I bought xperia from a mate for around 15 bucks since it doesn't have instagram so I did some research and heard rooting it would help. So i have recently rooted my xperia and now im wondering how do i install a newer OS of android for my rooted phone so it can run instagram? I have good experience from computers but never been into smartphones before so i am kinda confused by all the formats and stuff. Thanks in advance

The best ROMs (the common word for customized/unofficial android OS) you get after unlocking your bootloader and 'flashing' a custom kernel. Minicm7 (android 2.3.7 Gingerbread/GB, you probably have 2.1.1 Eclair installed) is probably the most popular ROM. The process of unlocking is slightly risky (your phone may use the mobile network ability if you do something wrong), but absolutely worth it.
If you prefer not to take risks, there are some GB ROMs for the 'stock'' (preinstalled) kernel on your phone, for which you have to install xrecovery.
Here is a Link with a bunch of tutorials and download links to awnser your questions:

Ok first off, sorry for this post. I know theres problably a guide somewhere on the site on how to do this but everything ive found on the site so far is too difficult or muddled up for me to understand, im probably the biggest noob ever to come on here lol. Even if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
So anyway i have a SE mini xperia pro and i would love to install a custom ROM on it as i have been lead to believe it can increase performance and battery life. Another main reason i want to do this is so i can install App2Sd so i can store my apps on my 8gb memory card instead of the 120mb internal memory- hopefully that helps my phones performance also.
Model no. - U20i
Firmware Version - 2.1- Update1
Baseband Version - M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-5340415
Kernel Version - 2.6.29
Build Number - 2.1.A.0.6
Yesterday after hours of watching youtube videos and reading endless forums on this site, i finally rooted my phone and installed xrecovery on it. As far as i know, xrecovery is what is needed to install ROMs on an android phone, so i think im going in the right direction ?
I have a few questions which i would greatly appreciate if they could be answered by one of you smart people My first question is: Will installing a custom ROM increase my phone's battery life and performance? 2nd: What is best (most stable and fastest) ROM i could install for my particular model of the mini pro? and thirdly: Is it possible for someone to provide me with step by step instructions on how to do this? or even give me a link with instructions?
Ive spend hours and hours attempting and failing at this, if someone could help it would be hugely appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Tobe Honest the stock ROM is the best as of now its perfectly balanced
for performace & stablity, but if want you could install HYBROM v4.

1.Unlock ur Bootloader, find some guide in the development forum
2.Maybe u need to flash a kernel that have a FULLY working CWM rec(need fastboot)
3.Install ur cusROM via cwm,dont forget to full wipe,do a backup 1st
IMO stock rom is the best right now, other rom are just like stock rom with some app removed drom it,plus it has a diff framework(maybe)

Are you talking of the SE xperia mini pro or the xperia x10 mini pro? If its the xperia mini pro sk17i then app2sd should work fine. If its the x10 mini pro, then sorry bro, but this is not the right section for your question (but you could use the rom 'Froyobread' for x10 mini pro. Its very stable and works on stock kernel, without unlocking bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190037 )
You may wish to read through the FAQ in X10 Mini/Pro forums, try wiping out some bloatware for a week or two before going on flashing custom ROMs.
first off, this is not xperia x10 mini pro u20i forum,
you just need to root and install CWM to install custom rom on that device, no need for unlocking bootloader
That's true, u20 isn't Xperia Mini Pro. You're talking about X10 mini pro. I had that phone, and it was easy to flash a custom rom: just install jdk on windows, download the flashtool, root it, install recovery and flash roms. It's not very difficult, really
OMFG i didnt read its u20 ==
Hi all,
So I just picked up a Xperia Mini Pro today... pretty solid looking phone, performance is "average" w/ the stock ROM. This is my first Sony android, but I've rooted and flashed CM7 on many HTC and Samsung devices (i run a G2 and SGS myself)
Anyway, after spending the whole week reading up on this phone in XDA, i realize that there's one question that I can't seem to find any good info on.
Basically, I'm never gonna use this phone on stock ROM (that's just silly) and I'm gonna flash to CM7 like my other phones
I'm a bit confused as to which method is the more "proper" way.
What's the recommendation of anyone who has the SK17i/a?
do I use the FlashTool method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10879507#post10879507)
or do I use the method provided in the wiki from the cyanogenmod site? (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Xperia_Mini_Pro:_Full_Update_Guide)
The only important steps are really: rooting, unlocked BL and install CMW ... flashing CM7 is prob the easiest step of all
I'm comfortable doing either way, both instructions seem pretty straight forward and clear-cut ....but i just wanted to know which one I should be using to make this process a bit smoother for me
I just bought this phone yesterday and love it, but it does seem to be crammed with too much rubbish. this is my first android phone. I've rooted it, but still trying to decide whether to flash to CM7 (i've had iphones before and i'm guessing CM7 is the android version of Custom Firmware) Are there any step by step guides for THIS phone on flashing to CM7 as i'm still learning about android handsets.
hi.. i am also new to SE Xperia Mini.. and i am a former Samsung Galaxy 5 user.. i used to have a a CM7 in my galaxy 5.. and flashing on a samsung phone was easy..
i'm would also want to see a step by step guide on flashing.. thanks..
so, it didn't take long for me to realize that CM7 just doesn't work that great for this particular phone
... Feel free to read up on the known issues (ie: no hardware keyboard support)
Anyhoo...I updated my firmware and flashes hybrom v8...great looking ROM
"there is no spoon"
Hello all!
I'm considering buying the SE Live Walkman phone, but just wondered if there are many custom ROMS available for it yet?
I have had a search but have only found threads based on rooting, and I noticed there isnt really a dedicated forum for it...
I am currently using Xperia X8 which came with 2.1 (stock), but I'm now running an almost perfect 2.3.7 ROM 'GingerDX' (Thanks to the MASTER Developer Doixanh)
It may sound funny but I will only get this phone if I can unlock/root/hack and flash the hell out of it. If no one is really focused on developing for this phone then I'll probably give it a miss.
Any respone would be greatful. Thanks

Custom rom for this device is under development

I have wt19 i have not rooted it or not done anything new in it. Since i am new to android might be i am afraid. But since ur main dedication is towards the rooting and custom rom. U can easily do that on SE devices since SE is itself supporting the open source world. There is boot unlocking method on there official site.
Also i think the CM has also been realsed for the wt19.

I was slightly weary about rooting and stuff at first but now I have a rooted X8 with custom kernel and it was surprisingly easy and haven't had anything go wrong.(maybe a few scares but nothing that couldn't be fixed) but now I'm looking for a cheap android with better processor plus I seen that the Live maybe also getting an official ICS update which is cool.
I think I will get this phone sometime soon.
thanks for replies

My xperia X10a has slowed down tremendously and giving lots of trouble for the last few months and I wish to re-install the android 2.3.
I had rooted the phone myself after reading threads here. I have also read here that the stock version isn't really that good so I was thinking of re-installing the sony version.
1. Would Sony allow re-installing android on a rooted phone?
2. If Yes, would I have to root the phone again after installation to remove the Sony crapware? (That would be a max pain as it took hrs the first time to figure out and I didn't make any notes)
Yes and yes.

Good morning guys. I've recently bought a xperia mini second handed while I'm waiting for my gnex back from assistance. Well, these are the facts:
I'm not new in the Android world, so first of all I've searched for a guide to root and unlock my bootloader. My original build version was the 2.1.1.A.0.0 and I had several problems in rooting it. Flashtools didn't recognize my phone even in flash mode, and sony update service nor pc companion find me any update. So I paid 2 useless euros to wotan, hoping that changing the build would be useful for updating (on their server last version available was the 4.1.B.0.587, so ICS). Of course not update was found except for one thing, the program installed me the 2.1.1.C.0.0 build. With it I was able to make flashtools works. I rooted it with no problem and I've discovered that the bootloader cannot be unlock on my phone. Said so, I've reader that there are many ROMs that works even with locked bl, so I've installed the x recovery (cause the cwm caused me a soft brick twice) and I went for flashing a ICS based ROM from there. Unfortunately, again a bootloop. I had to restore the OFW using sony update server (2.1.1.C.0.0) and I'm currently on it. Is that possible that there isn't a way to see ICS on these little Android?
Thanks in advance.
I think you have Xpria X10 Mini
So it isn't good forum for you and in X10 mini you can only use ICS as Custom ROM
For example miniCM9

I don't really know the difference. From where can I see it?
And in the case it's the one you said, how can I put a custom ROM based on ICS? As you can read I've tried everything..
That's why go to x10 mini pro forum,I am ex x10 mini pro user,so you should go to there

Hmmm...if you don't found anything there then what make you think you will find something for your phone here? you are on the wrong Xperia lineup to ask this question....
you have to look carefully at HERE...if you lazy to go thru every pages then just read the first stikies thread...that can narrow down your search for finding the right Roms for your phone...remember your biggest problem is your locked bootloader cause there only a few Roms for locked bootloader...
