[Q]Need help to root my phone - HTC Desire X

I want to root my desire x and install most stable and good looking ROM. I rooted a sony erricson device but it was real easy unlike HTC. I was reading guides on this forum and got confused regarding recovery, s-off, RUU, kernel, CID etc etc.
Please help me with simple guide and minimum chance to brick my device.

I see that u r an xperia survivor, so im gonna explain a few steps.
In HTC, the recovery is not part of the kernel, like sony. HTC has a separate partition where recovery.img is flashed.
Kernel for ROM/OS booting is contained in boot.img and it is flashed in boot partition.
Recovery also contains a copy of kernel (zImage) so it is independant of the boot.img.
To root it, you have to somehow accomplish below steps.
1. Unlock Bootloader for your phone. Go to htcdev.com and search and follow instructions from main page.
2. Reboot phone in "FASTBOOT MODE" and Flash a custom recovery through fastboot.exe tool. Syntax is "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". Use any available CWM or TWRP (mine). Take care whether you want ICS or JB compatible recovery becoz they work is different.
3. Take a nandroid backup through recovery. (You probably know this as it is same in all phones)
4. Flash a custom ics/jb rom.
5. Reboot phone in FASTBOOT MODE and flash the recommended "boot.img" mentioned in ROMs thread.
Use a little common sense and soon you'll learn doing things the HTC way.

Yasir

You have to chose in bootloader "Recovery"- in Recovery mode (CWM) can you make a backup, not in bootloader
The backup is for cwm
i don't know how many files the backup with cwm had, with TWRP it has 7 files with 1.5 GB

In directory clockworkmod/backup on your SD-Card is the backup file (ca. 400MB) and the name of this file is the date and the time you have create the backup.
The Rom in my signature is a full sense rom. mySENSE-dx RC3.5

So now i have rooted my device. Please point me towards a suitable ROM to install and also the procedure...Waiting for reply.

How did you flash the CWM recovery?
with rooting guide. After this i tried to rflash it with ROM manager. From rom manager i can reboot into recovery (CWM) fine. But not from hboot.. (it will be loaded system android recovery)
i read smth in threade for some another phone, that there is two files, which need to be removed via adb.
So... if it's right - what files exactly ?
Uhm, are you S-OFF?
How do you mean stock recovery?
You can't flash any recovery if your not S-OFF most recovery's are fake flash recovery's which is just almost the same except you need adb or a zip file on your SD.
(if you don't know what S-OFF is, search the development section(explaining wouldn't be as good and as complete)
i'm s-on
so without s-off i can't use full functional ?)
Use fake flash as stated before. There's not much profit from S-OFF unless you're a dev, or you need to write files to /system on-the-fly.

Ya, search for the CWM 3 Update.zip in dev-section, push it on the root of your SD and start into stock recovery. Now push vol-up+power and navigate with the volume keys to flash update.zip now you are in CWM without starting the app.
Ps: you have to rename the downloaded recovery file to update.zip

To make it even easier here's the link to the post in dev u need.

Download the attached file, name it update.zip, place it in the root of your sdcard and like stated above, u're ready to go.
Just run the "apply sdcard:update.zip" and u'll boot right into CWM!

[Q] need help flashing new rom for HBOOT 0.43.0003

a friend gave me his legend so i can update it to a better rom
i'm planing on CM7.2 KANG build
the phone is stock, from local operator...
S-ON
HBOOT: 0.43.0003
RADIO: 7.08.35.21
FW: 2.1-update1
baseband: 47.39.35.09U_7.08.35.21
build: 2.05.461.52 CL218650
i know that i can SOFF it via a tool HTC has released but i also know that i don't really need it and i can use CM even with C-ON (am i right?)
most root guides i see are for 1.01 and not 0.43 so i prefer asking then killing the phone
You don't want to unlock the bootloader with HTC's tool! You can flash the Alpharev bootloader! That one allows everything, even downgrading.
REMEMBER: ROOTING WILL VOID WARRANTY AND YOU ACCEPT FULL RESPONSEBILITY!!
To root if you have S-OFF:
- First download any rooted rom (eg the 7.2 KANG rom) and CWM recovery (You want the S-OFF .img file): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290841 Put the rooted ROM on your SD card. You'l need the recovery later.
- Download fastboot (I uploaded it for you to make it easier: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33521967/fastboot.exe) Then put fastboot in a folder. Also put the CWM recovery image in the same folder as fastboot.exe. Then do Shift + Right click on the folder and chose "open command prompt here" then do
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-legend.img
Now turn of your phone then press volume down + power at the same time. Navigate to recovery using the volume buttons. Then press the power button. Now the phone should boot in Clockworkmod recovery.
Now you can use the trackball of your phone to scroll down to install zip from SD card en click on the trackball to choose that option. Now select choose zip from SD card. Now you'll see the contents of your SD card. Scroll down the .zip file of the rooted ROM you downloaded and click on the trackball again. Now choose Yes - Install ............. (WARNING THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE PHONE!) after a succesfull install of the ROM you have a rooted device!
i tried Alpharev made problems
i used this guide to downgrade to 1.13 and root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-legend/
in the CWM S-on option
do i rename the zip file to update.zip?
If you don't want S-OFF you can use that guide the unlocker. And if you use the S-ON CWM then you use FakeFlash, You have to rename the CWM zip package to update.zip, boot up in recovery, then select update.zip, you'll get CWM recovery.
But if you want S-OFF, what problems do you have with Alpharev? With S-OFF it's way easier, you don't need to downgrade ur ROM, you can just flash anything, like I said in my previous post.
ITS ALIVE!!!
thx for all the help... got it to run with normal nightly CM7
mine is s-on
how to make it s-off
hboot is 0.43

[Q] Kernel Update Possible Questions

I been searching around all over the place and I am just hitting my head against the wall. Any help would be appreciated.
This is my setup: hboot 1.5 S-ON, I have unlocked using the HTC method. I have Revolutionary CWM recovery installed.
I am looking to update the Kernel and Radio/PRI of the phone to the latest versions. (I haven't done it in a very long time.)
By what I read, since I have hboot 1.5 updating the kernel seems close to impossible. I did read that I may have to go to a Stock Rom and update via sprint OTA to get the latest updates then unlock again? That doesnt sound right to me.
I am all types of confused. Part of this was started because I wanted to try the MeanROM (link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466362) and also update my phone. Everything I try to do fails or I cant do because of the 1.5 or the S-ON.
Hopefully i am making some sense. I dont know what I have to do to get the latest kernel or if it even is possible.
If you are rooted already the only thing you need to do is install flash GUI app (you can get it in the market) and flash the kernel (boot.img) file before you flash the ROM and you should be OK
There is a myth that if your on 1.5 s-on your doomed, that's not true. It does mean that you'll need an extra step to do things but you'll be able to get things done without issues.

Thank you for the reply, so I understand I can load that application, unzip the rom I want which will have the boot.img. Then flash that boot.img and then install that rom, is that correct? Lastly, does this also update the radio and pri?

If your firmware is compatible with the Rom and kernel yes. If not, you will brick your phone or features will not work as they have to do. After you install flash GUI go to browse button and you will be advertised that file is too large for a kernel or recovery image, then asks if it is a valid Rom zip file. Tap yes and it will search the kernel inside the Rom. After it finishes tap flash and after reboot in recovery(you have to have recovery.img in root of your SD card), next wipe dalvik and cache, install zip and wait until the phone finishes. It is also recommended to you to make a nandroid backup before install anything.

For the EVO 3D, much like the EVO 4G, the custom ROMs generally do not contain the radio or pri images.
There are some different reasons for this, but one of the common reasons being some users claim to experience different radio performance based on their geographic loation in relation to different versions of the radio and pri images.

The only clarification to this post would be having recovery.img in the root of your SD card is not required for rebooting into recovery mode. In order for a custom recovery to load, when rebooting into recovery mode, the recovery.img has to have been flashed previously. Flash Image GUI can also flash the recovery.img to the recovery partition so when you reboot into recovery, the proper custom recovery loads. Most users flash custom recoveries infrequently when compared to how often they flash ROMs so the process for flashing the recovery process isn't covered as often.
In general, regarding the OP's original question of flashing the "MeanROM", the Flash Image GUI thread provides a great beginner step by step guide I wrote to help walk thru the general overview and process. I've quoted it below for easy reference.
Appreciate all the support of Flash Image GUI! I'll echo the optimism for hboot 1.5 s-on unlocked users, most everything is still possible. HTC just requires an extra few steps which can be frustrating, but once they are learned, the process is fairly smooth.
Hope the clarification helps iron out any confusion on the details!
HTC Unlock - Hboot 1.5 Users Guide for ROMs with a Kernel (boot.img file):
1) Unlock using HTC method for Hboot 1.5 users
2) Load this application, Flash Image GUI, onto the device, either through the Market or the link provided in this OP.
3) Download ROM .zip file to the sdcard on the device.
4) Open up Flash Image GUI, select Browse and select the ROM .zip file, downloaded to /sdcard in the previous step.
5) Flash Image GUI will provide a warning, reminding that the ROM .zip file will *need* to be flashed in the custom recovery afterward.
6) Flash Image GUI will index the full ROM .zip file searching for the kernel and kernel modules. Once located, the Flash Image button should be enabled.
7) Select the Flash Image button and Flash Image GUI will load the kernel modules and kernel from inside the ROM zip file.
8) Select reboot recovery.
9) Inside the custom recovery, load/flash the ROM zip file.
10) Reboot to normal Android mode and all should work including Wifi!

After spending some time on this one, I finally am being able to backup my stock recovery . I am just penning down the steps incase some one intereste....
For Htc one X+ we first need to find the recovery partition . that can be achieved by running the following command from any terminal emulator
with busybox installed.
cat /proc/emmc
which will give an output some like this
mmcblk0p5: 00fffe00 00000200 "recovery"
This is the recovery partition block ...
the next step will be to backup the recovery partition in an img format.
1. We need to have root permission in order to read through the /dev/block/ directory. So
Type :
su dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
(su grants you admin access and dd is a common command to backup partitions in Linux)
That's it the recovery partition is backed up on your sdcard..

Hey by any chance any one tried to flash the recovery?

[Q] Stuck on Sony Logo

So I thought of installing a new ROM to my XZU today. First I rooted my device using the following guide : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkQT3nX5yWM. (As I had updated my device to Android 4.4.4 and had .108 FW). I successfully rooted the phone and took a TA Backup. Afterwards, I went on to unlock the bootloader and unlocked it successfully as well. As I wanted to install the ParanoidAndroid 4+ ROM, I downloaded it and got the boot.img from the ZIP file, and flashed it using the Flashtool. However, afterwards, when I tried to go the recovery mode, it is stuck on the Sony Logo, and doesn't blink the notification LED in order to do so.
Did I do anything wrong? I am quite a noob when it comes to XZU related stuff..so I would really appreciate if someone can help me out..
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: (Thought of editing this thread rather than deleting it so that it could be an help for someone who faces a similar problem) I was able to make my device up and running again by flashing the FTF found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2798690.
Now, I have again come to the status where I have installed a recovery successfully and unlocked my bootloader, and I want to install PA 4+ to my device. Would really appreciate if anyone can guide me on how to do this
It doesn't sound like you did any thing wrong.
Do you have [NUT]'s recovery installed now?
Do a nandroid backup if you do, saves the whole flashing a FTF step if something goes wrong
Did you get the correct PA? what date?
PA should install fron [NUT]'s recovery or you could hotboot the boot.img with flashtool (this wont over write you current kernel) this will let you test if it does work

Thank you. Yes, I read quite a lot yesterday and found out that I have followed the steps properly. So I am wondering if it has got anything to do with the boot.img from the PA ROM?
And yes I did a nandroid backup previously as well, however, I was not aware of how to restore it because I couldn't access the recovery mode. Can I do the restore using the FlashTool? or some other tool in such a scenario?
I downloaded "pa_togari-4.5-BETA1-20140805.zip" available in this link: http://aospal.hostingsharedbox.com/aospal/roms/togari/ . Should I try the last stable release rather than the beta one?
I am sorry for this noobish question, but what exactly is the purpose of "boot.img"? Is it the kernel of the new ROM that I am going to install? or is it something else? I kinda think that the problem might have been with the way I flashed the boot.img previously. I used the option "SELECT SYSTEM TO FLASH" under the fastboot of FlashTool in order to do so. Is it wrong? Should I use the "SELECT KERNEL TO FLASH"?
Thank you again
EDIT: I used the "SELECT KERNEL TO FLASH" option in the Flashtool, to flash the boot.img and I was able to flash the PA 4+ successfully! ..Thank you!

Normally the way to recover would be to flash a boot.img that works and then enter recovery rand restore, easy when you flash the boot.img correctly

The boot image is the kernel and recovery backed into one (it's a Sony thing ) and it belongs on the /boot partition

I think you have figured that one out now :cyclops:. So what you did was write the kernel and recovery to the /system partition, not to where it belongs ie /boot
You can also use the "select kernel to boot (hotboot)" (or what ever words it uses) to boot a kernel/recovery and not change the one on the /boot partition - can be handy at times
I hope that helps you understand some bits about your new Sony ZU
Yep! thanks a lot for your help! Really appreciate it! :victory:
