So I have a rooted GS2 which I no longer need because I recently upgraded to the HTC One. My friend was interested in buying it so I decided to do a factory wipe rest to clear all my data. I did this through the system settings within Android. After doing that I've seem to have broken the phone. Now when I attempt to turn it on it only makes it to the Samsung screen then goes black. I notice very faint "blips" on the screen, like very dim flashes. After doing some research I'm not sure how to proceed. Does anyone have any tips on what I can do to possibly fix the issue?
Sometimes performing a wipe data/factory reset from within a running system using the system settings menu can cause problems. First try booting into recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset from there. If that doesn't clear the issue, you can flash full stock firmware via odin.

So I'm flashing my buddy's Metro Ascend. I got it rooted. Flashed CWM Recovery 2.x.x.x. (The common one, .5.1.8, I think). It hangs if I try to format the cache, period. Hangs during factory reset, wipe cache and format cache. I stupidly flashed anyway and it seemed to work, but after a reboot, the entire system seems broken. Force closes left and right and the Launcher doesn't load. It still received incoming calls at first, but now it doesn't even do that. I'm not too familiar with troubleshooting this particular phone and my friend really needs it fixed. So please, someone help me? (No lectures or flaming please, just advice. I'm not looking for motherly scolding about my irresponsibility )

Probably need to wipe the phone clean and flash rom again. If cwm is not working good try Amon Ra.
There's also a system format file floating around that you can flash in recovery to wipe your system clean.
Thanks. Never heard of Amon Ra but I'll look it up. The inability to finish the wipe data/factory reset kills me. I know my way around a Captivate with my eyes closed, but this is all goofy to me.
Still open to suggestions if anyone else has something to add. Easy way back to stock? Suggestions for a good rom/mod to flash? (Currently attempting Icarus 1.0)

I just experienced some weird sh... stuff.
I was having problems with my phone (Modem did not power up error) I had previously rooted and flashed CM7. So I SBF'd back to 2.3.4 and did my phone's Factory data reset. This was the second time I'd had the Modem error so I wanted make sure it was a very clean build before doing anything else.
Here is what happened:
Using the phone's Privacy Menu I reset all factory data and wiped the internal memory card.
-> This seemed to work fine and the phone looked to be clean from factory. (Original metal X wallpaper and all the verizon poop available)
Then (because I was paranoid) I booted into Android Recovery mode and did the User Data Reset / Factory Reset and cleared the cache
I did nothing else after this, just rebooted.
When the phone started my Wallpaper from my CM7 build was set as the Wallpaper and my wifi instantly logged onto our password protected wireless router. I had not changed ANY settings. I had not even connected a google account. Other than the wallpaper and wireless router settings everything else seems to have been reset to Factory ... but obviously something is not right.
Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Obviously something is persisting from my CM7 build or perhaps from my Eclipse Build before that, and obviously I'm supposed to clear data before installing anything - which I thought I did!
Little help?
Are you saying you did the factory wipe through the settings "after" you SBF'd? That's kind of what I gathered from reading your post.
If it is acting funny, I would SBF and start from scratch. I've never tried the factory wipe from the settings. SBF, root, CWR and flash.
It just seems like something else was pulled in there when you factory wiped from the settings. Make sure to load 2.3.4 if you are going back to CM7. Start fresh.

Yes. The error code I had was preventing nandroid recovery and proper booting so I SBF'd to 2.3.4 FIRST and then to make 2x sure that I was "Stock" I used the privacy menu Factory Data Reset. (Not the recovery mode Factory Data Reset.) This worked. Then I went to make 3x sure and cleared my cache and data reset through Stock Android Recovery; that is when it pulled in old settings.
I am just kind of flummoxed as to why Stock Recovery Factory Data Reset / Wipe Cache would pull in old data that was not stock.
craptastic
So it happened again tonight.
I encountered the same "Modem Did Not Power Up (2)" error after losing all cell signal and rebooting.
I SBF'd to 2.3.4 and still my old wallpaper and wifi settings were still there.
I thought that SBF reset all you data to the original Factory state?
I am following Moonshadow's SBF guide.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get my phone 100% back to stock?
When you sbf, somewhere in the setup when you first start the phone is a setting to backup and restore your settings. Anyway, are you sure that's not what's happening? If that setting is selected, your old settings are backed up to Google and will be automatically restored after the rom is first booted.

Don't enter your Google information right after wiping. What's happening is it's restoring all your settings.

Galaxy S II GT-i9100 was running on OXYGEN for a while (don't even remember the exact version). Now stuck at boot screen (green "flickering OXYGEN" screen, for those who are familiar with this ROM) after a routine battery change. Can boot into recovery fine, but recent backup was done long time ago... so looking for a solution with minimum data loss. Did anybody run into anything like this before?
I'm not sure if the problem is phone or ROM specific, but posting it here first anyway. Could be a general Android problem/solution, I guess...
Would appreciate any advice or references! Can help?
stuck at boot screen, OXYGEN, worked before, broke after a while, GT-i9100
The only things you can try other than a factory reset are:-
*A dirty flash of the rom you're running (unlikely to work, but try it anyway)
*Flash a stock rom with Odin. No, this will not wipe your phone/cause data loss. This has a fair chance of working but you still might end up with bootloop after & need to do a factory reset regardless. In that case, you're losing data; no way around it.
... more details
Thanks for the quick and constructive advice, but after tinkering with it a bit more tonight, it's clear that the problem is with the "data", and not with the "system" or "boot" itself. I can get the phone to boot by recovering only the "'data" part of the previous backup, using the advanced recovery option in the CWM recovery. Also I can back up the "frozen" latest configuration and then restore it to reproduce the problem.
Any additional suggestions/ideas based on this? Could it be, for example, that SMS app or any other app crossed some kind of limit storing its data and cannot initialize anymore? Is there a way to "'repair" the data.tar file from the CWM backup?
Additional details:

Apologies for bringing up an old topic.
Basically I stopped messing with this phone ages ago and plan to buy a new one.
My S2 was softbricked after trying to use clockwork methods with a semi current rom.
I used the app that verifies my phone has the bad chip.
I managed to get it back to a semi-normal state but now I just want to use odin and flash it back completely stock
I also want to do a factory reset since I plan to sell it. Is there any way to do this?
I just want to stop reading about this since it is an old phone and I have exams coming up. Can someone advise me of the simplest method to turn the phone back to stock + erase all my data, and not brick it in the process?

tell me more about which rom & kernel do you have running on your sgs2 right now and i might be able to help you
try considering triangle away zip file to remove the traces off your phone being rooted ever
and wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
format intsd
mount& wipe preloads
step wise -
1) Open Chainfire's Triangle Away app and press "Reset flash counter" to reset the counter and remove the triangle. It does not matter if there is no triangle already.
2) Do a nandroid backup using Clockworkmod recovery if necessary (to get to it; turn off your phone, press the power button, volume up button, and home button at the same time and hold it down for a while). This is done so that you can restore your original OS like I would want to after getting my phone back from Samsung if you're restoring it for that sole purpose.
3) (Mandatory) Wipe Data/Factory Reset in recovery menu. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, YOUR PHONE WILL BECOME STUCK ON THE "S" LOADING SCREEN. You also should wipe the cache partition and the internal SD card. The internal SD card in case you have any directories which may link you to rooting your phone, such as clockwork mod.
4) Restart into Download Mode and plug your phone into a windows computer.
5) Open Odin , click PDA, choose the STOCK kernel. Make sure that F. Reset Time, Auto Reboot and the PDA checkboxes are checked and NOTHING ELSE.
don't forget to hit thanks if i helped solve your issue

Folks use the terms "soft reset" and "hard reset" a bit liberally. Both typically refer to simply rebooting the phone (either within the OS, or with the button combo, respectively). But sometimes people will say "hard reset" to mean a factory reset.
Try a factory reset, if you haven't done so (of course back up any important personal data first). Or download the RUU and run it. Again, this will wipe user data, so backup what you want to keep before running the RUU.
I ran the reset through the OS. Is that considered a hard reset or factory reset? Now i tried going through the stock recovery using the buttons and wiped cache and wipe data/factory reset. It seemed to clear the bootloop problem with wifi. Is there a difference doing a reset through the OS vs through the buttons? Thanks for your help.

"Reset phone" in Settings is the same as a factory reset, and is same as doing it in recovery. Although keep in mind that "factory reset" is a bit of a misnomer. All it does is wipe the user data (/data) partition. It doesn't do anything to the current ROM/OS installed; despite popular misconception that it will somehow "revert" the OS if its been updated.
The term "hard reset" is a term that is used a different ways by different people. So I try to avoid use of it altogether. HTC specifically uses the term "hard reset" to be the same as factory reset:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/465049.html
Others will sometimes use the term "hard reset" to mean simply a forced reboot using the device specific button combo (in the case of the M8, holding down power and vol up).
In any case, you've already done a factory reset and wiped cache. So the only other thing I can suggest is running the RUU. To do this, go to the following webpage, and follow instructions near the bottom under "Manual system update instructions":
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
RUU is pretty much the nuclear option, it will rewrite a complete software image (ROM, radio, recovery, bootloader, etc.) to the phone, and possibly/hopefully repair anything that may be causing your issue.
