[Q] 4.0.4 to CM 10.1 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so this is an *extra* noobish question, but I just wanted to be 100% sure of things before I did anything.
Is it safe to flash CM 10.1 from Android 4.0.4? My Galaxy S2 isn't wanting to update to 4.1.2 from 4.0.4 for whatever reason, but seeing as CM 10.1 will be a clean flash, will it matter?
I didn't think it would have, seeing as (from what I understand) it completely replaces the OS, but I just wanted to check before doing anything, just in case. After all, I don't really want to do anything to my phone like that without being 100% sure on everything first

I had 4.0.4 and went to cm 9 them to cm10.1 nightly. Just flash and wipe cache and dalv in cwm then reboot. Dont full wipe
After cm installed you can full wipe.
Make sure flash is successful to cm befor full wipe.
alliance 7.3
apollo 4.5 extreme v2
I9100

As your on 4.0.4 flash a custom kernel like siyah before you do anything and don't wipe data in cwm.

Hey buddy,
!!!first of all please just do a Backup of all, so that u always (99% of cases) can go back.!!!
!!!That for backup all apps and save them backuped folder and all other important files to PC!!!
After that u should root ur phone (CWM comes with it - replaces the recovery mode)
the un can copy all files to sd card and can flash the zip's BUT only with a full factory reset. (this is the most reason for problems alter on)
For more infos please check the newbie sections.
PS: This is only the easiest and fastest way. This maybe isn't the most secure one, as u dodn't update the android version before etc...
But it should work anyway
PPS: An exactly guide for flashway u find in my supported i9100 RootBox-thread (signature) in my Help-Index [FLASH]

Right, so I've already flashed Siyah V5.0.1 Kernel, and have made a backup of my data using CWM.
Hmm, should I just install the CM 10.1 using the CWM Rom installer? Or would this not work seeing as I'm not running the latest version of my phone?

As I said it should work.
Keep in mind to do the full wipe and flash Gapps after rom.
Much success

[Q] Cyanogenmod 9 install/help

hey guys,
so after reading the CM9 install guide, looks like I need to flash the stock ICS first. I'm currently using MIUI 2.1.7 which is still gingerbread.
I went to the stock ICS firmwares:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
But didn't see any North American or Canada firmwares, does it matter if I get the Argentina one, or can anyone direct me to a North American version.
Another question is, after I flash the stock ICS, will I still have my root and CWM?
Thanks,
eclipse

Incorrect, just flash cm9.
I can go from MIUI gingerbread, straight to the latest CM9?
So just follow the flashing instructions I guess, and skip all the other nonsense?
If you're flashing through CWM there is a long and complex process to flashing such a complicated ROM:
Step 1. Factory reset/ wipe cache/ wipe dalvik cache
Step 2. Flash CM9
EDIT: Remember to keep breathing whilst you do it, sometimes I need to focus so intently on the complex process I forget.
One more question, if I wanted to update CM9 via Rom Manager, to a newer nightly, would any data/apps/contacts be lost or reset, or is it just an update?
Nightlies are just an update, no need for a wipe.

Don't use rom manager, I've been hearing bad things about it. Just use cwm recovery. And no data would be lost, just don't data wipe / factory reset in cwm recovery

[Q] How to update from CM7 to CM9 in mini pro SK17i

Forgive my ignorance, but i have to ask this question for this specific device to make sure that I will not brick my phone.
I bought my phone 3 months ago, it came with 2.3 and I flashed CM7 using the tutorial of this device in the CM wiki site.
Now that the stable CM9 was released, I want to update it.
So I have some questions about how to proceed:
It will be necessary to use fastboot to flash the boot.img again?
Factory reset and wipe data will be needed?
I need to update the baseband (I live in Brazil)?
Assuming I want to downgrade to CM7 (or restore a backup of CM7). Is it possible? Will be complicated?
A future upgrade to CM 9.x, will be simple?
Thank you in advance.

u must flash 4.0.4 stock rom and then flash cm9 kernel and then install the rom from CWM...
flashing 4.0.4 will Reset ur kernel and baseband to default...
and if u want to return to cm7.2 u must flash GB stock rom and then CM7.2 kernel and then the installation...
any more questions??
Hmm...The procedure of flashing CM9 is the same.
As long as you know how to flash CM7,then just follow the guide to flash CM9.
So,flash boot.img via fastboot -> enter CWM -> fully wipe(recommended) -> install rom & Gaaps(for ics) -> reboot & enjoy.
P.S. Your phone will still work without upgrading the baseband, however,it's recommended.

Well i see you use CM 9 in your mini pro, Considering that i will need to search a tutorial to flash stock ICS, do you think CM 9 it's worth the effort, or is better stick to CM 7.2 until CM 10 is released. Since CM team announce that will be no further develop to CM 9 (only bug fixes and security updates)?

That's right. You don't need to flash stock rom.
All you have to do is follow this update guide, and I think you have already done it when flashing CM7.
And you can go back to CM7 from CM9 anytime, just do the same thing.
The baseband is recommended by developers, but I'd suggest you not update it so soon.Because the baseband(72) may cause your battery drain faster, which means your phone will work fine without updating it.
Good luck.

[Q] From 2.3.4 to CM9 ?

Hey there,
I'm currently using a Galaxy S2, which is running stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 (no updates available through OTA nor Kies)
Baseband version: I9100XXKI1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
Buildnumber: GINGERBREAD.XWKI4
And now I would like to get CM9 on my phone. Although I read quite a lot of threads and tutorials, I still have some
unanswered questions left.
Of course I would like to get onto CM9 in the fastest (and safest) way possible, but I'm not really sure how I would accomplish this.
Is it rather better (or even possible) to just go from 2.3.4 directly to CM9? Could I first root it using insecure kernel or CF-Root and then use CWM Recovery to flash CM9? And would this process actually flash all the necessary things, like the correct firmware, kernel and bootloader?
Or should I use Odin to flash it to stock ICS first and then just follow the official full update guide from the Cyanogenmod Wiki (because it is written with the requirement of stock ICS running on the phone) ?
Please help me out with this, I'm thankfull for every answer that I get
Follow the noob-proof instructions on the first post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20841817 , and you can jump to cm9 from your current firmware, no need to go to stock ics first.

Just another question, as far as I understood it I don't need to root before applying the Resurrection Edition of CM9, right?

No. It already includes CWM recovery. After you flash it, boot to CWM and flash the last cm9 update + gapps, wipe data/cache and reboot.
Make sure you put the .zip files on your sdcard first
Great thanks!
This seems to be easy as it can get
Oh and just one more thing, should I do a backup of some sorts? Just a little bit unsure, because then I would have to root first, do a backup and then would be able to the whole CM9 thing (I don't know if the rooted kernel could somehow interfere with the Resurrection Edition later on)

Yeay, just flashed my phone and everything worked out smoothly and perfect, didn't have any problems at all
(I also didn't do a factory reset, is it necessary to that? Because right now there isn't any data left from before and I'm also not experiencing any problems whatsoever, so not really sure if I should do it and what it would do)
Thanks to everyone who posted here and helped me to finally flash my phone :good:

I'm not sure, but i think the NOOB proof method you used already wiped your data in the flashing process. So there is no need for you to do it again

[Q] S2 noob question

H all
I've had quite a bit of experience with modding my old SGS. I have recently acquired a S2
Anyway it's running stock 4.0.4 can i just go ahead and flash SiyahKernel? Then i can install a custom
rom (MIUI). Or will i have to root before flashing Siyah?
Not a complete noob lol.but seems a little different to the old S
Cheers
Siyah is an already rooted kernel, so as soon as you install Siyah on ur device, u'll also get root.
Try flashing a safe kernel asap, since your stock 4.0.4 is highly dangerous when it comes to wipe data. In fact, your device will get an instant brick if you wipe.

How do i get back to original rom

hi guys,
i have a samsung galaxy s2 (GT-i9100 - NFC), which i got from orange end of 2011. I the in jan 2012 got help from this forum to root my phone and change the rom from the original to:-
Rom & Build No: VillianROM 3.0
And' ver: 2.3.5
Baseband: i9100XXki1
Kernel: 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ninpo @ titan #20
Although the phone works okay, i'm beginning to notice a lot of slowdowns and regular reboots, so i want to go back to whatever latest google android OS the S2 can handle (rooted). I've forgotten what to do and would be most grateful if someone could please help me with the following:-
1. Whats the best software/method to backup everything?
2. What is the latest rom (original, but should not have a provider's bloatware) i can use on the S2?
3. Once backed up, how do i change from VillianRom to the latest/best OS currently available?
4. How can i root the original rom?
Thanks once again
Check

I think it ll help you and save you time

For official stock rom, check
www.sammobile.com
And search latest stock rom for your region.
If you like custom rom, then there are so many roms on xda. I like omega and alliance roms. Choice varies from person to person

1. Depends. You can do a backup in CWM to image your device or you can use Titanium Backup Pro to just backup your apps/appdata and restore to new rom.
2. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ < Check your device/model here.
3. Well just so you're clear, There is no "best" its subjective. Also "latest" depends on what type of rom you want to flash like Sammy/AOSP/AOKP/CM/MIUI etc. To flash latest samsung do it via ODIN, to flash any other do it via CWM. All info you need is already on forum.
4. By flashing custom kernel via ODIN.
All your questions have already been answered countless times.
Thanks very much guys. I simply want a fast lean rom as some seem to be slow running.
Doesn't get better than this.
sendign the phone for warranty?
you will need to flash back the original rom and unroot your phone.
if they found your phone is rooted the warranty void, experience it before so be aware of this.
Let me thank you guys for advicing me. I am most grateful. I read your posts a bit late and in the meantime, I think i have bricked my phone as i've flashed Samsung's original FW (I9100PBVLP8_I9100PORALP8_ORA) from sammobile.com. I used Odin v3 and successfully flashed the phone, but it's simply stuck on the boot logo. I have even done the following:-
I've managed to wipe the cache partition, but the recovery menu has No advanced options. It says:-
ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY <3a>
reboot system now
apply update from ext' storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redband fota[FS]
But i still cannot get it to boot. I have also tried to use an old nandroid.md5 backup i made, but odin reports the file as invalid.
I'm desperate guys, please could someone help me.
Download Mode and re flash.
Are you sure you are flashing the right ROM right? Check under the battery to see the Device Model.
If it's i9100, then make sure you are downloading a i9100 ROM.
Thanks very much for your advice gastonw - i have managed to fix the problem now by going into system recovery and doing a factory reset, so thank you.
Although everything seems to be working fine, i would have preferred a more newer 4.2 jelly bean rather than 4.0.3. Oh well beggars can't be choosers and all that, lol! I guess i'll have to re-root it again.
gastonw mate ur a star! I've installed the latest JB rom u posted earlier and i'm very happy with it.

Hi You could try this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 its quite safe so ether should work or wont, if don't no harm done as it doesn't need a insecure kernel.
I'm quite new myself @ this so plz use caution when trying it out.

Good to know man, enjoy it
About root, I've seen a couple of methods laying around the threads, I'm sure they're safe.
I still think that ExynosAbuse app is the fastest way to Root now (one-click).
Here's a vid. I never tried it tho.
Thanks very much for the links AnubuRe and Gastonw.
Gastonw mate, i have been playing with the rom you posted a link to. Don't get me wrong, it's great and very fast, but the downside is that it doesn't have a huge number of options to tweak etc. Now someone mentioned a rom called Neatrom, but i'm wondering what you can recommend? I don't want a bloated rom...i want a fast rom, but with some options to allow me more greater control over the phone.
Also, i know this is a bit off-topic, but can you recommend me a widget app, where i can quickly dial phone numbers i.e. by touching a person's photo?
