[Q] Replacing gallery inside samsung's camera application - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey im running a modded ROM based on samsung's stock. one of the things i noticed is that the gallery, contacts and dialer opens real slow..for the contacts and dialer i managed to find great application (Exdialer) but couldnt find one to replace the gallery.
well,i did install the aokp (or aosp?) gallery from the market and it works great, but when i enter the camera application(samsung's stock) and press that little preview of pictures in the left side,it opens the stock gallery(i have tried to freeze it,didnt work) .
i think that samsung's camera application is really awesome but i cant stand the waiting to the gallery to open when i want to see the last picture taken.
any solutions?a way to make other gallery to open when i press that little picture preview? thank you :victory:

I would appreciate this as well. Too bad freezing/disabling doesn't seem to work

you can't

[Q] How to change gallery app associated with camera

Hey all. First time poster.
I'm trying to find a way to change the gallery app associated with Camera.
I have Sony Ericcson's Android 2.1 on my Xperia X10.
I've used the Gallery Shorcut to make Gallery appear in my app drawer and am looking for a way to associate it with the Camera app. There is a button in Camera that is supposed to launch Mediascape which I do not want to do.
I have frozen Mediascape and Timescape using Titanium Backup.
Is there a way to associate this soft button with Gallery without flashing my phone?
My Xperia is rooted using z4root.
Any help appreciated
Any help
Ok so I haven't had much luck as yet. I went and purchased Vignette only to find it wouldn't open images in Gallery. I've installed QuickPics which I really like and think is better then the default gallery. However my situation isn't much improved.
An idea I've had is to uninstall the Camera app (the one that came with Sony's MediaScape tie in) and reinstall the stock version. The problem is I don't know where I can find an APK for the stock Android 2.1 camera.
Hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.
Thanks

quick pick gallery setting

if im in the wrong here for a new thread, please delete it.
I think everyone can agree that the standard gallery on the atrix isnt the smoothest. Many people like me, are using quick pic. Awesome app!
My question is, how do you make that gallery the default gallery when coming straight from the camera interface? (selecting the little pic on the bottom left)
I didnt think it could be done but now im using greyblur and the dev has somehow managed to place the google 3D gallery in its place!
Any chance of putting quick pic there instead???
anybody? This gallery is driving me nuts

[Q] Image cropping for wallpaper

One annoyance of the this phone is that when I try to set a JPG to be a homescreen wallpaper, the aspect ratio that it allows you to crop to is for exactly one screen. Not a big deal if you use Touchwiz since the background doesn't scroll. But for most other launchers (I use Nova), it looks retarded having black space to the left and right of the central image.
Anyone find a workaround for this?
Thanks.
Yes, you need to use the stock ICS Gallery app to do it.
I just figured this out as I am using Trebuchet, there's a thread regarding replacing apps with their stock android counterparts here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728308
Note that you don't have to replace the TouchWiz Gallery app, you can have both (I do atm since that thread said replacing it broke the camera preview).
Just open the wallpaper you want in the ICS Gallery app and set as wallpaper within it so you can properly crop it for scrolling.

Thanks for the reply.
Sorry if I'm being dense, but when I try to install the Gallery2.apk, it says something about replacing a system app. How did you get it to have dual install?
I just copied Gallery2.apk into the system\app folder and installed it - just hit yes. It won't replace the TouchWiz Gallery app. You get that 'replacing system app" thing with anything you install to system/app it seems... got that when I installed Trebuchet as well, and had both it and TouchWiz accessible till I deleted SCLauncher2 or whatever it's called.

That's what I did, and it installed the new gallery. But when I hit the ICS gallery icon in the app drawer, it just launches the Samsung gallery...although when I hit set as, crop picture using ICS gallery, it works fine. I still can't just launch the ICS gallery though.

Wallpaper Wizardrii lets you crop the image anyway you want, it's in the Play Store.

Go into Application Manager -> All
and scroll down to both Gallery apps. You may need to clear Launch By Default on them both so you can pick which to use again.

Go to Google play, look for "Gallery Pro" by KDJ Software.
I have tried many of the Gallery3d versions floating around, and this one is the best. It is faster at swiping from pic to pic compared to my Stock ICS Gallery.
On the downside, Gallery Pro sometimes shows "gradient banding" with some images.
Alternatively, take and Gallery3d apk, move it to your /system/app/ directory with permissions (use the same permissions as other stock apps in this directory) and reboot and it should install itself. Hopefully.

[Q] does the 4.2 camera app have facial effects/ special backgrounds

i have installed the 4.2 camera app on my galaxy nexus and i cant find the facial effects/ backgrounds like the ics and jelly bean camera apps had? did they remove it completely or just hid it somewhere?
I'd like to know this as well. Are they hidden or simply removed? Anyone know why?
For me, it seems like they removed the effects completely. I use 4.2 on the Nexus 7, which doesn't usually support the stock camera app. But I installed the app from the market (back when i had 4.1 on the tablet), and the 4.2 update changed the camera app to the new interface. Life effects seem to be gone, can't find them anywhere. I don't know why Google removes that stuff just like that, was a really funny feature in my opinion.
Nevertheless, i tried to find a way to get the old app back (my N7 is unrooted) and found this app: "Camera ICS" by Moblynx
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.cameraics#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDIxMiwiY29tLm1vYmx5bnguY2FtZXJhaWNzIl0
I works fine for me, there also is a paid version, but the effects work fine in this one. :good:
Thanks I didn't know that existed. Still don't see why they just wouldn't leave those options in. Also, the background options (where it says lay down the table for a moment) I was never able to get that to work in this or in the official google camera app. Is there some trick I'm not doing?
I think you have to have a clean, single coloured background for it to work. Try a simple white wall or something similar. And when it says "lay down the tablet" of course don't put it down, just make sure you get out of the picture for a moment, then back in. But it doesn't really work very well. Just a little gimmick, the facial effects are much better
