Hi all,
Is there any truth to VZW "throttling" folks' who are on unlimited data plans? I ask because I regularly tether my DNA to my macbook air. As soon as I start downloading a large file or use facetime, the connection with the Internet breaks off. I noticed that my speed would drop from 1.4gbps down to 700kbps shortly before the connection breaks.
I know that's rather anecdotal but the connection break does not appear coincidental, it happens every time within a minute of me using anything that requires a large amount of data.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike
I haven't notice while tethering, but I have noticed my overall speed has gone down.
I wonder if you call VZW and ask if you are throttled if they have to tell you?

Did you uninstall TetheringGuard.apk and Verizon Mobile Hotspot (wifirouter.apk) if using a third party or my preference, google wireless tether apk. Since you're unlimited you must be using a non verizon app. I recommend
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
Press menu and settings, set the device profile to HTC Rezound LTE/CDMA. Change setup method to netd-ndc master. Scroll down near the bottom and check to enable the routing fix. That's three settings total that you should have touched. Now grant root permissions when you press the big yellow start tethering button and give it a few minutes.
Verizon typically does not throttle connections (whether tethering or not) unless you are specifically abusing your connection. I have unlimited, and typically use at least 50 GB of data per billing cycle and have not experienced any sort of throttling.

Yes, this is true, though I didn't mention it since it happens so rarely.
Verizon can throttle you if you're tethering on their 3g network....by FCC law they cannot on the 4G network.
The OP was most likely in a 3g area since he went from 1.4mb to 700 kb...I'm pretty sure no one gets 1.4gig on even LTE lol
I believe Verizon's official 3g throttling policy is something to the effect if you are in the top 5% of data users and are on 3g on a cell tower that is congested or during "rush hour"so to speak, they will/reserve the right to throttle your 3g connection.
use a user agent switcher when you tether and they will never know its not your phone so you will bypass any type of throttle
i dont know anything about mac's but firefox and chrome have a user agent switcher that you can set on android (mobile sites) or opera for normal (full site) web browsing, gl nawmsayn

Pretty sure this is bad information. User Agent just tells the website what browser you are using so the page can be displayed properly for you. Changing your user agent in Chrome won't affect your streaming of movies in Netflix.
Hi all, I'm the OP, thank you all for your advice. I apologize I had forgotten to mention that my phone is not rooted.
From what I can gather, I was on a congested network (Midtown New York City), so that was probably the source of my poor data speeds. What bugs me is that I had 5 bars on 4G and my speed for first 15-30 seconds were around the 1.4gbps mark. So I can't help but wonder if VZW intentionally throttles down data usage on a congested 4G network, which I believe someone above had mentioned could be the case.
In any case, I'm back on the West Coast and my data speeds are back to a consistent "normal".

You do NOT have bars of data, the 'bars' are a visual reference in regards to the signal strength of the cellular connection NOT your data connection.

I have always wondered that, lol. Out of curiosity, does anyone have problems with 4g/3g switching like crazy? I am guessing that it is giving 3g priority. I have 4g available in my current area, however, my phone only wants to stay on 3g and will sometimes just flash onto 4g for a few minutes..

So I'm using my TBolt as my primary internet right now, as my connection hasn't been hooked up yet at my new place, but I'd love to be able to download apps that Amazon thinks are wifi only, like today's game. Is there a way to make the Appstore think I'm on wifi? Probably a stretch, but curious.

Just go ahead and get the app. Even if you can't download it now, at least it will show you purchased it and you can then download it once you get a chance to hookup to wifi.
Yeah i dont understand this whole Wifi only thing they shouldn't be worried about my data charges 4G is here and I've downloaded way bigger files over 3G.

What is funny is that my 4g LTE is faster than any WiFi i have been on lately. The only reason I even have WiFi at home at this point is for my TIVO and VOIP Phone that is connected to my home alarm.
would downloading through a proxy help? are they checking ip or connection type?
yeah... they should really disable wifi only for phones with 4G.
3G i guess i can see the argument but LTE is faster than most home networks.

Amazon has some apps that are "wifi" only downloads. Those will fail to download if you are not on wifi.
in settings in the appstore app u can change it to allow apps as big as 20mb to dl over cellular data. larger than that and u still have to use wifi. Still the default is really low (like 1mb or 5mb).
Why not just visit your local McDonalds or Starbucks or whoever has free Wifi and download the app? Heck, go outside, I'm sure there are plenty of unsecured networks around you can use

That is true, however, at this point in time, LTE is a very small portion of network usage compared to 3G, so we have to remember that when Amazon limits large downloads to wifi only, they are probably looking at the user base as a whole. That will probably change soon as more LTE devices come out.

Again, this is probably because they have to "play nice" with all the carriers out there, so they don't want to be accused of causing too much traffic on any carriers wireless network.
The Amazon app store is becoming more and more popular, since they offer a free app a day and since it's not "Google", they are probably making sure they don't get anyone mad by driving up bandwidth usage.

Don't forget 4G for everyone else is around 1-2 Meg and Verizon has the fastest LTE available. You'd probably need a separate Amazon App for VZW customers, but your right it sucks! I've run into apps like Co-Pilot that refuse to download anything unless it's via Wifi.

Eh.. I know you pulled that 1-2 meg figure from your ass. Sprint has the lowest 4g at 10Mbps, TMobile and AT&T are at 42Mbps.
Anyhow, this is annoying of Amazon to do. There should be a way to change or disable just like most other apps offer.

Please don't believe the marketing department. Show me an AT&T or TMobile device that actually sees that speed. While the 1-2 stated by the previous poster is false, 42 is equally false and I can't speak for sprint. LTE is superior to HSPA+ and wimax or the other carriers wouldn't be planning LTE rollouts in the future.
Back on topic, Amazon is just perpetuating the nanny-statism that is ruining this country. We have to be protected from ourselves. We can no longer be trusted to read our contracts and understand what we have. This is also helped along by lawsuit stupidity. If Amazon didn't prevent people from blasting through their data packages, some idiot would sue them. Thus the rest of us who can actually read and understand a contract suffer.
Love the speed on my 4glte (30mbps! WOW!), plus I do have unlimited data (grandfathered), so the only reason I use wifi is so that I don't over abuse the unlimited data every month, or if I want to save on battery life.
That said, wifi is extremely slow. I have 20mbps cable at home and I only get 2 through my phone, even when standing right next to the router. My laptop connects to the same network and gets 10!? Why is the wifi on these phones so slow (same issue with tbolt)?
Also if u have unlimited data how much do u use month? Are you afraid they might take it from u?

I've noticed the same thing. I have 35/35 internet at home, but when the phone is connected to WiFi I don't get anywhere near those speeds. I actually almost get better speeds leaving the phone on 4G even though I'm lucky if I have two bars at times.
Never have been able to find out why, but since I do have unlimited data as well (grandfathered) I typically just leave the 4G on and forget about WiFi.
My typical data usage per month is two maybe three gigabytes with moderate usage, but now that I'm on 4G it might increase some since I'll probably use Google Music more often.

I get 25mbps to my home and pull 17-22 on the phone. You may have a bad antenna. Also, speed test isn't very accurate. Your "speed" is restricted to what the server you are pulling from can provide. Also, you may have a bad/slow router. If it is dated, I suggest upgrading.
So long as you are not using exponential amounts of data, like 8-10GB, they shouldn't throttle you, and they CAN'T just take it from you.
I don't have unlim because I just switched last week. But I have the double data 4GB plan. Really glad I have that and not 2 gig because I am using an average of 2-3x the data that I did each day on my Desire before I switched. LTE just causes you to use more lol.
I wish I had unlimited because I would watch a fair amount of netflix over 4G
BTW, I have a Linksys E1500 Router.
I agree. You may have a bad antenna, because my Wifi speeds are just fine. I get 30 down and 7 or so up, so there's no problem there. Here's something I've noticed though: My wifi won't stay connected while the phone is asleep. It always goes back onto 4g for some reason. This happening to anyone else?
The only time i get wifi is at Starbucks or the library... and both places are show as hell. No internet(or even tv) at home because i am rarely home. So that being the case, i absolutely never ever use wifi period.
As for data usage, let's just say it's enough that a few people here have labeled it "abuse".

I use 10-20 GB a month and they don't throttle. They only throttle top 5% of 3G users and only on crowded towers and peak times.
low WiFi speed usually means your router is using overused channel (channel that many of your neighbors are using). WiFi Analyzer is nice free app that will tell you which channel to use.

That's about what I get too. I don't think it is the antenna, I think its the channel and or the bandwidth / modulation settings on the router.
I noticed when I turned my data connection of my WiFi seemed faster. My home network is maybe 15-20mbps and I usually get 12mbps in speed test. If I have data on WiFi is slower.

You might be in an extended coverage area, and like I stated above, SpeedTest is not accurate at all and completely dependent on the server you pull from. Try changing servers and I bet you see faster speeds.
a friend of mine said that verizon will throttle you above a certain data usage. So we decided to test the theory.
I setup an FTP from my home PC, and proceeded to DL , over 4g, my entire movie collection.
It was a little hard to do because the SD card (16gb one) kept getting full. I ended up with about 33GB of usage for that month. (This was using the droid charge a few months ago)
no overage fees, no throttling.
However I bet if i did that every month, i might see throttling.
If you lived in a high use location (like NYC) you might have gotten a warning.

I checked this "advanced" setting just for the heck of it and saw a setting for "best connection" or something similar. It seems by default this is checked off cause it says it uses more battery. Once I turned this on I doubled my wifi speed so it seems like everything is now working correctly.

I just called and got transferred almost immediately to level 2 tech support. They checked to make sure everything was configured properly on their end of the network before asking me to go to Manage Applications and clearing data in the Mobile Hotspot app.
I'll see how that goes. Next step they said would be Factory Reset, and then possibly switch out the phone.
The thing is, neither of these might fix it. It could be an issue in the software that requires an update. So if any of you have Mobile Hotspot, pay close attention to see if the 4G LTE connection drops out periodically while using MHS, and if so - dial *611 and complain.
Squeaky Wheel gets the oil!
So that didn't fix it. I so very reluctantly am going to try a Factory Reset. I can't stand the idea of having re-download all my apps and set up GO Launcher again, but this is infuriating.

Even if I keep the MHS for $30/mo to help ensure unlimited data and no red flags, once we have S-OFF, I definitely might switch to another tethering application if it runs smoother.

I had my laptop tethered one night just checking it out and it was dropping off but I thought it had to do with the screen going to sleep. Does LTE stay on while phone screen is asleep? I know that putting the phone in "sleep mode" is supposed to turn it off during the set hours which makes me think that it's not supposed to happen in the normal course of the day when the screen turns off.
I'm looking into cutting off my dsl if the 4g suffices for my internet connection at home.
I'm traveling for work and there is no 4g signal where I'm at and I had no problem with 3g tethering. No drop outs.

I can't prove this but I believe mobile hotspot is throttled. If you want to see for yourself, try this. Using mobile hotspot, see if you can stream a 1080 p video from youtube on your laptop. Chances are, it will have to stop to buffer every 30 seconds or so. Now download and install easy tether. Now, open 4 you tube windows with 1080 p videos on each 1 and a run em all at the same time.
The difference is freaking amazing. With wired tether this phone will run FOUR videos in high definition simultaneously. That is true 4 g speeds.
By the way running the speed test app I can pull about 26 down and 18 up. So I'm pretty damn sure mobile hotspot is seriously throttled back. Verizon claims wireless hotspot is 4 g, but I smell fish.

Interesting. When the Youtube buffers every 30 seconds or so, watch the 4G LTE signal. Does it disappear at all? Don't glance away for even a moment! It goes away and comes back quickly.

False alarm. =\ 4G started dropping out again after a while. Especially when clicking from Amazon Instant Video to Netflix and back on my Roku player. They did recommend trying 3G, so I'll try that before bringing the phone in for an exchange. Not excited about forcing them to manufacture another phone, but we need to press this issue, if it is indeed either a software issue or hardware issue. The WiFi and LTE Rx anetenna are right next to each other so that is suspicious!
Anyone else having this issue needs to start calling Verizon! The Tech Rep said he saw no record of this complaint for the Rezound in the system. So they are assuming it is just me.

I'll try that out tonight. Not sure if I was still in performance or if I had made the switch to normal by the time I tried it.

Does easy tether work in conjunction with mobile hotspot or bypass it? Sorry if that's a dumb question, first smartphone for me and it sounds like a dumb question to me.

Easy teether is for wired USB internet. Mobile hot spot is for wireless connections. I would highly recommend easytether , it works flawlessly with no problems whatsoever. Here are screen caps of the problem that everyone is having. Verizon is blaming HTC for it saying they don't show any problems on their side. Funny however, my Thunderbolt did it, my Droid Charge at times used to do it and now the Resound. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the app. I did a factory reset, trade sim cards, two tickets for the engineer coming back with no problems, a call from HtC saying phone was defective, a new Rezound with a new sim card and STILL it looses connection.

So... using a usb tether are you using your data plan and not your mhs plan?
And in order to have phone on charger and usb tethered you'd need a splitter then, would this affect the data rate if there is charging going on? Any reason why this can't be done? Trying to figure out how to use my unlimited mhs in place of my dsl and drop dsl. As long as it's reliable and they don't kill my connection with throttling I might do it.

If you have unlimited MHS, then you should have already gotten in on the unlimited data glitch. No splitter. Wired tethering uses data. Phone charges while (wired) tethering. You'll get FAR faster speeds too. (But you can bet they know you're doing it.)
I have noticed when using the MHS to connect to my epic 4g touch that if I leave my rezound ON, I wont lose the connection. But as soon as I turn the screen off the rezound, itll lose connection...

Makes no difference on mine, would lose connection any way.
Anyways, great news (sort of). HTC contacted me today and told me they are looking into it since they've been getting calls about this issue. Looks like it is a big problem. They will call me back from 48 hrs up to 10 business days. Glad to see this is getting recognized! Lets keep pressuring VZW/HTC on getting this issue resolved.
So with Verizon now having the share plans to eliminate the unlimited plans, thus squeezing more money out of us, I agree with the many on here that say they can have my unlimited when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. So with that being said, I used to be big on swapping roms with my Incredible, but never really messed with my Rezound other than upgrading to the Global RUU, unlocking and rooting it so I can tether wirelessly. Now that an LTE tower was recently put near my house, I can get 4g speeds. I want to cancel my broadband in the house save a bundle and just tether through my phone. I know with my Dinc, there were many Roms with data throttling removed or zip files out there to flash that could remove it. So my question is does VZW still throttle, and if they do, is there a data throttle removal for the Rezound out there?
They don't throttle 4g connections. At least that's what the rep told me. Theres no way to remove throttling from the phone. Vzw does it on there end according to congestion on the tower your connected to using your esn. And as soon as the tower is not so congested you get bandwidth back. But the rep told me if you have a 4g phone you don't get throttled, even if your only connected to 3g. That's coming from a rep over the phone, so take it for what its worth.

Texas is right.
VZW doesn't throttle 4g, and you have to be one of the top 10% of heavy users.
Also, throttling is done on their end, nothing to do with the phone.
Yeah I only get throttled in the day when I'm downloading massive files. I have downloaded 15gb torrents at night before and Verizon doesn't throttle me.

I would like to know why Verizon throttles 3G but not 4G. I know I use a heck of a lot more data when I finally got 4G in my area and being unlimited you think they would want to stop me at some point being I can not go over a number for them to add additional charges to me.

It's related to the terms of their FCC license. There's lots of restrictions placed on their ability to restrict use of the 700MHz band they use for LTE because of the terms of their license. They also can't restrict tethering on LTE, though they can still do so on 3G.

One of the apps that's rumored to be related is an app called TetheringGuard.apk and its in system app I believe.

Ok. So I have always just had 4G in my area until recently. I have the APN info to run unthrottled. I have an unlimited data plan and I use my phone for tethering my computer and my xboxs at home. Since it is now LTE now my UNTHROTTLED, APN switches on and off randomly and eventually knocks me back to the regular ATT PTA APN. I want to find a way to lock my phone to 4G only so I can stay on the unthrottled APN so I can at least have 2mbps instead of being throttled down to 500kbps a quarter of the way through the month. Which makes it practically impossible to play xbox games online or stream a movie, Download anything is a headache now. The worst part about it is even the LTE maxes out at 5mbps where I live anyways so it's not like I'm getting 21+ like I do in other LTE areas. Is there anyway around this or should I invest in an Android 4G only phone and just use it while at home? Thanks for any help that someone could give me.
Excessive data use always gets throttled. No way around it. I'm not saying "excessive use", at&t is.
They easily track usage by your sim card and IEMI, so APN settings don't matter.
Actually.....
Actually. With the APN I had it never got throttled. I was doing 46gigs+ a month. Never ever got throttled until it knocked me up to LTE and made my phone skip the un throttled APN.

46GBs? It's about time you did get throttled. 4G and LTE APN's should both be throttled APNs. Try the 3G APN.
I agree, save some bandwidth for the rest of us. I don't know how you haven't had your account closed down yet, or why you weren't throttled using a particular APN for so long. Must have just been network goofiness, because like rangercaptain said, that's not how AT&T tracks you for throttling anyway.
Edit: Moving to a 3G APN shouldn't matter either. Nor would being on a 2G or 3G-only tower. No matter what I'm connected to, I'm still limited to 5GB/month before getting throttled, because that's where grandfathered LTE plans are set. Doesn't matter if I'm actually using LTE or not, it's per-plan.
46+ Gb? Really???? Unbelievable! No, really. Unbelievable. You must mean 4.6 Gb because you'd be turned off, or at least you'd be getting communications from your carrier. I think either you are telling stories or you don't really know what you are talking about.
Johnus is 100% correct for AT&T. You get 5 Gb unthrottled per unlimited plan. Doesn't matter if you consume that 5 Gb using LTE, 4G, 3G, or string and soup cans.
I'm serious. I was getting months of 46 and more gigs without being throttled using one specific APN. The weird thing is now that yesterday I cut my phone on and all my APNs were gone except the default. They don't mess with me because the last time they tried to take me off unlimited for tethering I caused a big scene and kept on getting my call transfered up to a higher and higher management denying the fact that I did it and threatened them with a lawsuit. I already have a FCC complaint set up against them for throttling since it was never notified of agreed to a change in my plan. I was using a 4G APN that had what looked like corporate **** on it because I to this day can't find the info I had that I put in to get away with it. Now that it's LTE now it cuts 4G to completely off to 4G not allowing me to stay online longer than 15mins before it shuts down. That's all erased somehow now. My tethering file is deleted and I use wifitether app to do my tethering and have not been caught while tethering since I did that over 6months ago and for 6months I have been using about 50g a month

I guess they won.
It's far from over. I'm over 6gigs now and not throttled. Since using the tweakker APN. And I have been told if you file an FCC complaint they will let you run wide open once it gets filed with them. Usually take a month or two. They have so many lawsuits pending right now they can not deal with another.

..... And in my area, I assure you that my data usage is not effecting any of you. I live 30miles outside of Memphis TN. In the middle of nowhere. A year ago my phone only picked up in one spot in my entire house. The city is so small they banned any towers for going up because of the fear of radiation. I live around a bunch of ignorant rednecks that use Walmart prepaid phones and the only Internet they know of is Hughes Net and the local library.

Where can I find a full ATT APN list?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Really not sure I can take anything you say as serious. That said, if you get anywhere with you supposed FCC filing, you'd be the first. The issue has already been tested and AT&T is on firm ground.
This is how you can take me seriously. That shows my data usage.

Gonna post this months data usage with my Internet speed.. It never shows a tether is being used. It is unexplainable by looking at the phone info where the data is using. Which is also exactly what ATT gets, they have no clue where I'm using so much data.

My apologies. I gotta admit, the proof is in the pics. I know that ATT would normally go ballistic about this so I don't really understand why you're getting away with it. They really don't care what you use the data for. Normally, all they care about is how much data you've used in a month. You are getting away with murder, my man. Good for you!
It's because they have threatened me in the past. I threatened back and they backed off. But it was before I deleted the tether file and used wifi tether app. They busted me for tethering now they can't. Can't tell what I'm using it for. It's like they try to throttle me at certain times. Randomly now that I have LTE coming thru at my home. I was wondering how many others have figured this out. I guess it is just that I threatened to put a lawsuit on them.
