as u said S2 is hard to break..i guess u mean is that the JIG thing on EBAY
and as for flashing the stuff i've played with other stuff just not android thing ive replaced the os on BB and jailbreaked iphones and installed macintosh on HP PC and also worked on most of the languages 10 years ago... and i believe nothing is impossible so going to someone else is never an option for me
just want to know as much as stuff i can before going further
well i have few more questions
how can i find which rom or kernel is already installed...
i mean is it possible to tell if its stock or its customized and its customized by which group.
and one last thing.. u know the words u used modem and baseband...
i read about it before...
but my question is ...
IS THE BASEBAND ANYTHING LIKE IPHONE BASEBAND???
u know in iPhones when baseband is updated u r screwed sometimes its hard to jailbreak and definately hard to unlock and reverting changes to baseband....
is it the samething in Galaxy S2 as well...
Thanks a lot for replying...i really appreciate all the time you took to reply.
Thanks once again.
Yeah baseband is the code that handles the phone part of your smartphone. Talking to your wireless provider, 3G, texts all these things are done by baseband.
Flashing a different baseband won't screw your root, and you'd still be rooted. Samsung doesn't make it hard to root as Apple does to jailbreaking. Even if something goes wrong with a new version, you can always revert back to old one using Odin(Samsung ROM flashing tool) and you are good to go.
Thanks a lot... about that quick reply...
i'm gonna collect more information and hopefully i'll be flashing it on weekend...
but how can i find which rom or kernel is already installed...

Everything you need to know can be found here. Most of it, anyway.
Backup your device with cwm when rooted ... So you can always restore to previous state. ;-)
Good luck there. But reading is a must.

sgs ii - xda
also you can go settings - about phone - then look at the bottom fields to see kernel, baseband and build. Quote those and we should be able to tell what you have.

Hello All,
After 5 years of programming, hacking, and cracking iOS and iPhones i decided it was time to quit and start fresh, I got myself the Samsung Galaxy S3 4g i9305 / Telstra
I am new to this entire Android scene, therefore I have several question to ask... your help will be greatly appreciated.
1) I would like to try and remove the preinstalled carrier (Telstra - AUS) ROM and install a stock 4.1.1 Jelly Bean ROM (without any adds or added crap) – How can I go about doing this?
2) Can I back up my current factory ROM so I can restore it if something goes wrong or I change ROMS?
3) How can I root and unroot the device?
4) Are there any precautions I need to take? Are there any irreversible changes that can occur? The main question is; can I always return to factory stock ROM (from the factory), settings ect if something goes wrong?
5) What are Android equivalent to Cydia or Installous?
6) Benefits of rooting the device?
7) Similar Apps to ‘Get Apk’?
8) Best sources for themes, apps, hacks, ect? Maybe a usenet thread?
9) Any interesting tips, guides, sites to help me get a full grasp of the entire Android system?
10) Best ROM available for the s3 4g?
I am sure some of these questions might have been previously covered elsewhere, I have searched for answers but I am still uncertain on several aspects.
thanks you, and I look forward to your feedback.

*******DON`T install KIES. If your Rooting and flashing your phone, you won`t need it, and it could potentially get in your way******
The simplest way to get you started is to .....
1. Install Samsung USB Drivers on your PC - http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/GT-I9100RWAXEU-downloads# (works on all Samsung Devices)
2. Download ODIN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1432843&d=1351270936 - self contained Executable, run it "as is")
Download this (Unbranded UK Official Stock ROM - should work OK) (http://www.hotfile.com/dl/177306141/248b29e/I9300XXDLJ4_I9300OXADLJ4_BTU.zip.html)
Go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969 For an excellent guide how to flash your ROM using ODIN
Now go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 - Excellent Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery flashing guide
You should now have a rooted phone, with The latest official 4.1.1 JB, and a custom recovery flashed. Hope this helps..
If my phone has carrier specific rom, in my case Telstra, do i have to find another telstra? there is another guide here that uses the Optus rom (another Australian carrier) in this case Optus, can i use that one?
[GT-I9305] Australian Samsung Galaxy SIII 4G Root Guide - NOT for other variants
Is the process to unroot the device difficult? will something changeonce it is rooted?
I also noticed that once i get the phone into download mode, the seccond i press the continue button it goes straight into Downloading... Do not turn off target, and i cannot do anything other than hold the power button to reset...
Last issue i am facing, i have read many threads about this same issue, (it may be specific to Australian updates only) i cannot change, move, add, or remove any of the home screen (not lock) dock icons.. and yes i have tried every method but it may be very well something to do with the australian models as others have reported this problem and yet there is no fix for it... - so if i flash the rom will that fix the issue?

Please be aware that 9305 can have a different network circuit that the normal i9300 - read carefully the subforum for 9305!
Also you really need to start looking around - there is no magic tutorial, there are just a HUGE amount of separate posts (and with 9305 you need to be extra careful since there ARE small differences).
I am new to xda forum and I want help from all experts especially from samsung galaxy ace s5830i experienced user.
I have recently bought this smartphone and I want to know in deep.
Like
Q.1 How Will I Backup My Android OS And Other Apps+Data?
Because I am new to this device and want to use some tricks and tweaks and for we should have backup so if something will go wrong, we will recover.
Q.2 How Will I Update My Device To Latest Android Version?
As this device comes with android version 2.3.6, and present is 4.2 or more. I don't know clearly. But everyone wants new things to try. So I want to update my smartphone.
Q.3 What Will I Get After Rooting Galaxy Ace s5830i?
While I was Googling, I got some articles of rooting. I don't understand it carefully. I want it to understand from different views. So, here I will get suggestion from different member with different knowledge.
What Is The Connection Between These Three Things?
When I was Googling, I found relation in these three things. Backup required rooted device like Titanium backup and other famous. Now, Update also require rooted device (Although I am not sure about this). Some rooting apps require android version above 4.0 but for this I have to update and for update I should backup and for this, it requires rooted device, as I have said above. Please! help me.
1. Use cwm to backup your device.
2. We don't have real 4.x
3. You can go deeper into the system after rooting and use root apps.
you can take backup of your system by clockworkmod recovery it takes backup of whole phone (system+apps)..if you want backup of your apps then there are many apps available on market for it..best one so far is titanium backup..
we currently have 2.3.6 version..don't expect official ics or jb update..i think we wont even get 2.3.7...anyway you can get ics or jb ui by any custom rom!!!!
rooting will help you run your phone at full potential with some tweaks and mods..
some apps works only on rooted devices such as titanium backup..
and from now on post in right section
Hi All,
I am on 4.1.2 Official Jellybean for INDIA! (XWLST). Now i would like to root my mobile.
How can I root my mobile now?
Is that rooting process helps to flash custom roms like slimbean etc?
In case i need to flash a new room to which ICS version i need to start from?
Thanks in Advance.
Regards,
Natti
Search. This device was released 2.5 yrs ago & these questions have been asked/answered here thousands of times before (and is the reason we have stickied threads in both Q&A and General).
1. Really?! After 2-3 years and people still ask this question...
There are over hundreds of thousands root methods and the majority of them are here on xda. You can't really expect us to help you find a thread when they're just a Google or a Search away.
2. The root process will NOT give you a custom ROM. It will only give you (depends on which root method you use) generally Superuser, Busybox and a custom recovery (<-- this depends also on which root method you use)
To get slimbean rom (after rooting) you will have to navigate yourself to their thread, read the OP (carefully!) and then flash their ROM. Same goes with every ROM available for S2.
3. If you want to go back to samsung official ICS rom, you will have to get the file from sammobile.com and then flash with odin.
Protip - Before flashing a firmware, make sure that they are compatible with your device. The Galaxy S2 has alot of sub-variants.. whose firmwares may or may not be compatible with your device.
Good luck!
Hey guys
First of all, iphone was the first smartphone i've ever used
but for some reasons i had to use another smart phone >> Galaxy s3 GT-i9300 (Android version 4.3)
but i have a huge lag in opening and closing applications ,something like overloading the rams
i've tried Factory reset but the problem begins again after i dowload 5 apps
after search found someone like making custom software of android
ROM-Cyngon i don't even understand this thing
but some ppl say you have to pick the most suitable rom for your device to be much faster than brand new
so if anyone can help me with this problem would be appreciated
Sorry for my bad English
Thanks in advance
@Madoxv:
1. The easy way without installing anything: in settings ..apps ..all you can freeze apps, you don't use. Delete their data, too. Use xda-search-function to get a list of freezable apps.
2. More effective is to root your phone and flash a lite ROM. But before you do this, read. Otherwise you probably make a brick. Search-function again:
'How to root S3' and 'How to flash ROM S3'.
If you want full support for camera, wifi and sensors, use a ROM, based on firmware (Touchwiz). CyanogenMod or AOSP-ROMs don't.
