hi guys,
i've just ordered a htc hero on orange and i have 7 days to try it. I will receive it on tuesday, so whilst i'm waiting i have many questions that i would like help with. My computer knowledge is good, but with mobiles i'm almost useless, so apologies if i end up asking questions which may sound pretty straightforward to many of you.
1. The hero will come with orange firmware, but i assume its a lot slower than custom firmwares, so what is the latest and the best known firmware at the moment and what is the procedure on installing it?
2. Since I have 7 days to test out the phone, i want to try it with the latest firmware, but i'm nervous and i want to play it safe and need to protect the original orange firmware, so what is involved in making a FULL BACKUP of the orange firmware and if i decide i want to put the orange firmware back onto the htc, how do i do this?
3. Is there any risk involved in the above procedures where i could mess up the phone and not be able to fix it again?
4. Lastly, if I replaced the phone with the current latest firmware and at a later date Android 2.0 came out, will i be able to upgrade to the latest operating system without problems?
Many thanks again

1) why would you assume this? Orange dont put anything on there that slows the phone down, only an app for extra orange settings, which i believe takes you to a webpage...
2) read up on this, we cannot type it out every time. look for nandroid. But if you are trying it use the official update method from the orange site.,
3) same question, if you follow instructions you will be fine.,
4) It has been said by HTC that 2.0 will come to the Hero.... again this is plastered all over the forums and I do believe that your a lazy ass for not looking this up yourself.
Barry - it seems that rather than helping your simply having a go at me for asking questions. It might be a straight forward procedure for you, but I clearly stated that i'm a noob when it comes to the understanding of mobile phones. If you don't want to help then simply ignore my thread, rather than throwing insulting comments mate.
1. As for telling me that orange doesn't slowdown the phone, well many forum users tell a different story as they said there is a huge difference in speed between modaco firmware and orange's own version.
2. Nandroid is one of many and people have also mentioned sprite and mybackup which confuses us noobs as to which one is best and simplest one to use.
3. The 3rd question is not the same as no.2 because i'm trying to ask if there is any risk of totally bricking the phone, which might not affect you, but it means that i end up stuck on a 24mth contract with a bricked handset.
4. It seems your simply increasing your post count as you didn't read my question properly....I never asked if HTC 2.0 will come to hero....i asked that if i update to a custom firmware now, will i still be okay in updating to android 2.0 or could i run into problems because i have a different firmware.
Hi Mate,
There's a lot of useful info around these forums though i hate the 'High and mighty' approach a lot of people have around here, i dont know if they get a kick out of it or just generally like being unhelpful and worship the search god.
From my experience the search on this site is almost completely useless as you have to know exactly what it is you're searching for in the first place - and the point is that Noobs dont know what their looking for!
As for help with your questions i'll try my best! I have the Hero on Orange also - just had it for over a month.
1. The Orange Firmware doesn't have the bloat you'd expect - it's pretty much the same as the official HTC firmware bar the Orange boot logo. The reason Modaco is so fast is that it has tweaks and such to make it faster.
2. It's possible to do this - however you'll need to install a Custom Boot Image. I made a quick guide for someone else here :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4868874#post4868874
The custom image will allow you to do a Nandroid backup of the currently installed ROM and it can also be restored - however the Orange Rom can also be downloaded from the orange website too and installed if needed using the RUU that coms with it.
3. There's always a risk when flashing firmwares and such. If the instructions are followed then generally you should be ok but theres always the small chance of something unexpected happening.
4. If i understand the question correctly - then yes you are able to install the latest official firmware when it's released. Though i hear that the latest official firmwares have been harder to 'Root' - maybe someone else could clarify.
Anyway i hope these answer your questions - and i'm 99% sure you'll be sticking with the Hero - from my first Month with it, i find it's the best phone i've ever had. Yes i've even owned 'one of them iThingys'.
Just for info I'm running Amon Ra's recover Image 1.2.3, the Modaco 2.8 rom with the Teknologist 1.8 kernel.
Cheers
Paul
thank u so much paul. Mate thats all i was asking for and thank goodness someone like u is here to help us noobs on the forum..ur an asset to this forum..keep up the good work.
I've just received the hero around 5 mins ago and i'm gonna play about with it to see if there even is the need to update the rom and will let u know how i get on.
I'm worried of scratching my touch screen, so my question is that can i get hold of a cover or something that can protect it?
Cheers mate...much appreciate it
No worries mate - glad to help people, shame most people round here find it such a chore.
I've been using my Hero for just over a month and havn't protected it with anything. I always take care to slip it into an empty pocket.
From what others are saying the screen is made of gass and quite resistant to scratches - obviously scraping car keys down it isn't the best idea but i'm sure itll be ok if you take a bit of care with it.
I also hear the response of the screen is lowered if a protector is added. Take a look on the Hero Accessories forum, there may be a thread on there about covers / cases and such.
Cheers
Paul
my problem is that i have 2 mobiles in one pocket and that sometimes means i end up putting my house keys in the same pocket too. The reason i have to have a phone in my trouser pocket is because i'm deaf in both ears and unless the phone is ultra loud, i can't hear it, so the only alert is when the phone vibrates in my pocket.
People recommend either the flexishield or the invisibleshield, don't know wot to go for, lol.
Also the htc unlock button should only be the one on the most right, yet if i press home button, that too unlocks it..is there any way of disabling this or altering the button combination?
To be fair, most trousers / jeans have 4 pockets. If you want to scratch all of your stuff, put both phones and your keys in one pocket. If you want to keep them nice, use some of your 3 spare pockets. At the end of the day, it's a £400 phone - treat it as such and it will reward you by staying nice and shiny.
true, but its not just keys that can do the damage mate...i'm a cable installer and my work involves crouching, bending, lying down and the worry is that the trousers stretch and crack or damage the screen, so some case or screen protector would be nice to have.
Some people say that the touch sense doesn't respond well, but i tried to use the touch with its original screen protecter sticker which comes with it when orange sends it and it works fine.

Well it sounds like you'd need a case to keep it protected in your situations. I'm sure there's loads of options available. Either that or just leave it out of harms way
How are you finding the Hero now you've had it for a few days now?
@newbiephone Belt mounted case is what is needed.
hi paul mate,
i think the screen protection is the last of my worries
i have the following issues which i don't know how to address:-
1. Low reception - after reading up, i switched off 3g and this increased the reception, but only slightly.
2. contacts / people list - I have exported 350+ contacts from nokia e75 into a CSV file. Then i imported it into google mail and now i synced the HTC with google and this allowed me to download the contacts list. However the contact's numbers are all classed as additional "notes" rather than numbers. I hope i don't have to manually type in 350 contacts!
3. Is there a more simple dialpad that you can recommend? I hate the htc one.
Hi Newbiefone
Can I just say something here that will satisfy all your worries!!!
You wont be wanting to return the Hero after 7 days because it is a quality phone....
Before long you`ll be installing roms, themes, apps galore.
Plus we`ve all got Android 2.0 to look forward to too....
lol, thanks for the positive comments mate, but these are not worries mate, but problems that need diagnosing and solving. I'm sure one these are solved, my htc will stay with me hopefully forever! ROFLOL!
Oops sorry newbie my post was in relation to your first post!
Only just seen your last post..
I sync my contacts with outlook. Can you not import them into there with your csv files and then sync your hero with outlook?
I have seen may posts about problems with contacts and syncing.
To be honest ive not had one problem with it the way i do it..
If you have any more questions just give us a shout. Had my hero since the day it was launched on Orange.
Ah Newbie just been thinking there is a dialpad out there that ive seen. Just cant think of the name lol...
Christ maybe i should think before i type!
A question for one of your questions. Have you tried the latest radio firmware?
Mine and my girlfriends Hero signal are both poor but we do live an airaid shelter!!
Johnny boy your a STAR!!! If you were a girl, i'd kiss u, lol!!
I exported from nokia pc suite straight to outlook and then used HTC SYNC Manager to synchronise calender and contact its done it perfectly!! Thank u so much!
Right what do u mean by the radio firmware? I currently have the latest orange firmware and was adviced not to mess around with that firmware by someone on the forums as i'm still in my 7 days exchange warranty with orange.
Now how about that dialpad name?
LOL oh i`m glad it worked. I dont know why people have so many problems sorting out their contacts on here. Ive seen many a story about syncing problems. I just think this way is so easy i dont know why everyone doesnt do it this way. Ah well never mind at least ive helped someone.
Mmm best leave radio firmware then till you decide to keep it.
Dial pad now thats a tricky one i had a quick look and couldnt find it.
I`m happy with the stock one so i didnt pay much attention to it. Maybe i should have lol!

the reason many people have problems mate is because many import/export the more difficult way via CSV, then google then HTC and if the CSV is messed, then it won't work, but outlook seems to import data perfectly.
If you can't help with a dialpad program, how about like a contacts grid? The Favourites one takes up too much space and only can add a verticle list...if i'm gonna use the whole screen, then i might as well have at least 9 contacts or more at the same time, rather than 3 at a time.
Hi everybody. First of all I did not know where to put this thread so I decided to stick it in General, I hope no one minds.
Well I just got my Xperia X10 mini pro yesterday, it came from Spain as I bought it of ebay and locked to Vodafone Spain.
As a long Windows Mobile user, I am used to have to flash a ROM in my native language (PT or SK) as soon as I get the phone, because it's not like in the old days with the Nokias where you would just go to the definitions and change the language to whatever you wanted.
But apparently android is like that too. When I turned on the phone for the first time, I got a lot of language options to choose from. I selected Portuguese and it the phone had all the options in that language. That is why I wanted to ask besides de branding it, what are the advantages of flashing a ROM from a different country?
And now for the hard questions.
I ran the phone without a SIM card in it, but I want to ask. Every time I turn on the phone I get the language options to choose, no matter how many times I choose Portuguese, it just fails to remember it. Is that normal (remember I am running the phone without a SIM card in it, just for testing)?
Is there a way to hard reset the phone? (this expression I got from WM, I hope it's the same for the Android) And if yes, how? (always good to know)
This is an observation.
The phone could not see my WIFI connection, because it was on channel 13, I had to change it to 9 to be sure he would see it and connect to it. After that everything worked . (I hope new radios are on the way)
Overall I did not have much time to test the phone, but I did some web surfing, I went on youtube and it was not bad, considering the screen size (it is even smaller than HTCs Diamond I), and the keyboard made the experience much better.
The phone feels so light, it almost looks like a toy. If you don't know anything about it, you can easily think it's one of those low cost messaging phones, with no actual OS (it's a metaphor, as I do not consider some firmwares that come on phones actual OS).
But I hope it's one of those gadgets that everyone can use
Thanks for bearing with me, and please if you know answer, if not you can always comment, hehe

No advantage as far as I know, may be you will get a different set of bloatware depending on the region. but at the end, they all are crap and you will end up uninstalling (Or at least wanting to..) all of them.

I think it asks you just once for the language, as it stores the language preference in an XML file. try using it with a sim and see if it asks you again..

you can factory reset the phone, I'm not aware of any method that allows you to hard reset your phone. Although you can reflash it with SEUS, that will reset your phone to orginal form.

I beg to differ, Android is built on linux kernel, and you can use plenty of linux command on it, so I consider it as an actual operating system..
Besides, whats an actual OS?
The definition of an Os is - An operating system (OS) is an interface between hardware and user, which is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing of the resources of a device, that acts as a host for applications run on the machine.
According to that definition, android (or other mobile/handheld OS) falls well within actual OSes

I think you misread or misunderstood what I have said. I agree with you about Android. That is why I have bought it, even though it's for my wife
I said, or at least the message that I wanted to spread was that if you do not know anything about the phone, you can easily and mistakenly confuse it with some low end keyboard phones (and those ones do not have an actual OS), that are marketed like messaging phones and do not measure up to this one.
I hope now I am a bit clearer.

Yes you can easily mistake it as a toy , almost like the samsung corby series ( google if you dont know the mobile ) , but anything that runs Android quite doesn't feel like a toy because it Linux , its powerful , smart and the best OS around..atleast for mobile

When I bought X10 mini pro, I showed it to my friend, who happen to be a Nokia X6 user (8 GB) and a big huge Symbian fan. At the first sight, he wasn't impressed, said I wasted the money since I could have bought a Nokia X6 for lesser price. He said its just another fancy toy from SE, just like Xperia pureness (X5).
The next day, I rooted the phone, removed all the bloatware, installed useful apps and widgets, and last but not the least, installed ADW launcher. Customized it, and then showed him again, and he was blown away!!
All of a sudden Symbian looks like an OS from last century to him. Now he wants an Android phone.

That is exactly what I want to do to this one. I still need to get some reading first, as I am not sure how to remove all the stuff that Vodafone puts in it.
I lack the knowledge of Android, so I am not sure if you go to android market and download the things for free, or if you get it here and just install it on the phone (I sure hope that Android uses some kind of a cab file, that will let me easily install things on it).
So far, from my reading I figured I need to change the SMS application and the answering call one (as I read many people were complaining about those), and I need to get the task killing application so that I can save some battery life.
I was not able to find an explorer on the phone, so I have no access to my SD card (which was strange for me, as WM has it easy).
For rooting I will probably use the one click root (I hope it works for this phone).
If you could point me to the right directions, with the names and a place I can get the 101 applications from, I would be grateful, as my wife needs an END product, and not something like:
"Hunny here is your nice phone, have fun rooting it and customizing it to your needs."
Thanks a lot
PS: I have been looking for some examples of what I wanted the phone to look like, and feel like and I have found this on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpEbYiTiFdw&feature=related
I like how it looks and feels, and the only thing I would probably not want there is the last left widget with the stock market. Other than that I think it's almost perfect for such a small device.
Let me know what you think
Hardware issue(s): Three days into my new Lumia 800 I've experienced about a dozen total device freezes. The phone becomes unresponsive and the home, back and searchbuttons are dead too.
The problem is resolved when I use the screen off/on button.
I also have another problem, described in this thread. There seems to be a (large) part not secured inside the device. When shaking the device there's a distinct click/clack sound and you can feel the part moving around in the device.
I'm not sure if both issues are related, so I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced similar issues with the screen and touchbuttons going dead.
Same problem om Lumia 800
Hi, I have exactly same problem, with my new Nokia, it started behaving like that first time I started the phone. It is either HW or Windows Phone OS. I have retured it to nokia immediately, they have said there is no problem with phone?!?, they will hopefully install new firewire or OS or whatever and hopefully it will work when i get it. I suggest you that you return the phone that is not acceptable behaviour it should just work without any hacks.
Otherwise buy an Iphone or other more stabile phone, it seams that Win Phone is at least two years behind other phone OS....

Everybody can get a phone made on a Monday. Regardless of what OS it uses. Top me WP is more stable than both iOS and most definitely Android.
Maybe it will be fixed with new firmware. Don't know. But I would return it to where you bought it right away and walk away with a new one.
Here's the changelog for the newest 12070 firmware:
The new Lumia 800 update brings the following enhancements:
• Enhanced battery standby and talk time performance
• Battery capacity icon instead of question mark on top right of screen
• Improved bass in audio performance
• Soft-key illumination at all brightness levels
• Fixes for device performance issues including self-reboots, freezes and call-ending
But I would return it anyway and get a new one.
Hi
I live in Sweden too, and the phone is ordered online. If you open the phone from originally package you do not have right to return it(according to sucky Vendor), but according to the consumers right office I have the right to return the Phone get new or replacement. I have been in conflict with this vendor for 8 weeks now, as I do not get any respond from them about the phone.
Problem is with Lumia 800 from the start it should work directly. I could use that money I bought the phone and invested in something else for this 8 weeks.
I have had several android phones and hadn't have problem. My friend have IPhone, no problems there. That is my experience.
When I google for Nokia Lumia I see a lot of people complaining, and a lot of problems, and about stability I do not agree as Win Phone has not so many features as Android it should be more stable and it is not according to the all forums I visited.
But still that is my opinion and my experience.
We all have different experiences.
I come from Android and it always was a force close fest for me no matter what phone I had. Not very stable. iPhone I have never owned but according to surveys iPhone apps force close even more than Android app. And other serveys tells that WP owners are among the happiest of phone users. But let's forget about this for a while.
What vendor did you purchase from? I would consider making a post to www.fairshopping.se and let the company answer. Usually they want to answer inqueries there as it may make them look bad otherwise. Always worth a shot I have seen many people getting positive results after posting on that site.
Hey guys,
I have watched some report about a spysoftware which is installed on a lot of phones called "carrier iq", made by an company which is also called carrier iq .
They seem to collect data about everything, each button you press, each website etc.
It seems that only rooting a phone or a costum rom can stop that "thing" collecting data.
But until now it seems that it is running on Iphones, blackberrys, especially android devices an maybe others. Windows phone seems not to use that.
What do you think about that?
There are 140 MIllion phones with that da*** software running.
Windows Phones do not have the Carrier IQ issue.

Hi,
My friend is keen on installing WP 7.8. I would like to know if it is safe installing wp7.8 through navi firmware and any way to back phone contents?
PS I have used navi firmware before back in Nokia 5800 days. But lost touch since. If you guys can guide to tutorial that's fine.
It's Lumia 800 magenta color. Region India.
Thanks in advance.

You'll be able to find enough tutorials, just look for them. And no you cant backup. You've waited this long, you might as well wait it out 1-2 weeks more and get it through zune without having to lose your data. But yes, it is safe as long as you follow the instructions right
You can install using Nokia care suite instead of downloading from navifirm.
I installed 7.8 on my cyan (india) lumia 800 couple of weeks back and its running smoothly. I used navifirm and nokia care suit. Also there is a recent news that nokia is going to stop users from accessing navifirm, only some people with id/pass will have access to that.
Anyways, as far as my experience: It is safe to update to 7.8 and its amazing.

Here's a detailed guide on flashing your phone: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Le...okia-Lumia-800-Giffgaffers-guide/td-p/2891451
You'll have to reinstall all your apps. Your contacts will automatically get synced through outlook. And you'll loose all your messages, game saves. The music, pics and videos can be retransferred back through Zune.
More intelligent ROM?

Why ROMs are so brutal, whereas official ROMs keep data and apps?

It erases all your data because Nokia Care Suite is mainly used by technicians to recover Nokia phones...
I did "recover' my brazilian Lumia 800 with NCS, not need to use Navifirm. Everything fine
Sure you can. It is the same version that will be sent via Zune publicly at the end of the month (confirmed with a Nokia employee) and it's completely safe.
I installed it a week ago and it runs smoothly. Just do it with Care Suite, it's easier, and make sure it's the same code that is in your SIM card tray or else if it's an operator specific variant there's no update for that yet, you can install a CV version too. The firmware should be the same, it was for me. Good luck!

So you might be able to install a different variant OS version, but be still careful and use commons sense
The stuff I installed was this:
Code: 059N341 - doesn't matter, same hardware
Variant: RM-801 VAR FINLAND FI CV MBLACK - normal variant for Finland matte blacks
OS: 1750.0823.8858.12460 - 7.8 RTM
