[Help] Replace bootclasspath - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I am porting a ROM and I really need some help with the kernel. All I am asking is to replace the bootclasspath from init.rc in the boot.img files. I have really looked at a billion of guides and I just can't seem to get it going myself, so I hope someone can help.
I have uploaded the two boot.img files here: http://www.mediafire.com/?zq8psuzcb9878m6
If I have read it correctly, it is the bootclasspath inside port.img that needs to be copied to base.img so I can use the kernel on this ROM, please tell if I have got it wrong
Hoping someone can take a minute or two to look into this.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Replacing FRX07 system.ext2 with Sense .ext2 and booting

Basically what I want to do is take the FRX07 bundle.zip and simply replace that system.ext2 with the one from this build (That's a direct link to the .rar file, btw).
The Sense build comes in system.sqsh form and I have already managed to convert that into a working system.ext2.
My dilemma comes in here.. I need help determining which files I need to replace/modify in the initrd.gz/rootfs/system folder/etc. in order to boot this build with the most current features of FRX07 (rootfs and whatnot).
I have some experience with modifying initrd.gz and rootfs images, but I'm still extremely noobish in the sense that I don't know exactly which coding I must change to get the desired effect.
I appreciate any helpful insight in advance!
EDIT: Also, it would be VERY helpful if someone could explain the functions and purposes of the rootfs.img, initrd.gz, and kernel. I have my speculations and assumptions, of course, but knowing for sure gets me a step closer to what I want. again, thanks in advance!!

90% of the work that went into FRX07 is in system.ext2, not anywhere else. Plus the rootfs itself is designed specifically to work with the system.ext2 from FRX07. That's not to say that it's impossible to modify it, but no forum thread will ever tell you all the changes you'd need to make to get that up and running.

Ohh I see, about the rootfs and the system.ext2. But that's not to say that the work that went into the FRX07 system.ext2 wouldn't be useful for another .ext2
I know the basics of modifying the system and rootfs and I have a general idea of what needs to be done, so all I'm looking for is sorta a nudge in the right direction. I'm not expecting a to-do list, but a little goes a long way.
Plus, I doubt Google would have anything useful on this topic, especially in reference to the Tilt2. Hence, this thread lol.

Couldn't be more wrong. klinux created the Sense build, it was originally called 'rosie' before tiad8 took it and butchered it to make it appear like it was his work...

I noticed his skills in butchering.
what base are you using for the sense build? I have a successful build booting. The problem I have is with the sqsh file. If I unsquash it and try to rebuild it I get an error on boot. How did you convert it over? And do you have a working radio?
Never mind. I got it from the first post. That one is really slow port of Hero build. I have one that is a direct port and a lot smoother with the exception of the radio not working. But I am using completely updated rootfs, kernel, and initrd. The ones from xdandroid work just fine. But I use these kernels. I dunno if they are different from the ones directly from xdandroid site.

That's XDAndroid's repo for kernels... There's a .35 and .39 tree there as well.

/data/app/ functionality?

Can anyone point me in the direction to add the /data/app/ functionality to a rom, manually? I was using dsixda's kitchen, but its not working right for some reason anymore. I really want to use it on cm7 as I like to customize my rom before install. But it would be nice to know how to do it on any rom, if there is a difference. Thanks in advance...

Not sure I follow the question. A ROM installs based on its updater-script file and contents in the .zip.
If the zip has files in /data/app and the updater-script instructs package_extract_dir data/app to /data/app then all the files in the .zip's data/app will be copied over to the device's /data/app directory.
Hopefully that helps!
Thank you! It helps a little. Lol. But I know nothing about the updater-script. So I guess that's my next venture. I just want to add apps to my initial install of cm7. I'm slowly trying to build up my knowledge of how this all works. Is there a good thread on how to modify or build and updater-script, so I can mess around with it?

to answer your question specifically:
two steps:
1)add your apk files to a data/app directory inside the .zip file. 7zip works great for modifying zip files in windows.
2) add this line to the updater-script: package_extract_dir("data/app/", "/data/app/");
to answer your question generally about help on creating a ROM .zip file:
I've covered the topic a few times in answering specific questions. I did a quick google search for xda joeykrim updater-script to try and find my previous posts. i generally provide more information than is requested by the poster and link to other posts/guides to make sure i've covered most of the common issues. here are a few:
How to zip a ROM to be flashed - i provide a lot of information including links to some great guides
[Q] update.zip problems
my posts in those two threads should provide *plenty* of information. let us know if you have any other questions! good luck!
Wow. Thanks so much! After work is play time now... I learn alot better through trial and error, so I hope I don't have to keep asking, lol. Now if I could just find a good updated tutorial on compiling cyanogenmod. But that's down the road.

Making boot.img

Hi!
I'm wondering about if I replace the original #whatever#.rle with the new one in boot.img, will that hard-brick my device?
Learning how to mod.....
No. It won't.
Btw, you could have got this answer in the ace forums too..
Don't be a noob. Be a newbie..!!
Details here.

I had try it. And work's fine, nothing get hard-brick. Change *.rle file is just change the image on the 1st boot after logo and before bootanimation. I always use this tool, to change that image.
This link maybe help u:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477845
And this for step by step on Galaxy Mini with detail tutor (u can use google translate if u don't know about the lang.)
http://www.guebantu.com/2012/06/dev-tool-unpack-repack-boot-img-kernel-files-galaxy-mini/
Nah..Nothing will happen. But in Ace,it is known to cause a bug that disables the boot animation.

boot.img creation from the stock ftf

Hi everyone,
I'm noob here. I'm using Xperia S. And now learning mote about android.
However I have a question, how can I make boot.img from my ftf file?
Sure, I extracted the ftf, decrypt the kernel.sin into kernel.elf.
From kernel.elf, I decrypt it again and get 4 files, one image (I suppose it is kernel zImage), one ramdisk.gz, one file forgotten and another is elf.4.
Okay, now the problem comes.
The main purpose of me is to change the bootlogo of my Xperia S.
I searched for a day to change the bootlogo, most need to add the rle file into boot.img file (ramdisk).
For sure I read through the site how to unpack, edit and repack the boot image.
The kernel and ramdisk of mine are extracted from ftf but not existing custom Rom,
1. Can I directly use the mkbootimg program to create boot.img? Will it work out?
2. Do I need to aware of any parameters or setting for Xperia S? Since I worried that different devices have diff setting.
3. Is it better to make it on linux? I found mkbootimg.c in c language file but not precompiled program as tutorial, the link given is broken. Can work also?
Sorry, I'm really quite new and very noob, I tried searching and many other things, but still can't figure it out.
Hope that pros here can help me...

For how to decrypt the kernel.sin, you can use Flashtool (not Sony official one)
Under Tools (perhaps I remember correctly), there is a option about decrypt SIN, and then you can choose the kernel.sin you want to decrypt.

[Q] Instructions

Hi.
I don't understand these instructions from anybody on xda. Can someone help me? Exactly how to compile wpa_supplicant?
Instructions from developer
I had a quick look on this..
In order to make the wifi load you need to compile wpa_supplicant.
To give you a hint on this take a look at this commit from stockwell http://is.gd/Q4VaMi and you'll also have to edit libhardware_legacy just like this http://is.gd/CNVDrz so it loads wlan.ko.

Thanks for help.
No one can't help me?
Why don't use compiled wpa_supplicant?
Anyway, you can compile it with CM sources
