Stuck on what to do (root and s-off) after replacement phone - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ended up with a 2.09/3.16 combo. I've been rooting phones for over 5 years. I'm a bit stumped as to what I'm doing with this replacement phone.
I was heading down the Dirty Racun path. When it comes to installing TWRP, has the phone been rooted but not unlocked? Also, I don't really know linux, so, I'm not sure of the command to install TWRP. Can I just install via SD card or via Fastboot?
Also, is there a way I can just root vs. S-off? Not sure I'm going to run any roms. I think I'm happy with stock and root.

Need to unlock the bootloader in order to use fastboot, I believe. Need fastboot to flash recovery and root. Do the babyracun and then facepalm. That's the easiest. Use windows commands instead of sudo ./

Windows isn't supported by the developers because they got sick of what people were posting on the forums about it. Thetefor they decided not to help with windows. I used babyracun and then Facepalm on Windows 7 64bit. Helped another user do the same. Both successful. Babyracun method downgrades your firmware so that you can S-OFF.

I've used wubi on a dual boot machine which you can also run from a USB flash drive, it's the easiest Linux installation, just google wubi and feel free to pm me if you need help with the commands, I've got my replacement yesterday and s-off right away! Same combo as yours 3.16/2.09...
Edit: link to wubi: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer
You need to unlock and install twrp to start dirty Racun, if you know how to use CDM in windows you can use terminal in wubi/Linux it's pretty much the same you just have to read the post on unlimited.io, download whatever files you need, once you feel comfortable just copy and paste the commands and be patient, if you follow the instructions o the dot you shouldn't have any problems, good luck!

There is where my confusion comes in. If I follow the instructions on Unlimited IO, it says to run Rabies Shot and the install TWRP if main ver is 3.16. My hang-up is how to install TWRP. I got on their IRC page and was told they won't assist with the TWRP install.
So, are the instructions on Unlimited IO out of order?

Unlock using HTC dev unlock, you should have it from before, and go to team win website and get the recovery. Img dile from there and flash it on fastboot (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) rename the file you got from team win to recovery...

[Q] Root questions

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to root my Dinc 4G and I have a few questions before I do it. New to this so please bear with me.
Do I remove my sd card when I root? I know it wipes the phone and since my backups are stored on the removable card do I need to worry they'll accidentally be wiped too?
If I use Hasoon's toolkit to root, will I be able to later choose to go s-off? My computer is running Win XP since I primarily use my tablet and have never needed to upgrade to a non dinosaur computer so I can't use Racun's s-off method as it says it requires Win7. If I do eventually upgrade my computer, will I be able to achieve the higher level of control over my phone?
I hope these aren't stupid questions. Thanks for your help!
you cant use hasoons aio toolkit it doesnt work with the newest ota. back up your sd card bc it could be wiped. so copy and paste all your files to your laptop.

if you dont have access to win7 download ubuntu (linux) and use the dirty racun through that. its really easy to use/set up and if you have any questions about dr head over to unlimiteds support channel theyre really nice.
Just as reference for you I did the dirty racun method twice without any issues on Windows xp but you need to make your own decision on if you want to attempt it I'm not advising just giving you my experience.

Thanks for the info, guys! So I guess my next question is this, because I'm new to rooting and extended control of my phone, I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just remove bloatware, run better backup apps, and maybe flash a new ROM (probably Viper). I'm learning as I go, but would you guys recommend s-off for me considering I'm not looking to go nuts with changes to my phone. I'm nervous about bricking my phone because I went too fast so I'll slowly make changes as I understand more and more. Is this making any sense? Can anyone point me to a thread that explains the post root processes a little more newb-friendly like? I guess I was counting on using the toolkit to do most of it...

Using the FakeCID method, you're less likely to brick your phone, but you will void your warranty as you must sign up on HTC Dev, and provide your serial number (it's in the token).
Using s-off, you don't need to use HTC Dev at all and you gain much more control over your phone and can do bad things if you aren't careful...
That said, both methods are proven and both work well. I suggest to go directly with s-off and do your homework before flashing anything. (i.e. make sure it's for this phone and make sure its something trusted and always check the md5.
Good luck with whichever you choose. This is a very good community, so if you get stuck, there is usually someone to help.

I just want to amend this slightly. This version of the script has an option for just putting your phone into temp-root mode. This corresponds to step 12 of the unlimited.io instructions for DirtyRacun.

If you just want to start with having root on the stock ROM, then yes, you can flash a superuser package. There are two steps after S-OFF:
1. Install a recovery (either TWRP or CWM)
2. Flash a superuser package (either SuperSU [CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip] or SuperUser [Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip])
+1 to what md said, or just install a recovery and then viper as it already has superuser

The second part of your response is understood, but could you help me out a bit with the first part? i downloaded the file from the link, where do i go from there? I understand it has to do with the temproot process but does it do it automatically or will I still have to type the scripts? Thanks, you've been very helpful so far. I'm used to car forums (an area where I'm often the expert), where people are far less friendly and even less eager to help one another...it's a nice change.

When you reach step 12 of the unlimited.io process, extract Inc4GUnlockV5.zip to a new folder and open RunMe.bat. This starts the script. When you choose option 6 from the script, it will perform all of the necessary commands for you. Just follow the instructions that appear in the command window.
By the way, in order to use any of these S-OFF or unlock procedures, your phone must be on the latest update. Check by going to Settings > About > Software Information, and make sure you have Android Version 4.04 and HTC Sense Version 4.1.
Could someone explain step #8 in Unlimited.IO's DirtyRacun instructions? It says to RUU my device while in fastboot. My understanding is that I place my device in fastboot by powering down and then holding up or down volume (please clarify) and the power button. Do I simply connect my device via USB cable? Do I have to enable USB debugging? I ask because it mentions the debugging mode a few steps later. Once the devicem is in fastboot, do I simply run the ruu.zip on my desktop? What file from the zip do I use? I downloaded the zip and placed it in the file where i unzipped the DirtyRacun zip file. The rest of the process seems pretty straight forward but i am new to this so as much detail as possible is appreciated...basically, I need a step by step lol. Thanks.
Put the ruu on the root of your sd card you don't need a computer but when you flash the ruu your phone will be completely reset

You don't need USB debugging turned on until after running the RUU, as your phone will be factory reset during this process and you'll have to turn it on again anyway. I suggest running the RUU.EXE from your desktop with the phone attached, but you can do it either way.
IIRC, you don't need to be in fastboot to run the RUU.EXE method. As long as your windows drivers are working properly, you just need the phone connected.
However, later on when you do need fastboot, here's two ways to get there:
To get into fastboot with just the phone:
Make sure phone completely off (battery pull will really make sure)
Press and hold down the VOL DOWN button
While holding the Vol Down button, press and hold the power button until you feel the phone vibrate a moment then release the power button. Keep holding the Vol Down button a bit longer
The white HTC screen should appear, then the fastboot screen.
Another way to get into fastboot is to have your phone connected to the PC and use adb:
Open CMD window
Connect phone via USB cable
type: adb reboot-bootloader
Once you are there, you can plug in the USB cord connected to your computer. The "FASTBOOT" should change to say "FASTBOOT USB"
I followed all the steps and it said s-off was completed successfully, but now my phone has rebooted and there is not unlock ring or apps on my homescreen...i can swipe down to reveal the dropdown menu but other than that nothing...what did i do wrong?

How I Achieved S-Off (Windows 7 64 bit, HBoot 2.09, RUU 3.16)

First, I want to thank bigdaddy for his awesome root guide, FinZ for making sure I didn't do anything stupid, team Unlimited for DirtyRacun/BabyRacun and jcase for Facepalm
Remember, this method worked me. I can't promise that it will work for you, and it may brick your phone. Don't blame me if it happens! I just wanted to let everyone know what I did to get everything to work.
This is how I achieved S-Off on my Windows 7 64 bit machine on my Evo with HBoot 2.09, 3.16 Firmware:
Make sure you have the latest HTC USB drivers installed - delete whatever you had and install them (I used 4.2)
Find the latest drivers in this post
Make sure you have Android SDK installed as well as Java
I used bigdaddy's root guide to gain root (Thanks again!)
DO NOT wipe your existing OS before you achieve S-Off!!! This will make your life MUCH easier!
If you wiped your OS before achieving S-Off (like I did... oops) OR if you need to downgrade from 3.16 to 3.15, follow these steps (exactly what I did):
I used team Unlimited's BabyRacun to downgrade my RUU from 3.16 to 3.15 in order to use Facepalm to gain S-Off
Now listen, I used BabyRacun/DirtyRacun knowing that there isn't anymore official support for Windows and there is a risk of bricking your phone. It worked for me, but don't blame me if it doesn't work for you or if your phone bricks. I'm just saying, it worked for me on my Windows 7 64 bit PC.
Download all the necessary files for DirtyRacun/BabyRacun and follow the directions for BabyRacun (#6 A though F on team Unlimited's website)
When it comes time to type in some commands, they tell you how to type them in for Linux. For a Windows 7 cmd prompt, you use the same exact commands, but you simply remove the prefix "sudo ./" from each command then push enter. I simply copy/pasted each command into my cmd prompt to make sure they were correct.
Download the proper RUU from team Unlimited's website and follow the instructions to get it flashed to your phone. You should now be downgraded from 3.16 to 3.15
Keep following the instructions for DirtyRacun all the way up until the last step (#14 where they want you to run RabiesShot). I do not have Linux and didn't want to install it or use a LiveCD in order to get it to run. So I DID NOT use RabiesShot.
Lastly, I used Facepalm to gain S-Off and it worked perfectly - first get superCID (the commands are given at in the first post for Facepalm) then download the necessary files and use the Facepalm method. Boom! S-Off
I tried using Moonshine a dozen times, but it just wouldn't recognize my device and it kept hanging up during the process. Moonshine is really straightforward if you can get it to recognize your device though - so try that first!
Again, this worked for me. Give it a shot if you feel comfortable. Good luck!
Yea I seen you posting about this in the moonshine thread, glad you gained s-off, it is truely a beautiful thing, lol.

This method finally worked for me, after a few frustrating attempts. Many, many thanks for posting this instruction set!

Bricked my phone beyond belief!

So I've explored different options on XDA's site for returning to stock and I guess this is why I'm here. I screwed the hell up. I posted this on Phaded's How-To page, but I figured it would also be best to post this in the general Help & Troubleshooting page.
Here's the best way I can explain my issue. Someone please help.
1. My phone is COMPLETELY formatted. No OS now. Zero data.
2. TWRP is installed as my recovery.
3. I can fastboot and adb (only from the recovery obviously)
4. I moonshined the phone in order to S-Off
5. I tried the method to remove S-Off by Phaded
adb devices (verify device ID is listed)
adb shell
su
echo -ne '\x00\x00\x00\x00' | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=33796
exit

Click to collapse
When I ran the RUU, I got that error 158 problem. I couldn't flash the HBOOT. downloaded it several times and tried.
6. I flashed it with an AOSP rom and tried the RUU again. No luck.
Now I'm stuck. u_u I tried
adb push "file name" "file directory"
Click to collapse
so I can drop a zip file in the phone, but it seems to not work. Idk if I did it right. I was hoping to flash a ROM by doing that. smh.
Let me know if there's any other info I can provide. Considering the phone still turns on and I can still get to fastboot and adb, I don't think I'm a lost cause.
Thanks everyone!
UPDATE
I sideloaded a ROM (Carbon) and now I'm up and running. But I still can't RUU it! Figured this detail will help.
I'll keep reading and researching, posting my progress.
Thanks!
Its ok that your'e formatted the main concern would be 1. To be able to turn the phone on and 2. Boot into bootloader and recovery . It sounds like you are able to do both so the term "bricked" doesn't apply here.Okay so first obvious question did you obtain s-off also what bootloader are you on. Also what are you trying to achieve moving forward, going to stock or staying with custom roms, sense or aosp. There is only 1 ruu available for DNA and you need to be relocked to run and have fastboot drivers installed ala HTC sync manager.

(or something like that) it says my phone is locked.
2. What do you mean what bootloader? I guess moonshine, cause that's what comes up when I go to my bootloader screen.
3. I trying flashing the ruu and I get this (see image attached) which the suggested fix for error 158 was to flash the hboot 1.15 (or something). But I can't seem to flash it correctly. I can't even find straight forward instructions on how to do it.
Thanks for responding.
The reason I asked about the bootloader version and I'm not 100% sure about this so someone else may need to chime in is that when you ruu you are flashing firmware which includes hboot so if you upgraded hboot before doing s-off or otherwise went up a version then I'm pretty sure the ruu won't downgrade your hboot airgo the error message. Again this might not be true. At this point all that matters is that your s-off and NOT bricked so instead of toying with an ruu I would choose a stock Rom .zip to flash if its truly stock that you want. Your firmware should be up to date if you took 2.06. There is no ruu for 2.06.

It means you can write to any partition of your nand (internal memory). This means customs roms, kernels, splash screens, firmware, etc. When you are s-on it is more difficult, I can't get into why too many words it just is. If you're not s-off and you like flashing stuff look into it.

I'm not finding a solid explanation for error 158 which is disheartening - the best offerings are to change USB ports or restart the ruu. Like I said before you are fine on the software end, you can verify you have up to date firmware by comparing the latest below with what you have.
Baseband (radio) 1.01.04.0308
PRI 2.44_002
As for the hboot, how are you trying to flash it? In recovery?
The hboot needs to match the RUU. You need to find the original hboot . It is in a thread with hboot versions and radio versions.
Link to HBOOT please? and answering your questions
Could someone provide a link for the hboot instructions and flashing?
I think my problem is that moonshine screwed up my phone. I relocked my phone, but when trying to run moonshine again, it doesn't unlock the phone. It just says "WTF: What are you dong" and then it just stops and tells me to hit Enter to exit and the phone is still locked, hence why I think I can't flash HBOOT.
I try and flash HBOOT through recovery. I tried doing fastboot to flash it. Recalling from memory, I think the command was:
fastboot flash "file name.zip"

and then it says it can't open the file, unknown error. But I can't find any help guides or how-to's that explain the fix for this.
Thanks! Keep asking questions, cause I don't know what info is relevant.

Moonshine isn't working because you are still s-off.
My thread has the original hboot and instructions to flash it. You do not flash in recovery. You do not put it on your phone at all. Do not push the file in recovery. Read and follow the instructions in the stock thread.
---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:02 PM ----------
You're doing the command wrong or you renamed it PL83IMG.zip.zip
Please, go in my thread, read each step perfectly and follow. It's really quite simple.
Difference
Is s-off/s-on and being locked/unlocked two different things?
Screenshot
Also here Phaded. I tried different variants of flashing the hboot. I renamed it from PL83IMG.zip to HBOOT.zip. It's not HBOOT.zip.zip cause I know Windows 8 automatically appends the end of the file name with the type extension. As you can see, I boot to fastboot, then run rebootRUU, then I'm trying to flash from there. I got frustrated and tried different things, even unpacking the .zip and trying to flash the .img file.
Thanks for your contribution to the community Phaded.

Recalling from memory, I think the command was: and then it says it can't open the file, unknown error. But I can't find any help guides or how-to's that explain the fix for this.
Thanks! Keep asking questions, cause I don't know what info is relevant.

You need to cd to the directory the file is in, which should be where fastboot.exe is
So if it's in say C:\sdk\
Type cd C:\sdk\
Then run command to fastboot
BOOM!
Alright. Worked. I'll keep you all posted. No one really mentioned in any of the tutorials and how-to's that it is VERY important to make sure to CD to the directory. Like there are developers who say just add it to the PATH in Environment Variables. I figured it was enough, but hey, I was wrong.
Live and learn right?
Thank you Phaded.
So basically my problem was, calling the hboot.zip file is not included under Environmental Variables. I have to intentionally CD to that directory.
Hmm, I must have missed putting in the cd step for the hboot. I'll go edit it.

Root Help

Ok... so I have unlocked my boot-loader, what do I need to do to root my phone?
I am not S-off yet, do I need to be S-off before root is possible?

You don't need S-Off to root. Since you've already unlocked the bootloader, I suggest using this program to flash a custom recovery (ex TWRP or Philz) then select perm root. The application guides you through most of it. If you need more help with the program itself, check the main thread or one of the support links in the program.

That's the tool i used to unlock BL. I just wasn't sure what the exact steps for Root were. Which Recovery is the most stable of the 2? I'm most familiar with TWRP but if the alternate option is more stable then I will go that route.

I usually run with TWRP, but both recoveries are stable. If you look in the roms section, most require Philz recovery so if you want to flash roms I would go with that. And here is a link from the program that shows a step by step process of unlocking and rooting. Just skip the unlocking portion

Grab the img from the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2695709
Then you need to use fastboot to flash recovery. Hold shift and right click the data folder of the toolkit. Select open command window from here. Then type commands listed below in order.
adb reboot fastboot
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img(rename twrp img to this)
fastboot reboot

Hey btw I really appreciate all the help you've provided me. Might not be rooted right now without it. I do have one more question, what are the benefits of S-off?

S-Off allows write permissions to the firmware, radio, and bootloader partitions. Some roms, like the GPE ones I believe, require S-Off, but most stock sense roms do not. You can also sim unlock with S-Off. Those are the primary uses, but someone feel free to chime in if I missed something. This is my 3rd day with the M8 lol
There's also this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2718626
twrp 2702 from official site is newer that the 2704 unofficial. grab img from official site
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
IF all your wanting to do is flash roms then no need for s-off...if just learning and are leary of a brick stay safe with s-on....Theres always a chance when messing with partitions that are locked with s-on
S-Off is good for preventing brick in some situations, of course people still manage to brick their phones with s off, but to achieve S-Off you have to be familiar with adb and fastboot commands. If you required the toolkit for root, ie you do not know how to use adb and fastboot commands, I wouldn't recommend doing it until you are familiar with that. There are several guides, take some time to read and you should have a good start.

[GUIDE] S-Off, TWRP Recovery and SU on the HTC Droid DNA

I recently got a HTC Droid DNA on Verizon and it's been stressful getting to the point where I can install custom ROMs from stock. More so than on any of the previous HTC devices I've owned. I've had to glean information from different sources very carefully to achieve this since the majority of the guides out there are outdated, misleading and even brick-bait. This guide is meant to help the recent converts to the Droid DNA go through this process smoothly and safely.
If you follow instructions TO THE LETTER and CAREFULLY and meet ALL the prerequisites for every resource on this post you should have not problems.
Credit goes to the owners and developers of all the resources following most notably beaups, fuses, WindyCityRockr and jcase. These guys have made our device much more powerful and fun to use. None of it is mine. I am neither a dev nor a coder. I just know how to type in basic, decent English
As usual, following this guide is voluntary. You are responsible for your bricked device. Turn on your brain before your proceed. Your warranty will be voided. I suggest you read through the ENTIRE guide and follow the links to all the resources listed before you actually attempt this. If at any point in any of the guides you realize you do not have or have not downloaded any of the resources listed, make sure your get EVERYTHING you need before you proceed. Your best bet is to have a working connection on both your device and computer while you do this. You will need ADB setup and running properly. Pay close attention and note when you have to change a file name and WHERE you need to put the file on your computer before every step.
If that scared you, read no further. Thank you for stopping by.
If any of that excited you, welcome. Proceed.
1. Make sure you actually own a HTC Droid DNA from Verizon Wireless. Not a clone or a lookalike or a butterfly. Make sure ADB is intalled and setup properly on your computer.
2. Start by following (STEP BY STEP AND OMITTING NOTHING. NOTE THE PREREQUISITES) Beaups guide to achieving S-Off using firewater here http://firewater-soff.com/ I followed the guide to gain temproot FIRST and after that followed the steps that apply to a rooted device. I'm not sure it says this in the guide but make sure you copy the temproot and firewater files to your ADB folder immediately after you download them. This guide allows you unlock your bootloader WITHOUT HTC Dev
3. Follow Phaded's guide to installing a custom recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318159
You can get TWRP's latest recovery image here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/dlx Once again, omit nothing. Meet all the requirement before you do a single thing. Download every file and check the MD5 before your proceed. I renamed the TWRP recovery image to "recovery.img" since that is easier to type in a command line and copied the image file to the ADB folder on my computer.
If you have followed every instruction to the letter, you should have S-Off, an unlocked bootloader, root, custom revocery and SU.
4. If you like, you can download the WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit, select your phone type, wait for it to download the appropriate binaries, confirm that it recognizes your device in ADB and fastboot modes and you can use it to perform various operations including update your recovery, issue ADB and fastboot commands and flash a new ROM. You can find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437614
5. Find a ROM of your choice and flash to your heart's content :victory:
Congratulations.
Once again, I take no credit. All I wanted to do was consolidate information that was scattered in different sources to make this easier. Hope this helps someone out there.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this method a few days ago but you made it a bit easier for me (because spanish is my main language).
I can't wait to get my droid dna. This will be my first htc device so I'm going try this method. Thanks a lot!

Firewater takes care of that.
I share your frustrations. I'm going through that now, because only now have i decided to root my phone after almost 2 years of having the phone.
I must ask, would these instructions work with the latest OTA?
Yes, they should. Make sure you use the latest version of Firewater though. Once Firewater does it's thing, you're basically home free.
I can't get firewater to run on my insurance replacement. I tried all the methods on firewater's page.
After running the last command it doesn't bring up any prompt like step 5 says

Are you on 4.09.605.5? That one has the anti firewater patch. Try sunshine. It may work. theroot.ninja

I had the same issue on Windows. I tried numerous Windows machines and had the same issue as you. But once I got home and plugged into my linux box, I was s-off and unlocked within minutes. Try a Linux system instead of Windows. And make sure you are S-ON or firewater will not do anything.

On a stock 4.09.605.1 using Windows 7, I was able to use firewater by following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2742127 . To address any problems that may arise, read the entire thread.

I will have wait and see if anyone can crack the latest update. My daughter had my phone the other day and brought it to me because it rebooted. She allowed it to update not knowing I didn't want to let it
