Hi guys,
At the beginning of this year, I flashed the phone from vr 3.0 to ics:-
Rom: ICS
And' ver: 4.1.2
Baseband: i9100XXLS6
Kernel: 3.0.31-462349 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 6 02:42:23 KST 2012
Build No: JSO54K.I9100XXLSJ
It ran okay, although now and again the phone would freeze for a couple of seconds, but then continue working fine. But over the last month it has developed the following problems:-
1. Freezes and reboots on a regular basis
2. On many occasions after reboot, battery goes from a good 90% to suddenly 10-20%
3. Even with a different battery from a friend's s2, the phone still does freeze/lock.
I have ordered a brand new battery (2000mAh) from orange, but whilst i'm waiting for that to arrive, I would like to reflash to whatever you can recommend. I want to preferably go back to the latest orange brand fw and see if that resolves the problem.
Could you please clarify the following for me?:-
1. How do i fully backup everything (excluding rom!!) and how do i restore it?
2. Is the latest Orange FW Version 4.0.3 which was released on jan 2013?
3. Once reflashed, how do i root it too?
Thanks

1. U can use Titanium Backup to fully backup all ur apps and their data. As for ur personal info (like contacts, messages), u can find many apps in the Playstore (like Super Backup).
2. Check sammobile.com to see.
3. There are many guides here on how to root ur device. Different firmwares have different methods. So I can't really say which unless I know what ur gonna flash.

Thanks very much immortalneo.
I checked the sammobile.com site and found the I9100PBVLPE_I9100PORALPE_ORA to be the latest firmware for my orange uk mobile, which i believe is ICS 4.0.3 fw. Now how would i root this fw?

Yes, it is the latest firmware. You can root it easily using ExynosAbuse (search again).

thats absolutely brilliant! thanks!
btw, i can't use titanium backup as the phone has not been rooted, so i'm using super backup to backup all apps, sms, contacts etc.
i will let you know if i have any issue
hi again mate,
i managed to reflash the original 4.0.3 fw onto the s2 and although this seems slower than previous ics, i guess i'll have to try it out and see how it goes.
i've ran into a problem with ExynosAbuse though. When i click on "root device", it says "FAILURE: Could not root device". Any ideas why? what fix should i use?
Also what is a fast firmware that doesn't have too much bloatware and allows a good battery life?
Hi again,
First of all, I would like to say thanks for all the help and advice. I really appreciate it.
After flashing the orange stock rom, I found that the phone was still freezing, rebooting and battery losing it's charge. I have now got a new battery for it and that has resolved these issues which i'm very happy about.
Unfortunately, the phone is still jerky and even my new budget ZTE Blade III seems to be more faster/smoother than the S2!!
I have tried numerous roms and they all seem to be jerky.
I want to know the following please:-
1. Could it be a ram/cpu issue?
2. What rom would you say puts the least pressure on ram/cpu? Can you recommend one?
3. How do i put on the recommended rom? Odin or a different method?
Thanks!
BUMP!
1) Maybe.
2) No. Rom recommendations/threads are forbidden here:-
A) Because there's hundreds of them on here already.
B) Your experience of a rom or kernel will not be the same as mine due to different phone setup & use.
B) Given how easy it is to flash roms & kernels/backup/restore with CWM once you've rooted your phone, there's no excuse for you to not try out a bunch of roms until you find one that works well for you. If you try a rom & you find you don't like it, you restore a backup of your previous setup in 5 minutes & either try another rom or stick to your previous setup.
3) The flashing instructions for a given rom will be on the first page of the thread devoted to that rom. Most custom roms are flashed via CWRecovery, a few have Odin flashable versions. Most stock roms on the other hand are Odin flashable, tho people here have also made CWM flashable versions of some stock roms.
The advice is to read read read read read read. Not doing so is the number 1 cause of busted phones on here.
Thanks very much MistahBungle.
You see, I've already tried loads of roms and I get the same problem, i.e. the phone apps work flawlessly, but there is a lag when i scroll through the home screens. I thought it might be the bloated orange stock rom, so tried villianrom, neatrom and many others. I tried to also clear the ram, just incase it's a lack of memory issue, but had no luck.
Can you recommend anything else?
*coughs*
Didn't read 2) eh ? No. I won't recommend you a rom. Because it may not solve your problems & you won't have the same experience as me.
Edit - Oh. Right. 'Other' recommendations. Well, the lag you're talking about (in my experience) seems to often be kernel related. Perhaps try a bunch of kernels rather than roms ? 'Clearing' ram will often make system lag worse. Android does a pretty good job at memory management, so there's no need to 'clear ram'. You may notice that Android often doesn't leave a lot of 'free' ram, this is by design. It tends to reserve free ram for 'itself'/system processes in case it needs it at short notice, this is somewhat normal.
sorry mate, i think you've misread what i'm asking...i'm not asking for a rom recommendation, but i want to know if there is anything i could do to improve the scroll lag/jerk effect?
Yep - read my edit.
Good idea, thanks very much. Although i assumed that a stock rom would have a good kernel.
Is it hard to install a kernel on an unrooted phone? FYI, I plan to install Neatrom (apps removed) it comes with Kernel: XWLSS-v5.00.4-PhilZ. Don't know if this is any good???
Some kernels have Odin flashable versions, some not. Personally speaking, I'd prefer rooted & flash via CWRecovery because its easy.
Can't speak for that particular kernel, never tried it. Never tried the rom either.
Cheers buddy.
Hopefully once i flashed Neatrom using Odin, then i should be able to root it.

FYI, u don't need to root NeatRom, as it is already rooted.
And Philz kernel is the stock kernel itself. If you want to try a different kernel than stock, try Siyah or Dorimanx.

sounds way too complicated to change the kernel as i've never done it.
if i install neatrom and assuming it's still giving me problems, how do i change it's kernel to the ones you've mentioned?

No no.. its not at all complicated.. just make sure u don't flash the wrong kernel, that's all (read instructions carefully)
If ur on NeatRom (which has a custom CWM recovery), its very easy:
1. Download the correct custom kernel (in zip format) from XDA.
2. Copy it to ur phone.
3. Boot into CWM recovery.
4. Flash the kernel zip (just like flashing a custom rom).
5. Wipe cache, dalvik cache and fix permissions in recovery.
6. Reboot.
7. Give the new kernel a few days to settle.

Thanks so much immortalneo. I know some of us noobs will bang on about the same issues, again and again, but it's just a jungle out there with the choice of roms etc. Also i want is the least bloated rom and smooth screen etc.
Now i know i've may have already asked this earlier, but immortalneo, would you know which kernel is known to have fast speed?

Hi all,
well, I've read the site rules and watched carefully the video... I fully admit that I'm a noob and I'm ready to live with this status for a while
Despite this, I'll anyway post my questions, and I'm really grateful in advance for any help.
I want to root my SGS2 because I would like to install some specific apps and why not to change the rom to have something more "serious".
My actual config is as follow:
GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band: I9100BULP8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 13
Built: IMM76D.BULPG
I'm really not familiar with all terms used in the android space, I read several threads looking for a rooting manual and found quite good stuff. My actual worry is that I'm unable to find something (cf_root etc...) to use matching with my actual installed levels, can someone point me out on a sure rooted stuff and how to.
I don't want to have my phone out of order, this is the reason for this post. As stated I got confused and got lost with the wording used, ex: don't use this rom because if you have the eMMC chip with VYL00M (my case) etc... That's why thanks in advance !

you can flash siyah from this thread :

Lol the poor guy ain't good with technical words, you see your current version of kernel probably has a serious issue called a brick bug, it renders the phone unusable and recovery is a hassle in case of soft brick, hard brick situation is unrecoverable. Install got brick bug app by chainfire and check whether you are vulnerable so you can be more cautious, installing cm roms and certain other roms are safe, before flashing you must check whether it is effected by eMMc brick bug, and do not perform any erase activity if you are effected by the bug.
Peace
Edit : If you are effected install via Odin only. And this bug is present only in ICS Roms currently, if you are in gb you are safe, and be careful about flashing stock ICS use safe custom roms which has eMMc Cap erase disabled.
Using GT - I9100
I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.
Hi,
thank you both for your answers, Siyah looks a good alternative. Is there a specific version to use ?
Is installing a CF-root a more straight forward process ? Assuming to find the right one...

Siyah is the best alternative for u ma8, as its brick bug free for sure and beeing the best kernel to root with gr8 success
u dwnld the tar file of siyah version 4.1.5 for S2 and flash the same by putting the file in 'PDA' section of 'ODIN' to root ur phone
u can google for lot of Youtube Video guides avilable for ODIN flash on ur s2
You can flash This from stock recovery (place the file in SD Card) and flash via stock recovery , then flash any custom Rom if you want to try JB , try NeatROM Lite v4.0 , after flashing this , you can just flash latest PhilZ Kernel v3.75 (Link in my signature )
Thanks for your help,
a last question (I hope) why the 4.1.5 version instead of the 5.0.1 ?
Stability issues ?
Have a good day

first root ur phone using v4.1.5 and then upgrade it to v5.0.1
i dislike the siyah v5.0.1..best to use siyah 4.1.5
so basically steps:
1. Install clockwork mode recovery(CWM) through recovery mode
2. Install siyah 4.1.5 by installing zip from sd card
3. now install any rom of your choice and enjoy
OK I am a NOOB too but need some clarification I just replaced my i9100 do to a brick bug so I gotta get this right. I just checked the replaced motherboard and sure enough it also has the bug SO, I need to know as it does seem quite clear already but only say 90% so to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR in order to avoid the bug I simply have to use siyah 4.1.5 and then I am free to flash whatever, GB + ICS + JB / 4.0.4 , 4.1.1 whatever the bug ONLY applys to my understanding (correct me here) with stock recovery and original ICS kernel.
NEXT NOOB question often ROM's pack in a kernel what things could bring back a dangerous situation. Flashing ROM's ? (maybe include a dangerous kernel or something ?).... 2: apps? can I ever factory data wipe safely again or with siyah after the previous protocol is it safe ? ?
:silly::silly:Also really Confused !?!?!?!:silly::silly:

Hey all,
just to let you know the status. I installed Siyah 4.1.5 using Odin as advised by Sun90 and everything went perfectly smooth.
Thank you !
I think my mext move will be first to install a good backup tool then to scout for other rom like cyanogen etc...
@futiless,
as I said using Odin, it's safe ! I read that dual boot is now available with the latest version of Siyah, that could be the answer for trying new roms while preserving a working one. For sure I'll test it.
Thanks again for your help

Hey there. I have my Galaxy SII for almost 2 years now, and remain very happt with it.
Thing is recently I upgraded from latest WanamLite ROM based on 4.1.2 JB to stock JB from Nordic countries.
My phone was somewhat slow before, but now I updated it's even slower. Opening apps takes longer than always did, opening up screen, clicks, everything! It's lagging a LOT!
I believe I did everything properly, doing all wipes, etc etc. It's running on around 550 MB RAM, so I guess it's ok, as it's always been near that for stock roms.
What could possibly make this happen? How can I fix? If I totally erase my cell, restore to factory settings and all that crap, would it help?
Thanks for any help!!!

Have you tried custom roms? I would recommend RootBox. It's very fast with loads of things to customize.
And I would recommend doing a full wipe.. You can use titanium backup to backup and restore your apps and settings
Yeah, I DO use Titanium. It's very handful!
By full wipe you mean the factory reset thing on settings?
I'll check on this ROM you talk about... thanks.

This wipe script was recommended to me too.....I'm just a bit concerned about it....I did some digging and found that the source for it was a forum for a different phone (can't remember which one).....the question was asked (in that forum) "would it work on different phones?" And the reply was "probably not as other phones have different partition structures".....
Can @strictly.mobile please confirm or deny this.....

Hello, first off i have read through loads of pages, been trying to figure things out for days, but the vast amount of info gets a little confusing, and just looking for a little more help, I have s2 i9100P XXLPH, running stock ics 4.0.3, i couldn't find a cf anywhere for it as the one i tried didn't work, it just stayed at the start up screen, so i downloaded the stock and flashed through Odin to bring it back to normal. I then managed to root it using ExynosAbuse, i then installed busybox. (not sure if i got it from google market or on this site) anyway I want to start trying a few roms but want to know the best way to go about this for my phone, Can i just download a SiyahKernel if so, should i download the latest SiyahKernel S2-v6.0beta4, also does this Kernel install cwm for me or do i need to download that and install it separately as i will need to make a nandroid backup. Sorry i know all this info is probably on the site but as i said it just gets confusing with reading so much stuff, i'm not new to custom roms as i put custom roms on my San Francisco and Huawei Ascend G300. Just need a little kick in the right direction
hi, i tried reviewing a bit about your device. i am using SGS 2 I9100.

you can click that link atleast to check the difference.... have you tried the DORIMANX kernel for ICS support.... have you read about the brick bug of SGS2, better to be safe than sorry man. atleast try to find the eMMC check apk and install it to your phone before flashing a kernel. though kernels for S2 now have the eMMC_cap_erase=0. atleast try to check if you have the super brick bug on your current rom. mine just had one before you know.... it was resurrected by JTAGG deadboot option.
http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ - here is the list of the kernels of dorimanx... find the one that has ICS support....
then if the kernel worked. flash the rom you want...
note: if you chose to flash the CM10.1, dont forget to download the dorimanx kernel 9.xx, after flashing the rom JB base, flash a JB kernel.

U can flash siyah v5.0.1, and CWM recovery will be installed too. Or u can flash Dorimanx as it also comes with CWM. It doesn't matter which, because after flashing a custom ROM, the kernel and recovery is replaced by those included in that custom ROM.
U can make a nandroid backup after flashing siyah or dori, and before flashing a custom ROM.

Re: Whats my next step
You can flash any I9100 ROM/kernel, you might lose NFC capability by doing it.
You've got a lot of Custom ROMs Threads in the Original Android Development Forum. You can check other users perceptions on the ROM in cuestion.
Check out the nuke scripts threads, those scripts may come in handy for clean flash as it wipes previous Custom ROMs leftovers.
It's always good to have Mobile Odin installed, enables you to flash stock ROMs very easily and in a safe manner.
You can get confused if you read a bunch of thread about a bunch of subjects.
I suggest you go from specifics topics to specifics issues related to that subject.
Q&A is a great place to learn about any issue you can get.

Hello all,
I've been waiting for my provider to release stock 4.1.2 but they are taking too much time...
Would you know which rom should I install to get the stock 4.1.2 and will I keep all my settings and apps ?
Also, does it have multiview and all the good stuff from the S3 ?
Lastly, I'm running stock 4.0.4 and emmc bug check says "sane chip".
Is there anything to know before upgrading to 4.1.2 ? Any trap or must know ?

So many questions! A simple search on XDA could answer them all..
You can flash any stock firmware that your device (and carrier, if any) supports.
You may or may not lose your apps and settings after flashing a new ROM (depends). But it is advised to factory reset (wipe data) when switching from ICS to JB. You can always backup and restore, right?
Since ur on 4.0.4, do not perform factory reset before flashing JB. To wipe data while on 4.0.4, always switch to a custom (safe) kernel. There is no risk while flashing via Odin though.

I think I know how to flash: DL mode + Odin.
I'm just extra cautious as the only time I tried to flash a rom, I didn't know about the brick bug and went straight into it...
Now my phone has been replaced and the chip is "sane" so it should be safe to factory reset.
I'll do a nandroid backup and a titanium backup but I would like not to wipe.

--> they haven't released it yet... How can I tell ?
What are the benefits to run a stock rom ? It is more stable ?
What is it with odin. Flash through cwm. Stock is good but if your wanting more then go with multi window. Alliance is very good. Don't go with stock. These m/w come in stock form too. I like the look of stock why I choose alliance but it also has the aokp bit too so best of both worlds. Then there's rom customizer. Great app that works brill with the rom. I use Omega, and its pretty good too.. I think Alliance is also good.. it really depends on ur choice.
I chose Omega because they have torrent download links.. In India, torrents are better to download without risk of corrupting the ROM.

Hi, I have given my wife my old white S2 after deciding to get a black one for myself (from Amazon UK). I had managed to root it and put on an aokp 4.2.2 rom (aokp_i9100_jb-mr1_build6 )which works great although I can't remember which site I used for the instructions. So I get my new black one and start thinking about doing the same...
I thought it would be a good idea to update it to latest stock version to start with but OTA update says my phone is up to date.
KIES finds new firmware but it hangs at 100% complete and goes nowhere.
Here are some numbers:-
Version 4.0.4
Baseband Version i900 BULP8
Build No. IMM76D.BULPG
This BULP8 version looks a bit odd.
I would appreciate some advice on how to proceed...is this a "funny" version?
Here's hoping, alfie

To Root you device, flash one of these Custom Kernels: CF-Root (the best) - PhilZ - SpeedMod
To install AOKP 4.2.2 ROM: Flash Omega v12 or Android Open Kang Project or JellyBAM
To install AOSP 4.2.2 ROM: Flash CyanogenMod 10.1
And don't forget to hit the thanks button
Also....while you're running 4.0.4, DO NOT wipe data, cache or dalvik....
Search "emmc brickbug" for why....
Sent from my Rooted, De bloated Stock JB powered S2 via PhilZ kernel and Tapatalk 2....
Yeah, you csn run gotbrick bug from playstore to check your chip. If it's sane you're good, if it's not I advice you to flash a safe kernel (siyah v5).
And then you'll be good to go for flashing CM and s#!t.
Also, stick to xda, not other sites.

thanks everyone I'll check it all out later today and report back. (My chip is "sane")

At times even the so called 'Sane' becomes 'Insane', so flash a brick bug free kernel like 'Siyah v5.0.1" from 'ODIN' to ensure safety on recovery wipes
I'm feeling a bit confused and dim...I've read so many threads...
I found these Philz files
PhilZ-cwm6-BULPG-ATL-3.99-signed.zip
PhilZ-cwm6-BULPG-ATL-3.99.tar.md5
The BULPG seems to match my phone - but which one do I use?
Or, if I going to use siyah I need more detailed instructions... argrrh..please help
First is for recovery second for odin
Send from my SGS2 I9100 with HassanROM and latest DorimanX 8.xx kernel

May be its time for u to do some Reading in the first place ( since ur confused for now to choose a kernel properly to flash )
Head to the link below and start reading the same for now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282
Good luck !
hmm reading I've done, it's understanding that is the problem.
I thought I'd managed it, I had it rooted with the Philz file and tried installing the aokp 4.2.2 rom but now it won't boot at all... I fear I've done something terrible.
I can boot to the "Philz Touch 3" recovery screen.
EDIT : Update Re-installed the ROM and now I'm up and running thanks everyone, alfie
