Sorry if the title is ambiguous. This is what I am considering.
Scenario:
I have a router at home that is password protected. I frequently have guests coming over and sometimes, they need to have access to the Internet. My current situation/setup will result in me having to provide them my router password. The connection settings are then permanently saved on the guests' devices.
Desired Scenario:
I wish to use my Android phone (preferably Android 2.3.3) as an in-between. I would like the guests' devices to connect to my Android phone while the Android phone connects to the router.
As such, the guests' devices will only see the Android phone acting as a router.
Doing so will allow me to maintain the password of my router as a secret, while giving me more flexibility in deciding what each device (perhaps by MAC address?) can do.
Question:
Is this even possible?
If so, could someone point me in the right direction?

I had no idea...foxfi and pdanet...
if it's not too much trouble, is there a free version that is not too much hassle? A quick search reveals that both foxfi and pdanet requires a restart from time to time for the free version.

Hi! Sorry for reviving a relatively dead thread.
I ran into a bit of a problem.
Most of the apps assume that I have a mobile data connection.
My phone does not have a mobile data connection and so it is unable to tether.
What I would like is for my phone to connect to my home router while accepting incoming connections from other devices (phones, laptops, etc).
Basically I want it to be acting as an intermediate router, as shown by the simple diagram below.
Router <-------> Phone <--------> Other devices
<-------------> is Wifi connection.
Hope it's not impossible.

Has anyone successfully made a VPN connection with their rezound? I am trying to connect to a VPN connection known to be working and it says its connected, but I am unable to get internet traffic to go through. (I.e. when I am connected to the VPN, Any app that uses data is unable to find a connection to the internet.) I know it's not on the VPN server side because I am able to connect and get data with another phone.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

There is a ton of good info in these forums and I'm patiently waiting for s-off just like the average member, but the issue of the vpn hasn't even been looked into by anyone else? I guess my question to any mods would be "what do I have to do to get some attention to an issue I'm having? "

Why would you need to use a VPN on a phone lol? If you're using free wireless tethering I really doubt that it'll mask it for you. Verizon would be like zomg in Russia wireless tethering steals you!

First of all, thank you both so much for the replies.
I'm not sure that I follow that last sentence, but but to answer the first question.... I want to use the vpn to encrypt my data. I don't use tethering that often, so I don't want to pay for the hotspot fee..... And I don't want to risk Verizon messing with or possibly closing my account or charging me a fee.... So I'd like to run my tethering data though my personal vpn.
I am able to use the stock VPN to connect to my networks. I have about 25 different VPN connections and my VPN connections are the L2TP/IPSEC PSK type. I can mount shares, as well as using remote control programs.
I would look at the logs of the device that you are trying to connect to, maybe that might give you some hints as to the issue. One thing I did find it that my device does not see the DNS server for some reason (even though it is specified), so therefore I have to use IP addresses to connect to anything.
This probably doesn't help you too much, but I did want to reply to let you know that I have the stock VPN working.

Wow! Thank you! It's so good to know that someone has a version of the stock vpn working. Mine are the PPTP type. I wonder if this phone has issues with that setup. Could you possibly test a PPTP connection?
Sorry, I'd love to be able to help you test but all of the device's that I connect to use only the L2TP/IPSEC PSK VPN. Good luck solving your problem and have a happy holiday!
Well I just wanted to update this thread. It looks like PPTP VPN is broken in stock android and therefore it's not specific to the rezound. It looks like it can be fixed by developers (and from what I've read) it's pretty common for it to be fixed in non-stock roms. The lack of internet/browsing is caused by a bug in the MPPE (Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption) implementation. The following article explains it pretty well:

IPsec connections are not affected....and it looks like MPPE connections have been fixed in ICS. Very interesting! Thank you! Have you used the PPTP or L2TP version? Was this just to setup the vpn server and then you connect to it with the stock vpn client?

I'm having the same issues as you are. I know I'm replying a month late, but I didn't get my phone setup until almost Dec 30th and have been fighting my corp VPN ever since.
Once in a while I can get ping to work from Better Android Terminal, but that is always short lived and I can never get anything to work from other apps.
I'm glad you found the issue. I took a look at logcat and it is definitely a kernel issue. When the connection starts, I get the message "couldn't set tty to ppp discipline".
I am having difficulty trying to use my iPhone as a hotspot. The WiFi analyser will see a strong signal but it does not show up in the settings WiFi even if I scan for it.
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing since WiFi Analyser can see a strong signal. Any suggestions ?

Search for "ad hoc" in this forum and you will find your answer. I rooted my prime and did the necessary modification to be able to connect to ad hoc wifi hotspots. Be extremely careful though if you go this route bc I bricked my 1st prime bc I made a noob mistake. I also made a thread about how I bricked it. Do some searching and you'll find your answers.
I am replying to this post from my hotel room tethered to work issued iPhone4. No need to root to do this. Tethering with the iPhone works with both bluetooth and wifi. With wifi i have had to do a soft reset on the phone a few times to get the prime to see it. Since the prime could see other aps i figured it was the phone. It has also disconnected from the phone a few times but the iPhone would think it was still connected. A quick off and back on of the iPhones tethering and all is well. I do wish bluetooth tethering would auto connect as it seems to be more battery friendly for day long meetongs where there is no wifi.

I'm using MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone 3gs. The signal appears strong on the WiFi analyser in the Prime but nowhere on the WiFi settings. Wish I could select the WiFi network from the WiFi Analyser program.

I read about ad-hoc networks and it explains how androids are set to ignore them. I will do a little more research before I try any patches.

Just thinking about this for a while and I can't see why Android throws up a road block on Ad-Hoc tethering if not at least an option. Apple I came to expect draconian restrictions but not Android.
I'm rooted and my iPhone jailbroken but the Ad-Hoc patch makes me nervous. I need this feature.

If you follow the directions, it works fine.
This gets rid of the AD hoc barrier, then you need some app to tether the phone to the Prime....Since I don't have an Iphone, I can't recommend one.

I'd been meaning to do that, and I just got around to it a few minutes ago. Took all of 3 minutes. Works great with wifi-tether.

I had not noticed the red 'Ad-Hoc' label on the WiFi Analyser which will tip you off whether the Prime will see the WiFi signal.
Downloaded ES File Explorer (free) added the root directory in settings and followed the procedure. It is very straight forward and worked. The WiFi Analyser did not show the 'Ad-Hoc' label and the Prime hooked on perfectly.
Thanks everybody - tethering off my phone is important as even if I had the option to add a SIMM card - I much prefer paying one data plan for the phone and tablet than two different ones.
Now I had tethering prior to ICS - why did they start the 'Ad-Hoc' discrimination with ICS ? Why limit functionality in an upgrade rather than expand it ?
I'm going to start here with this question before expanding it to the whole xda-developers Q&A area, since this is something I am trying to do specifically with my Note.
Is there a way to force an app to use mobile data connection (MDC) instead of wifi?
Specifically, I am trying to figure out if I can force Activesync and/or the Gmail app to use the MDC instead of the wifi connection when I am already connected on wifi, especially if there is a way to have either of those apps detect that it can't communicate with the servers through wifi, and auto change to using the MDC.
Reason for this??? I need to receive emails through Activesync and Gmail at all times, due to being on-call for work. The wifi connection screws up sometimes, but the phone stays connected to the wifi thinking it can still access everything ok. (yes, it is a problem with the router, not the phone, and that is being investigated separately)
Yes...I know I could just turn off my wifi connection on the phone, but I prefer to leave it on if possible, and just use the MDC for those two apps. Is that even possible to use the MDC while still connected to wifi, or is there a requirement that wifi be turned off to use MDC, no matter what???
Also, what is the proper name for the MDC? That might help me search for a solution. MDC was the best I could come up with for it, but maybe there is an "official" name for this connection?
I have the Tasker app installed, and have been thinking about trying a way to make Tasker cycle the wifi connection for me, but as I said, I would prefer to just leave the wifi turned on, and just force those two apps out the MDC.
Any help, or maybe just point me to some more info? I have search for about a week now, and am finding plenty of people asking how to restrict an app to use wifi, but not the other way around.

Think of it this way...the wifi issue may be firewall related. So, the firewall stops my phone data from going to the internet through wifi. I need to still get my emails though. I would like to stay connected to my wifi, so that I could tell that I am having problem as soon as I try to surf the web, but my emails would still be coming through because they are using the mobile data connection instead.
I've never seen a mobile data connection stay active while wifi was turned on and connected.
Your best bet is to either fix whatever is wrong with your wifi connection, or bite the bullet and leave wifi off, until you can fix your wifi connection.

I dont think its impossible, as I believe txts come over data, not sure on this though. Is it possible to get what you want, yes most likely. Is it going to be easy, probably not. Address the real problem rather then applying an over complicated bandaid.
If your staying connected, but losing data at home then it is likely your modem is the culprit (assuming you use a modem connected to a wireless router, not a all in one device). If it belongs to the cable/phone company then contact them. If you bought your modem, find out what is compatable and buy a new one and see if this fixes it. I had the exact same problem with Time Warner the dumb asses tried telling me it was my wireless router problem despite still being about to be 100% up and running on internal (streaming music and movies from plex server while on phone and even able to RDP internally). Eventually they agreed to send a tech out and he laughed at them and gave me an upgraded modem and we were good to go.
Thanks for the support, but as I said, the wifi issue is being addresses separately. It may not be a quick & easy fix, because additional "testing" is being done on the network (firewall) that may be the real cause of the issue. It is being looked into though.
So...for everyone trying to get me to just "fix" the wifi first, sorry, but it isn't going to happen right now. I would just like to find a way to do what I requested in the original message.

I agree that it seems only one connection can be active at a time. On my windows mobile phone it defaulted to the data connection, android seems to default to wifi (i would bet this is a requirement from the carriers).
As for texts, they are delivered through spare bits on the cellular carrier channel that were left as spares very early on. Not via data channels. Which is why forcing us to pay to send texts is such robbery - we are literally using otherwise spare bandwidth.
How to bypass MDC?
I have a similar need as MonkeyThumper. My situation is that I have a camera application which allows me to view my camera's at home. It uses port 2000 of which our corporate firewall blocks. I have to turn off wi-fi so that I can use mobile in order to connect. Wondering if there is some routing protocol that I can tell my phone to use MDC instead of wi-fi specifically for that application. It's a nuissance to have to turn off wi-fi, check the camera's, then turn it back on regularly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Apps = Not Likely. HOWEVER.... and I can't say for sure - mainly because I have no idea if the radios shut down based upon connection (example 3G turns off when on wifi) - but you can modify the routes in the route table and (again in theory) force data down one pathway or the other.
For example - using a terminal on the phone try this: Connect Wifi - then in the terminal type: ip route show
Output will be something like
default via 192.168.1.1 dev wlan0
....
192.168.1.1 dev wlan0 scope link

So, you should be able to manipulate the route table with something like:
su
ip route add 88.77.66.55/32 via 10.77.xx dev rmnet_sdio0 (where 88.77.66.55 is your home IP address or the IP you want to get to).
The problem with this is... it's not persistent. So you'll be best off doing this from a script or something once you verify it works.
There might be another way too... I'm sure there's a route file somewhere that can be configured.

Need GMAIL on Mobile Data, others on WiFi
hi, my case is simple:
At work, we have WiFi.
But, GMAIL is blocked.
So, i want all my other apps to use the office WiFi, but gmail to go over my mobile data.
I would imagine this scenario is getting more and more common.
Does anyone have any ideas here, apart from having to turn wifi off everytime i want to check my gmail?

HOW have you not heard of android wifi tether? One of the first reasons I had for rooting the first Android phone I got.
There's also Barnacle Tether, available on the play store.
Guess Barnacle is gone... but there are other tethering apps on the play store though.
And I'm wrong again. Barnacle is still there, but doesn't show up when I search from my phone. How curious.
Since your phone is rooted you can download wireless tether.
Google it and you will easily find the download link or even directly via the play store.

I appreciate the reply, but if you read my post again the issue I'm having is not an app to enable wifi tether directly on the handset, it's that the packet data is being detected as not from the phone so I get a message, on the computer, in the internet browser saying my priceplan doesn't include tethering. I cant get around this 3 website redirect. So, I need a way to tether, without the network knowing... The apps you mention work when the block is at the phone level I believe.... This is something different Three is doing..
Please correct me if I'm wrong though...
Oh, and as for the apps not showing up, the mobile phone providers asked google to block these apps for certain customers.. if you connect to a wifi network when in flight mode, and go the google market, you should still be able to see them...

I WAS on wifi.
And did you ACTUALLY download the tether app and try, or were you using the tether built into the settings of Android? Because it sure doesn't sound like you downloaded the app...
And I don't have tethering on my carrier plan, but the tether app works just fine for me.

Initially when I first posted I was trying the built in app but I downloaded the app you suggested anyway, but it didn't work. would connect to the computer but no data connection. Unsure if its an app problem or still a three problem, but I don't see how this app would fix the three problem. Does it somehow mask the PC data connection??? I couldn't see anything in the settings or set up that suggest that it would, it just looks like a more feature rich wifi hotspot app?? In addition I found mention that that others with my issue have also tried these apps like barnacle and it didn;t resolve the problem....

They can suspend your service if they discover you are doing tethering on your device if you are not alowed in your current plan.
I Hope you wont have any issues.
Otherwise it is possible that the sim card lock the feature even on rooted phone when detect thetering or it is impossible ?

yes I suppose they could do, but like I say I'm resolving this with my contract. It's more that I'm curious how they are doing it, and on principle don't like being told what I can and can't do

I just tried tethering a Macbook, and amazingly that worked!.. SO, It must be something to do with the Packet Headers I'm guessing.. Or they are doing some other more detailed packet sniffing... It means there is definitely a software route around it... Need a clever developer to read this thread

That doesn't make any sense. If it works with a mac book, it should work with your windows machine too. Unless your windows machine has some kind of proxy?

no proxy.. I'm as confused as you. The headers are different on a mac though, Unix based system... Need to know how 3 detect at a network level its not phone data... this difference with a mac must be a clue...
pda net 3.50. Had to install pc software.. Is a USB tether solution.. but it works, so will do, until I get my price plan sorted.... Still would like a more elegant wifi solution though.. Come on you clever devs, .... SCRATCH that :-(((( It worked for 5 mins, now it comes up with same message in the internet Browser.. damn it!!! three are too smart :-(

They are blocking the port 80.. they sent you to their walled garden page. I think its on your provider proxy side now

Is there a way around this. What do you mean by, on the provider proxy side?
Shortly after PDA net stopped working, I was also getting the three message on the browser directly on my phone.. after about an hour, my phone web browser started working normall again :-(

When you use thetering, you embark to the provider internet network.
for example my provider is Bell Canada and their proxy is web.wireless.bell.ca
this one is for the device internet
for the thetering one they use another configuration settings when i connect my device to the computer.
What happen is when you plug your device to the computer, a signal is sent to the provider stating you entered in thetering mode. You don't have access to thetering so your internet connection is limited to the walled garden of the provider stating you are not subscrided to the service. Thats why i think they blocked the port 80 on your device and redirect you to that page.
Now for the Macintosh story.. It is not impossible that you can connect without problem with a mac and safari. I know a lot of people emulating a handled device with the Mac and the safari browser and those peeps didnt had a thetering plan.
The differences came with the drivers installed. Mac OS one are quite different in term of functionality than windows, thats why maybe the provider is able to sniff more easily people using windows but i am not a senior programmer. This sounds correct to me. I'm pretty annoyed though. Only had the contract a month, I was told I could move onto a more expensive plan within contract if I needed more allowance etc.. Phone up 3, not only do they not let you PAY MORE for a different plan, but they also don't let anyone shift onto the one plan ever, unless its a new contract.. So basically **** them... so even if I want to pay extra for tethering I can't... absolute nonsense...
I had the same issue with three. I downloaded masqued crusader from play store. Activated it and then started wireless/usb tether. It worked. That was a while back tho. On a payg sim card on a galaxy s on gb. Its worth a try though.

not everyone has a loptop or a wifi adapter in their pc, there are people who just have a desktop pc with no wifi

Fair enough.....but really, a laptop with no wifi, how old does that have to be....if you have a smart phone, i would really expect people to have wifi at home/work/etc..

For starters I don't own a laptop because I don't need one(for designing,gaming laptops are not powerful enough and powerful enough ones cost too much),but I got a good desktop pc.And here most doesn't have wifi cos non of isp's are providing good wifi service,hsdpa & adsl is more popular in my country.So I don't have a router with wifi support.
This app is more suited for people with those conditions mate
Tho I find 5$ for this app is little over prized

Free version is kinda pain in the a$s to use,author only allowed it to be used it after 11pm to 2am or something similar to that time frame :/

Which is why I have just given up on trying to get ot to work!!!
But there shoul dbe an easy way to change the tim eon phone and pc to get round that.
I am definatley not paying for an app that I cant get to work in the trial version and I am not staying up half the night to check it....back to the unistall bin for me and continue using virtual router

well, if you have wifi on the computer then the link i provided to virual router is the perfect solution to this problem. (and free and no resrictions)
For those that explained to me that this app is useful for those without wifi on their computer, can you think of another way other than usb cable to connect the phone to the computer.
(Bluetooth is the only thing that springs to mind, but that is so awful i would rafther be tied to the computer with a usb cable than deal with crappy bluetooth)

For one, it is an excellent way to download large game's data or other large files as it is far more reliable and faster way than using wifi.
So please stop being such shortsighted by telling people here what's good or bad for them just because you can't seems to see what can be done by using this app.
