You will brick your phone only if you do a factory reset from recovery with STOCK 4.0.4 kernel.

When u flash a firmware via odin, it replaces the current one completely, so it doesn't matter which build u were on.
Bricking occurs when u
- flash a firmware not meant for ur phone
- flash a wrong kernel
- wipe using temporary cwm on 4.0.4
- flash a corrupted firmware
- interrupt a flash by pulling the cable or battery drains out.

Ah, you missed one major point(which usually happens) wiping using stock recovery in 4.0.4 also bricks the device, but this kind of bricking happens only if you're effected by the brick bug there's an app in the play store which will check whether you are effected by the brick bug, and believe me most of the emmc chips are effected (for the record my S2 isn't effected but my tab is).
The important thing to remember is that you should not use any kernels having emmc_cap_erase value set as '1' that includes the stock 4.0.4 kernel and an old version of Siyah, so no matter the recovery if you are on these kind of kernels and if you wipe when your device is effected... Voila expensive paperweight.

Yes, I did miss that. Thank you for pointing it out.
The possibility of brickbug while on stock kernels has been told by Entropy, but I haven't seen many people report it. So I guess I forgot about that.

Does it matter flashing firmwares via odin or with the phone?
I know that the custom roms are made to be zip flashable so you can install them with the phone, but aren't the stock firmwares too?
Since I am on JB I guess the 4.0.4 bug doesn't matter...
So I can completely flash any firmware for JB 4.1.2 without having any problems?
How can I flash a wrong kernel?

Nope stock firmware are always given as tar files, yes you can flash any region's firmware for JB 4.1.2 without any problem, just make sure to get one for the right model as there are firmwares for other variants which might confuse you.

I know what model to get since I am using international version because I took it almost 2 years ago.
But can I make that tar files zip flashable with android kitchen?
If I flash another carrier firmware will it block the sim in that carrier?
So I guess the tar. files can only be flashed puting phone in download mode with odin...

Whoa tiger!! Yes you can actually convert the tar files into flashable zip using kitchen, carrier specific firmware are usually for locked devices but i dont know what could happen if you actually flashed it my advice stay away from it if you have an unlocked international version, and locked phones can always be unlocked, there is another way of flashing without using pc odin ie. by using mobile odin which is made and maintained by Chainfire, you only need to use your phone and possibly its more safer but you need root access.
Edit: I almost forgot, when you are using kitchen you have to be very very careful because you will have several options like to add root by using a modified kernel which matches your OS version, I would say that you must use it IF ONLY you know what you are doing, and you can also deodex if you want but some kind of glitches can pop up anywhere.

I don't plan to flash a stock firmware. I plan to get one to make the few chsnges I want via android kitchen, give it root accses and the stuff so then I flash it.
Do you guys have any advice on choosing the build number? I heard the XWLSD is a more free bug and stable version of XWLSM which my carrier use. I also saw alot of roms in development for XWLSN... and modem?
May I get forever sim unlocked device by flashing an unbranded firmware?

That i cant tell you dude, in fact I don't know what your carrier is,and I have a unlocked device so maybe other members can help you with that, XWLSN is pretty stable and I myself use it but I think the XWLSS one is better, since you are going to unlock anyway why don't you use XWLSS build?
Edit: Ah the modem In my opinion LS6 is better but some people prefer LS8 anyway its according to upto the user change modems continuously until you find the fastest thats my policy.
Edit: Flashing an unbranded firmware will still lock the device.

Hey Galaxy SII people, I need some help with a friend's SII.
I'm quite knowledgeable with custom ROMs and recoveries, but I have no idea what to do with a stock phone.
The phone is rooted and not getting the OTA to ICS. I want to get the OTA, losing root not necessarily a problem.
Can someone give me a hand with this? I have no idea what I need to do.
The phone also has the stock recovery.
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a conclusive, comprehensive answer.
Go to samfirmware and download the update firmware and install it via odin.
All the best.

Flash stock ROM from http://samfirmware.com/ via Odin. Search for galaxy S2 ROMs, just make sure you don't download the dangerous ROMs (the ones with a warning triangle next to them).

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm downloading a zip now. I flash this with Odin/Heimdall? I thought I needed a .tar and a bunch of other files to flash with Odin.
This won't keep root, right? Is there any way I could get root back after flashing?
Also, will this wipe /data?
Oh, and I have the option to download a ROM for a specific carrier. Does that mean I can't use another carrier?
Edit: While I'm at it, is the stock recovery needed for anything stock ROM related?
Yes download will be in the form of a zip file, once downloading is complete you can extract the tar. file and place in the PDA section of odin. This will not wipe your device, well never has done for me. Yes you will loose root as you have a completely new rom with stock kernel. See the guide for rooting your chosen firmware. As for the carrier i always use the unbranded /open version as this has less bloat ware. All the best.

Hi. I have rooted my S3, to see how it works with PS3 joystick (i am not too impressed)
I have rooted successfully via odin flash guide, but now i get strange problem.
Every now and then, when i want to turn on dispay, it works and show me that clock and then when i swipe to unluck, the phone doesnt respond.
When i power again, display dimms, and nothing happen. I cant unlock my phone, I need to hold power button to reboot, and than it is normal till i lock the screen and want to turn it on again.
My question is, how can i solve it, and if i can't, how can i get everything back to stock and normal?
Try turn off ripple effect in setting, see how it goes.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
First of all, try disabling lockscreen entirely.
Then try performing a full wipe. If nothing changes, flash stock firmware via Odin. If this haven't helped, root your phone, reset bootloader flashing counter via TriangleAway, then flash full stock firmware and make a warranty claim.

As i thought, now, without changing anything, the problem goes away. But i think it will came back
I forgot one big thing!
!!!! When i first flashed PDA, i flashed it with something CF, not insecure kernel (MY FAULT). Then i got this problem but i can say that i couldnt use my phone. Only just after reboot. Then i flashed insecure kernel, al now problem is still here but it is not so often, but i must fix this.
So maybe the problem is because i flashed wrong file, so "bad" files are still here?
Is there an easy fix for this?

May I know why you are not able to use Odin?
That is a very simple way to root.
It depends on your current firmware/kernel. I was able to flash and never used Odin I've rooted the phone using exynos abuse as I had really vulnerable kernel, then I installed Recovery by rom manager and flashed stuff from the open recovery. But make sure that exynos abuse works for your firmware before using it and make sure you know what you are doing and don't touch anything else then root option in this program

The date of purchase means nothing. I know that you have stock firmware, but there are many stock firmware versions (even if all are 4.1.2) and they have different vulnerabilities. I was at XXELL4 kernel at stock, which is old and vulnerable, but you may be on one of the newest kernel which can't be abused without ODIN. Please take more time to read guides and get more familiar with the phone, as your next post might start by "I've bricked my phone, please help" You will survive few days at stock rom and it seems that you don't know the basics

Do not use Kies!
All you need to do is install the drivers of your phone and once that is
done and Kies is opened infront of you open, go to
Task Manager > Processes > Remove All Kies Related Applications
and then use Odin to root your phone.
1. Provide us with kernel version.
2. Are you on ICS/JB?
3. Are you on OS X? If you are use Heimdall; Mac alternative to Odin. Otherwise there is no reason why you should use anything other than Odin/Heimdall, just flash CF Root.
what do you need root for? if you don't know the difference between Kies and Odin, don't root it, you'll brick it
Hello, I would like to ask something.
I knew that recently Samsung has released 4.3 update for Samsung Galaxy SIII International Version. The 4.3 update hasn't reach my country yet. I would like to know is it possible for me to flash another country's official frimware? Is there any negative effects?
Meanwhile, if I flash the latest stock rom back to my phone, will it be unrooted?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yes, you can flash a rom from another country -which includes a modem for another country. If the modem is unsuitable you will lose signal strength or even all connection.
Of course if you flash an unrooted stock rom then your phone will be unrooted, that's the whole point.
Unless you are confident in flashing modems and kernels I would not advise using 4.3 yet -it isn't reliable unless you can replace both.
Thanks for the quick reply
In that case, is it possible to flash just the ROM without the modem/baseband? (SamMobile ROMs come with seperate PDA, Modem)
