[Q] 2 Partition ?! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I had 4.1.2 stock rooted on my s3. then I saw paranoid android and wanted to try it out. So I installed it and it works nice.
I ended having 2 partition on my internal storge and cant do anything about it. From around 11GB i only have ~ 500MB left.
Also when i go into MIUI Explorer I can see that there are 2 partitions called " sd0 " and " ext sd0".
How do i delete any of them for a fully functional paranoid android with space left over for music etc. ?
I got Titanium backup from stock rom 4.1.2
also CWM + kTool ( recovery and EFS saved )

Good links

Thank you for the links, very kind !
i looked around by myself but i had no idea what i am actually searching for.
So now i understand why i have so less space.
I used 4.1.2 with many apps + lot of music , somehow it created me another
user called alias when i flashed 4.2
i just went to data/media and found all of my music etc. and that explains why i have 2 partitions now.
Someone pls tell me how to delete this alias and get my space back + removing this partition.

that's the way 4.2 works, you can't delete it. just move your old data to the new location.
or if you're back on 4.1, just delete like you normally would

Thanks for your reply !
because no one answered i was afraid and am downloading stock 4.1.2
Ok, if thats the way 4.2 works then i have to deal with it.
But there are now 2 partition is there a chance to get rid of that ? ( pic included )
Other thing is, can i delete everything under "data/media" this is the path for my old things like
apps, music, pics etc. ?

well, what you could do, if you are still rooted, backup your data & apps etc. with Titanium, copy the backups to your external sd and format your system & internal sd. That way you would start from scratch and you could flash a 4.2 rom. or you go into each folder and manually remove the once that are not necessary or double.

what makes me wonder is that i dont have any extern sd cards.
i dont understand why there is this partition anyway, cause i only got my 16GB internal storage.
but then again, cant i simply delete the whole media folder and save time going trough every singl folder ?

Its not a partition. Its a different data structure.
It basically changes sdcard from data/media into data/media/0.
When you go to 4.2, Manually move everything excep obb and legacy into /0 (broswe to data/media with root explorer or any file manager with root permissions).
When you go back to 4.1.2, move it back in the same way. It's really easy

[Q]How to apply CyanogenMod 7.1(2)

So, first of all, a big hello to the community! Spent the last 2 hours digging around the forum, as I'm a new user and I'm amazed with this big things Galaxy has to add! I came from a Symbyan platform, and the only thing I done was Flash my Nokia 5800 with a C6 FW by PHNT.
Few days ago, I moved to this awsome Android world, where I see alot fo stuff new to my eyes, and that I wish some replys from you guys.
You all gonna say this questions are answered elsewhere, but I digged the forum, and I find the most various kind of answers for the same questions, which I'm now pretty much confused.
The thing is, I want to apply this CM7.1(or , dunno which is better), from what I see, it improves greatly our Galaxy Ace, but on the other hand, I saw a post that says taht this is simple as Root(Which I've done already), and apply a CWM or something, and apply the CM7.1 same way as Rooting.
The fulcral questions is which is the safest(and noobier-frindly) way to apply that CM 7.1?
Also if someone can aid me, what CWM does exactly? Its a backup app like TitaniumBackup?
I think you did not read This my friend.
And CWM is a custom recovery which has a lot more features than stock recovery.
CWM5 can be found Here
The tutorial is at the first link I gave you. But if you didn't understand,
I'll tell you step-by-step
1. Download the rom and CWM and put it in your phone.
2. Enter recovery and choose install zip from SD then choose CWM.
3. Reboot and enter recovery again.
4. Your now in CWM Recovery, before flashing any rom, doa wipe data.
5. Choose install zip fom SD card and choose CM7.1/2
reboot then voila
Hited Thanks for you!
Really helpfull thread! How did I missed it lol!
So the thing taht really caught my attention was the option to don't waste internal memory, which is exactly the only reason I wanted to Cyan Mod.
If it's not a hassle to you, can you pinpoint me the EXACT file to run from CWM? I really don't wanna mess up my phone(though I will only apply it after I buy my 16GB SDcard soon).
Here's where I stand:
1-> I rooted my device with some root I found over youtube, worked fine, then google play said me to update the superuser app, so I did. I guess it's updated, no problems there.
2-> Now I need CWM(I got a file named "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace-fix.zip", should I use that one or try to find the v4 one?
3-> Then I need to run on Home Button+Power to install that mod, but here comes 4 questions:
"You need to extend the internal app storage to the sd card. The FIRST thing you need to do is go back to Clockworkmod recovery mode and partition your sdcard so that it has a ext4 extension. Then update from ketut.kumajaya's post with cf-rootdtapps2sd???.zip(forgot the full name). That defaults all downloaded apps to run from the sd card."
3.1-> Does CWM have the partition option already? And does it formats the SDcard?
3.2-> Can u direct me the EXACT file so I don't mess this up?
3.3-> This doesn't wipes any data from the phone right?
3.3.3-> And what about the apps alraedy installed and using the internal memory even though they are "in SD card, as phone shows", i need to reinstall them right?
Ty again for any hassle done! And I will thank you agani, just for wasting the time here with me
2. Ok flash that. Some roms are compatible with that but not on v4
3. No. Don't use CFRoot. It's for stock roms only.
3.1 Yes, you can partitition SD card on CWM.
And yes, it wipes everything in your SD
and after you have partitioned it, download Link2sd from the market, choose ext4 then link every app (except system apps of course)
I guess that answers all, just didn't get what u meant by that, do i use taht version 5 or the v4 of CWM? And what is a stock rom? I never changed nothing on my phone except the Rooting.

stock roms are roms made by samsung. Your currently in a stock rom but you are going to CM7 so don't use it anymore. Use v5
Wait, can't I have that Mod to save all in SDcard and save internt memory? I just want that thing, I dont have Cyan mod if I can do that without it
Can u pinpoint me to the correct file please?

After you partition your sd card thorough cwm recovery, do a factory reset and then install cm7.2. Then you can use either s2e or link2sd or a2sd to free up your internal memory.
If you are asking for exact cm7.2 file, there are many of them. Try cm7.2 by vo1 first. Thread will be in development section created by Lovetz.
It seems your not really getting what I mean
First I wanted the CM7 mod, BUT after reading that thread you showed me, I saw its possible to free up internal memory WITHOUT the need of installing CM7, and installing that other file right?
I just wanted to know which is the right file so I don't mess up. I just want to have the option to save all to SDcard, and not to use Internal memory. That was the reason I wanted CM7. Understand now?
use minitool partition wizard to repartition your sdcard. create two partition, both as primary, first partition as fat32 and second partition as ext2/ext3/ext4
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
then flash this from clockworkmod recovery. before flashing do mount system and data manually

then install this

See what I mean? One guy tells me totally different apps to download + a PC program and to flash another app then you say, and you say with only 1 app + the Link2SD I can do it That's why I get confused ;p I guess both apps are good, which one the safest and best?

Lol they are many ways to partition your SD card ...cwm recovery eliminates the need of a PC but Mini tool partition wizard is recommended ( though I trust cwm recovery blindly )

Can you tell me how is it partitioned?
First partition will be for photos etc, the 2nd will be for apps?
Can you pinpoint me the .apk file for CWM you use?
Also, what should I expect when doing the partition trought CMW? Its just an option saying to do the partition? I read taht is needed to mount/unmount things,I have NO IDEA on how to achieve that.
If u got access to pc, better do it on pc with minitool after making backup of your whole sdcard. Yes cwm can do it but who know when disaster strike u'll lose all your sdcard data. Better to be safe than sorry mate.

Well cwm 5 can be found by Googling ( cwm 5 for Samsung galaxy ace)
2. It's not how you think ..once you partition your SD card the partition is inaccessible to you ..example if on a 2 gb card if u create a partition of 512mb when u go to settings the phone will read your SD card as 1.5 gb
3. Cwm guides are readily available on you tube
4. As the other guys have said b4 u need to use apps like link2sd to be able to use the partition ..entirely for apps alone ...s2e is the best but works ONLY on cm7
5. During the partition process your SD card will be formatted !!!
Backup your Data first! !!!!
6. Anything else???
P.S. I can't provide links as I m on my phone and even on a PC I would have advised u to Google
So, in your example, on a 2GB card, the phone will read only 1,5GB, so what will be that 1,5GB for? And the 512MB what will they be for?
Thanks for the reply

1.5 gb will be for your media -photos videos files etc that 512 MB is accessible only through s2e,link2sd and other such apps( u see I know only these 2 ) this 512 MB can be used to store your apps ---I.e. move the dalvik cache to the SD card which in turn results in a lot of free internal space....
Once upon a time I had 120 apps on my phone and 50 MB was still remaining.
P.S. please don't ask what dalvik cache is ...Google it instead ..ull get better info

Transfer app data to extsdcard

Hey all
I got my S3 a couple of weeks back.. Used it amazing phone... Rooted it... Flashed slim bean... Flashed official Indian JB 4.1.1
And onto it right now
The thread heading!! With all this flashing the internal memory wipes out. And backing it up every time would be a hassle.
I have come from the galaxy ace where the app data would be stored in the ext sd card so there's no chance of loosing all the data... Like WhatsApp images preferences of apps... I actually lost my entire titanium backup
Had to restore manually
Any way I can transfer app data to extsdcard?
I have root and busybox.

Nope, can't move data from internal memory to extSD on S3 i9300 or i9305. It's a major flaw on Samsung's part imo.
There's an app developed by slig, it's called DirectoryBind that will allow you to move data across to your extSD. Works like a charm for 90% of games e.g. Gameloft where extra data can be over 500MB. I'm using DirectoryBind and it's works well, never had an issue, in fact only found one game out of thirty so far that I couldn't bind.
Note: if you use DirectoryBind you'll need to bind each app/game separately, you can't bind a folder like android/obb or android/data thinking it will automatically move the new installs across, this must be done per install.
If you just wanna move apk's across, then Link2SD will also work, but it won't transfer gama data.
Thanks for the reply
I'll try the directorybind
So now how do you manage flashing without losing data?
It's a big bummer :banghead:

I haven't flashed yet, only rooted. I am considering flashing Pandoriam...
So about not losing data... I use MyBackup Pro and would most likely use it when I flash a new rom on my i9305...
If you move data across to your extSD with DirectoryBind, you can backup your config. in DirectoryBind, flash without losing the extSD data and then re-install your APKs and restore your config. backup in DirectoryBind... then you're back where you left off when you start any of the APKs from your launcher, they'll pull the data from the DirectoryBind (extSD) straight away.
Not sure if this answers your question? Another alternative would be to backup the data you'd like to keep with Titanium Backup.

Make sure you set your backup location in Titanium Backup to the external SD (like "/mnt/extSdCard/Titaniumbackup/").
The same for CWM backup data : do it on external SD. If you create ,ZIP compressed images, you have to transfer this manually to ext SD.
Once in a while (before a ROM-flash) I launch FTP-Server on my SG3 and transfer all data to my PC through WIFI.
Wireless FTP is no hassle, no wires, and the fastest way to transfer lots of data from phone to PC. (I get 8500kB/s transfer rate).
Also, buy a 64 GB SD !
+1 pat 357, that's exactly how I backup my stuff .
Regarding the possibility of transferring the data to the micro sd card this is what I did after having tried apps2sd (doesn't work) & directory bind (imo was quiet unstable and tiresome).
Basically, you're going to make your phone believe that your sdcard is actually your internal & vice versa. Of course, using this tweak will really only make sense if you own either a 32 or higher micro sd card. I run it on the latest jelly bean 4.1.1 (rooted, obviously) samsung official stock rom and works like a charm coupled to a class 10 64GB sd card. I use the initial 16GB (now consiered as external sd for the phone) for music or any kind of media file I feel like having around.
What I did was a fresh install : wipe dalvik cache/factory reset...then flash Rom; Root&install CWM; flash kernel (I used SiyahKernel S3-v1.7 available here) through CWM; flash tweak (ExtSD2internalSD) through CWM. Ticks like a clock ever since then.
Hope this helped, if it did, enjoy and of course, thanks a million to mattiadg for this amazing tweak.

HELP - wiped internal memory, lost pictures

I didn't backup my internal SD card and i lost my pictures while installing CM10. What program do you guys recommend to restore pictures if possible?
The only option is to send the phone to a company who does data restoring. AFAIK there are a couple of websites that do that with android phones, use search.
And why are you asking for HELP in General and not in the Help section?
Sorry, newb posting.
If anybody knows data restoration on flash memory, please let me know!
is that even possible just because some of your files were moved into /sdcard/0/ folder and some other didn't so you just don't see it in default ??
i have been situation like this as i first time install 4.2 on my Galaxy Nexus , but then i soon discovered the datas still in there just because my default is now /sdcard/0 so i didn't see it in the first place.

Gotcha. Yep, when you go from a rooted 4.2.x ROM back to a 4.1.x ROM, often the permissions for "0" can prevent deletion. If this is teh case, a format of /sdcard will usually sort that out (from recovery)

[Q] device storage showing minus when trying to open gallery

My i9300 is nealy unusable. The first sign of trouble was a error message trying to open gallery on 4.1.2. I then flashed latest omegarom after wipeing everything didnt solve the problem just gives a better description.
"There is not enough space (-5371MB) in your device memory. Delete some files" In settings the internal storage has 5.36GB free. I have been trying out a few different roms over the last few days but have always full wiped.
Now a lot of my apps force close on launch. How can my internal storeage be showing to some apps as a minus but the system gets the correct free space. I did have a play around with ExtDs2InternalSd v5 but decided to to swap back.
Hope someone can help me..Thanx in advance..

Then this is your problem did you follow proper uninstall instructions for ExtDs2InternalSd v5 >> If you want to remove the mod with a file explorer with root ability, delete the file 11extsd2internalsd from etc/init.d folder <<
If that does not work you will need to flash new rom and full wipe..

Yes back up internal and external sd cards and format both..make sure you format any ext2 partitions on your external sd card with minitool partition wizard or equivalent formatting tool.
