[Q] Insufficient storage error for selective apps - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I just got a second hand SGS3 (Australian, stock build etc)
I was using 'My Backup' by rerware to transfer everything from my HTC Legend over to the S3. Some of the apps would install fine and some it just says could not install due to insufficient storage, but then then next one might work etc. One is Whats App, one is my banking app etc.
I have 10GB on the phone and a 12 GB free on SD card... BUT, when i opened up App2SD app, it sayd there is no SD card (see screen shot).
(I also think i messed up by importing some settings from my legend home screen because now i cant add shortcuts to the quick access panel?)
i'm thinking of doing a hard reset and trying again.
Any help?

[Answered] Widget apps to sd card

I just got a new sd card with more memory space(had 2g now 16g). Now that i have the room i would like to transfer all my apps to sd. The thing is a lot of the apps i have ive made into widgets that way i dont have to scroll thru my app drawer every time. My bf was telling that if it is an app that i made a widget then i cant transfer it to sd. He says that the app ends up failing or having issues. I transferred my titanium a little while ago and have not had any issues. So im wondering if what he told me is true or that i can transfer to sd without encountering issues down the road??

As long as your not using built Widgets but an app shortcut (which is what it sounds like your doing) you maybe OK. But yes apps stored on SD cards with Widgets do get messes up.
If you need the widgets you'll need to leave on the phone memory. Most of these apps state this in their documentation.
Sometimes apps requires you to download a widget if you plan on moving the app to the sd card.

[Q] Problems with Turn on USB storage

Hi,
I have htc legend with C7 installed. The USB storage used to run
quite well until some day ago. Now whenever I turn it on, the status bar on
top gets hidden somewhere, and I cannot find anyway to turn it off other then
restarting. But status bar is only one problem, my computer won't show any
USB storage, and there is no way I can access the files in my device.
What could be the problem? Why is my status bar gets hidden? Also I cannot
find turn on/off USB storage option in WIFI settings menu. where is it?
Reflash your rom and everything will be running perfectly again.

I think you might have some system apps on your SD card so when that dismounts the phone crashes.
I was hoping to fix it without having to reinstall things. I dont want to do everything again , unless I go for ICS
I have been moving apps to SD card using App mover utlity (only the apps that it suggest). I will have a look again, but I don't think I can move something that systems needs to run.
Here is the list of apps in SD card which i think may be causing some troubles:
Google+
Hotmail
Messages Widget
Google+ was updated a few months after release to have it natively moved to the SD card. The only drawback is you can't use the post widget. (Which really isn't so great)
For Hotmail, you can use Hotmail Exchange ActiveSync with the Android Mail app. It's the mail app you see when you forget to install GApps. Setup: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/08/windows-live-hotmail-gets-exchange-activesync.ars
Works great.
As for the Messages Widget, I don't know what it is. But since it has the word widget, I'll tell you that Android doesn't support widgets for apps that are moved to the SD card, unless it's on an ext partition. So you'd best leave that alone.
If you're absolutely certain that these apps are the root of your problem, consider these alternatives. If you're not, still try 'em out. They're worth not risking workarounds for.

[Q] Motorola Admiral apps in limbo issue

My partner at work has the Motorola Admiral for a workphone. It is unrooted of course because of work and it is running 2.3.5. He previously had a 1 GB card in the phone with very few apps installed on it (about 8). He wanted a bigger card so he bought an 8GB card and placed it in the phone and formatted it. He gave the 1GB to his daughter who already formatted it.
He assumed like I that he could just go to Google Play and reinstall the apps. However this is not the case. When he downloads the apps he gets an error installing the apps.
Now this is the strange part. The apps do not show up in app drawer. But if he goes to application manager they are still listed there as com.xxx.xxxx with a generic icon and a little sd icon on the corner of each. Selecting them here crashes the phone back to the settings menu.
So he can't uninstall them. He can't reinstall them. SD card was completely formatted. How does he remove them from the application manager and allow for reinstallation? Any ideas? Thanks.

[Q] Moving Humble Mobile Bundle apps to SD - Failure

I have a sprint Evo 3D, rooted with the SmoothCriminal rom.
The miniscule internal memory drove me crazy, it got to the point where after the ICS update I coudlen't update a SINGLE app because the internal memory always had under 10 megs free, no matter how much I deleted it would eat it up again, so I rooted it, and started re-installing everything.
I even set up a 4GB (Wish I could make it bigger) EXT4 partition to use with Link2SD.
For those that haven't heard of the Humble Indie Bundles, they allow you to purchase a set of apps (usually on Steam, but sometimes they do Android bundles) as a set for a price you decide, with a percentage going to charity.
Anyway, for Android, since these don't use the Google Play store, they are side-loaded from their own app (though they also let you just download the APK directly).
Now, the problem is that none of the games from this bundle seem to install to the SD card. I know that not all apps can be moved there, but if the "Move to SD" option is enabled instead of greyed out, that means they can, right? Also, many of these are large games, some of them 400MB, I am surprised it even defaults to internal instead of SD and would be shocked if they are the kind of apps that cannot be installed to SD considering their size.
Anyway, while Link2SD has no problem linking them to the 4ext partition on the SD card, I am unable to move these to "external" either by the built-in app manager, or the Link2SD app (apps installed using other methods, wheather they are linked or really on internal memory, don't seem to have this issue, such as Apps installed through Google Play whether they were linked to the 4ext partition or installed to the real internal memory). With the App manager it just says "Coulden't move app" (what a helpful error message) while trying from Link2SD gives me the error "INSTALL_FAILED_CONTAINER_ERROR".
Thanks to these massive apps forcing themselves on internal, the 4GB 4ext partition is actually full!
Any ideas what I can do? This is making me pull my hair out.

[Q]Galaxy Ace S5830 Storage Space Issues CM10.2

Hello Everyone.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Ace (S5830) and until 2 days ago i was running a CM7 on it until it suddenly just stopped working and the phone hung in some kind of boot loop. That's when i decided to "upgrade" to a newer version of CM and searched for everything necessary.
I tried some CM11 alpha but since it's pretty unstable (at least the version i had was) i tried others until i settled for a stable 10.2 version (cm-10.2-20140309-UNOFFICIAL-cooper++). So far i am pretty happy since it actually is running very smoothly on my phone and i did not expect that at all. But then i ran into the same issue that basically everyone owning this phone runs into - it's very limited internal space.
Fact is i do need some google apps since i'm using gmail and synchronizing my contacts through it. Also i want to use Whatsapp, basically the only reason for me having a smartphone right now. I Installed the Dolphin Browser aswell since a decent browser is also something i'd like to use from time to time, but it seems to be full on external anyways so it should not count towards the internal storage.
Problem is now, all that is already too much for the phone's internal storage to handle since whatsapp has to stay on internal - at least that's my experience - and the google-play services that are needed aswell are placed on internal too without option of moving them.
I tried some things but basically all of them failed on one or another weird way..
- titanium backup - uninstalled system apps that i am not using (radio, browser, google play voice things, etc.) but after a reboot they were all back again. Even before rebooting, uninstalling them seemed not to open up space at all.
- Link2SD - tried linking whatsapp to my SD card, failed since whatsapp wasn't running very stable anymore. If anyone has a solution for this i'd love to hear it!
- App2SD - didn't even show any internal apps, and wasn't helping at all.
Also something i've tried, i have a message backup for whatsapp that's ~14mb but lies on my SD card. Problem seems to be that Whatsapp on recovering these messages put's them somewhere on the internal storage, at least it takes those ~14mb away from it after it recovered them. I tried to change the path whatsapp uses for internal storing of data with the app 'FolderMount' (like i found tutorials on the internet for exactly this issue) but wasn't even able to locate the internal stored data :/ Not because i just didn't find it, but because it seems not to exist...
I know i can't really increase the size of the internal storage but i think there has to be something i can do. I can't even update whatsapp since i am just living on the edge of the "low storage space" message with 20-15mb left.
What i am hoping now through this thread is to get some ideas or options how i could free up some space, move some apps around to SD maybe (utilize Link2SD correctly) or in the end basically have the things i need but some free storage on internal so that i can use my phone, maybe even install apps on SD (without them touching internal space) and have some room to update the important apps like whatsapp.

ThePatchelist
