[Q][Discussion] What ROM are you using and why? - Motorola Droid X2

I'm surprised that there isn't one of these for Droid X2 yet. So what ROM do you plan to use and why did you chose it over others?

I'm using Molten 2.3 Redux because I think it is very stable, everything works.

I'll start, haha. I used to use CM7, but when I got a hankering for something a little updated, I switched to CM10. 7 was quite a bit quicker, but 10 makes up for it with JB. I've tried out the other big gingerbread ones (molten, liberty) and ics roms (cm9, pa) but I really like cm10 as my daily now. Anyway, theres my spiel. If you have any questions I'm still on the dx2 and I'd like to connect with the few users still out there.

I just replaced my x2 with a gnexus (woo cheap new old phones). Used a bunch of roms, from eclipse 1.1 to 2.3 to cm7 9 and 10. Currently I'm on Liberty because it seems like the fastest stable phone (which is what I want from my soon to be backup phone). Overall though, I'd say my go to ROM is cm7. It's stable enough and is still full of features. cm9 and 10 are amazing glimpses into ics and jb but it honestly is just too slow/full of problems that I can't stomach it.

if there was some solution to the phone call issue (losing audio/call after proximity sensor turns screen off), i would have stayed on cm10 as well. i use cm9 instead because of battery life (being about twice as long as cm10) and the issue i just mentioned. i also like to use chrome, and falcon pro. besides those, i dont use many apps, so cm9 is pretty stable for me. occasionally , it will reboot when overloaded. but that is not more than once every couple days. not to mention the reboot thing has been an issue on every rom i have ever tried on this phone. including all of the GB ones. :silly:
honsestly, regardless of what rom you are using, this phone runs SO SO / kinda crappy at best. it is just lacking hardware wise, which is why it will never see an update, and for the most part developers have abandoned it. it was fun while it lasted though. it wasnt a horrible enough experience to turn me away from android. but god has it been dissapointing.

[Q] Which ROM should I choose?

Right now I've been happy running the Droid X2's stock Motorola Android 2.3.4 (rooted). That has met my needs (and wants) but only in a "meh" kind of way. After seeing some of the screenshots and user reviews about some alternative Android builds out there, I decided it's time to give one a try. Awhile ago, there were only one or two different ROMs for the X2 so the choices were limited, but simple. Now, I'm seeing some awesome things like CM7 running on the X2.
I'd really like to dual boot, if possible. That way, if the other ROM is crashing too much, or killing the battery, I can switch back when I need to. Is this possible with, say, CM7? I've also heard some good things about Eclipse. Namely stability. Stability isn't the highest priority for me, as long as it works most of the time.
So, what do you think is the best alternative ROM out there for the X2 for someone who is willing to try something unstable but still usable? If it can dual boot (if that's even possible on the X2) with my currently installed stock ROM, that'd be a big plus.
EDIT: I've also been looking into MIUI, but I'm not sure if the nice design is enough to sway me.
There isn't really anything you can do as far as dual booting goes with the x2. What you could do, is create a backup using BSR and then flash between those backups. You'd still need to have a wall charger to change between the two, but it works. it's what I've been doing with MIUI because I still want HDMI mirroring.
Cm7 is very stable and it's what i use. There are only a few things that aren't functioning, but they are minor and won't cause any frustration for most. If you were satisfied with stock blur then you will love cm7. My first choice for blur based roms is eclipse. Very stable, very reliable and an overall great experience.
Dual booting would essentially be nandroiding like skel said. I've run into issues doing this with cm7 though, md5 got messed up but it works for most and has worked for me before.
Enjoy flashing your new roms, it becomes an addiction quickly.

That's probably what I'll do. Make a backup and start the adventure. Haha.
Just installed CM7. What a beast.
Its incredible isn't it. Like one of the worlds wonders but in electronic form.

cm7 is indeed a beast. took my phone a few days a wipes to get used to it but im running strong now.
My only concern with it right now is battery performance.
Go to the market and download Battery Calibration. Once downloaded charge all the way to 100% and run the app. I was on Eclipse and now run CM7 and will never look back. It's way faster and my battery life is great.
Thanks, I'll give it a go.
I'm with you; I am ready to try something new. I hope to be running CM7 by this weekend if not sooner. We have so many good choices right now compared to a few months ago. I think I will stick with 2.3.4 based ROM's for now of which CM7 is one. It seems the Eclipse is now based on 2.3.5. Since there is no official release of this yet I plan to wait on it. Enjoy the awesome cheap upgrade for your phone; I know I will.

Getting fairly good battery on this ROM too. Pleasantly surprised.

[Q] Eclipse vs CM7 - Which is better?

I couldn't find an answer to this after searching, and I really wasn't sure which is better, so I'm just going to ask.
Eclipse or CM7? Pretty straight forwards... please say why also! Thanks in advance.
You can not go wrong with either one. Both are great and are solid daily drivers. If you need HDMI then eclipse is for you. Cm7 is blazing fast and has so many options for themes and the theme Chooser. But eclipse also has great themer's as well. I would recommended having nano back up of each and go back and forth and see what fits you best. But you will really enjoy both.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I agree, both of them are known to be solid ROM's - each with their advantages and disadvantages...
HMDI I've never even used, and don't plan on it. Many things people have a "problem" with are things that I don't use, such as HDMI, GPS (seldomly use), etc.
Right now I'm flashing Eclipse 2.1.
What I did is run one for a few weeks and get it running how I like. Then nano back up and then try another for a few weeks. Get it like you want and do another back up. At one time point I had several roms backed up. Now I stick with eclipse and cm7. If you have never used cm7 it is something you should run at some point. It is blazing fast and you can customize everything. It will take you weeks to figure out all the settings.
even though I run CM7 now, I would say eclipse is an overall "better" rom in terms of supporting all the phone's features and being stable, like rock solid stable (was more stable than stock motoblur, and a bazillion times faster)
I would definitely call CM7 a beta, it has bugs, you learn to live with them.
My favorite overall so far was eclipse 1.3rc2
Eclipse FTW
I've been on both ROMs recently and I would have to say that they are both superior to any thing else out there. I'm on the latest ROM for eclipse and all I can say is that this is fast... very fast on the DX2. You can't go wrong with either ROM, it comes down to HDMI support and then your preference.
CM7 definitely fastest but went back to eclipse for hdmi, stability and nuance voice control. Still have some problems with eclipse but allot less than cm7. One drawback of eclipse is 2.3.5 kernel, so when nandroiding have to sbf to switch roms.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA
I use eclipse 2.1 on my X2. I had previously use CM7 for a month before switching. Yes CM7 is much faster, but Eclipse is more stable and has less bugs.
It's all about personal preference.

+100!! I think this is the best option. Try them both out, and back them up. I am running CM7 and love it. Yes, it's lightning fast, but that isn't even my favorite feature. I prefer its customization overall. It has bugs, as a beta will, but I haven't experienced any that are deal breakers for me.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Great deal of help to me (and I'm sure others).
Right now I'm running Eclipse 2.1 (I previously had Eclipse 2.0.2). From what I've seen so far I can notice a speed improvement overall, some updates and GREAT stability; much better than even the stock.
Later on I'll try out CM7, but I'm just worried about all the bugs it has... I'm sure it's nothing, but I'd rather have slightly less performance and stability. Either way, I'm still going to try it out sometime soon. Thanks again for all your feedback.
Also, I'm not into nandroid backups at all.. or any backups. I'd rather do a clean slate EVERY SINGE TIME. I don't have a ton of apps, so I can get it all back, along with my settings very easily. Just and FYI for you all.
EDIT: Also, just to clarify things - along with give people other information; I will be writing a FULL review of each ROM. Note that many of this will contain personal opinions and such, but it will greatly help people overall with info about them.

I felt the same way about sbf and re root not a huge deal but yes extra time. I heard people had luck with 2.04 on 2.3.4. I had to try and all was working well. Have not tried that with 2.1 but do a nano back up first just in case and remember it is not recommended but it has worked for quite a few people just not sure for 2.1.
Miui works on 235/412 and I nanded to cm but did not stay long but wifi worked.

What's so bad about Stock rom

I've tried most of the roms in the development section, and I'm not knocking the dev who are creating some great roms, but I keep coming back to the stock rom. What's so bad about keeping stock. I mean once the roms in the dev section get all the kinks worked out (mms), I'm sure I'll be going to them, but stock so far seems to work really well. My battery life is decent, and everything works. I do like the MUI rom though, just the mms issue, is keeping me from running it as a daily rom. Just thought, I'd give some props to the stock rom.
Its all personal preference. I personally cant stand blur it drives me nuts, CM9 and nearly ever other has working mms(-MIUI for now) and im a huge CM fan ever since I first flashed CM7. Whatever works best for your uses really.
i jus dont like stock roms at all. they have too much bloatware on them i think
My phone is laggy with the stock rom but Im not willing to lose 4G to run something else. Im just holding on till Sprint has a better phone and I can retire the Photon.
same for me. CM and MIUI jus run so much smoother
Maybe I need to try then newer versions out. I'm using launcher pro on my stock and it seems smooth
In my experience, on the Photon you do not need anything other than stock. Stock runs GREAT. Every custom ROM I have tried has issues.
However, most of my other Android phones really needed custom ROMs due to battery or other issues which hampered their performance.
The Photon is the rare phone that works fine as is.
IMO.

I like stock also but can't help myself cab use some market launchers also on Miui and cm9 just like stock
MIUI/ICS for the Photon
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1536161
Stock:
Laggy/choppy UI (this is a major sales killer. out of the box the lg optimus ui is faster/smoother)
Tons of mostly unused proprietary account services running in the background (BlurOrkut for example)
Mostly useless widgets (When most tap on a clock widget they want it to open the clock app. almost all of the blur widgets do nothing when you tap them)
If you replace the launcher, never use most of the blur services and use third party widgets then stock is a overweight and mostly useless. That being said, if you love blur and it's widgets, use most of those builtin account services then stock is the way to go.
Stock ROM completely lacks the ability to customize everything. Thats what I hate most about it.
I loaded Jokers skinnyV2, and wow, awesome. Fast, smooth and everything is working like stock. I think I found a new daily driver.
I bounce between stock and cm9 stock when I need 4g and cm9 when I want processing and better multi tasking. Not to mention cm9 has more features.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
At least once a week I feel convinced that I NEED 4G, camcorder, or mms, so I install one of the modified stock roms. This usually lasts about 30 minutes before I come to my senses and go back to an ICS rom. I've been using Joker's ICS builds since about the fourth day of owning my photon, and running any non ics rom just feels like putting lawn mower wheels on a Ferrari. Giving up a couple features that I would realistically use at most 10 minutes a week in exchange for an infinitely better user experience is a no brainer in my opinion.
I went back to stock about a month ago and could not be happier!!!! I have not had one single issue since (with exception of Sprints Network!) and the Photon is flawless!
BTW: I got butt naked too! OtterBox is off over by my desktop gaming computer I never use! Dont use my 2 laptops eithere. Nor my PS3. I gotta clean this place up!
I hated stock from day one. Its slow. I have tried just about every rom that the photon has to offer. My daily is between cm9 and MIUI. I just cant make up my mind because I like the fact that MIUI has lots of themes but cm9 is just awsome. Im about to try AOKP so ima jump off. cya
Thanks all for the replies. I think I'll try the newer cm9 and mui roms. So far I'm really liking the joker skinnyv2. I'm going to test out the cm9, mui today.
Personally, I think I, and most here, have a few issues.
#1. I rooted and unlocked it.
#2. I had 230+ apps, most I had no clue!
#3. I had 3 launchers i was bouncing back and forth.
#4. Damm thing kept freezing and I had to reboot several times a week!
#5. My Bluetooth headphones were iffy? (if thats a word!)
I put it back to stock, down to maybe 60 apps, stock UI! The 7 Panels with Stock UI I have configured with my most common apps, with screens for Business, Games, Communication, Shopping, my Social accounts.......
The speed, on 3G is amazing and I can quickly check my bank account, lottery, whatever. The only thing I have extra is Weather Toggle Widgit on home screen.
@ 4 or 5 years ago, I got into flashing/rooting/unlocking/ROM's because I wanted my phone to look/be different. With Stock Photon and some time, it is different! Besides, at the end of the day, bottom line is, I need a fully functional working phone!
JMO!
David Out!
I personally run CM7 and the reason being is that I like having the ability to customize every little detail on my phone and as far as I can tell it runs smoother then stock did for me. I will switch over to CM9 once they just get a one more kink worked out, I need to be able to watch Netflix so I'm waiting for the HW acceleration drivers to be added and then I'll be all in.
I just installed MIUI yesterday and from what I see its even MORE customizable than CM7 including three launchers and all the google apps built in. Its also based on ICS just like CM9 is.
being as im new to the photon but not new to droids ive flashed both cm7 and im currently running the latest build of cm9. that being said my phone runs so much smoother with these roms than i was stock. if it wasnt for the great devs we have for these phones and their persistent need to tweak everything i think the droid market would have crashed long ago. but it is personal preference but personally i like my phones to work 90% or more of the time, with stock i could never get the reliabilty like i could with roms.

[Q] Wanting a new ROM, cant decide.

I have Eclipse 1.1 (old I know) it was great when it first came out and I flashed it. But now I need something new bc its not working as good, and I know theres better versions and other ROMs that are possibly better.
Any suggestions on which ROM to flash and why?
Depends on what you want. If you want a fully functional ROM I'd check out the latest edition of Eclipse.
Cyanogenmod 7.2 rc1 has a small amount of bugs, but is for the most part fully functional. HDMI mirroring doesn't work and that's the one and only downside to me. I still use CM7 as a "daily driver" so to speak. Lots of customization and with the hacks/mods found in this forum I get excellent signal strength, connection speeds and battery life. Wifi still sleeps when the screen's off, but with the v3 build.prop mashup it reconnects on waking within seconds every single time.
Cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 is somewhat buggy as it's in its early alpha stages. There's no camera yet, but DZK already said there will be a fix for alpha 4. Same with aces miui. It's real slick, being on ics. I like it, but won't stay until there's a working camera and more stability. When that happens this rom will be simply amazing. Overall it's pretty sweet and at the very least, worth checking out/playing around with.....
MIUI4 will be awesome too once the bugs are sorted and fixed. As stated before- the next release will also have a working camera. MIUI is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite but right now its way too buggy for me to use. More so than cm9. Couldn't deal with the bugs Ace is hard at work bringing us more updates and when he finally gets this where he wants it MIUI will more than likely replace cm7 as my daily rom. It's a great ROM in general but I couldn't stay on miui for more than like an hour, personally.
Definitely go into each roms topic and check out the screenshots and videos if there are any. Also look for the working features and known bugs/issues. Honestly I say give them ALL a try and see what best suits you. I only really posted about the newer ones. If I remember correctly molten isn't being updated anymore after 2.3 and I keep forgetting liberty even exists, lol.......
Cyanogenmod all day
I started with Eclipse 1.3 and then went to 2.1 running scripts and about everything else with it. Then when CM9 alpha came out, I had to try it. CM9 alpha works great for me. I needed my camera, so I flashed back to CM7. When the beta version of CM9 rolls around, that's gonna be the ticket!
IMHO- CM7
I can't believe how smooth and FAST my phone is with CM7. The camera works great, very little to no lag at all with anything I have found. There's all kinds of customizations for it. I'm not running any scripts, only CM7 and SD Increase from the market. My phone is fun again and I'm not hesitant to show somebody up with a whyphone like I was before. Try it and see.

Are you pretty good with computers, tech, etc.? If you want a fast update, just flash CM7 since it is on the same kernel as the version of Eclipse you are on. If you try to update to the latest Eclipse, you have to go through the process of using the SBF to get to stock, updating to 2.3.5 then flash the new version. Its up to you though. CM7 and Eclipse are the most stable ROMs we have at the moment until some bugs get worked out in CM9.
Thanks everyone. I am on Eclipse 2.2.1 as of right now (w/speedy script 7 and other tweaks/apps). Ill probably try CM7 in the future since its already on my sdcard.

Just remember you need to be on 2.3.4 before flashing CM7.
Man I don't know what it is but.....
I used to run Eclipse 2.1 and scripted to the 23498457890345th power maxed out turnaround wing dinger squared. I thought it was as good as it could get. But when I went to CM7, I giggled at what I "thought" I had. Hands down the way to go, until CM9
I would use cm7. Just because its stable and has the best UI in my option and has pretty good performance. or you could wait for cm9 to get more stable with a working camera and better performance.
Liberty 3
Just Rooted and Flashed for the first time.
I went with Eclipse 2.2.1 - because the HDMI support was kind of a deal breaker for me. (Netflix, FPSE, SnesEX, etc. on a big screen!) But I was wondering why none of you mentioned Liberty 3? I haven't tried anything other than Eclipse 2.2.1 so I don't have an educated opinion to share, but other than CM7 it seemed like Liberty 3 and Eclipse were the two other "stable" ROMs in the DEV section.
Is Liberty "bad" or do you guys just not use it, and why?
Also, I flashed what I *thought* was the latest build of Eclipse 2.2.1 (from the official thread) but there are only 5 pull down toggles on my notification panel - I thought there were supposed to be 7? Did I miss something?

I haven't been on eclipse in a while so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I thought there was an option in settings to set those.
I can't say for sure why nobody mentioned liberty though, it might be because it doesn't offer much compared to eclipse. Also, it was supported for maybe 2 months max while I'm pretty sure nitro is still pushing out updates for the x2(somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I loved cm7 as my first and only rom but my 3g sucks, dolphin force closes, camera is buggy etc I'm going to reflash before jumping to eclipse which I've heard is most stable ...
I loved cm7 but the broken orientation sensor in the kernel killed it for me. I now run eclipse 2.2.1. It was a bugger to get installed. Having to wipe cache at a different point than instructions indicate. And also I have a little touch-screen delay.

Any stable roms for the X2?

Hey guys, just jumped ship from Sprint and put an X2 on PagePlus. I'm on day 2 with this phone and it's not bad... I'm coming from an EVO 3d and was running MIUI latest.. I'm seeing with all the roms posted here they all have querks. I'm wondering if there are any stable roms that have fully working MMS, camera, vid cam, FM, sleep, etc? I'll keep reading on my own but just curious what you guys might recommend?
I'd love to be on a stable ICS build if there is one floating around.
This really belongs in Q&A. As far as REALLY stable stuff, your best bet is a GB rom like eclipse or CM7. Everything works really nicely on those roms. The CM10 rom that Dragonzkiller ported over isn't bad, but it's got its issues. Just check out his thread.
CM7 is VERY stable. I never ran Eclipse. I will say that I have ran CM7, 9, and 10 and also ran ParanoidAndroid on CM9 and CM7 is by far the most stable and snappiest. Unfortunately I do believe this phone is starting to become obsolete and work is starting to cease on making CM9 and 10 fully stable.
Eclipse 1.3 is rock solid and I get almost 2 days of battery use out of it with a few tweaks.
Agreed, Eclipse is the most stable and all-around polished ROM for the X2. CM7 is nice, but I use my HDMI from time to time and it isn't supported.
I think I have tried them all and for me Eclipse is the best. or stock. even those have some issues. Eclipse does a reboot occasionally say once a day or two, and it has a quirk about wifi that sometimes it just goes away until i open the settings then it connects again.
I have tried eclipse 2.3, cm7 and cm10. I had wifi issues with both cm7 and cm10. I have never had a problem with eclipse 2.3. Fully functionable. Fm, mms, camera, camcorder. They all work. As for issues with wifi. Never had any. Haven't experienced any random reboots. There are also plenty of themes via adw or Holo. It just takes time searching for what you like. I'd highly recommend eclipse 2.3 though.

I just wanted to echo the votes above for Eclipse.
Personally, I think the older versions were slightly faster and better on battery life, but you really can't go wrong with Eclipse. v 2.3 has some very nice features, and I doubt you'll have many (if any) quirks with it. All the features work fine for me, with no problems. That includes all those mentioned (fully working MMS, camera, vid cam, FM, sleep) as well as HDMI, application install and storage on SD cards, etc. It's truly a wonderfully built ROM, and a lot of time has been put into making it fast, clean, and functional.
As several mentioned above, there are some other very nice ROMs out there, based on AOSP. These definitely DO have merit, but I'm not really sure if the people posting them actually read and understood the OP's question. "Stability" might be a subjective term, and in many respects those ROMS could be considered more stable than Blur or Blur-based ROMs, But it's misleading to say that those ROMs don't have glitches. AOSP ROMs have issues with MMS, camcorder, HDMI, etc. There are imperfect fixes and workarounds for some of these issues, but certainly not all.
I don't want to discourage you from trying CM7, 9, 10, AOKP or Paranoid Android ROMS. These are each amazing in their own rights. I just installed AOKP and it is absolutely beautiful!! It's smooth, and has many of the options I've always been looking for on this phone. The flip-side is that there are SO many things that just do not work or that have "quirks". Each of these roms lists the known issues, but with AOKP, I've found that there are pretty significant problems with all of the following: MMS, Google Now, input (keyboard) glitches, voice recognition/voice dialing, HDMI, SD-card apps (and SD-storage in general--don't expect backed-up app-data to be recognized by most programs), tethering (wifi-AP), camera, video camera, many apps have "texturing" that causes crashes (e.g. chrome), etc.
But I think it's important to note that DESPITE all these significant problems, the OS is so amazing and fast and beautiful, that it is really hard to decide whether or not to switch back to Eclipse, especially since it doesn't seem to have been updated in a while (at least based on the xda post...not sure about twitter and nitro's eclipse website)
Good luck flashing (ROMs) and have fun!
I've tried them all and suggest that you do the same and find out what suits you best for me it's cm7 but I do keep nanos of them all in case I start having flash withdrawals or find a new mod to try
don't be scared it's only a phone

ive tried most of them and cm7 is probably the most stable. Im running cm10 right now and it runs pretty good considering the circumstances. yes the x2 is becoming obsolete but its still a good phone with good hardware, unfortunately its true potential is locked in a cage.
Thanks for all the replies guys, I flashed Ecplise and played with it for a bit and not bad. I played around with SBF which is a new concept to me coming from yeaaaars of HTC devices.
I can't get CM10 to install I think I need to SBF to 2.3.4 before BSR. In recovery it says the zip is invalid.. I even tried downloading it again. I'll keep messing with it but yeah, trying every rom I can that looks promising.
Right now I'm back on stock rooted (nandroid backup) of 2.3.5
Last question, does data tether work if rooted?
Most roms have it baked in so yep
don't be scared it's only a phone

You must be on 2.3.4 for cm10 to work. Eclipse is the only rom out there that requires you to be on 2.3.5.

Also tethering does work if you're rooted.
