[Q] Which phone to choose? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello y'all, I've been having a hard time trying to choose an Android phone. I've used some before, but this would be my first Android phone.
My budget is capped up to $170 (Yeah, really tight)
Phones I've been looking at are:
HTC Desire C
LG Optimus L5 E610
Sony Xperia E
Alcatel One Touch X'Pop
If there are other phones within the range, I'd appreciate that.
I'm not the type to take a lot of pictures, probably occasionally but not much. I'll mostly be playing games or reading e-books on it.

I think that Sony Xperia E is the best choice for this amount of money. It has best CPU and 4GB of memory.

I see. I'll check on that phone around local stores here.
Oh and also are there phones on par with those 3 within the $170 budget?
Thanks

Just looked at the Alcatel One Touch X'Pop (Alcatel Sapphire 2 here), and the specs are pretty convincing. It's around $169.87(converted to USD) here. Has anyone bought the phone? If it isn't that bad, I'll go with it instead of the Xperia E. If not, then the Xperia E is what I'm still getting.

I think the Alcatel is much better than others, since it have a big screen with good resolution (4.5'', 540x960pix). Its chipset (MTK6577)... well... isn't impressive despite its 2 cores, but also is much better than others.

If you're only buying it sim-free (which I assume you are, cause those phones aren't high end) then why don't you try second hand/ refurbished even better. I got my Desire Z for £40, and for $170 (~£85) you could do much better.

How good is a refurbished phone? For that price I could probably get a second hand phone with better specs, but I fear that the previous owner may have mishandled it.

A refurbished phone is a better option, because it means that, in the worse case, it had a defect but is now fixed, so should be like new. The packaging could possibly be damaged. BEWARE only buy grade A refurbished products, on eBay for example some are listed as B or C and these really aren't very good. You could try second hand, it's a bit risky though, my Desire Z is knackered (far worse than if I would've treated it) but it did mean I got it really cheap. Also it's slightly risky 'cause someone could run off with your money and then block the IMEI. So it's basically a balance of risk. Refurbished should be cheaper and good quality though, second hand is far riskier.

[Q] Cheap 2nd hand Android phone with great ROM support

I'm looking for a secondary phone primarily so that I can use it for playing around with custom Android ROMs. This means the phone must be cheap since I'm not super rich and can't spend lots of money on a secondary "toy phone". It also has to be supported by a bunch of ROMS, so that there is something to play with I don't really have an overview of the ROM world and that's why I'm asking for help here.
That's pretty much the only requirements that I have it definitely doesn't have to be a new nor well speced phone. Since the availability of second hand phones where I live obviously will vary I'd like as many suggestions as possible.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into it and keep it in mind. What ROMs are available for it? I can see that Cyanogenmod 9 is available for it. Thats nice!
Ok. So currently I'm mainly considering HTC Legend. There's a ICS rom available for it, and I can get it rather cheap 2nd hand where I live.
Any other suggestions?

Still, they are too expensive. Then I'd rather buy a HTC Desire which is slitly cheaper but still pretty decent with great moding support.

That's a good suggestion! I didn't know about that phone at all. But isn't it a bit underpowered? The resolution is pretty high for a low end phone but the processor is not that powerful? But I've found someone who's selling it second hand for a fair price which is most important. I might buy it.
Thanks to both of you! Any other suggestions?

Well, your only after a phone to mess around with right? so I don't think speed should be your main concern. Its decent, not terribly as slow as you'd think. The resolution is a killer. The screen is very vibrant, especially if you manage to pick up a AMOLED version. My brother has one of these, and he recommends it. Its got decent dev support too!

You're right. And I BOUGHT IT! I got it second hand for what would have been 82$ (converted from my local currency). For a Wildfire S or a Legend I would've had to pay around 120$. They are similarly speced except the Blade has a much better screen that is larger and with significantly higher resolution plus I got the AMOLED version For a Desire or a Nexus One i would have had to pay around 160$.
So all in all I think I made a very good purchase and thanks a lot for drawing my attention to this neat phone which should soon land in my mailbox! It will be a nice companion for my Xperia S which I have no intention of flashing.
Also having a ZTE phone is totally hipster! Now one in my country knows that brand.

Am I stupid!?

Hi all!
Ok don't answer the title question
I own an LG G2 currently. I like the phone but I always keep my eyes on HTC ONE MAX because I really like HTC and like HTC sense.
I always like bigger screens (especially that I already sold all my tablets to condense on all my use on 1 device).
At first I bought the G2 thinking that note 3/one max are too big for me but now I'm starting to change my mind.
Am I stupid to think about such a switch?
Why?! For 3 simple reasons:
1- I bought G2 32GB from USA and cost me around 650$ with all additional tax/shipping fees.
If I wanna sell it now, I doubt it can be sold for even 500$, I fear lower much more like 400 or 450$ max because it has low resale value in my country.
2-If I accepted such loss:
the note 3 offering S800, 3GB ram, WACOM + Spen, 32GB+SDCARD and all those additional software features (mostly gimmick however) cost around 660$ while
while HTC one max (and you know what it offers) cost around 690$.
3-Does the one max offer any new/additional experience/featuresthat my G2 doesn't!?
As far as I know, G2 is much more feature packed than the One max.
So as you can see, it's quite sad really to see that HTC phones are always overpriced! (one of many reasons why they don't sell well anymore)
I dunno, I really have mixed feelings and would be glad if anyone has an experience in this matter or can help me.
Thanks.

I was just thinking the same thing. All of a sudden these are popping up everywhere.
I think what is happening is that a lot of people are looking for alternatives to the Samsung stuff, and, after reading a lot of the initial reviews, that were not complimentary to this phone, those same people are now seeing all sorts of great things about this great phone, and are thinking about getting one.
I'm glad I made that decision in November!

LG G2 - worth buying?

Hello guys!
I'm thinking about buying this phone, because my HTC Desire S is dying slowly...
Is it worth buying? Can somebody point me some annoying details/disadvantages? Phone seems to be nice, but I don't want to regret spent money later...

i have mine since last week and it´s a good phone
just one thing i don´t like is built full of plastic sory for my english i´m from portugal
not worth it :/
2 days using it, and i'm like: "man, why did i get this phone :/ ?", the camera is really bad, and just one of the chips support 3g, the other is just 2g :/
and as you see, it still doesn't have other roms and etc.
i was needing a dual-chip, and i think we do not have a super nice choice for it :/

First thing that you need to consider is what are you looking for in a device, how you'll gonna use it, are you a mobile device gamer, what kind of games do you play on your device, etc. Once you have all your answer, check the details and specification of the device you wanted and verify if it can handle your needs. As for the LG G2 mini, the camera is sub par though it is quite okay for me since I don't take pictures regularly. It may be a mid range device, but it can quite handle some of the new games (not all but some) and HD movies due to the low pixel density of the screen which the gpu does not exert to much effort to load it. There are also some very nice preloaded application that I find it useful such as QuickRemote, QuickApps, Guest Mode, Wireless printing, Radio, Knock Code etc. Almost everything the LG G2 has this device have it also except for the ambient light sensor, notification LED on the power button, Dual Recording, and other unique features that the LG G2 has.
my previous phone were note 2, the screen was too big and I was looking for "optimal" phone for me, but I dont wanted samsung. I found G2 Mini and it's worth to buy, I've him for 3 days. UI is smooth, fast, camera is good, battery life is 3 times longer than note 2
If I will be able to buy that phone second time will I do that ... ?
yes, 7/10 from me,
Small resolution and no LED are big disadvantages, but I can live with it.
Sorry for English, Im not so good
In my opinion most users will be happy with this phone, nice and fast UI, nice gaming experience, good battery etc. but unfortunately there are some problems that excludes this phone from using by some kind of people (like me).
GPS is worse than every device I ever had.
No USB OTG support (LG says that there is no hardware support for that)
No ambient light sensor and no LED indicator.

Is it worth buying a Z Ultra?

I currently rock an LG G3 and while I love the screen and phone model, I can't stand the software at all, it is laggy and horrible, I've compared it to a Z Ultra via youtube video and I'm loving the look of the phone already!
Z Ultra's are currently retailing for £250 brand new and I'm ready to purchase, but a genuine question, what are the massive cons of owning the phone and is it still worth it at this price?

Cons:
As you said it is MASSIVE
Staying on stock Xperia ROM there is poor (none for 4.4.4) custom kernel choice
Did I said MASSIVE :silly:
Rest you can tell from specs

I'm surprised the G3 is laggy, but it may be to do with the high res screen.
The Z ultra is definitely not laggy, and is the best phone i've owned. I came from an LG phone (Optimus 4X HD) and hated LG's skinning of Android. Sony's efforts are far more impressive and although I've tried the GPE Rom (Stock Android) I came back to Sony's firmware within a day.

I bought my original Z Ultra for £549 at the beginning of last year and I loved the phone back then paired with the Smartwatch 2. I sold it back then but have just bought another brand new black one for £250, I use this as a tablet rather than a phone, I don't have the Smartwatch 2 this time.
I must admit that having been through a few phones since I sold it I'm a little disappointed with the KitKat firmware on my new Z Ultra, the display feels a little dim at 100% brightness but overall I think it's amazing value for money and great for watching Sky Go. I just love the sheer size of the phone but it does require a huge pocket to carry it around in.

There are atleast 2 different LCD panels that have been used. One has better contrast.
I just got the phone from amazon and I got it cheap from warehouse deals. First impressions, amaizing....
It was the cheapest most powerful device I found. I bought it for 250€ Not bad, considering what it offers
Its size isnt bothering me, I fear for the possibility of it breaking,
I've truly been debating about buying this, Z Ultra GPE, since it came out. Now that it can be purchased on the cheap it's making it harder not to. My main concern is; Android L? Will Google and Sony make the update available for the Z Ultra? I have a Nexus 5 (nothing wrong with it) but I've always wanted a phablet. Then again the next Nexus could be either 5.2-.9 inches so that could ease my phablet want... IDK, what do yous peoples thinks?

I'd say the Z Ultra, excellent build quality and a better processor not to mention these days they go for real cheap.

Why did you choose the Desire 610?

I was just wondering what are all of your stories with the desire 610? was it recommended by a friend?
Personally I spent an hour on the phone with an AT&T Rep. I first asked for advice on what android phone to buy, the Rep said "buy the S6 Edge+. its the best android phone period." after four different *EXPENSIVE* recommendations (LG G4, S6, iPhone 6, HTC one M9) the rep was like "ok you want a cheap phone? get the Desire 610." after about a day of reading/watching reviews I bought the phone. every review i saw failed to mention that the MOTO E is also at a low price and is better than this phone (a friend has the MOTO E). so what convinced you to buy this phone?
Why I chose the Desire 610
I originally thought it would be a great idea, like those times you write a really important paper and it sounds good, but the next day you present it in front of many people and as you read it, you wonder what you were thinking and if you were even completely sane at the time. I was at an AT&T store in Oregon and thought "oh great, no tax, ill just get a new phone!!". Buuuuut unlike you, I didnt talk with a representative, I just thought "ohh it looks nice, and stuff so desire 610, i choose you". When I took it home, I realized why it wasnt on demo mode... It couldnt handle it... with about 1gig of ram, less than 4gb of free space, and a bootloader thats a pain in the rear to unlock plus, I had to port a custom rom (as there wasnt one at all), i decided to promptly do research... on the perfect phone for me. I was happy with my sony xperia tl lt30at, more so than with the quad core 610... and it was a dual core!!! I finally decided to settle with the oneplus one, and that is what I am rockin right now . LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Highly recommended!
I was a total phone noob. Like TOTALLY! I came from a BlackBerry Bold 9780. I wanted to upgrade. I bought the 610 from best buy and they activated it on att. When I saw the desire 610 on ATT's website, I was like "ooooohhhh". So at best buy, they said the 610 was not there yet. They offered me the new one m8!!!!!!! Like I said, I did not know anything about it, and thinking the 610 was top of the line, I refused. That was the dumbest decision of my life. Haha. The phone seemed snappy, but soon, it was absolute ****. Low space, lag, etc. I rooted and waited for a ROM. Around a year later (I think) slimkat came out and I installed it. Was loving it, but it was buggy. Then MiniBlu's cm11 came out and I was saved. I still wanna upgrade terribly though. Im looking at the G3. Around $190 eBay new. I'm considering using my sisters s3. It outperforms this phone is every way(maybe not battery life. Hah).

Still regret not picking the m8. Haha

yup that bootloader is a pain. thats why i kept the Unlock_code.bin file. The oneplus one is nice, but sadly its an unlocked phone. and paying $23 per month for 30 months is a better option than paying 400 upfront. at least thats my preference. plus AT&T Next upgrade options do discount a fair bit of the price. My next upgrade is probably going to be either the LG V10 or the Galaxy S6 Edge. they are both really nice and speedy phones, but they lack ROMs. sadly as unlocked/switching carriers is not an option for me, I have to go with one of those. but the V10 does look nice.

My next upgrade is probably going to be either the LG V10 or the Galaxy S6 Edge. they are both really nice and speedy phones, but they lack ROMs. sadly as unlocked/switching carriers is not an option for me, I have to go with one of those. but the V10 does look nice.

Naw, at&t still thinks I'm on my a3ul, so I'm paying just for the regular plan of 10 gigs a month plus unlimited text and call + text internationally. Every time I show up at the at&t store, I just put the sim I'm my desire and have the opo in my back pocket ?.
I choose it because the moto g is not available in my country and i dont lke samsung or blu other brand u get easily and was not gonna send a couple months pay on an iphone.
BTW bootoader is very easy to unlock using windriod.. Using my 610 with cm 11

Yes you're correct. Windroid is the fastest.

Haha

instead of the LG G3 wait for the G5 release where the G4 will have a price reduction. anyways I preffer the V10 over both. but given those choices I would say the G4 is good. nearly the same specs as the V10

Yeah you're right. I'm probably not gonna be upgrading in until maybe 2 years.

Im going to upgrade this summer. I'm waiting for the G5 release so I can compare my options by price/features. and looks. If the G5 is anything like the rumors I think it will look terrible. Hope that LG will use the design of the V10 on the G5. that would look so much better in my opinion.

The added images are rumor pics. I personally think both look horrible.

Looks like and unfinished g3 or g4 design. Agree it's too ugly.
I got it because I couldn't afford anything more at the time lol

Ohh man those are worse than the s6... how do phone manufacturers not realise that if u put ur phone down its either on the screen ( nobody wants that ) or on the back, and when the cam and everything is sticking out it gets killed by the table... I understand hat hose are rumor pics, but the fact that people would consider that is just sad...
I bought it because the moto E and moto G had been sold out. I don't regret getting this phone since it only cost me a dollar, I mainly use it for playing music now since the internal DAC is actually pretty stable for a low end device.
I found mine on a shelf at walmart with no passcode. I had been on a flip phone since my iphone 4 broke in 2012. The 610 was a nice upgrade. Not sure why people would have a smart phone with no passcode. Logged into their facebook an' evrthang. Then leave it on a shelf in walmart.
$54 with LTE, AptX, 128GB microSD
best option under my contract
It was the best option under the contract I had with EE UK and I don't regret. It cost me £10 and two years contract; got it one and a half year ago. Now, after rooting and trying several custom roms, I found an HTC stock rom that give me a few extra possibilities. Quality of music player and camera is very good, and I minimized the issue of the low memory with link2sd and external sd.
Good money value
I had a HTC One S and it served my very well for 4 years, i didnt really want to replace it, but battery started getting weak. So i started looking. I didnt have the money to buy a high end phone again, but i got used to htc Sense.
So i stumbled upon the Desire 610 on ebay for just 49€. I just had to buy it.
Until now i am quite happy about it. The screen is a bit dissapointing, when you are used to the AMOLED from the One S.
But everything is now fresh and snappy.
Another Advantage of the plastic made 610 is the low SAR-Value of 0,3.
The Aluminum Unibody of the One S gives you high quality but also high radiaton.
I originally bought this phone becuase it had decent specs for what i could afford and its media ability was far above the others in my price range. though i hadnt done my research when i first purchased it and was sad to find no support for a while. though i can say it was a good phone. and now that it has some support i still have fun trying to brick it now and again!(though my daily is now a nexus)
