[Q] T-Mobile Pre-Paid: Stuck on EDGE Network?!? - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

Hi guys. I had used a HTC One S for many months with the T-Mobile $30 per month unlimited data plan (5GB @ 4G). I am in the New Orleans area and it worked great for those months - 4G all the time. Now, after transferring my SIM card to my super-duper One M7, the network bar only reads E, which I understand is close to 2G speeds. And it is slow. What can the difference be?? The One M7 should have even better antenna, etc. than the One S. Please help.

Unlocked HTC One can't connect to T-Mobile's "4G" on AWS (1700/2100Mhz), only on 1900Mhz.
If your area hasn't be refarmed where they repurpose GSM/EDGE 1900 for "4G" than you'll be looking at EDGE.
There are like a hundred posts discussing this issue.

Wow. How extremely disappointing.

Which HTC One model do you have?

I dont know, the one that shipped on Thursday last week. Pre-ordered unlocked HTC One. Using 2G totally defeats the purpose of why I got this phone! Is there a way I can find out plans for changing the frequencies in my area? This really sucks.

You might need an updated SIM card.

Go into a T-Mo store they can tell you if or about when your area should be reformed.

What do you think the updated SIM card would do? THis is one of the $0.99 SIM cards you order for the pre-paid plan. Does anyone have info on how to get a new SIM card and transfer account accordingly?

It depends on your old SIM card and phone. I know when I switched to my Amaze I had to get a new card for the 4G to work right. I don't know - that is why I suggested going to a retail store and asking.

Developer edition won't do 4g on T-Mo no matter what you do with the sim. The sim is fine. As noted above you need 1900 refarmed to get LTE or you'll be stuck on EDGE

Update: I do NOT have the developer version. I work about a mile away where I get the E signal. Bad. But then at home I get the H signal - GOOD! It stays at 3G then throttles up to H when I need to download something. So is my question still, "When is T Mobile reforming 1900 in my E area?"
Is it reforming or refarming?
What other prepaid carriers should I look at to get the good speeds all over? - New Orleans area. I figure I can just try one out for a month to see if I like it - after all, thats what I got an unlocked phone for, right?
THanks again yall.

Why does everyone gloat over lte, when it's anything but exclusive in all places , people just should focus on hspa+ ,wait for lte to be out and as common as ever.... before worrying about lte speeds .... Granted it's hit and miss across U.S....for now .
When it's as common and natural as Verizon's lte out which is everywhere then it's worth worrying about .

[Q] AT&T 3g SIM card on GS2 and unlimited data plan retention

Hello All! First off, this is my first post on this forum, and I must say, that I am glad to be a part of a "community" that is passionate about mobile technology!
Question: I currently use an iPhone 3Gs on AT&T. I have the unlimited data and text message plan. If I decide to purchase an unlocked GS2, will my 3G sim card out of my iphone work in the GS2? Also, will I be able to keep my unlimited data and text plan?
Thanks in advance!
As far as I know, and from my experience. Yes.
I am also on that plan, and it works great for me in NYC. HSPA+ 95 percent of the time.
yes, because technically, youre not cancelling the original plan.
Thanks for the reply everyone! So just to clarify, my regular iPhone 3G sim will fit and work on the GS2? Will I only be able to receive 3G connectivity since I don't have a 4G sim or data plan?
Yes it will fit but not sure about the other question.

Anyone know if I will only be able to receive 3G connectivity since I do not have a 4G sim card? Also, will I have to call in to AT&T customer service to have them activate the GS2?

You will receive 4g speeds ( actually hsdpa + which att calls 4g)
U dont need to activate ur phone in att to get it to work with data or phone
To activate the 4g network for ur phone u will need an imei from atrix or other ATT 4g plan.
The imei of SGS 2 wont show up in ATT network as a 4g phone as they do not have that data base.
There is big thread here on how to thistopic - The pages 8-11 , I think are more fruitful

i used my wife's atrix. Some people had luck by going to the att store and getting one from one of the reps
Even though I love the GS2, having to locate a "4G IMEI" to get the phone to work on AT&T sounds like too much work!
Hate to say it, but I think I may end up waiting for the AT&T variant (ATTAIN) to come out this year. Sucks there isn't a release date in sight as of yet!

The phone WILL WORK on AT&T no matter what. You will get H+ service no matter what. However if you are switching SIM from a 3G phone, most likely your H+ speed will be capped at like 6 Mbps. To unlock at&t backhaul that is not capped, you OPTIONALLY may want to call in an ask them to change your existing plan to the plan they have for AT&T certified 4G devices like the Infuse. In order to do that, AT&T needs a random IMEI number from such a device. You can give them ANY number. Just stop buy AT&T store, take a look at a display Infuse, go to menus to see the IMEI and take a picture of that screen, then give that number to AT&T rep.
This is just how their plan changing software works, it needs a capable IMEI to put you on the "4G" network.
Just to reiterate , by default imported SGS2 will work on 3g and 4g on AT&T, 4G "may-be" capped though at 6 or so Mbps. I personally do not give two ****s about this capping because only on a rare day I can get more than 3 Mbps in my market (New York) where AT&T sucks tremendously. So I did not bother to call in and upgrade.
Note though, that you do NOT want to call in and upgrade if you are on a dumbphone plan.
Why would you not go back to Media Net plan? It costs 10 bucks with messaging plan, its unlimited and you get H+ speed.

Thanks for the info.
I am currently using my Unlimited Data plan of my iPhone 4 on my SGS2.
I bought this simtray that can hold the micro sim so it fits in the SGS2.
The speeds I get are on the so called 4G network H+ but I am not that impressed for now.
Right now the Upload speed I get is 2.2Mbps Down / 0.79Mbps Up and 138ms Ping. I believe this could be better.
I guess I will try to get the IMEI changed with an Atrix as mentioned.
*Update*
So I just talked with ATT over chat when I logged on to their website.
I lied to them and told them I had an ATT ATRIX 4G and needed the right speed.
They asked me for the IMEI, so I searched for an ATT ATRIX 4G IMEI on Google , they changed it on my account and now I have unlimited HSPA dataplan.
I did some tests with the APN both give more or less the same results but the area I am currently at is not that great for H+ but I did see improvement in the upload speed.
Right now I have 2.39Mbps Down / 1.03Mbps Up and 142ms ping.
Will try it out tonight when I am more close to H+ areas but my iPhone SIM just works fine in my SGS2

I currently have the unlimited data plan on my iPhone 3Gs. I do not want to lose it downgrading myself to the cappeed bandwidth plan. Will the standard AT&T 3G sim card (non-micro sim chip) work in the GS2? Does the imported GS2 come with a sim tray?

No SIM tray in the package, SGS2 was not build for Apple converts.
Your unlimited 3G will be grandfathered if you put that SIM (with your own adapter) into the SGS2.
Further, I believe (but am NOT sure) you can call in and ask them to "mark" your grandfathered unlimited plan as 4G by telling them your new device is an Infuse or Atrix and giving them the IMEI, per the numerous posts here. I repeat, I did NOT do it myself, so I can't 100% assure you can do it and will not lose anything.
I just upgraded my Unlimited 3g plan to 4g and at&t accidentally put me on the 2gb limited plan and removed my txt messaging. Don't know how the rep made this mistake.
Wasnt a big deal to resolve and get back the unlimited plan. Just make sure you clarify multiple times.
Btw, my 4g and 3g speeds suck in salt lake city. Can't get higher than 2mb download.

My understanding is that once you switch from 3G to 4G, AT&T will remove the unlimited data and ask to put you on one of their new data plans. THis is how they are getting people to let go of the unlimited data. Is this true?

HTC Amaze on Straight Talk-- ATT or Tmo sim??

Hi guys I an recently switching from Verizon over to Straight Talk to save some money. 45$ a month unlimited.. You can't beat it. Anywho here is my dilemma. I live in Michigan and out in the country on a lake where reception isn't that great as it is but it's still functional. I want to know if I should use the TMO Sim or the ATT Sim they offer. I already have a Tmo sim I can activate but if I do and the service sucks they said I need to change my number to get the att sim switched in. My question is will it give me any insight into my possible reception if I put in the sim b4 activating it and drive around? Bc it seems to show bars for awhile then just drop off and say no service after awhile for about 10mins then it comes in and out intermittently. Any insight is appreciated thank you!!
On another note I heard about some att /Tmo roaming agreement? If I could roam atts voice service all should be well right? Or is that not for mvno carriers? I really like my number or else I'd take the chance!

Consider looking into Walmarts T-mobile Prepaid 4G plan if the Straight Talk doesn't have good coverage.
$30 for 100 minutes, and unlimited text and data (5GIG of 4G data).
If you prepaid it with credit card, you get $5 off making it $25.
I love the plan, and only ONCE have gone over the 5G of data. Speeds average 2-6MB, and with good coverage up to 15-20MBps

thinking of switching from simple mobile... do any of you guys have issues with throttling? simple mobile throttles same as t-mo does after 2GB... also, what SIM card do I need for it to work? I have an old at&t SIM and a couple old T-Mo SIMs... do they require you to use one of theirs? If so, where do you get it? I went by my local wally world and they only sold the stupid phones and re-up cards, no SIMs and the person that was available was zero help... any info would be GREATLY appreciated... I'm not too worried about the speed difference, I'm in a large metro area, so I'm sure it won't be a huge difference whether I use t-mo or at&t...
ok, well I found the SIM on their site, ordered it, got free shipping... will purchase the unlimited plan when I receive the SIM and will report back with some comparison (to SimpleMobile) photos... I just went the "unlocked GSM phone" route instead of choosing one or the other, which I guess means it's equivalent of going the att route...

Yeah..i did the same thing. Supposedly they pick best SIM for your area. I say if you know what phone you have and what service is better in your area, just pick it instead of letting them. I ended up with ATT and signal was horrible at my house, dropped calls all the time. So i recently swapped over to ST TMO SIM and it's been amazing. I had verizon and it was terrible (at my house), sprint was the worst, no signal whatsoever. I don't live out in the country or anything either. It's like a dead spot just at my house, my brother lives down one block from me and has verizon and is great for him.
Anyhow...ST TMO with a Samsung Galaxy Blaze gets 10MB/s down and 1MB/s up. Download speeds faster then my home ISP.
Only had ST TMO for a week and it's been alot better then ATT for me. So it will be trial and error. Whatever fits best for you, but what's good about it is that SIM card is only $15 if you have to try the other one.
Good luck!

I just bought the Tmo SIM, the ATT service was horrible (Orlando, FL) dropped more calls this month than I have in the last 3yrs... absolute SHYTE!!! FU ATT!!! soooooo happy that "merger" failed hard on it's face!!!
Just my two cents hope this clarifies st just pays Atat and t-mobile to use there network, servers etc. They can't alter it ie. Roaming agreements. So if you have.both sims try them both to see which works better t-mobile still gives 4g I don't think Atat can on st. Also ive changed a number from a phone to a sim while it was activated.

Important: When you buy a ST sim card you will have a choice between at&t or t-mobile networks.
http://www.straighttalk.com/shopsims
If you chose.. "Unlocked GSM Phone (Phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands)" this is the at&t network card.
If you chose.. "T-Mobile Compatible Phone" this is the t-mobile network card.
You can buy both cards and switch networks without losing your minutes or being charged for switching networks. In the your ST control panel both cards (after registration) will be listed as available options.

[Q] Can I Unlock HTC Evo 4G LTE - AT&T

Hello everyone!
I'm new here, and am in the process of buying my new phone. I was in the debate of the Samsung Galaxy S3 but I have decided to go with the Almighty One HTC Evo 4G LTE. I noticed it's special because of my own personal preferences, and due to the fact that its only available for SPRINT.
So my question is: Can I unlock this Almighty smart phone to be used on the AT&T carrier? I have AT&T and can't get out the contract until July of 2013.
Would I be able to use the 4G LTE on it and every other feature on the AT&T network?
Thanks

You cannot use the EVO LTE on AT&T because Sprint and AT&T use 2 different cellular technologies. Sprint is CDMA and AT&T is GSM. It won't work at all

People hate on sprint. But it's not too bad. Sure it has its low points (I've seen hellrizon 3G slower than sprints) but for the price and unlimited data... Can't beat it. Plus the LTE is boss (both phone and network) I pull 20mbs

Nice, 20 mbs! That's music to my ears..
I have about 5 years with AT&T with 4 lines. I been with them since the iPhone 3GS (Unlimited Data).
Now they are changing customers plans without there knowledge. I notice my plan went from Unlimited Data to 5GB Tethering Data.
I called to see what or who confirmed this change, they said they did the change because they notice that I was using to much data for my Unlimited data that they have to change it to 5GB Tethering & charge me $15 dollars extra for any additional GB use.
I was like WTF, isn't unlimited data suppose to be Unlimited? They had no say bu that I was using my data plan to tether my connection.
I quickly dis-agreed and told them i will be canceling my service.
About 2 - 3 weeks later my wife received a Message on her iPhone 4s that she is using to much Data on her phone. If she passes 3GB of her "Unlimited Data Plan since 5 years" they will have to Lower her data Speed from 3G to Edge.
She couldn't believe me when I told her At&T got me for a sucker and they getting her too.
I have a friend that works for AT&T, and she tells me that Corporate is being shady with their service.
I'm about to go to Sprint today and check out the phone and see what they can do for me to get the "Almighty HTC Evo 4G LTE"
While still paying for AT&T until April 2013.. If I do get my line connected with Sprint. I will disconnect the sim from my iPhone 4 and place it onto a Motorola pre-paid "Backup" phone I have. And use that to Disconnect the Data Plan from that line in AT&T and lower my monthly Mins to minimal.
Just to go with Sprint!
Well, that's All Folks!

[Discussion]T-Mobile Unlocked HOX+ Users

Hey yall I just wanted to start a discussion thread for T-Mobile like me who are braving T-Mobile's refarmed network and using the HTC One X+ (International or unlocked AT&T variant). Maybe we can get a few tips and tricks together to make our user experience a bit better.
For example, such radios yall are using, any build.prop edits that might help data speeds or GPS locking speed (if you are using the international version like I am).
Ill update the OP with the list of suggestions, maybe an FAQ.
I've been using the Phone Info app to turn off the LTE radio, although I'm not entirely sure that is does. I use the GSM auto mode which is the default on 3G non LTE phones. The default on the One X+ is GSM/WCDMA/LTE
Is anyone experiencing weak or wavering 3G signal (over PCS) as discussed toward the end of this thread (scroll down about halfway on page three)?

The very knowledgeable posters there say that T-Mobile is using less power on PCS (WCDMA), as compared to AWS, right now. And probably won't turn it up until they start shifting AWS to LTE.

Definitely especially indoors. I get full bars of PCS where available, but indoors I'm switching between 3G/"4G" and Edge.

Do you have a phone with AWS 3G to compare in the same location and see if it has better 3G reception?

Yep, my Nexus 4 gets constant HSPA+ where I get spotty PCS
I have a question for you guys that are using the HOX+ on T-mobile.
What type of sim card are you using?
I know that on the original HTC One X, you had to use a non-gba sim card that said 50.01 on the front to make it work, and that if you used the one that said 50.05 you wouldn't get data even if you change the APN settings.
I just bought this phone a few minutes ago on Amazon and I know Houston is a 1900MHZ pcs market so that's not an issue, i just want to make sure I don't run into any issues with the sim card I have as it is fairly new.

Well I cut my sim from a regular SIM card so there aren't really numbers on it. I think you'll be safer with a newer one than an older one so you're fine.
Also located in Houston and getting pretty good 3G
I tried to sign up over at tmonews forums and registration for new users is closed. Anybody have any insight as to when that will reopen?
I believe one of the reasons TMO has to go with lower power at first is to measure the impact of their new 1900mhz spectrum usage in the existing market in question. Since other carriers are using the same spectrum they need to make sure they do not cause interference. The best way to do that is short and long term RF studies. Start off with a refarmed freq at lower power then over time bump up the power and make sure it doesnt cause any new interference. If so then your able to go to a higher power. Im sure the FCC has time constraints for this but add into it the amount of towers im sure the carrier would rather accomplish more with each visit. So if an upgrade or tweek is needed then they can also adjust the power.
Forgot to add i recently acquired the ATT version of the HTC ONE X+ 64GB and it does ok in the Dallas area. Had it switch a few times to G and E but for the most part i stays on 4G. HSPA+21.6 DL speeds go between 2megs down and 9 megs down.
Prior to that i was using a Nexus 4 and TMO GS3. I seem to have better speeds with my GS3.

The forums have been like that for a while (at least months). Don't know why. Perhaps you can email the person who writes the blog and ask about it.
I live in the Orlando area, I am on Straight Talk. I was using an at&t compatible SIM from straight talk and got up to 7mb down and 1.5mb up but these speeds were not consistent, a few days ago I switched to a t -mobile compatible SIM from straight talk and now I get consistent 12mb down and 3mb up. I was very surprised! I'm so glad I did this switch
I am using an at&t 1X+ which I unlocked.

[Q] proper APN settings for Tmobile? (using unlocked Verizon HTC One)

I switched carriers to cut costs and I live in central Seattle, so with the Tmobile Headquarters next door, I knew coverage wouldn't be an issue. I hear that Seattle is a "refarmed" area and that even non-tmobile phones can get "decent" speeds (obviously not the LTE, but some sort of 3G/4G)
Can someone knowledgeable on the subject tell me what I need to get my phone off of E and onto H?
EDIT: I think I may have got the right APN settings by changing from fast.tmobile to epc.tmobile. the speed seems faster, but it still shows E (which may just be a limitation of the handset not being able to distinguish the 1900 MHtz 2G and 3G. Or out could just be a placebo effect.
but now I found a different issue. I can't call/data simultaneously. if it's not one thing it's another. x_x
Any responses

Any responses on this one? I dont know if there is a radio.zip to be flashed on Verizon HTC ONE to work at better speeds than E(dge) which is only like 200KBPS download
Any DEVs, Senior Members who have toyed around?
Thanks in advance!!!!

Pretty much edge is all you can hope to get. the Verizon model does not transfer over to T Mobile really. T Mobile is GSM, Verizon is a CDMA world phone. Verizon simply does not support the bands that T Mobile uses for 3G with one exception, the only way you will get a 3G connection is if you live in an area where T Mobile has a refarmed its 1900 megahertz edge network.
Hello new to the HTC one here unlocked and rooted. I'm currently on the $30 plan with T-Mobile and applied the most current apn for LTE everything works except mms...if anyone know of a solution that'd be awesome I cannot get it to work.. This is the att One unlocked could that have any conflict?

Got it working had to flash custom ROM. I'm assuming the stock at&t had something to do with MMS failure
If using T-Mobile...
