Hi all. My colleague owns a Verizon Note 2 flashed to Visafone Nigeria, and he also uses it for his GSM networks sometimes when he is out of Visafone coverage area. The device has been working ok until recently. The mystery is that he cannot recollect what he was doing with it prior to the baseband snafu. As of now the device is a semi brick; it boots up normally, but no service... either CDMA or GSM. I looked at 'About Device' and it says Baseband Unknown. No hardware version also. I tried initially to reflash the device thinking it was bad network parameters. DIAG mode is ok, even gives me a COM port but DFS cannot read the device, neither can CDMAWS nor QPST; however, they all see the DIAG COM port but cannot read the device. I was baffled again when I tried the latest CASUAL Jailbreak and it worked fine. I unlocked, rooted and installed CWM recovery. Still DFS cannot read the device. I got a CWM flashable VRAJLB modem zip and flashed. CWM said it flashed ok, without errors, but still baseband unknown. I am at my wit's end right now. Any help please?

Done Odin at least ten times onvthus devices. It flashes stuff ok, but still same problem.
No service and unknown baseband. Even flashed VRALJB radio from Odin and CWM version too, still same same...
If this doesnt work, I would say you need to get a new phone.

Thanks for the suggestion but I've already tried this and the blasted baseband is still laughing at me and saying 'unknown'. I'm going to try shipping the phone to some shop in the US that says they can repair IMEI. Hopefully that will fix the baseband issue too.

Be careful doing that, you may never see the phone again. Just my opinion, keep googling and try to figure it out

Hello everyone...
I bricked my galaxy S2 HD LTE (SHV-E120L) when I wanted to flash the TeamLeader 1.3 ROM. I managed to have it unbricked, but now I have a modem problem.
The phone is stuck in flightmode, and impossible to disable it.
What do you think I should do now?
Thanks,
Mark
What did you do specifically that blocked it in the first place, aside from trying to install the rom, is that specific rom not compatible with the S2 HD LTE?
I would say reflash a STABLE rom or try flashing a MODEM and see what that does for you, unless you're not sure why it got bricked in the first instance, or you're confident enough that if anything went wrong you can bring it back again
Did you check for your imei number in settings?

Almost got a similar problem here...
phone got struck in flight mode or no mobile network is detected... i dialled in the dialer to make it show the IMEI no... it said IMEI:____________ well nothing
Info: i am on my stock ROM, not rooted nothing... 2.3.6
i uninstalled norton internet security, that's where this problem started... (it actually asked me whether i wanted to renew the norton software, since my 60 days license is got over...)
Thanks in advance!!

Thanks Wezi....
I got the EL bricked because I wanted to flash the TeamLeader ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468998) with Odin. In that process something must have gone wrong because I had an error. And then I made the capital mistake of rebooting the phone. Since then it was bricked.
Is the MODEM part of the TeamLeader ROM or where can I find an adequate modem to flash?
Also, I didn't make a backup of the original efs directory. Stupid, I know.

I didn't make a backup of the efs directory, so the original IMEI is lost I'm afraid.

First thing first, was it working before? Where did you buy it from. Carriers have start blocking phones that are reported stolen or have balance in the account.
What does it say in settings/about phone/status?
Does that number match the one on the back of the phone under the battery?
Could you please explain what you did to get to this point?
Flashed bad modem?
Deleted /efs folder or contents?
Remote unlock error?

I am not too sure.. i got the phone from a friend who has messed it up...
He said he flashed the bell upgrade from Gb to ICS and this happened.....
I doubt it .... anyhow... couple of other things
the function *#06# shows a null/nunll
*#9090# - shows nothing
*#2263# - shows nothing in service menu
Also, *2767*3855# system format doesnt work either....
Rom is working fine... wireless and internet are all functional....
If i go to adb... i can see the efs folder and other partitions...
Well yeah, the efs folder will be there, is just generated a new one, with a generic imei.
As i said earlier, mobiletechvidoes can fix it, but since everything is working perfectly, and you live in Canada, might wanna just not worry about it?
I read the ota Canada ics update had a bad install script. Just get the zip file and flash that.
too late for that, the "damage" has been done, and he is already running it, flashing the zip won't help now.

So any way i can revive the phone back to life?
Had this happen to me a few times on my sgs1.
Only thing that fixed it was flashing older stock rom through Odin. You can try samfirmware to get it or there is a complete set of stock files here in the forum as well.
Good luck.

I'm not sure if this would help at all but it might be worth a shot.It creates TEST IMEI's and other stuff through ADB .Maybe it can even retrieve your actual IMEI somehow? Post back in this thread if anything comes of it so other people with problems can follow .

Here's my fix
I had the same problem with IMEI showing null/null....this happened after I flashed new radio band to get 4g on Tmobile for my AT&T Galaxy note. It appears that I had flashed a zip file for new radio that messes up the IMEI number. I have heard that others have just simply re-flashed their Note using other custom roms that has it's own radio band and IMEI number reappears. I simply used Samsung Kies to force most current factory rom into my Note (search how to do that) and it added factory setting to my Note...including all the AT&T stuff but it did unroot my phone....but it fixed the problem and I got my IMEI back....PM me if you have any questions.
To get to download mode when hooked up to Kies: hold down volume down and power at the same time until download mode comes up. And push volume up button once download screen comes up. Hook the phone up to Samsung Kies and click "Tools" and click "Firmware upgrade and initialization".....enter model using caps "SGH-I717" and enter ok....and enter serial number...using caps....and sit tight and wait...

Hey guys, I'm in desperate need of some assistance here.
I have an international Galaxy S3 i9300, rooted and with CWM.
I flashed Criskelos XXDLH8 ROM yesterday, and I followed the instructions to the dot.
The flash seemed to be problem free.
However, once the phone booted and i was on the new ROM, i tried to make a call, but I kept getting an error message saying "not registered on network".
I instantly freaked out, and wiped my phone+cache, and flashed stock Samsung ICS (XAALE8) via Odin.
The phone booted normally into the stock ICS. But instead of seeing signal bars on the status bar, all I can see now is just a circle with a line through it . :crying:
I did some research on the net, and didn't really find anything to help me, which is why I'm here, seeking ANY help from you guys.
I'm freaked out guys! Any assistance would be SO appreciated! thank you!

look up apn for your area.
otherwise you can try flashing a different modem for your region or even try another region from here

My sim card works on my spare phone, so thats not the problem.. do u think it might be an issue with my sim card slot?
I mean, i didnt physically drop the phone or anything, this issue seems to have originated after flashing that custom ROM...
Thanks anyways for your suggestions mate, appreciate everything I really hope someone can help me out here, im kinda lost..Sigh

Are you sure the firmware is suitable for your model for your phone's factory? There are at least three regions of producing Galaxy S3 International version. Some final product made in Vietnam and Korea has a lot of problems and need to be changed to the board made in China due to software problem. You should try using the "Firmware Upgrade And Initialization" in the "Tools" in the Samsung KIES 2.5 because it will download the latest official firmware according to your model and serial number and it will wipe your phone at the same time.

It sounds very much like a locked phone that was unlocked in a suboptimal way
Unless you have the original EFS (on which you might try to do a cleaner unlock) you will be "condemned" to always need a patched modem.
The short story is that network locking is done in a protected/checksumed database in the EFS partition and some older unlocks were not even attempting to keep the database "clean" - they were forcing a flag there but since there was some other check at a later time you need a special "patch" in the GSM modem code - that is located in a different partition and might be a little different from one country/carrier to another. Unfortunately the modem is (usually) updated with major ROM updates, so you have now lost that patch - but you can take a look below for a fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601
The bottom line is that (unless you restore original EFS and do a very clean unlock) you will always have to re-apply the modem after you program a new full ROM!
Hey guys, I need help reviving my I9100. I had it rooted and running CM for over a year, always upgrading to the latest nightlies when out of a sudden it started to lose network connection. Now it doesn't get any connection at all, no matter what I do....
Here are a few things I have done (not necessarily in that order):
- searched the forums for similar posts - didn't find one that matches my exact problem
- restaured a few different backups from when everything was working with CWM
- flashed older versions of CM (all the way back to CM7) with CWM
- flashed the original factory ROM with Odin
- flashed a few different modems with CWM
- factory reset, data wipe, cache wipe, fix permissions, etc. with CWM
- used GetRIL to fix RIL (tried a few different ones with each different modem flashed)
- tried my SIM card in other phones and it works
- tried other working SIM cards in my phone and it doesn't work
Not sure what else I can try before assuming it's a hardware error....
Everything else works fine - WiFi, Bluetooth.... basically my phone is now an iPod lol...
TIA
If your SIM works in other phones than the SIM is not the problem.
If your phone doesn't work with other SIMs - that's you clue right there. Is your phone locked to a specific carrier? If so, try other SIMs from same carrier. If the phone is factory-unlocked and doesn't accept other SIMs - it's a hardware issue.
Edit: Please check if *#06# shows your iemi.

My phone is carrier locked but the other SIM I tried was from the same carrier, so it should have worked. I have the unlock code anyways, just never had the need to unlock it. If anyone thinks it might help with the diagnosis I can find another carrier's SIM to unlock the phone and try it out.

Yes it does.
If your SIM worked in other phones from same carrier, but no SIM works in your device, I sense a hardware fault.
Don't rush unlocking it if you plan to have your carrier to repair the phone. It might disable your warrenty or flag your device as "tampered with".
Again, if no SIM seems to work in the device and the iemi is NOT blacklisted (for some reason), it's a hardware fault.

My phone is not under warranty, which is the reason why I really need to try everything possible to fix it. Otherwise I'll have to buy a new one out of my own pocket...
Is there any chance a bad Modem and/or RIL combination might be the problem here? Would flashing through CWM instead of ADB (which I haven't tried yet) make a difference?
Alright, this is what I should do:
- Sim unlock your phone.
- Make sure you do a full wipe.
- Flash a stock rom.
If you still have no reception, then its probably a hardware fault.
Now you could do 2 things from here on. Either you use your phone for listening to music or you open up your phone. Inside your phone there is a white cable. This is your atenna cable, take it off and connect it again. Test your phone now with your simcard. If it still doesnt work, try reversing the cable. Try again if it doesnt work. Try this procedure a few times.
If it works you are lucky, if it doesnt work you have a serious problem.
Opening up your phone is really easy, just search Youtube for instructions.
Hardware issue? Easy now....no need to rush things out.
@OP where did you get the unlock code? From your carrier itself or third party?
You've tried a lot of modems, are you sure you don't wanna try 3 or 4 more?
When you look for a network, does it even see the available ones?

Sure! which ones do you suggest? And how should I do it right? I've always just flashed them with CWM and never had any problems. Initially I only flashed the files codeworkx made available to flash with CM, but once I got this problem and couldn't fix it I flashed a few different ones from here. Does it make a difference if I flash them with ADB instead? I haven't tried that...

No, doesn't find anything. It even feels like it is not even searching at all. I remember a few times before it would take forever to find all the networks (did it a few times when travelling)... but now it says "searching" for a few seconds and nothing - back to the "available networks" screen without giving me any results.
Sure sounds like a modem thing.
There's a thread filled with modems in the original android section, you could look there.
You've never been to jb leak's land?
It's a good international modem, might work. It's LS6 I think. Feel free to try the whole ROM, can't hurt right?
You can also flash them with odin.
Sent from the little guy
OK, here is something I don't get:
Downloaded the LS6 modem, flashed with CWM, wiped cache/dalvik, reboot. Still no signal. Then, just for curiosity, I opened GetRIL. It showed me a RIL mismatch:
RIL: XXLQ6
Baseband: XXLS6
So I click to download and install the correct RIL (couldn't hurt right?). After download/install I reboot, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot, and still no signal. But now, when I go to to System Settings >> About Phone my Baseband Version is "unknown".... not even GetRIL recognizes it anymore.
Flashed CM nightly again to get things back. Now I have my baseband back (XXLS6) but still no signal.
@gastonw -> I don't pay much attention to leaks since I have been using CM Nightlies. But I'm downloading the I9100XWLSD ROM from the Official Firmwares thread to flash with Odin... let's see what happens...
Edit: Instead of matching the RIL to the baseband I tried the opposite - flashed the XXLQ6 modem. Now GetRIL shows me a perfect match.... and still no signal.
Try stock to see if things fall back to place.
Once it's fixed you can cyanogen mod tha phuck outta the device
Now, I've suggested JB leak (lsj) because of the "International" tag, you are now downloading nordic, so that could cause trouble (I'm in Uruguay and it works just fine tho).

Tried the Nordic.... same thing
Downloading LSJ, but not holding my breath...
Sounds like an EFS folder problem to me.

Tried XXLSJ.... nothing.....
Any other ideas? :crying:
yeah, back up EFS folder and nuke your phone.
(Really, search for nuke script here at xda).
I still don't think this is hardware related.

Bro search EFS folder corruption. I wouldn't nuke anything yet incase a custom rom or kernel has automatically backed it up. Baseband unknown and imei number unknown all point to EFS problem.

Everything points to main PCB replacement
Or sell the device for parts.

Hopefully this is the right place for this! My apologies if not.
So, last night I decided to root my new S3 (i9300). I have rooted numerous phones previously including my old S3 (which I regrettably lost!) however im absolutely no expert in this kind of stuff.
I used Odin to flash CWM Touch, then made a backup, installed CWM SuperUser. Backed up the EFS using a tool I found on here.
Then went a head with putting a Rom on. Previously used the Ultima rom on my old s3 which worked great, just fancied trying something different so downloaded and flashed a Chaos rom.
Flashing it went okay, followed the instructions to a T.
Booted into the new rom fine but noticed it wouldn't connect to my mobile network (including 3G).
Decided to restore the backup figuring maybe something went wrong during the install. Got it back to how it was pre-Chaos however still no mobile network.
After reading up a bit, I thought maybe the EFS whatsimajig was corrupted during the flash. I read that a way to tell if this is right is your IMEI number won't be right. So I went and checked the phones Status and saw afew things that seemed a bit strange:
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile network state: Disconnected
My phone number: Unknown
ERI Version: Not available
IMEI: This displayed my correct IMEI
Finally, I restored the EFS backup I took but it still isn't working!
It also shows that I have signal, but everytime I try to make a phone call it says "Not registered on network"
Hope someone here may be able to help! If you need anymore info I'll provide as much as I can.
Cheers.
You got baseband installed? See if *#1234# says baseband is unknown.
If so flash one.

Im assuming I do. It doesn't say baseband unknown, instead gives me:
AP: i19300XXALF6
CP: i9300XXEMB6
CSC: i9300H3GALF1
Correct baseband / modem for your network . Likewise CSC ???
Restore your original firmware backup .
jje
IF your phone have correct EFS/shows proper IMEI, try this...
Restored my original backup, but still nothing.
Tried flashing a factory firmware as well but still nothing.
Also, after checking the box, the phone I got was a branded 3 phone. (3 being my network carrier) - Didn't realise till now as my previous GS3 was factory unlocked, the insurance company must've replaced it with a 3 branded one!
Does this make any difference?
Anyone?
Literally no idea what else to do now!
Cheers
Search for Ariza Pach here on xda. I had your same problem, and this pach fixed it.
