[Q] Facebook app virus - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello...ive been on the resurrection remix rom for galaxy s2 for quite a sometime...but now there has been a problem with the facebook app
i think its a virus
as soon as i open the app or some other app tries to access facebook app, it crashes and the message box show "Unfortunately, (app name) has stopped."
After this the launcher crashes with the same message. And the message seems to pop up immediately again when i press ok
So basically i have to restart my phone and not use the facebook app to keep it working
I cant uninstall the app from the app settings or clear the app data or cache
i cant disable the app
And the running app shows facebook with 1 process and 3 services
process: facebook com.facebook.katana
services:media upload service, event service and background detection service
I had a similar problem after which i flashed the rom again. The phone and app worked fine for a couple of days but the same problem came again now.
Please help urgently...Thanks in advance!

How about wiping dalvik?

Hmm..to remove fb Just use an application which is not stock installer dependant, like I use One Click Uninstall feature of ES File Explorer which will uninstall the app, or you can use Titanium Backup to uninstall or you can do it manually by going to /system/app and deleting the FB apk via root explorer or by enabling rw permission via ES File Explorer's tools menu.

wiped dalvik
downloaded root explorer and deleted the apk file in data/app folder
The icon is still there and when i click on it, it gives the same message com.facebook.katana has stopped but the app doesn't open now
Should i reinstall now or have to do something more to remove the icon first?

My suggestion is:
Go to CWM Recovery (Home+Power+Vol Up)
There wipe cache, dalvik-cache, /system, data + factory set)
Then reboot system again and if you sign in with your google account in which you have downloaded FB... cancel the procedure when facebook.apk is automatically getting installed in your phone

remnants of deleted apps

I used the BlueMonkey theme by Jivy26, however I didn't like the GoSMSPro. I deleted the app via titanium backup, and used File Explorer to confirm it was deleted. However, it still shows up as being installed in the market place and I have the icon in my app list (although it says the application is not installed on my phone) How do I manusally remove the icon from the app list?

I guess the best thing to do is to reinstall the app and uninstall from the task manager or go to settings-applications and uninstall from there.

i have tried that actually...it just uninstalls forever, and never actually deletes it.

Make sure that the app is not running in the background or as a service.
Reboot the phone and go into settings>applications>running
services and see if you can find the offending app there.
If you can find it there, click on it and select STOP".
Then if all goes well you will be able to do a complete unistall.
Not running as a service =\ Is there a place where those icons are located on the phone itself? I could delete it through root explorer if I could find it.

icons for applications are stored within the apk itself....if the apk is gone, the app is gone.
try uninstalling them and then wipe cache/dalvik cache in CWM

If you know how to use root explorer to delete files
you can go into root of phone /system/apps and find
the offending APK name and delete with root explorer.
Some apps will have a "com." before the actual app name
so look for that too.
Good luck!

[Q] How to remove partially uninstalled system app?

Hi,
I have transformed CoolReader into system app with Titanium backup. It was crashing so I tried to move it back to user app again with Titanium backup. However during this procedure TB hanged and after some 20 minutes I killed it. I later tried to uninstall it (again with TB), but it seems that there are still left parts of it somewhere so now I am unable to reinstall the app from google play (error 491) or if I clear cache and data of google play and force the application to install it keeps crashing.
So I would like to ask what should I delete to completely eliminate the traces of CoolReader (or any application in general) and be able to install it again?
I'm not sure if this will work but give it a shot.
Try finding an apk of your app and, using Root Explorer, paste it in /system/app (remember to mount /system as RW using Root Explorer). Set permissions (All read, owner-write, owner-execute) and reboot. That should register the app as a system app.
Go back into /system/app and delete it. Reboot and it should unregister it as a system app, allowing you to reinstall from Google Play

I cleared the data then went to clear the cache I may have clicked uninstall by accident. Thanks for the apk files, how do I go about flashing them?

You should be able to download right to your phone, make sure allow unknown sources is checked in security settings. Then go to download folder and install, or copy and paste with a root explorer.
Using a root explorer I saw that both of those files were still installed on my phone, I couldn't uninstall them to try and reinstall them. I get the message " uninstall not successful"

Thanks for the suggestion, I did exactly that and it still have the problem. Not sure if this is related but when I go to settings-apps-downloaded or All nothing appears in the folders, the apps appear in my app drawer and run fine. Were you able to uninstall both the files?

The apps not showing up is fixed in 7.3 , would you try updating. Then clear app data from manage apps for both contacts and storage. By the way how did you clear it the first time ?

Checked my contacts app, it isn't running nor can I enable it. I noticed after restarting my phone the message would come back and I have to clear contacts storage each time. This is a real pain..

Other than restoring to stock and rerooting and unlocking, I am out of ideas. All of your data would be saved so it isn't that big of a pain.
Edit...do you have both these lg contact apps in system apps? And are the permissions set as shown ?

Bootloop after removing system apps - miui8

Hi,
I am currently on the latest version of global dev (MM)
After removing system apps (even gapps like Gmail and so on), the phone doesn't boot
It has this loading boot animation at the bottom, and after it finish "loading", half a minute later it's starts again
I want a debloated version of miui.
Is there any rom that provides that out of the box?
Try below MIUI debloating script..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/redmi-note-3-pro-snapdragon-miui-t3372437
What all you meant by 'so on'.. Now to get the Phone working again, Re flash the rom again.. Uninstall only those apps, you know for sure..

Thanks for the replies
I have tried to Uninstall those apps which on the post but resulted in the same result.
And by "so on" I mean that every system app uninstalled results in a bootloop
The only thing I could uninstall was the precomed Facebook app

You are doing it wrong...
you are just uninstalling apks. there are folders on /system/app which contains oat, if you uninstall just apk there will be bootloop
If you have twrp then goto file manager of twrp and goto /system then app or priv-app and goto folder of that specific app for example you want to delete google drive then open google drive folder and give Chmod 777 permission to that folder *THIS IS COMPULSORY* then delete the entire google drive folder...
This is what that script do...
Please hit thanks if i help you ????

You can uninstall all the Google system apps, which are available in the play store.. So that you can install and uninstall anytime you want to.. But see to that you don't do that to play store, play services or the framework..

I need to give chmod permission to the folder I delete or to the outer folder?
And I give the permission through twrp? (I have the zcx twrp)

For deleting those apps (uninstalling = deleting apps, isn't the right way)
By what iceman says, it need to be done by the permission delete

Not necessarily, you should do from recovery.. Instead, Boot up the phone.. Install Link2SD or other root app manager.. Grant root permissions to it.. Clear the data of the system app.. Uninstall it.. Simple

easier...just flash these scripts....no bootloops here.
Slightly off-topic I had this problem with a similar device. After rooting my phone I installed a system-app-uninstaller to get rid of the "Google App". Removing this specific app caused continuous boot looping.
To avoid this, I duckduckgo'd the problem and found this anonymous closed&deleted (but ingenious) post at Reddit:

[deleted] 2 points 2 years ago
Hey! I figured out a way to delete the app(using root of course) without causing a bootloop. The secret is to go to Settings>Apps>Advanced(In the top right)>Deafult Apps>Assist & voice input>None. After doing that, reboot, and then u can delete the app
}
Yes i made the mistake of changing the setting to "None" and then immediately uninstalling it.
Don't do that!
After restoring my twrp backup for the millionth time, I changed the setting to "None", rebooted my phone, disabled and force-stopped the service, rebooted my phone... And then uninstalled it. Victory!
