[Q] Stock kernel - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched and can't seem to find any stock kernels to flash with mobile odin. I want to try a custom kernel but more importantly want a stock kernel to go back to without having to flash the whole rom.
Thanks.

No-one?
Is there a way to spilt kernel from rom?

Don't bump before 24 hours has passed. Against the forum rules. And if you search, your answer is easily found. You won't be spoon fed.

Why post if you have nothing constructive to add?
Just adding to your post count?
The second post was an additional question, but you are right I maybe should have edited the OP. For that I apologise.

EDIT:
I think i've sorted it, with mobile odin i can select just to flash the kernel from stock ROM.

If you look in a standard kernel flashable zip, kernel is simply boot.img

Thanks for your reply. If I just select kernel in mobile odin it picks that from the rom I assume?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

I assume so. I've actually never used odin to flash anything official.
But opening a kernel flashable zip in winrar or 7-zip and swapping the boot.img also works. Just got to be careful not to add compression when dragging it into the zip

Stock Rom

Hi guys
Is there a way I can find a stock rom and flash it using custom recovery? If so, where can I find the stock Tom in the first place? I've checked the internet and did a search but I couldn't find anything
Thanks

I think that you have to flash stock ROM by KDZ, cause original/stock ROM has different format, is not a .zip file which you can flash by recovery.

Well, I'm actually looking for a zip file that is flashable on custom recovery (preferably CWD). I'm unable to flash kdz files.

No, but readme
Read the link that veyka mentioned, quite comprehensive.
CF-Root is what I've used, its not difficult but ofcourse make sure u backup and follow the steps correctly.
There is another method using a program called One Click Root, google it. i tried it worked and rooted and automatically installed superuser, but it was weird when i rebooted my phone it was not rooted!, so i used CF-Root method.
I'm only guessing here sorry.
Update.zip from the stock recovery. Never made one to try if it can be done.
Are you not able to use Odin via your computer for the 1st root flash?
If you can then you can use mobile Odin for flashing without the computer after that. Eg. Download Odin compatible firmware/kernel/modem etc directly to your phone then flash using mobile Odin. No pc involved.
Good luck.

At the moment I can't use a PC, maybe in a week or 2 (if I'm lucky 1). That's why I searched for an app. Nothing worked right now.
I appreciate all of your help!

Can I use an update.zip on a stock ROM?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Its been a while since ive seen the stock recovery but I believe you can only use an update.zip with stock.
It's got to be created the right way though. Can't just rename a zip to update.zip.

Kernel help

Hi can someone help me please I flashed a custom kernel now I want to go back to stock kernel I been looking on here but I can't see anything thanks
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Reflash whatever ROM your using and that will give you back your og kernel. If you didn't flash a ROM and only flashed a kernel, pull the kernel from a stock ROM and flash using Odin!

Cheers for the reply OK I got stock firmware I open it but with one be the kernel as I see other files but not kernel

[Q] Replace recovery.img in zip

Hi.
I'm looking for confirmation.
I downloaded the latest cwm touch recovery from their site. It's a img file.
I'd like to flash it from recovery. Is it safe to replace the img from the zip file from another recovery with the cwm one?
It should work, but is there anything I need to pay attention to?
Thanks!

Just flash with mobile Odin
safer to download a flashable zip version of the recovery
True, but I didn't manage to find yet.

You do know their official app 'rom manager' supports clockworkmod installing AND updating and when u start it it shows you if you have the latest recovery mod installed?:banghead:

Yes I am aware of that. Too bad I am to cheap to pay for the premium version which allows the automated flashing of the touch version.

Touch version, in my opionion, is worse than non touch. Roms are for theming and fun, launchers as well.
Clockworkmod and RECOVERY states are for serious stuff, a wrong touch and u can damage your phone. Much better to have to press the buttons...

But yeah try to flash. The worst is you wont be able to flash it or ur clockworkmod will stop working. In that case get to pc and reflash older clockwork mod by following a safe guide....
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Used TWRP or CWM Touch on thousands of flashed never a problem.
Any miss hit is not going to damage your phone and i find with TRWP you are less likely to miss the correct sequence as you always hit the right buttons .

Just to answer to the original question, yes it should be safe. I have done so many times with twrp and it has always worked.

I forgot that that doesn't work for some reason. I'll try to find the stock ROM, if I can. The closest thing may be 2.3.6 though.

You can try it, but I'm not sure if it'll work. Unless you're asking me if you can flash 2.3.6, in which case, the answer is yes. In case something goes wrong, you may want to backup.j
Here is the stock U.S. - 2.3.5 ROM.

Note: this is the kernel and system.rfs only.
Note: original kernel did not support ext4.

Lol, I think that's what he downloaded.
Yeah, your right... The only reason, I can think of, that it wouldn' t work is if he ghetto lagfixed... I created that file and have used it plenty of times and it should work....

What ROM are you flashing back to stock from? If I may ask.
And are you still having issues getting it to load?

You should try booting to recovery and wipeing cache and data... You probably still got some jelly bean stuff foating around. Might want to flash a kernel too. Entrophy's daily driver if U.S; rj's if INT.
Any success because I'm in the same boat you are but just thinking about buying a new one. I feel like it's going to be extremely to complicated to fix.
