Samsung galaxy note i717. I rooted my phone yesterday as I also updated from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. I have learned a few things about roms, kernels, backing up, restoring, etc.
I have SUPER SU, titanium backup, and ROM manager.
I understand that all rooted phones must have a SU to grant apps access to the software.
As for titanium backup, I have deleted bloatware and backed up and verified all of my information. I also bought the pro version of titanium backup. But for the Rom manager, I'm not too sure how to use that yet. I guess Titanium is for backing up and restoring, and ROM manager is for downloading the new rom?
To get a new rom (someone please recommend one to me? Specifically for good battery life and a customizable UI)
So you have to download it from the computer, then move to your SD card. Afterwards, the computer part is done right? How do you get the phone in the mode to put in the new rom? And do you have to wipe the stock rom first?
Someone please please recommend me a rom and tell me step by step how to do it without bricking my phone... And to restore everything back.

ROM Manager installs the CWM recovery on your device, it's a little tool that we use for installing zips with ROMs, kernels and stuff like that.
You have to get the ROM on the internal or external SD, and then go to the recovery mode. You can do this by pressing a button combo when the device is booting or you can also get to it with ROM Manager. Select "apply update from sdcard", and after this select "install zip from sdcard" (or "install zip from external sdcard" if you have your flashable zip in the external sd). Browse for your zip and select it to apply it.
To restore everything back, you have to make a nandroid backup before installing a new ROM. After you entered the recovery, select "backup and restore" and then select "backup". Just wait a little and it's finished.
A custom ROM I highly recommend is CyanogenMod, and you can also try AOKP.

I was in Clockwork Recovery after backing up my stock system (this is my first time) it gave me the options in green text: Reboot, reinstall update.zip, etc.
I chose reboot and everything loaded up fine and after checking in Rom Manager I have a backup of my system. I just want to know if that was the right choice. or should I have reinstalled update.zip
I guess my question revolves around update.zip.
What is that file? I know I originally used it to gain root access but do I need to reinstall it from clockwork recovery everytime before rebooting? and when should I delete it? and are there any negative consequences for not doing either?

I think you are fine. I would not worry so much, i have deleted the update.zip, but since you booted up into ClockWork Recovery you are most likely fine.
I am booted back up completely and the stock os is running and I'm still rooted. I just want to know what that option inside of clockwork recovery means. What is the reason to reinstall update.zip from clockwork recovery and what is the reason to reboot? And once I'm booted back up and running when/why do I go into my files and delete update.zip?
It's not that I'm worried...I just want to know why I'm doing what I'm doing.
I would keep the file. Less chance of failure.
You are only going to use cwr for this:
Backup/restore system
Wipe cache, factory wipe, etc
Flashing rom's (install from sd card)
Don't worry about the other stuff.
I'm confused by the op, not sure how you made a backup from how it reads.
I think I made the backup by flashing into clockwork recovery from rom manager. It started with the purple text recovery mode and I hit reinstall packets. Then it went into the green text clockwork recovery....I think. I've only done it once.
So in clockwork recovery I choose the backup/restore option and then the backup option. So then the phone I assume began the backup process and displayed many lines of white text. At the very end it said something about not being able to mount my ext sd card (which) had me worried.....but then it brought up the menu again. The top option was reboot, the second was reinstall update.zip and I didn't pay attention to the rest because I was pretty sure I needed one of the first two....I just didn't know which one. I selected reboot and the phone then booted into the stock os and was still rooted. Is the fact that it wasn't able to mount my ext sd card at the end of the backup process an issue? I'm able to find a backup in rom manager. Also, if the backup process works correctly should the phone reboot by itself?
What I'm asking is what am I booting from when I choose "reboot" from clockwork recovery and what does it mean to choose "reinstall (packet?) update.zip"? I thought update.zip was what I needed to root.
This last step wasn't in your tutorial (purple text menu) so maybe something didn't go as it should have.
I'm not sure.

The update.zip in the root of the internal SD card is clockwork recovery (CR). When you install CR it does not overwrite your phone's recovery. What it does is install that update.zip in the root of the SD card. When you want to use CR, you need to "update packages" which will flash that update.zip which contains the CR package. That will load CR into memory only and still does not overwrite the original recovery on the phone. When you reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, it automatically reboots and applies the update.zip and places you into CR. If you enter recovery manually (via buttons on boot), you will need to "re-install packages" from the stock recovery to get CR.
So if you want to use CR, keep that update.zip in the root of the SD card. If you erase it, you will need to re-install it (using ROM Manager) before you can use CR instead of the stock recovery. I hope that makes sense. If not, here is the explanation straight from Koush on how it works.

^^ You are all good then.
The SD-EXT is not going to backup, because you do not have a partiotion on your external SD card (no need for one, like some other phones require). This is normal from what you described.
You will never use the apply update.zip option in CWR... just dont pay any mind to it.
When you select reboot system now, that is all it is.... you are basically saying "Cool, I did everything I needed to do (backup/flash a rom/wipe, etc)... and now I am ready to reboot my phone... ie, you are basically cutting your phone on.
Positive you did, but you can open rom manager, click on manage backups and you should see a file there that has a format kinda like YYYYMMDDTIME, that is the backup you made... no action needed, just an easy way to verify you made a backup of your system.

I got confused with the fact that I need to delete the update.zip file after rooting and the fact thats its there again after flashing cw and backing up.
Sometimes I need things spelled out for me. Makes complete sense now.

make a backup, once you flash, there is no going back unless you restore a backup or flash another kernel.
the process requires you download the .zip, place it on your sdcard. boot into recovery and flash the zip. I definitely recommend wiping your cache/dalvik otherwise you might get bootloops or something odd.
if you do get bootloops, just restore the backup and try again.
Assuming you have ROM manager installed, just place the .zip file of the kernel in the root folder of your memory card and select the "Install ROM from SD card" option. Then find the file in the next screen, click on it and make sure you click "Backup Existing ROM" in the next screen, that way you can always go back to your old kernel.

So many good choices out there already its hard to choose. Adrynelyne and ziggy both make very solid kernels, just do your homework and read everything you can before jumping into something like that and I'm sure you'll find a good one that meets your needs.
I am new to rooting and I wanted to flash another ROM other than the stock one after rooting. I followed the steps given to root my TB and that was cake. Thanks for the simplicity. I am now looking to add the Virus ROM but not 100% confident in how to do this. There are several steps given for other devices but I have yet to see one for the TB. If someone could point me in the right direction or link me to the actual steps that would be appreciated.
Install Clockwork Recovery
Boot into CWR
Select "wipe data/factory reset"
Select "yes -- delete all data"
Go back using the softkey
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Find and select your desired ROM
Reboot
Download the rom you want which will be store on your phones SD Card in Downloads then make a Backup of the rom you have now . Go into Rom Manager and select backup current Rom , you'll get a pop up were you can name the rom whatever you want , let it do it's thing , it will backup then restart the phone. When the phone restarts go into rom manager again and select Install Rom From SD Card , it will take you to your SD Card where you'll go into Download where the rom is stored , select the rom you downloaded you'll get a pop up which will ask if you want to wipe , check wipe and then ok . Let it do it's thing again when it down it will restart and ask you to set up you accounts just follow the steps . When everything is set up go in to the market and select My Apps you should see all your application downloading give them some time to download. Then it's all up to you to set up your home screens .
Don't forget to wipe the cache partition , and also select advanced and wipe dalvik cache. I would do all the steps listed above and these 2x, just to be on the safe side.

I think I understand what's happening on the phone when I do this but wanted to make sure. Other than the usual disclaimers about risk of bricking, is there anything else I need to know?
just in case you didn't know how you hold volume down and the power button to get to hboot and then pick recovery from there. otherwise if you just want easy download rom manager from the market

I don't have any backups so I want to install ROM MANAGER from market, I read HERE that if i want to upgrade I need to go go back to stock (I'm really don't know how this version get to the phone and somehow the ROM MANAGER not there...)
Do I must go back to stock or I can download ROM MANAGER, Install it and make something like "Upgrade" - I don't know what is the voodoo lagfix and do I need to uninstall it if I want to:
1. install ROM MANAGER and preform Backup & Restore (most important how to verify my backup OK )
2. Move to Trigger 3.2

This says it all, but since you are a noob
by wipe, he means to wipe everything (data(factory reset), cache, delvik cache(thats on the advanced options)
As for the titanium backup if you dont know how to use it, just youtube it or go over the threads here
Finally when doing the flash, make sure the trigger 3.2 file is on the sd card
And NO you dont have to go back to stock
1. Do all this without using the Rom Manager?!?!?!? - If I want to install it just download & Install, no any pre-requisit ?

I checked your guide and even see the video and I have Q, about the "Rom Manager", I saw In your video that you Use it...
Someone told me that my current ClockWorldMod Recovery is old and I should upgrade it... (I couldn't find in the net \ this forum how to upgrade my current version...).
Someone told me:
1. download from market
2. install it with ROOT
3. click "Flash Clockwork Recovery" and boot to recovery
4. Re-install Packages - I DON'T HAVE THIS OPTION NOW
and from there like in your guide: backup,make all the Wipe, place rom on sd and choose "install zip from sd card"
1. Is it true and should work?
2. should I follow those steps (in this order)
3. should I make a backup before and after I download and "Flash Clockwork Recovery"
4. If I follow this orders should I see the "Re-install Packages" that I don't see now and should I need to use it ?

You have the red voodoo recovery. You do not need anything else. Ignore Rom Manager and all that, you really do not need it, because your ROM replaced this recovery with the stock one. You are good.
Just download the rom
make backups
go flash the rom

After you flash the rom, let it just sit for about 10 minutes, then reboot, don't mess with the phone.
5. Restore = Restore what?Your apps if you backed them up... restore your launcher, contacts if you dont use google.. whatever you want to restore, just not system apps (green system apps like wifi and bookmarks should be okay though, exception to the rule for 2.2 > 2.2)

I make all install (without SIM on the phone).
after the reboot I saw the Android and after few scondes he say to inset sim....

1. Install the ROM with a SIM card in...or if you didn't, insert it like it asks you to.
2. ROM Manager IS clockwork recovery. It is that menu you went into to flash the rom (can be green or red depending on your kernel installed). You don't need ROM Manager because whoever had the phone before you already installed ROM Manager at some point and hence, you have the Clockwork Recovery now as you saw.
3. After you install the new ROM, the boot up will take a long time. It is setting up all the system and configuring the operating system. After it finally boots, leave your phone for 10 minutes and just don't touch it. This gives it time to do a lot of configuration stuff it needs to do when it first starts up. After the 10 minutes are up, restart it. It will now start a lot quicker (like normal) and when its up, you can use it anyway you want. Hence, some first things to do would be to restore your contacts, programs (if you backed them up, settings, etc)
3. I really recommend you read a little bit more before you do flashing like this next time because if people here are not nice and don't lead you by the nose (or if you follow a step wrong), you can **** your phone. The procedure is easy. It is fairly foolproof but it is still advised that you have basic knowledge of what you are doing.
There are a lot of sticky threads on the forums that explain what things are. I recommend you have a look.

OMG!!!!!! Just follow the instructions! It's not rocket science; geez. I know of most noobs who wouldn't even ask this many questions even AFTER the guide/tutorial/step-by-step instructions are in front of them. I give you my word that you WILL NOT brick your Vibrant just by trial and error.

I don't understand why you are so set on the CWR upgrading.... and just an FYI, the red recovery (.3) is a higher version than via Rom Manager (.2).
Be happy. Move on to something else now that YOUR PHONE IS FINE

Ok. i followed the guide at the top of this forum to root my device. Everything seemed to work peachy. No errors, no nothing. I then attempted to use CWR to install Cyanogenmod 7.1. I used the guide on the Cyanogenmod wiki ***Link removed because of posting rules***
Because I rooted from here and installed CWR, I started at the part near the bottom.
Download the latest version of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.
Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card.
Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.
Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and either the power button or the trackball to select.
Optional: Select backup and restore to create a backup of current installation on the Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T).
Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
Select Choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T) should now boot into CyanogenMod.

The problem i have though is that when my device boots, it goes to the Samsung Splash screen and sits there with a yellow exclamation point. Does nothing else.
i did boot back into CWR and run my backup, so my phone is back, but I'm still clueless as to what would cause this. Any help please.

I did just notice something. The Zip for Cyan is titled "Update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2ATT-signed.zip". Does that mean it's an update and not the full install?
