Has anyone noticed when you turn on your screen after a long period of inactivity... It seems like the Wi-Fi reconnects. Is the a Wi-Fi sleep policy or maybe a bug... Or it's just me?

HTC phones have had WiFi issues like you describe in the past where WiFi turns off when screen is off even when you set the policy to always on. I hope the One doesn't have that bug.

If you have Power Saver on, the WiFi will go to sleep after a long period of inactivity...

FYI there are two power saver modes the normal one on your status bar you can check off and on. And there is another for network connections under the battery options in settings.

I have a similar issue with my HTC One and I posted it on the General HTC One Q&A forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41259406
I contacted HTC Support a couple times, and these are their suggestions:
1. I understand perfectly how annoying this can be. I ask you to please follow this troubleshooting. Let me assist you. First of all please go to All apps > Settings > Battery or Power, and disable Fast boot. Then, please go to All apps > Settings > Developer options, and enable USB debugging. After doing this, please perform a Cache reset. This process will delete unwanted and temporary files from your phone. It will not mess up your personal files. Just follow the instructions on the attached file. Please keep us up to date with this problem. (Tried, no difference)
2. To start, we can try to boot the phone into safe mode to see if there is any difference. To start, press and hold the power button until the power menu comes up. Then press and hold on the Power off option and a popup will appear with the option to reboot into safe mode. From there, test the Wi-Fi for a day or so to see if the issue continues. You can exit safe mode by rebooting the phone normally. (I didn't try this, but instead I did a factory reset, no difference)
3. Go to Wifi Frequency Band and select 2.4GHz (I am trying this now)
Alaris, I hope this second setting you mentioned is the one I am looking for to prevent this. Will test it out tonight.

Easily accomplished with an app in the Market called Tasker. It's over $6 but worth it to me. There's also Locale, SettingProfiles, etc but Tasker seems more feature-rich and more actively dev'ed.
When I was not rooted I was getting great battery life using Juice Defender, spend the little bit of money to get the Pro version. It will come on at a time you select to search for gmail or MMS as soon as 15m or every hour, it also has a night sch where it never lets the internet connect. You can also block apps from reaching the internet which I did often on App that wanted full internet access (yea right), it will also turn off WiFi after screen off if you select that as well. It has a ton of options and like I said was getting great battery life while lettting it manage my phone. It will also reconnect to the internet as soon as you screen on. So there you go Auto everything.

Your phone can do that by default if you go to wireless settings → press menu button → advanced settings → disable wifi on sleep.

If your connected to WiFi it will use less power than 3g or 4g, its when your not connected and its searching for a connection that it eats up battery. I toggle WiFi on as soon as I'm home or around WiFi and off as soon as I leave.
Thanks guys fir the info I will try that

My Galaxy Player 4.0 drops wifi whenever the screen is off for say 15 minutes. This of course bugs me as I use it partially as a wifi phone. It works fine as long as the screen is on (either continuous use, or by acquiring a full lock from the power manager), but once it's off for a bit it drops. Is there a way around this? I've tried the usual wifi lock/keep alive apps, but to no avail. My router isn't the issue (a NetGear WGR614v9) as it does this on all others as well. Thanks ahead.

Have you checked your advanced wifi settings? (press menu while in wifi settings to get there). There is an option in there called "wifi sleep policy", try changing that to "never".

Super big thanks, I have never pressed the menu key when looking at the settings.
similar problem
I am having a similar problem, wifi shuts off when the phone ISNT plugged in, and the screen turns off. Tried the fix suggested here, didnt change anything.
What I have noticed is that my old router didnt have this issue, got a newer (and better?) one, and this started.
had this problem with my G2, and now mytouch 4g slide.
any help would be awesome, thanks.

The answer is quite simple. Go to .... Settings, find Wifi, click on the WiFi Settings NOT the On/Off Switch...when you're in that screen click on your phones Menu , Advance , and adjust your WiFi Sleep Policy.
Sorry...its called Keep WiFi on during sleep...

Is anyone else having this issue? Every time I wake the phone from sleep I see the wifi with no bars, then a second later it is full again. I found a thread where One X users were reporting the same issue. I have it set to always on and even have checked the increase wifi performance check box as well.
Also, sometimes using the bookmark widget the phone won't load a webpage despite showing a strong wifi connection, I have to turn wifi on and off to correct this
Must be an ICS thing because my Touchpad does the same thing.
On a side note, my iPhone does the same thing too.
in your wifi settings hit menu and click advanced. there is a setting to set the wifi not to turn off during sleep.

I said in my original post I had that set already to always... the mneu says "Keep wifi on during sleep" I have it set to always
Seems to be a known issue if the phone goes to sleep for an extended period of time wifi will disconnect regardless of the wifi setings. We will have to wait for htc or rom dev's to fix the issue.
If you get the Power Saver Settings app (free) from the market, you can access hidden power options in ICS. Two of which are "Manage my connection when screen is off" (which may or may not apply only to network data) and "Turn off Wi-Fi if not connected." Perhaps try those settings.
My WIFI was shutting off and it is sometimes a bit bumpy reactivating it every time I wake it.
So I tried setting that setting to Keep WIFI on always while asleep.
WIFI is MUCH more stable now when waking the phone.
However, it seems to be using up battery much more quickly too.

i'm having the same wifi issue with my evo lte. I even changed these settings you mentioned and the same thing has been happening for a couple days. guess we'll have to wait on htc or devs for a fix.
i changed the ghz or whatever on my fone and it seems to not die out anymore after an hour of sleep
i have the same problem which prevents me from getting email and some other notifications on time. hope htc can fix this.
Same thing happened on ICS leak for 3D. Mikey finally fixed the issue in MeanRom.

i was going to create a new thread... but found a 9 month old thread I previously started... I'm having the same wifi issues still.... since the recent update it has gotten worse. Often times at home I'llw ake the phone from sleep only to see the wifi is not connected.... so I am missing notifications/emails while it is sleeping.
I don't notice this problem occurring at work, so I'm guessing it may just be an issue this phone has with my router (Linksys WRT54GL)... but I'm not even sure what router settings I should change.

I've been try to extend the life of my battery, and one of the things I have done is set the SETTINGS/WIFI/ADVANCED "keep WIFI on during sleep" to "never".
I make this change, but most times when I go back into the settings later on, it's changed back to "Always"
Anybody offer a clue as to why this might be happening?
Thanks.

no idea mate it shouldn't do as i have mine set to never and it stays like that, have you been flashing ROM's or anything like that maybe that could explain it!
No, not really.
The only thing I've done is rooted it. Apart from that, It's still got stock Samsung Rom on it.
Just checked again, and even tried setting it to "only when plugged in, but after 15 mins or so, it's back to "always" again.

For anyone else who might come across the same issue.
After doing a factory reset, and putting apps back on one at a time, I found out it was DoubleTwist Airsync, that was changing the "WIFI sleep" option.
Apparently, the developer knows this, but wants it to work that way.
So it's now gone for me
But you won't lose too much battery on an 7 hr sleep with the always on setting.
I go to sleep with my S3 on 98% and wake up with 92-94% battery left even with received messages from 3 email accounts and other notifications.
<------------------------------->
Sent from my S3 using Tapatalk
I keep mine on always. I lose 3% during an 8hr sleep and it'll automatically connect to my carrier data when my network is not in range. Sure beats turning it off and on a handful times a day.
Weird is that WiFi is active in either option you shoose during sleep. Even if you choose NEVER, open your battery use stats and you'll see that WiFi was active all the time during sleep. I cannot understand why is this issue so underrated here on XDA forums. Or is it some kind of misinterpreting from my side???

Yup afaik, choosing never will produce a wakelock to check the phone state and keeping it on will cause it to constantly scan even if connected to a network. Both choices will eat up battery.
I see many threads suggesting to just manually turn it off, preventing scanning, wakelocks and syncing all together.
