[Q] Phone app contact list opens separate contacts app - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This seems to be an issue with TouchWiz specifically, I've flashed AOSP roms and the phone app's contact list shows the appropriate list without opening a separate app.
I've tried to find other answers to this issue, but nothing was found that could really answer my question.
I understand this is an issue with the horrid TouchWiz UI, I'm perfectly comfortable making changes to apks or roms as needed, but there are some elements of TouchWiz that I'd like to run without this annoyance.
The phone app, when going to the contact list within that app will open the contacts app instead of displaying a list of contact pulled from the contact database.
In 4.1+ AOSP, the contact list does not open a separate app.
My question:
Would it be feasible to replace the stock TouchWiz phone.apk with an AOSP phone.apk and have it work properly or is there a functioning TouchWiz phone.apk that doesn't open a separate contacts app to just scroll through a list?
It's not easy to exactly describe what it is doing - but I know when I exit the phone app, my recent apps list shows both phone and contacts opened, while an AOSP rom only shows phone. The people app doesn't have to be opened separately for the phone to scroll through contacts.
Thanks for your help.

App Similar to Sense UI??

Ok, so I can't seem to find anything on this. I had Sense UI on my old phone and I really liked how everything was consolidated within contacts. When you selected "contacts", you'd see their name and whatever their FB status was. Then when you'd click a specific contact, you'd have tabs for each communication method. You could easily click on call history, SMS history, emails, etc.
I can't seem to find anything like that for the Streak in an app format. There has to be something like that.
Is PhoneBook 2.0 something like what you are looking for http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.voxmobili.phonebook2
Close. Better than the stock contact app. No email grouping and you have to link one profile at a time to FB.
Like I said, better than stock, so I'll use that for a while. Thanks!
I think you'll struggle to find a home replacement with all the features of SenseUI.
Sense isn't just an .apk, it replies heavily on HTC's framework.
When Dell get off their arse and release the Kernel, we should be able to port over Sense to the streak
WHEN ???????????

Click to collapse
I don't necessarily want a home replacement, just a better contacts/email/sms/info organizer. The link above is close. Another drawback I found, when you put a contact shortcut on the home screen, it opens the stock contacts and not the Phonebook app.
The contact app from 2.1 is much better, either wait for the upgrade or flash the leaked beta,
To direct dial a contact with a shortcut go to add /shortcut/direct dial
The icon will direct dial the number you choose.
No, I know how to do that. I mean, when I put the contact on the desktop (whatever you call it for Android ) it opens the contact in the stock contact manager, not PhoneBook 2.0 manager. When I use Handcent, I defaulted that as the SMS client, so now when I start a new SMS, Handcent pops up. I don't get that option with Phonebook, for some reason.

Gmail app & SMS input questions

Hi everyone, used to have a wildfire running CM7 so I have two questions someone maybe able to help with:
1) On the stock gmail app, I don't seem to get automatic nofitcations. It seesm like only manually refreshing inside the app will get it to look for new messgaes. I've turned off auto-sync, but I assumed that it would obey it's ruels of syncing every 30 mins, doesn't seem to look for new mail by itself.
2) When writing text (SMS) messages, my old android phone used to suggest full stops, question marks, commas, etc. after pressing space after a word. It used to automatically capatilize words after full stops, amongst other features. Now all those features are gone. Any ideas?
I'm running sensation ROM, can anyone confirm these features work properely on the stock rom, or suggest any soultions?
The built in GMail app doesn't have that feature. Use the Stock Email app for that.
And what is that Auto Suggestion feature are you talking about in SMS? I'd really like to have something like that.
Regards.

I'm pretty sure the SMS auto suggestion is a feature of android 2.3? So it should be found on pretty much any stock rom (unless it was part of CM7). Also, that's a shame about the gmail app, i guess I'll use the stock e-mail app instead.
Or the K9/Kaiten/Mail Droid/Enhanced Email, how many shall I mention? I don't like any of them anyway
I'm starting to think the word/punctuation suggestions in the messaging app were custom to CM7... I've tried three different roms, and none have had this feature.

[Q] Help!! Messaging problem

I have a rooted SGS2 running Siyah 2.3 and Touch X-Power, with LauncherPro. I have the stock messaging app. When I receive texts from certain people in my contacts list, I get a notification but when I open the text to read it, I'm taken straight to the message create screen and can't read the text. No matter which way I try to enter the messaging app, I can't open the text or any previous ones that I've received from them.
This also happens if I have Handscent running, the message is accepted by the stock app but not Handscent... It's driving me mad.
Any ideas? Can I remove the stock app so that it isn't there at all and use something else like Handscent as the default?
If the app doesn't force close then it sounds like its a problem with either what you are doing or something other than the app.
But yea, you can remove the app and just use handcent if you really want to. Get Root Explorer from the market if you haven't already (its like £2 or something). Then navigate to system > apps > you will see a whole bunch of apks. Find MMS.apk and delete it.
Hope that helps.
Did you mess around with the settings?

[Q] Stock contacts and SMS apps - configuration problems

I moved from Samsung Galaxy S2 to S3 with a later Android version (4.3), and there are just a couple of things that are driving me crazy as far as the stock contacts and sms apps are concerned.
Before I decide to move to other apps (which I don't really want to do as I've been pretty glad about the stock apps so far):
How to change the generic picture for contacts?
I liked the earlier format with simple silhouettes in different colours and I totally hate the new creepy-looking faces with a smile, eyes, nose etc. (sorry, I am not allowed to post outside links yet, which is why I had to remove all the sample links from this question and the following ones, which may make my questions a little more difficult to understand).
How to remove the contact pictures besides the text messages?
Before, the text messages were displayed with text bubbles only.
Now there are little annoying contact pictures next to the messages. I've found a couple of threads about it on the Internet but no real solutions, unfortunately.
And this one has been bugging me since Galaxy S2:
How to hide all those contacts that include no phone number (i.e. those imported from my Google account)?
I am able to hide the contact in the normal view (if I simply scroll down the list, only phone contacts are displayed) but whenever I use the in-app search option, the e-mail contacts appear, too, which is pretty annoying (I use the search to find someone I want to call, not if I want to write an e-mail).
Anyone, anything? I know these aren't exactly the most interesting or serious problems, and they're rather Android- than phone-related... but I've spent a lot of time researching this and I've found no solution whatsoever (besides using other apps).

Hi! Changing default generic picture is not possible without root at least(i think it might be best to use a custom rom maybe), removing the picture next to each sms is linked with the contact list so you should try other sms apps from playstore for that and hiding contact with no number in contact list is impossible - try to make a group with the ones that have number and one group with the ones that don't have numbers or remove the email only contact from google contact list(on gmail). Hope i gave you some directions Cheers!

Decent Dialer One Alternative?

I've been a big fan of Dialer One for a while now and have used it as my Phone app even since the developers stopped working on it and released 2GIS Dialer.
I much prefer the look and feel of Dialer One and all the options but have been having and issue that as Dialer One is my default phone app, I'm saving my contacts here and if a contact has what's app, it seems to duplicate their entry and then if I try edit/delete the entry through Dialer One, it won't do it properly as you can't get rid of the duplicate with the what's app number. I then need to go to the "contacts" app, where all the entries appear fine and make changes here. So it appears dialer one is the problem actually, but I'm wondering is there a way to solve this without getting rid of Dialer One, or all my saved preferences.
Of course, the best solution would be to find a better alternative that is up to date, supported and with the same functionality Dialer One had so if anyone has any suggestions, please share :fingers-crossed:
