Hey all!
Just started this thread to explain something about SOD and phone SHUT DOWNS by itself.
I was NEVER BEFORE have these problems, like SOD or SHUT DOWN phone by itself, till now. I sure that it was related to one WIFI program, what I downloaded yesterday(Unlock With Wifi). Today I activated the app and I have phone SHUT DOWN by itself, like 3 times in hour. If I disabled the app, I solved the problem(for now I already UNINSTALLED that app).
Now I sure, that our SOD and S.DOWN problem not hardware problem, but SOFTWARE related problem.
I want to say you all, who have SOD or S.D...., look what app you have installed(what can use wifi) or in phone settings and try several times to configure your wifi(one of most: dont but your wifi to sleep, when screen is OFF), untill you solve you problem.
If you too know some examples, from you experience, then share with us here!
THX for reading!
Hope it will HELP someone.

I'll try if turning off wifi will help. It should if this is wifi related problem.

Hey!
Like I sayed, just try different things with WIFI settings. I think turning OFF wifi, will solve the problem, until you turning it back(when you have the problems). We will see, dose it solve the problem, if you turn OFF WIFI.
CHEERS!
You got the nail on spot. I was also in the same impression with SOD. Till now I'm not able to Figure out the app which cause this. But yes this is software issue rather than hardware. I also read else where that the SOD cause because of the lower voltage supplied to processor during sleep with which its not able to get itself up from sleep. Not sure...
I have a app that turns the wifi off when I lock the screen (dont remember which one of my apps!) so I havent experience it for awhile.
Sleep as an droid has a feature that shuts down the sleep tracker at a certain procentage (I chose 20%), instead of shutting the sleep tracker down, it shuts down the whole phone. Both of the times that i got SOD my phone had 20% left of its battery, so it was pretty obvious what caused it.
Sleep bot tracker is a great app if you forget to shut down your wi-fi before going to bed. Make it a habit to track your sleeping time, in the same time ull make it a habit to turn you wifi off. It has a built in function that shuts off the wifi when u start tracking your sleeping time. This app does not bring you and SOD.
What, but the general advise to sod had always been to check wifi always on...

I noticed that this problem is only for those who are using the older firmwares including XXKPH or the ROMs whose base are 2.3.4 KPH.
Haven't encountered this problem in the Samsung July 2011 release of 2.3.3 (KPN). But I guess, this is a good post for those who are still experiencing this.
For now, I'm just happy with KPN (that's why I'm not as active before here in the forums).
Before I flashed to 2.3.4 KPH, my Wifi worked flawlessly.
Now my Wifi reception is extremely limited (I have to be in direct line of sight to the router within 2 meters to be able to get a stable connection)
and
I get those dreaded SoDs (sleep of deaths).
My question:
Is it possible to flash only the modem file of 2.3.3 to try whether that works?
If yes, will my current system be wiped if I only flash the modem file?

If you don't use the video chat in Google Talk, then why not just flash 2.3.3 KPN?
The only new feature in 2.3.4 is the video chat in Google talk. Most bug fixes are now in the July 2011 release of 2.3.3 KPN.
Yes, I'm contemplating to do that.
But as I've spent a bit over a weeks time to set my system up, I would like to know if it's possible to just flash the modem without touching the already working system.
edit: I see KPN is a single file flash, so I won't be able to flash only the modem. Ok, backup and downgrade it is.
I've only experienced SOD once... But I always have wifi off. Just on when I'm going to use it. Afterwards I turn it off and good bye SOD issue

Hey!
Dont know exactly, but I think that you can restore your system settings and other system things, with TITANIUM BACKUP. Backup the ALL SYSTEM DATA in batch menu. Go to TITANIUM BACKUP>Menu>batch. Pick: backup all system data and RUN THE BATCH. After that, flash you ROM(what ever you want) and try to restore all system settings from TITANIUM B.. Ofcourse, what ever happens, I suggesting you do NANDROID BACKUP from CWM recovery, before you start anything. If nothing works(or **** happens), you can RESTORE ALL FROM NANDROID BACKUP.

Update: I flashed 2.3.3 KPN and did a factory reset.
The SOD problems are gone now,
but
the bad wifi reception still remains. (Connection to router only works within an extremely close range)
If I cannot find a fix for this problem I might try out a froyo firmware.
Did anybody have a similar problem? Would really appreciate some hints.

Hey!
I think its not ROM-s problem. Try look your Router settings and phone settings. I think something is not right in PHONE or ROUTER settings. Not seen this kinde of problem YET, with ANY ROM. Try to look.
One question: dose you not DROP you phone or similar? I seen little problems can happen, even nothing SERIOUS was done(like speaker, wifi and other HARDWARE problems).

Hello,
I became a proud owner of S3. As it usually happens to me there is the problem. Namely, from time to time problem happens to me when I'm using any web browser or anything that requires an Internet connection. Say for example Opera. I'm browsing pages and suddenly ... BOOM ... 3-5 second pause in the connection over WiFi (energy saving is off and in WiFi settings - I did it via code, in the service menu). Sometimes Internet connection breaks when I'm browsing menu or writing an SMS. For example: I browse the menu and suddenly I see - WiFi stamp disappears and after a while there is info about that phone is connected again. This is the first problem.
The phone is lying, WiFi operates in the background. When I Pick up the phone and when I'm clicking home (or power) button I get the lock screen and. .. freeze. Phone is disconnected from WiFi and only time the phone reconnects to WiFi I can unlock the screen.
On what ROM were the problems? On the Stock LF2, ROOTed LF2, Omega 7.1 - 9.0 and AOKP Milestone6.
And also it does not work automatic refresh of weather (at 1 h interval) on stock widget (the Samsung weather widget).
Sorry for my bad English.
Why couldn't you have just set your wifi to never turn off in settings, wifi, advanced.....it's practically the same thing....I wouldn't be messing around with the service menu. I would wipe data/factory reset and start again bud but this time, stay away from the service menu as it's for technicians and phone repairs etc I've not once touched the service menu....

I found the same problem ever since I upgraded to LH3 (the latest official release at this moment). The lock screen is frozen if: I had the WiFi Switched On, screen off either manually or timeout, then disconnected (say if I walk away from the wifi service area). When I press Power or Home button to wake the device, the lock screen is frozen.
Seems no freeze if wifi remains connected. Seems no freeze if wifi power saving mode is off (disabled via *#0011# (but setting won't stay if unit is power off).
Did both Cache wipe (didn't do factory reset) but makes no difference. Tried "never turn off" also makes no difference (probably because it will turn off anyway when connection is dropped)
The upgrade seems worser than before...
Any hints please...
This seems to be common but not always the same fix, my wifi constantly drops out and reconnects immediately (ruining any downloads/streaming) , i have tried the service mode, factory reset, different kernels, sleep time, static IP's, JB vs ICS Roms / Stock roms, you name it i have tried it and it STILL is doing it. Weird thing is..dont think it dropped out and reconnected when i was stock and unrooted, but as i said, tried stock rom and to no avail
Any ideas?
Bump

Hi, I am having the same problem again after not having this problem for a month or 6.
I qas having this problem on my note when on gb and now on cm10.1 but the problem never occured in an custom ics or jb rom.
So I recommend; use a custom ics or jb rom to solve this problem
Cheers,

I have this issue on my galaxy note N7000, and only recently for like a month now and on various different ROMs all JB. Any updates on what the cause could be?
Go full unrooted stock and send the phone in for warranty repair. It's the smartest thing to do if a problem persists after lots of ROM switching and factory resetting.

That's would be the smartest thing to do, indeed. But... Warranty expired centuries ago.
Any clue what is causing this not uncommon problem?

Try visiting a(not crowded) place with public Wi-Fi, and see if the issue persists.
If it starts to work fine, get a new router, preferably with 802.11n support. If you buy a N compatible router, check all of your Wi-Fi capable devices for N support, and if one of them doesn't, make them N compatible(if it's a computer, get a new N compatible Wi-Fi card or USB reciever, if it's something else, well, you can't do anything else other than buying a newer version of it with N support, or not using that device's Wi-Fi feature at all) because your router will operate at an older mode even if one of your devices doesn't support N.
I am having a peculiar issue. My Wi-Fi drops out and then reconnects every 30-45 minutes or so. I have the latest version of the ROM, flashed the boot.img in the thread, but it still doesn't fix my issue. It doesn't matter how far I am away from the signal, it just drops out temporarily, and then reconnects. I can't explain it. Other than that, it seems to be working great, but before I rooted and flashed, I never had any issues of any kind with the WiFi.
Also, it may be worth noting that I don't know for sure yet, but it may also turn on the WiFi automatically even though I have it set not to. Sometimes when I am out and about, I'll get a popup saying that WiFi networks were found nearby, do you want to connect etc...
Any help will be appreciated, I love this ROM and can't see myself going back on stock but this is a pretty cumbersome issue...
Re: WiFi Issue On Venom
Have you tried it out on other routers?
And fir the asking to join networks, there is a setting in wifi>advance for that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
About the only thing that I haven't tried is another router, but the other devices on the network don't seem to be having any issues. Then again, it is an Airport, so...Yeah, I won't fully know until I get a chance to test it elsewhere...
But I know about the advanced setting and have it disabled. That's why I'm wondering it its something in the ROM or something that I did wrong that it keeps trying to come come back. My guess is that it's disconnecting the mobile network and resetting it, just as it is doing on the WiFi...
Update
Just in case someone else runs into this issue, the problem was with an app that I used to change my host name. It would intermittently interrupt my connection trying to do that. I uninstalled it and edited my build.prop file the old fashioned way. The issue didn't have anything to do with Venom, just the fact that I had rooted and tried new things.
Thanks for your help!
This was the app that caused the issue: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tiranodroid.change.hostname

Can you please go to the advanced editing options and change the name of your thread and place "Fixed" in there so people can reference it, if need, and what app it was. Thanks.
Hey
I own an S2 i9100, using CM 10.1 (latest stable). I haven't made any ROM/kernel change for as long as the stable came out.
Yesterday out of nowhere, my phone started boot looping, and I have no idea why. The phone boots completely and after a few seconds just crash.
I've looked at the logcat during a crash and couldn't make something out of it.
I've read the last_kmesg and couldn't find any leads.
My biggest clue is that I can totally prevent this from happening when I shut down the network (both wifi and GSM). A few seconds after one of those start, the phone reboots.
Bluetooth tethering for internet access doesn't crash the device. It sounds weird, so: Are there any operations that don't run on BT and do run on other types of networks? I might be able to narrow it down this way.
Also, I'd love to hear other suggestions, but I don't want to hurry up and wipe the device just yet.
Thanks!
Asaf.
Asaf try to flash another ROM and test network again to try or it was ROM related hardware related or something with baseband

Hey guys, I've had this problem ever since android 4.3, had it on 4.4.2, and after trying liquidsmooth's 4.4.4, the problem still exists. Wifi keeps dropping to LTE, and if I try to toggle wifi back on, the toggle switch "hangs" for a moment on the "on" switch while greyed out, and then automatically switches back to the "off" switch. Only after some time passes, sometimes taking several days, does the wifi randomly switch back on. Does anybody else have had to deal with this problem? And how were you able to resolve it? Thanks in advance

Hmm sounds like a Rom problem. Does anyone else installing Liquid Smooth have that issue? You should post in the Rom's thread and ask..If so you know your answer..
Another thing you can try is swapping some system files.. Post back here if no one else has the issue..

Update: it seems my issue was hardware related, specifically the two gold contacts inside the cover and the two points on the back of the phone weren't making good contact. After cleaning the points and securing the cover firmly my WiFi issues seem to have disappeared for now. So if any of you are having similar issues, make sure to check the WiFi antenna contacts on the back of the phone
