[Q] i9300 CM10.1 Screen goes dead while on call - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and if anyone knows of a fix.
While using the latest UK i9300 Stock ROM, my phone behaves as it should when on phone calls. However when I use CyanogenMod 10.1, my screen goes black and then flickers on and off when I press anywhere on the screen. The only way I have found to stop this, is to lay the phoine flat and the screen will stay on long enough to unlock the device.
It's nothing major and it's certainly not enough of a reason to make me use the stock ROM, however it does at times drive me mad.

Cool story.

Why post that link, I'm confused lol

because CM discussion goes in there

I would just like to inform everyone who is reading this post that since I update CM10.1 the issue seems to have gone away.

I thought it was related to root but I've had these hot reboots even before rooting so it's not just root. Most likely an app.
Same problem here

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.
Mine is random, many different apps

Mine happened again. I've now uninstalled BetterBatteryStats. I'm going to start uninstalling stuff that uses root to roll that out. I've had these issues on stock but it happened rarely, lately it's been happening very frequently so something is going on.

I've had the same on mine. I rooted mine day 1, so no idea if it would have done it without root. I've defrosted everything in TB and still no luck.

Well I'm tired of the random hot reboots! Some people say it happened to them before rooting, but I don't believe it happened to me until I rooted and installed CWM touch......so I'm going back to stock to start all over again so I can try to narrow down the issue. I'll report back on my progress as it becomes available.

Happening often to me. The search continues. I've now uninstalled adfree. I'm positive this is an app since I had it occur on stock after two weeks of using the phone and installing crap.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.

touch screen issue

hi
was wandering if anyone was having this issue,
for some reason now and again the touch screen stops responding no message shows on screen but to resolve i have to turn screen off n on and it works again, was hapoening on ee rom and custom rom
just wandering if its just me or a common issue
Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk 2
Have you had this issue from day 1?
My lock screen sometimes doesn't recognize my touch when I try to enter my unlock pattern.
I have to release and try again, I was thinking it was just me but could be an issue?
Aside from the lock screen everything else works ok.
Is it only certain parts of the screen or the whole thing? maybe take the phone back to the shop where you got it and get an exchange?
hmm yh the whole screen doesnt respond although it hasnt happened today tho but its wierd seems like a softwaee issue might try and flash a different rom and see how it is
Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk 2
From my experience, it's not the touchscreen but something hogs your phone CPU cycles for a brief moment. Have you tried going to stock and not installing any apps?
I similar issue on GS2 where whole phone freezes (although plays music in the background) and I thought it was touch for a very long time until I realized it was some ****ty app I installed (some tamagochi app I think)
I had this aswell found out it was when I loggers back onto my phone and it checked what as I had running .
I'm a big multi tasKer
try holding your center key and close any UN used apps
yh i agree, will try that next time plus monitoring apps in better battery stats

Hmmm i havent noticed anything like that... are you on stock? I was thinking it may b a software setup issue, As there are many things that can happen when you start modding your phone. But I have quite a few mods and I have not had this issue, I have Skype always on Tango, Viber, Whats App,Facebook, Ms Exchange Services, I have 6 Widgets in total spread out in 4 homescreen. 4 of those widgets Auto update. So I have quite abit going on in this little thing
does seem like a software issue happened again but 5 mins later was showing touches on screen wierd

Not had any issue with my screen and I am running quite a lot on my phone so if it happens with stock I would start to remove apps one by one or do a wipe and add them back one by one. Could be a hardware issue though.

Boot up artifacts

I've noticed that my Nexus 10 at boot up ALWAYS has a flash of artifacts coming from the bottom of the screen... almost like the graphics of a sound equalizer on one of those old stereos. Anyone else get this? I don't experience anything else while I'm using the device, but it is annoying. Screen will probably be sent in for warranty repair anyway... but curious to see if this is affecting anything else.

Same on my end, I haven't really given much importance.
I haven't seen it on every boot, but it is there. It flashes in once and is gone in a split second, so it doesn't bother me. I also haven't noticed any negative symptoms anywhere on my display that could be related to it.

Least I'm not the only one experiencing this. Hasn't affected anything as far as I can tell either but it is alarming when you first see it

It started happening when I unlocked my bootloader, I think that may well be the cause

Mine is in the process of returning from warranty repair screen replacement for other issues than the boot artifacts. I will have to see this week sometime when the tablet returns if the new screen exhibits the same behavior.

Yup, I also see those artifacts during boot up, never paid attention to it

Just noticed these artifacts on mine also. It's sort of random when they do appear. Some boots are clean, then a bunch will have the artifacts flash..
Has anyone submitted a issue report here yet about this? http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list
This one has me worried. Video artifacts are NEVER good. Especially right at boot like that.
Edit: I just submitted it, bad grammar and all! Please star it if you have the issue

I just unlocked my bootloader. I never had that artifact before or after unlocking.
I remember seeing it in like a pre-release review video.
After unlocking, I did notice that there's now a little opened lock icon on the bottom of the bootloader, I'm pretty sure it means "unlocked bootloader". Do people with the artifacts have that icon as well?

I have the same random artifact at boot too. But I unlocked my device as soon as I got it. So I can't tell if this existed before unlocking.

Random Issues

Hi guys, l have recently bought international s3 *India. I am experiencing sleep of death. From time to time screen doesn’t turn on, I have to remove battery 2 to switch the phone on. I was wondering if this is a known issue with phone. I have few more issues. There are black spots and the screen. It is only visible in pitch dark. And there is a slight lag here and there. I feel like installing CM. But it is hardly been 10 days since I got the phone. Any helo would be appreciated. Btw, I am running stock. Thanks for reading!

It's actually a hardware issue. Otherwise Amazon would have an ota to fix it.

I've noticed mine flickering a little bit, but it doesn't happen all that often. I never used it stock, so I just figured it was an issue with the Gapps ROM. Again, it doesn't happen often, so it doesn't bother me too bad, but just to make your mind at ease....you aren't the only one to notice this.
by flickering, do you guys mean the aggressive auto brightness? because that i HAVE noticed. usually turn it off anyway though

No, this is a different item. Like you, I turn off the auto-brightness too. I haven't nailed down when it happens, but it's just a quick bit of feint flickering for me, then back to normal. Kind of hard to explain I guess. I've noticed it a couple times a day since I got mine last week with pretty heavy usage.
ugh i shouldn't' read these threads... now i'm going to be looking for it

My thoughts exactly. The more I read some of the forums, the more I regret my decision of getting the HDX on sale vs the Nexus 7....I was looking at the great specs and not thinking of more, but last night showed me the potential this thing has when I installed the AOSP ROM. Not perfect, but potential. Liking AOSP over the Gapps ROM despite not having music and video.
While reading yesterday's XKCD "What if?", I was able to reproduce the flicker reasonably well. It showed up frequently on the white theme of "Press", but not the dark one (or I simply didn't notice it as much). I did a quick video showing it the best I could. Sorry for the shakiness. The primary time-frame it happens is between 12-16 second mark.
