[Q] USB host (OTG) flashdrive intermittent connection - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am experiencing intermittent USB host (OTG cable) connection on Samsung Galaxy S2, Android 4.0.3 (stock unrooted but exotic brand).
I've spotted this when trying out Helicon Remote app with a Nikon D90 camera. Connects and shows live image from the camera and other signs of operation for a few seconds, then disconnects, connects again, disconnects etc, then the app complains over connectivity and suggests to restart the camera...
Similarly, flashdrives are first mounted, then unmounted unexpectedly, then reported as damaged (though still fine on a PC and chkdsk finds nothing).
I believe it is not cable-related because I've tested 3 different OTG cables for the S2, two of them new, and one of them had once worked fine with flashdrives. But that was with Android 2.3.6 before upgrade to ICS, and I also had to replace the USB&MIC board in the phone due to a charging problem (both rev.2.2) in between.
USB Host Diagnostics says GT-I9100, IML74K/XWLPD, verdict Yes/Full. But the test is not long enough I guess.
Normal USB storage connection to PC still works fine (normal cable not OTG for this one).
Should I try another USB&MIC board, or is this more likely a software issue? I've managed to google up a couple of similar case with flashdrives, with no solution, maybe didn't use good keywords. Any suggestions?

As you have tried with 3 different cables I guess it's a software issue, most probably the usb host driver's settings must be corrupted , try a factory reset, and if that doesn't work flash with a stock firmware, try upgrading to Jelly Bean or if you like ICS getting the same firmware and re flashing ain't a bad idea, also since you are rooted try flashing through Mobile Odin if you don't want to go through the hassle of flashing through the computer.
Edit : I don't think it could be a hardware problem as the device when it becomes a slave device works normally and is only having this issue when it becomes master device, only after trying above things you need to think about a replacement.

Tnx. I thought that'd be one way to start. But I'm not so proficient in this flashing business. I think the ICS update brought me less good than hassle, I've wasted a couple of days fixing things. I'm not rooted yet and I was also considering warranty service, but that'd mean trips to the centre and a week without the phone, and I'd want a thorough backup first and that'd require rooting and unrooting AFAIK... ugh. They're probably better for flashing than me, but I guess they might have not tried OTG in their lives
I was wandering if somebody here knows something about the cause of such specific issue, where a working connection drops after a few seconds.

Flashing a stock rom of the same region of your device won't actually void your warranty, you don't need root for that if you are doing it via PC Odin, but since you're not sure I won't recommend it, and I had something similar with my Galaxy Tab 7 plus with stock honeycomb, the connection flickers the first few attempts (I have tried more than 10 time's), first time connected and BAM suddenly some weird error, then it always on connection showed device corrupted, then after some time BAM!! Connected, then normal use, my God!! I also had to face the write_media_storage permission problem too, but all in all I upgraded, then flashed and flashed and finally reached JB aah smoothness bonanza USB OTG works like a charm.
Edit : and for the record Galaxy Tab 7 Plus is S2 with a large ugly screen.

I'm not sure if stock JB is ready at my operator. I've had second thoughts about updating via cable when the USB port is under suspicion. And I hear about nasty developments from Google in recent updates. Since which version is the write_media_storage permission issue?
Btw I've just read in another thread someone found root was required for USB OTG in stock JB?
Is it possible that some odd permission thing would kill USB host comm only after a few seconds?

No, you don't need root for USB OTG in S2, in some devices yes but S2 no... Because it was one of the widely announced feature during it's release and you don't need to concern about the permission issue.. it's honeycomb only lol.
Edit : I mentioned the permission issue just to show you that I had to go through a lot of trouble connecting OTG with my Tab and on upgrading it with JB everything became smooth as butter. The S2 has never had or never will have this problem.

Since you're reluctant to flash via a micro usb port under suspicion I have an idea to flash without touching the computer.. It's actually safe I guess in comparison. It's actually like this :
1.Root device using Exynos Abuse App(I guess you will trigger the counter though)
2 .Install Mobile Odin App
3.Flash your stock firmware via Mobile Odin.
4.Done and Done.

I see that was actually an S2 plus (minus?)
I'd assume the phone would first check permission, then start talking. This here looks so weird, like it starts normally, then does some periodic check and kills it, reminds me of one piracy protection scheme

Ah lol now I understand what you're referring to about that root requirements I saw your other post, in JB one thing was removed that is not USB OTG the thing that needs root is UMS or USB Mass Storage, ie if you have tried connecting to a computer in GB or ICS you can either connect via MTP or UMS for file transfer Samsung removed USB storage mode in JB update.

I tried a couple more things, without changing anything.
The USB Host Controller app. I'm not sure if it is supposed to work correctly without root. On the Info tab it says
S3C USB host driver NOT found
Root hub present, USB host mode is active.
On the USB tab it does shoe the Nikon D90 camera when connected.
I've also tried an USB mouse but it doesn't show it, nor does the mouse light up, nor there is any mouse cursor.
Googling around I understand the mouse does not show up because of a Samsung "whitelist" blocking it. I gather more USB devices used to work earlier but the whitelist leaving only flashdrives mainly came with 4.0.3 update? I could only find hearsay, is there an official Samsung policy regarding this?
And there was a reference to a Siyah kernel which should restore this... or there are perhaps other popular ones that fix this?
And, since the mouse doesn't show up at all, I assume this whitelist has probably nothing to do with my original problem?

Typing this using a mouse in stock rom.
Edit :As you can see that above statement is written using a mouse in pure stock JB, so I don't think Samsung has blacklisted anything and and the mouse used is some unknown weird brand. Since your mouse didn't even light up, I'll say it may be something other than host driver issue, because the host device will always provide the power, you may possibly be facing a hardware issue, the only thing that can assure that it's not a software issue is a flash using a stock rom, or try cm9 stable I recall that OTG worked perfectly in it. Since you're afraid of flashing via a computer, I'll tell you certain steps which will help you flash without using a cable or a computer :
1.Root using Exynos Abuse App (preferably chain fire's app) (search, read and download)
2 . Install Mobile Odin and set it up.
3.Download a stock rom or custom rom(you must read very carefully) , preferably JB.
4.Flash via mobile Odin.
5.make sure you read all related threads several times.

Notice it is SGS2 specific, not Samsung or ICS general. You are using a Galaxy Tab I gather?
I've tried three Logitech mice and one Labtec.
Not that I'd want to use a mouse (a keyboard might be more useful), just want to see what's going on with USB host.

Lol friend, I use a s2 also but also have galaxy tab 7+ which is just like a galaxy s2 but with a huge screen, like I was saying, Samsung may have created a whitelist with ics, but not in JB as I clearly used a mouse in JB, in my s2 I am using a custom kernel so I am not sure about stock in s2 but since now stock JB in my tab support it then stock JB in s2 should also support it. I am suggesting that Samsung must have removed the whitelist limitation in JB.
I am saying this whitelist thingy might be ics specific because in GB stock mouse used to work in my s2, I would have tested it out for you if it weren't ics, ics 4.0.4 stock kernel contains a dangerous brick bug and I don't wanna go anywhere near an ics stock kernel (even though there are other version's which are said to be safe, my heart ain't strong enough to take a risk with stock kernels)

[Q] USB Problem - KIES not recognizing the phone

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I am on stock but somehow, KIES wont work. It keeps saying connecting, but wont go further than that.
USB debugging is unchecked so I am sure that it not the problem. I heard T-Mobile for ICS upgrade, so I just wanted to be prepared for ICS update for ATT, but idk, why KIES is not working.
Any suggestions?
Bent USB prong in the phone? I've had to adjust mine several times since I got it launch day. Or hardware failure. When my USB was bent it could still charge via a wall charger

yeah I think it works when i use at a certain angle.
I am trying to go back to the stock rom and hopefully i can return it, but for some reason Odin is not recognizing it. I mean the yellow box of COM:0 does not show up in the "I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL.exe"
Do you know the reason for this?
Missing driver.
IIRC I believe you were supposed to install KIES and another Samsung driver...but I remember using my phone on a netbook without it and it worked...
Try installing the USB driver on the official samsung website? I can't post links yet or I would link it...

There can be multiple possible reasons. You've eliminated some of them. Could be a failing usb port on the phone, bad cable, etc.
If you can't get usb to work, you can flash back to stock using mobile odin. I assume you are rooted. Just download the one-click downloader to your phone over wifi, or use dropbox or something to get it onto your phone. Mobile odin will recognize and flash from the one-click downloader. There is even a guide in the general section on how to do this.

Creepy just posted this while I was getting you the link for the guide to return to stock with no PC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691659.
I returned to stock, and I think I figured out the problem as well.
The problem I am quite sure is the USB port on the phone. Like I said, when I keep the USB cable connected at a certain angle, it works just fine.
I will just have to live with it now I think because ODIN displays custom binary installed and the count is 2, so I dont think ATT will let me exchange the phone for a new one.

ehhh, its worth a try. Thats a hardware failure, the one that samsung is known for. Mine is starting to go out too.
I've returned 1 rooted phone with this issue, and warranty'd 1 rooted one that had a broken LCd.
These were Infuse's but same damn samsung problem.

Yeah I am surprised these hardware problem are so common.
No wonder most people are crazy about Apple sells so many iPhones
I had the very same issue as you are describing.
All you need to do is tweak the USB port a little. Did mine about 3 or 4 months ago and have not had to touch it since.
Use a small precision screw driver, fold a couple layers of Kleenex over the tip and gently bend it towards the screen side of the phone.
It WILL work perfect after that.

[Q] Soft Brick and USB issues

So a little history, I flashed my vibrant from Bionix v1.3.1 (fishmanmod) to ICS and started to have a lot of troubles with random restarts and battery issues. Prior to ICS everything was perfect. I've tried so many different versions of ICS and all of them have resulted in random shut downs. The most recent one I tried was Slim ICS. After having such bad luck with ICS roms I decided to go back to Bionix. However my phone now cannot be recognized by my computer which was weird because it did when I flashed it back to stock to install ICS cleanly. I tried various different drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled kies, almost everything I thought of. So then I was like okay, I'll just go back to a nandroid backup of Bionix. Stupid idea, should have read up more on that as it softbricked my phone. Now I'm stuck with a phone that stays on the Vibrant screen. I can get it into download mode with holding vol+ and power but that is no use because windows keeps saying it cannot recognize my device. I can't get it to recovery mode either to flash any roms I have on the phone. It might be a hardware issue because my mothers vibrant gets detected with the same drivers but just a couple of days ago I flashed my phone back to stock with odin which really confuses me. Does anyone have any ideas I could do? Is there a way to get into recovery mode to flash different roms? Is there a manual way of installing the drivers or surefire way of knowing if the vibrant has hardware issues?
Also when I flashed back to stock with odin it did take a good hour of installing and reinstalling drivers for my computer to recognize it in download mode. I've tried 3 different cables, one by samsung and the other two are third party. All these cables work on my mother's vibrant. I've also tried a different computer as well, no luck.
Try deleting ALL USB drivers from your PC and plug in the phone. It should automatically search and download drivers. If that doesn't work then its most likely something to do with the USB cable. I recently soft bricked my vibrant too and my USB would not work at all but it worked fine on a friends phone(weird). So I bought a new one from T-Mobile themselves and it worked! I was really close to believing I had a bad USB port on my phone,if a new cable doesn't work that could be the issue for you. There are a few places online that will replace your USB port on the phone for around 40 bucks, a new USB cable from T-Mobile will cost around $15.
PS: You can search ADB reboot recovery but this will not work unless you can connect to the PC. I personally would buy a new cable from T-Mobile just to know if its a bad USB port on your phone.

Yeah I've read in another post about how someone bought a replacement cable from T-Mobile which fixed the problem. I find it weird how the stock samsung cable does not work yet the T-Mobile cable did. What makes the 15 dollar T-Mobile cable better? I'll definitely give it a shot though.

I'm not sure what makes it better to be honest, it's just one of those things where their cables work better. It is most definitely more durable than the stock cable that came with my phone. If you have a problem with Tmobile's USB cable not working then you most likely have a bad port on your phone(happens more than you might think). I feel like a new cable will solve your problem tho, let us know if it works!

So I bought the T-Mobile universal data cable in store for 12.99 and turns out it did not work. That's okay, they told me I could return in within 30 days to get a full refund. Now my only hope is to send it to someone who could repair it.
The phone can go into download mode, so hopefully once this usb port gets fixed I can finally get into odin. Thanks iTz KeeFy for the suggestion to try a different cable.

[Q] I777 No longer able to mounted to PC...

My I777 has been acting up lately, and now I'm out of options and wondering what my next move should be.
For several days when I'd connect the phone to the PC via USB, it started saying "this device can perform faster when on a USB 2.0 port..." - which, my ports ARE 2.0.. transfers were taking forever. Now, anytime I plug it in it simply says "USB Device not recognized" - I've tried the OEM cable, the plethora of other cables, 4 different PC's... *ALL* have the same result.
My concern is with a custom ROM on it and no way to get any PC to recognize the phone to get it back to root - how should I proceed from here for warranty purposes? I've only had it since March - just wondering what's gonna happen at this point - or is this even fixable? All the threads I've seen say it needs replaced... but with no way to unroot, etc., I'm just unsure how this is gonna go.
Thanks for any advice.

You can always use Mobile Odin to flash back to stock since your on a custom ROM.

Absolutely NOT.
This is a situation that's been coming over a period of time, starting with the inability to see it as a USB 2.0 device when initially plugged in, and now has deteriorated to the point that it can't even be seen.

Yeah, I sure did - nothing. Even in recovery, it won't "mount" usb there either.
Samsung's have a crappy USB port. It fails sometimes. You have a hard time charging at all?
But like I stated above, even without a computer connection you can get Mobile Odin and flash back to stock, as long as your rooted.
I'm having this same issue. I just got the phone earlier this week and I am unable to get bit connected to my pc to root or Odin. I have installed and uninstalled Kies multiple times on two different computers, tries different ports, and checked if the cable worked by using another phone (PC recognized without an issue). I get the USB not recognized or the 2.0 USB message. If I enable debugging, I can connect regularly and transfer files through windows explorer. But if I use USB debugging off, then nothing will work. I've tried using odin and it will just get stuck at setup connection or cache.img and then I'd have to pull the device. I've tries updating through Kies when it shows the USB 2.0 message but once the S2 hits download mode then the computer stops recognizing it. I have also tried installing the i777 drovers on the Samsung website and its still a no go. Does anyone know how to fix this? Its not rooted so mobile Odin won't help me now.

Uninstall drivers, reboot, install updated ones, reboot, Clean USB ports on your phone and computer, clean the cable, Replace usb cable, replace the actual lower dock connector PCB. -> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140663430775&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
There are about a billion things you can do. I've replaced mine at least twice, I swear that part is designed to fail after a few months. I ordered one for my GF's i777 and it should be here soon, can't wait to fix it! I hate having broken sh_t.

Yes. USB cables go bad often, especially these crappy micro B connectors.

It is the OEM cable that came with my Samsung Infuse. It worked with the T989 3 days ago and it's not working with my i777. Its strange because I tried it with my infuse again and I am able to Odin just fine. Could it really be an issue with my USB or will it be a PCB issue? I would rather or not disassemble my phone if it is a PCB issue. Should be able to do a warranty exchange though.

I hate to break it to you brother but it's damn near impossible to determine what the actual culprit could be, your best best is to try each and every single different thing I've listed. The end result being changing the PCB which one, isn't that hard, and two, is very cheap the only problem is waiting for the board to come in the mail.

I understand, which is why I'm hoping that by posting my story up, someone who has experienced the same problem can help. If not, then I can get others' opinion on it and when the issue is fixed, the solution will be available for future users.

Its the usb board on your phone.
I have the same problem so now I have to get mine changed too.
I've soft bricked my phone 2 times with this problem and it takes hours to get Odin to pick up my phone.
Swap the faulty chip and you should be good.

Its strange because when I enable USB debugging, I can get a "USB connection" on the phone and data transfers fine. But when I turn it off, I get a "MTP connection" and sometimes it'll connect (5% of the time) and allow me to transfer data. But when lies tries to update when that mtp connection is active, it'll hang when the phone goes into download mode. Did you have this same issue?

I f you're able to transfer files via mass storage with USB debugging enabled then you can (most likely) rule out hardware failure on your phone.
If anything this sounds like a driver issue on the cpmputer. Are you running windows? If so remove and reinstall the drivers for your phone.
Still think its hardware.
I can connect 1/100 of the times I'm plugged into a computer. Its not a driver issue because my girlfriend has an i777 as well and no problems for her connecting at all.
Its not ROM related because I have this problem with all ROMs.

Does that apply to ums as well? From his description he can connect in ums just fine. Its only mtp that's giving him problems. In his case, with the problem only being in one connection mode, it leads me to think drivers. In your case, tested against another s2 I'd say hardware.
Just tried using a Motorola cable and a third PC and my chances of connection increased to about 15-20%. Kies and Odin failed on me a few times just like I had described before. But eventually Odin was able to flash okay. Finally on ICS on my i777! I think I'll stay on stock since I'd rather not go USB and PC hunting to flash stock if anything goes wrong.

GT-P7500 - No access to Connection kit, Mass storage, Odin, Kies, after official ICS

My P7500 originally came with Honeycomb and worked fine. I didn't know about the other ROMs at the time when the popup announced the ICS 4.0.4 was available. I received and installed the official ICS 4.0.4 via OTA. Stupid mistake!
Since then, I have not been able to access my Connection kit (for usb, memory stick and external SDcard), Connect via USB cable to my laptop (or any other pc), or connect to my tablet with Odin, Kies, or any other tools that work via USB. My other tablet and phone GT-I9001 and GT-P7300 both rooted and running perfectly, work fine with all the same features I am missing on my P7500, as well as connecting to my PC, ...
Currently, I get files back and forth using dropbox and email without any problem, which allows me to use the tablet as an everyday device. The problem is: I want to be able to root my device so that I can use titanium backups, ... and have the freedom that others here have in rooting their devices.
My questions:
- Is there any way to root my device without having access to Odin or Kies?
- Does anyone know how to enable the missing "features" that came after the ICS update?
This really sucks guys. I know its not n XDA problem, but I have no place else to turn.
All I want to do is root my device :\
Thanks in advance
SOLVED
This was a crazy one to solve but I finally figured it out. It's relevant to the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 GT-P7500 and Galaxy tab 8.9 P7300 running ICS 4.0.4. I could not produce this problem in Honeycomb!
There are few things that you can try before this fix. If you want to skip to the end and just try to fix, go ahead as it won't break the bank.
So as in other threads here are a few things to try first (in no particular order).
1. Buy and replace the samsung cable with an original oem samsung usb cable. Just because your cable charges your tab, it doesn't mean all the pins are making contact all the way through for a data connection!
2. Using canned air, carefully blow out the port on the bottom of your galaxy tab to make sure there is no dust or trash preventing connections to the pins.
3. Make certain you have the correct Samsung usb driver's installed in your machine. To be certain, you can try with another Samsung galaxy device. Windows 7 or better will install the driver for you when you plug it in for the first time. If your computer doesn't make a "connected usb device" sound, you'll probably need to skip to the end. Even with the wrong or no driver's, windows will still announce a connected usb device, so pay attention.
4. Make sure the "usb debugging" mode is enabled in settings, although on all three of my test machines, it didn't matter.
5. Make sure "mtp" is checked in storage settings, although in all three of my test machines, it didn't matter.
6. Finally, the things which has made you crazy and brought you here. Samsung tells you to wips your device, people in forums have ignored you, accused you of being a noob, insulted you in unimaginable ways, but here you are, and you're not crazy. So I can't tell you why your tab doesn't connect, but I can tell you how it got that way. I can even repeat the steps that made it happen. You may have installed OTA ICS 4.0.4 update for your tab. Then upon restart, your tab no longer connected to your pc. it no longer recognized the usb sdcard reader, you couldn't get kies or odin to connect to it. You were f**ked!
Here is how I fixed it each time. I purchased the Samsung OEM desktop dock, plugged that into my win7 x64 laptop, then plugged the tab into the dock! My laptop immediately detected my undetectable tab, and my tab announced a usb connection with laptop. So freaking simple it makes me sick! Now the tab works with cable or dock.
The dock model number is Samsung EDD-D100BE Desktop dock
If you found this useful, please give me a thanks.
Theory what causes the problem. For some reason the hardware id gets corrupted inside the Tab itself. Introducing the dock, changes the hardware Id and the tab can communicate over usb again. I'll figure this out and post more details as I learn.
Thanks for reading

I wish this worked, but it didn't for me. Bought myself the Samsung Dock edd-d100be and tried it on all of my computers, but none of them detected it. It's not the cord, since I tried another one. It charges fine, but the computer never sees it.

it's very important to make sure you have the original Samsung OEM cable. I had two additional (chinese made) cables which worked for my 7300, but refused to work with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Moreover I had one cable which was the original Samsung cable but it didn't work also. I'm fairly certain that cable didn't work because of the abuse of traveling around the world for a couple of years . All of those cables appeared to function because they charged the tablets perfectly. For me this was an incorrect assumption. It is possible for the cable to charge the tablet but still give the inconsistent data rates because of loose wires, being pulled, bent connectors, ... We must also try to remember that for many of us the cable is a consumable item. That simply means it deteriorates, with use, overtime! So when I had the new Samsung OEM cable, had all the settings correct, with driver's installed, then dropped the tablet into the dock, my P7500 connected to my computer. If you've done all these things, blew out the connector with the cannefd air on the tablet, and you haven't skipped any points, or made any assumptions, it might very well be that your port on the tablet is broken.
I hope this helps.

[Q] i9300 problem with usb connectivity

i have a sgs3 i9300. i recently flashed the stock MJ9 android 4.3 firmware to it and it was working fine till 3 days ago when it started to show driving mode sign and then i flashed the rom again 2 or 3 times i wiped user data and now the driving mode sign is gone but i cannot connect the phone to the computer, when i connect it nothing happens, on mobile or computer. nothing. (no usb charging or mass storage or any sounds or anything) however i can charge it using usb charger that came with it and strangely i can even use the phone in download mode with computer to flash it using odin. i read somewhere that its not a hardware issue so im really looking forward to some help here. thanks

tested it on different computer still the same. phone hardware should not be the issue since i am able to use it in download mode and charge it using the charger. so hardware port cannot be the problem.

changed the cable. still the same. i saw another post about the same issue (quite old though and had no replies) and he was talking about some code like *#7280# (or similar code that opens up a hidden menu that allows to do something to fix it) but i opened that menu and those options werent there.
searched all over xda. tried all the things suggested (including the recovery firmware). still things remain the same. i still can flash it in download mode. but i cant charge it or anything. im sure its a software problem not a hardware problem. some serious help is required here

Would suggest you uninstall Kies if you have it then download the new version (Kies for non Android 4.3 or Kies 3 for Android 4.3) from here Kies this will re-install the new drivers, re-boot your PC then plug your phone into your PC and you should get the message installing drivers.
Don't let Kies run at the same time as Odin otherwise it wont work but I guess you probably know that.

Have you tried different USB ports on the PC, there have been reports before that for some reason the port people normally use stops working and by switching to another USB port it works
Forgot to say if not already tried, turn off the phone pull the battery leave for a minute or two, replace the battery and reboot then try to connect it.

Not having much luck are you, one last thing I have read before is using a pin or cocktail stick (you may need a magnifying glass as well) to gently clean the USB port on the phone and the cable, remove the battery first, but be careful you don't actually damage anything, that's why you need to be gentle with it.
Can you flash via ODIN successfully but phone not recognised by Windows??? Sounds like not all pins connecting properly. Clean connector VERY carefully...

Never actually had to do it, only read what others have done, maybe an old dry toothbrush would do it as ling as you remember the gentle bit, if the pin did help then this could solve the problem for you it may simply be dust or dirt on the connections.
Would do both the phone and the cable end, not easy but worth a try as its free.
