[Q] Weak/no signal - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I've got a Galaxy S2 that used to be locked on Vodafone AU but was unlocked with an unlock code from their website.
I've put a Telstra SIM card in and the phone worked flawlessly.
After I've put CyanogenMod (latest) on it. I hardly get any signal indoors as well as outdoors most of the time. Often it show no signal at all and only emergency calls.
I've tried different modems over the last few days without any luck.
I put a stock Vodafone on it again without any luck too.
My SIM card was replaced by Telstra already, seemed to improve a little bit, but its back to no working again,
I've put my SIM in another S2 and it had full signal this was in the same room where my phone doesn't show almost any signal.
I've seen lots of posts here and other forums with similar issues, but no one seemed to have a solution really...
Does anyone has any suggestions?
Regards

If you bought it from Vodafone either on contract or outright (did Voda even sell them outright ?), there's a fair chance you have an I9100T, which is slightly different from the I9100 so far as the output of the radio is concerned & the modems which work well with it.
Check the bits & pieces you got when you bought the phone (box, receipts, sticker on the phone chassis under the battery). If you do have an I9100T, it's time to try more modems; in particular start with modems bundled with stock roms released by carriers who sold the I9100T (in Australia, Israel, Thailand & NZ). If you try all these & still have no joy, try every & any modem you can get your hands on (there are dozens).
If you have an I9100, it's still time to try more modems, tho the last sentence in my previous para holds I.E try any/every modem you can get your hands on.
And as I've said to several people with similar problems on here lately, I'm (again) surprised that it's assumed this is a phone issue when everything you've said points to a carrier side issue, or at the very least the phone not playing nice with the carrier's setup (gear/spectrum used at individual cell) - I.E it worked for a while then didn't work.
You haven't found a simple solution because there isn't one. All you can do from your end is keep trying modems. This has been the case since the S2 was released 2 yrs ago.

[Q] Different modems - flying worldwide

Not long ago I flew from Oslo to Moscow and my phone had one of the latest GB-ROMs. In Oslo my phone worked like it should, but when I landed in Moscow I couldn't get any connection. Fortunetly I had several modem files on my phone and I flashed one of them and got connection.
This time with an ICS-rom (LP2) which is Russian I have no problems in Norway nor Russia.
How can we know if our phones with the installed modem version will work when we are travelling Wordwide? For us with rooted phone we can stack a bunch om modem files when we are travelling but for those who haven't rooted they will have a problem.
I can't beleive it should be like this. Or maybe my experience was out of the ordinary and a one time case?
You can't know for certain, apart from other users' experience with using various modems with different networks (or your own). Different modems work better with different networks sometimes. Fact of life.
If you've got a rooted phone, keep your modem collection on your SD card so you can flash them with CWM when you travel.
People without rooted phones, bad luck. They can talk to their carrier about poor reception or data speeds. Us who like to mess around with our phones can do something about it (try different modems).
SGS2 is no different to any other phone, some networks & in some areas you're going to have problems with reception/data.

Roaming Constantly

Hey all! I have a very odd issue with my SGS II i can't figure out.
I bought a SGS II from Telstra outright and rooted it, installed CWM, installed CM9 and had been happy for about a month. Last night i flashed a few different roms to try them out (being a massive MIUI fan). Anyway, after flashing a few roms and playing around a bit i realised my phone was no longer connecting to the Telstra network and the signal icon was grey and no apps could use data and only rarely would it check for messages, often getting 3 or 4 sms's at once.
So i flashed back to CM9 today and still have more or less a mp3 player since it refuses to connect to telstra.
I have tried many many modems including all of the telstra shipping ones and wiped before and after each to make sure they stuck. (An idea from whirlpool in my readings).
Also i have tried many different roms.
Can anyone shed any light on what is wrong? I should get full reception from telstra in my room, it being the dominant network in Australia.
Also, when i choose search for networks it just keeps saying it is looking for networks until you quit it, and i have full bars on the roaming network, presumably optus or vodaphone.
Thanks!
Okay, turns out i just needed to re-seat my sim card (remove and put back).
So yay! Fixed!

Signal problems - standard Orange SII

I'm having problems with my Galaxy SII, on Orange in the UK. There are huge problems with the signal. Bear in mind I have recently bricked the phone, but resurrected it with a short stay in the airing cupboard.
With the SIM in, I can get a decent signal at first, but this then drops away to nothing, pretty quickly. Sometimes, I don't even get the signal.
However. with the SIM out, I get a full signal for emergency calls. At this point, it looks like a network issue, with patchy signal.
However, I then swap the SIM over to my HTC Desire, and get a reasonable signal sitting at 2 bars now. Same is true outside where I had 4 bars on the HTC, and nothing on the Galaxy.
Any thoughts on this one? I am a bit frightened of calling Orange as I no longer have my insurance with them, and their repair department is a bit unprofessional - last time I called them, they started making an insurance claim on what was a warranty issue without even telling me, until they told me about the excess I would pay.
I'm running Gingerbread.BVKI3, version 2.3.4.
Thanks.

flash another modem , i recomand xxki4 , via CWM . use search button and type : modem , click on first link and you will find a lot of modems.
OK, got to the next stage of things - I can't flash a new modem using Odin, as my phone isn't recognising. Not even without Odin. I am getting the MTP connection come up on my phone, and it is charging perfectly well, but I can't get any access to it on the computer, not even as an external drive. Is this potentially a phone problem, or is this a software/drivers/hardware problem? I don't recall any permanent problems before it got bogwashed (occasional connection issues, but easily solved by disconnecting and reconnecting). If it is a phone problem, are there any fixes? I just want to flash the modem, not do a whole system reflash. The external and internal SD cards are still working fine.
And I will need step by step instructions to achieve this. Whilst I am good with computers, I tend to leave my phones alone to avoid invalidating warranties and the like.

[Q] Samsung S3 I9300 Signal Issue. H/W or S/W Issue.

My girlfriend has had a Samsung S3 (I9300) for a couple of months and has had no issues with it however she dropped it and broke the LCD . I ordered a replacement screen (Front glass, LCD, and digitizer) from eBay and fitted this without any problems. I tested all functions on the phone and it seemed to be working okay. The same evening my girlfriend went and run the update and went from 4.0.4 (I think) to 4.1.2 since then she has complained about signal issues which I have now witnessed myself. I wished she had waited a bit longer to make sure the phone was working fine before doing any updates as now I am not sure if this is a software related problem or hardware. There is no way to revert back to the older version to confirm software. I know one option on the software side would be to root it and install a customer rom but I have never done this before and even though reading through the forums the process seems to be easy I am a bit reluctant to do this just now.
The signal indicator sometimes shows a circle with a line through it, sometimes it shows a grey triangle with no bars in it and other times it will show a bar or two and even a full signal. I have noticed even without a sim in it that it can show a couple of bars of signal. I have not got this confused with the Wi-Fi signal. When trying to send text messages or make a phone call the following errors come up “Not registered on network” and “No signal found for mobile network”
Below is what I have done/checked so far
I have restored the phone to factory settings but as explained before this will only restore to 4.1.2. This time the only apps on the phone are stock apps, no additional apps have been installed just encase a third party software may have caused issues.
Her sim will work in any other phone. I have an S2 and have ported my number over from a normal sim to a brand new micro sim to try in her phone. Both of these phones are on O2.
I have made sure the IMEI number is correct and matches what the phone came shipped with.
I have double checked the APN details and these match what my S2 has. Although I am pretty sure this is only for internet and MMS and would not affect SMS and phone calls.
After check over the settings and restoring to factory settings I have fitted a replacement antenna which I also got from eBay. I doubt I have damaged the mainboard as all other functions on the phone work fine. (Touchscreen, Cameras, Sound, Wi-Fi)
For some reason I can get the phone to work at my house on both GSM (2G) and WXCDA (3G) although it seems to be more stable when it is on GSM. As soon as I leave my house and go into town (approx. 2 mile away) or over to my girlfriends (approx. 20 miles away) it will stop working. I have gone onto the O2 website and entered both of our post codes on the O2 network coverage checker and this reports that there are no services down in our area and that we should have a good signal.
I have come on this forum for some advice and hopefully someone can recommend what I could do next. I have had a little browse on the forum already but is there something I have missed? Should I root the phone and install a customer rom? If it was caused by the official update is there an a hotfix of some sort coming soon? Or is this a genuine fault with the phone? If it is a fault with the phone and it has not be caused by me I could try sending it back to O2 (where the phone was purchased from) or Samsung seeing as I can’t see any warranty seals so think I would get away with this.
Thanks in advance for any responses I get to this and I am sorry if I have rambled on and provided info that is not essential.
Flash O2 stock rom via Odin .
If that does not fix it its a hardware repair job and you will be refused warranty as you have self repaired .

In need of some assistance:I9300GSMH

Hello, First post here on Xda, Nice to meet you all.
I'm looking for some serious help with my new samsung galaxy S3GSMH International version.
Long story short, My girlfriend lives in germany, While on holiday there I purchased a samsung galaxy s3i9300 and was told it will work in any region any network due to being factory unlocked.
In germany I was using a sim card from VIVA mobile or something of the like and it worked fine.
After I returned home, I switched in my UK Vodafone sim card, A message then popped up saying, Please select sim service:vodafone UK/Vodafone UK prepaid.
So I chose Vodafone UK and clicked on OK, I thought everything was fine untill i tried to make a call and got, Not registered on network.
Now I have searched for days in all types of threads to get this fixed, I have tried flashing stock firmware with odin/emergency recovery Via Kies/Flashing modems/flashing patched modems/patched kernals/Ariza patch/Ariza patch Jb.
My Imei is fine and matches under the battery, The S/N also matches under the battery.
So I just don't understand it, If it asked me to choose which sim service surely that means it has some type of connection with the network? I have full signal bars too.
Is there anything else i need to do to get this working? Because I am at a loss, And I obviously can't take it back due to the shop being in germany
Any help or input is extremely appreciated!
