[Q] how do I install the official (but rooted) rom without restocking? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I would really like to check out the recently released i717 official rom, but i don't want to have to go through the process of backing everything up, wiping everything, running odin, risking bricking my device, and then have to move all my data back over.
Is there a version of this rom that has been rooted and zipped so i can install it with twrp like every other rom i've ever come across?
thanks in advance,
cpgeek

If you use the Kies software on your pc it will install the stock rom and save your apps and data.
If you use the stock rom in the development section by pmtr3 you can flash that as a zip and it is rooted.
But when you change a rom to a different base you should factory reset and wipe first. If you skip this procedure (called dirty flashing) you can have troubles later.

thank you for your fast reply, I apologize my search-fu rather tanked on this one d'oh
thanks again though!

Yeah buddy, the xda apps stink. I usee the odin tar from samfirmware.com to get the stock JB. This morning I flashed the pmtr3 stock on top of what I had without backups or resets. But its the same base.
At least be sure to do usual wipes. If it borks your phone you can always fix it later.

I should have spoke more carefully - I *always* run "factory reset", wipe "system" and "caches" from TWRP, it's the internal sd filesystem data that I wanted to retain which is separate from the OS image and it's active data files. I don't want to have to move around my music, pictures, app archive, etc.

You shouldn't have to worry about wiping your internal memory. I updated with kies and didn't touch my internal memory, and neither did kies. However it is recommended. I now have some extra folders that aren't being used on my internal memory. I'd delete them but last time I did that I kept getting errors. So now I make a spot on my external sd card saying "internal backup" and copy everything to it. Then I wipe internal as I do a factory reset. Once up and running I move what I need back to the internal memory from the sd backup.

CWM - Wipe data\Factory reset - Wiping all data from Internal SD

I've read some other posts where this has caused a certain amount of controversy but no post seemed to actually answer the question..
Using the Wipe data\Factory reset in ClockWorkMod Recovery has started to wipe the ENTIRE device
(excluding the external SD card)
I have flashed dozens of custom ROMs in the past and what normally happens is my external SD card contents remains safe, this still happens, no problem there, and all my personal documents such as music, pictures, videos and all other files that are not part of the actual ROM itself remain safe too.
BUT
Yesterday, i flashed a certain ROM designed to resemble the S4 (with leaked 4.2.2). Its performance was shockingly bad and other reasons caused me to flash a new ROM which i had used in the past - but when i wiped data/factory reset through CWM - ALL MY INTERNAL SD CONTENTS WHERE GONE
Things i did notice with the 4.2.2 ROM before re-flashing were that:
-When i connected it to the computer (via USB) my device was seen as i9500 (the S4)
-Also, it had created a "0\" folderto store the system ROM.
-I also noticed, wehn re-flashing, it took longer to wipe data than usual..
NOTE: I DID NOT USE THE FACTORY RESET THROUGH ANDROID SETTINGS - THIS, I KNOW, WILL WIPE THE ENTIRE INTERNAL SD, PERSONAL FILES AND ALL. THIS WAS DONE THROUGH CWM.
Because obviously the 4.2.2 ROM wiped my entire Internal SD i had no ROM packages left on it to flash and because obviously i didnt know this until i wiped/reset it involved me having to use ODIN to reflash a STOCK ROM just to be able to boot up and transfer files (ROM packages) from PC to phone - which obviously then meant i had to reflash CWM aswell before i could install the new ROM.
Final Note:
The problem i have, is that i have to do the above EVERYTIME i want to flash a different ROM (i flashed 3 last night).
For some reason when i wipe through CWM my internal SD card is COMPLETELY WIPED!
The question is......Why???
Could the 4.2.2 ROM have re-partitioned my internal SD card and now CWM thinks the ENTIRE thing is data to wipe?
This is the only reasoning i could put to why it wont leave MY FILES alone...
If this IS the case, how do i get it back to normal??
I'm told, on numerous websites in BIG BOLD RED LETTERS that selecting 're-partition' in ODIN is bad and is just a ticket for a free paperwieght (the phone!).
Thank you to ANYONE who can help with this......
The clue may be in the 0 folder. Please read link in my signature to see if it helps

Thanks for your help, however the info you suggested does not solve my query..
The info you've provided assumes that the data is stored somewhere else, ie. 0\
Although my device did create a 0\ location when wiping the data, no personal data was in this location.
When i flashed back to stock using Odin, i could see that my phones internal storage was only 1.0-1.5GB used.
Before i started this i only had about 900mb left on my device!
So its not that my data is hiding somewhere.....its gone, and everything on my hones internal storgare is wiped everytime i "wipe data/factory reset" through CWM.

[Q] Backup and ROM question

Greetings - I've been through these boards and have tried to piece together the process of flashing ROMs. My questions are around the backing up of my Verizon S4 before flashing ROMS.
I used the all-in-one-root-tool to root my phone. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301720)
I have Carbon, Hyperdrive, Google Edition 4.6, Synergy, Liquid, Beans, CM, GAAPS, and both kernels (from above all in 1 pack) downloaded. Should I save all this on my external SD card? Do I move them over to my internal?
In order to backup, do you recommend TWRP, CWM, Nandroid, Titanium Backup, GooManager, etc? I'm still uncertain of the differences in these and not sure where i should save the backup files (on my external SD, laptop, etc?)
Once I backup, do I use CWM/Goo to flash one of the ROM's mentioned above, factory reset, clean cache, dalvik, data?
Sorry for the remedial question - and thanks in advance for any answers!
I have a guide right in this forum, also I have a link that may help you with roms, in this guide...good luck...
Thanks

Also for backup procedure, I have that info in my guide link at the top.

yes, save them to your external sd card, at least that is what i do anyway.
i am using twrp installed via goomanager for my backups, as well as titanium backup pro. save the files to your external sd card as well, that way you have as much free space on the phone as possible since we have such limited storage.
i flash through twrp, and i do a 3x wipe on everything (cache, dalvik cache, data, and system) to make sure i have a complete clean install. this is probably overkill, but i would rather that than have a dirty flash.
hope that helps...
Help?
I did a backup with TWRP, saved the backup files to external SD, and laptop.
Flashed Liquid and Gapps. Rebooted. Phone is now black and vibrates intermittently and cannot get to TWRP.
I can get to ODIN download mode on my phone.
What do I do next to get this phone back up and running?
Do I flash back to stock rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325
Can I flash liquid again from Odin?

Downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.12

I know there are a few other threads out there regarding this but I'm still not completely sure of the steps. (Doing this for my brother's phone, not mine thats why)
Could someone outline a detailed method of downgrading to 4.1.2 again, while retaining all user files? I know 4.2.2 introduced that /0/ folder bull**** together with the multi user support.
I know the usual wipe via CWM, and flash 4.1.2 but how would this be different since its 4.2.2 before? File structures are different as said before. Don't wanna mess up since it's not my phone haha. Trying to get him to use 4.1.2 with perseus kernel since it's way better than stock.
Read the "Flashed 4.2?" thread in General
You can't keep user data, unless you do a full wipe during flash you will end up with a bootloop. Copy files from the internal sd to your pc, wipe and flash, then copy them back.
Backup apps only via titanium, don't restore system settings or data.
Just move everything from /data/media/0 to data/media.
Best bet actually would be to copy everything from /data/media/0 to pc first, full wipe and format of internal sd then flash rom

You could also backup SMS, MMS, call log, clock alarm using Titanium\Mybackup Pro.
User data files, and application data files (what's up, waze, etc) will have to be done manually as mentioned, using external SD.
I also recommend full format of internal SD card before installing new ROM. It will make the "0" folder go away or being abled to be deleted.

[Q] Ultimate wipe

I was about to upgrade to the 10.1.3 stable (from 10.1 stable) of cm when i strumbled across several gigs of old files, app date, media and backups from my old n long gone cm9 install (under /data/media).
clearly all the wipes i performed since cm9 did not remove any of these files which include old apps i'd installed but havent used since cm-10.
Is there a way to do a complete wipe and get rid of all this excess garbage I have no more use for?

Because a factory reset keeps the /data/media folder untouched, to be able to wipe, without losing the files from your internal sd, that's why i suggested a wipe of the internal sd, not a factory reset.

I've never done this before so please bear with me.
Is there anything specific I need to do before I wipe the internal sd? I've backed up the cwm zips that i need and the efs folder. anything else to keep me from bricking my phone?
A link to a guide of some kind would be very helpful.
1. backup efs and cwm backups to extsd
2. remove extsd
3. boot into cwm recovery, wipe internal sd
4. insert extsd and flash cyanogen 10.1.3 and gapps from it using cwm recovery.
does this sum it up or am i missing something?
Sorted it out:
1. backup to extsd
2. download & copy megawipe to extsd
3. copy roms & gapps to extsd
4. boot into cwm recovery. install megawipe from extsd. DO NOT RESTART.
5. install rom & gapps from extsd and reboot.

Wiped data before flashing ROM but it's still showing up

I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs. My phone is rooted using all in one toolkit, s-off with sunshine. TWRP is my recovery.
I made a backup of my rooted stock ROM , then used TWRP manager to flash cm11. I checked to wipe all the data and dalvik before flashing. Cm installed with no issues.
Once I finished setting it up, I installed es file explorer again and noticed that all my files from my internal storage are still accessible. Its just listed under 0. Everything is still in tact tho.
Did I do something wrong? I don't understand why I still have all these files.

You have to have internal storage checked for it to be wiped
^^^This. The data that was wiped was system data, not your personal data.
Thanks for responding so quick,
I checked all of the options under install on twrp manager. Looking back, it says wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. There wasn't an option for wipe internal storage.
Is there anything I can do to fix this now? Or would I just have to go into twrp and reflash cm from recovery, making sure to check wipe internal storage?
Also, if I leave it as is, is it going to cause any problems?

First off, ditch TWRP Manager, its a needless middle man (you're talking about the TWRP Manager app, right?).
If you boot into TWRP and select Wipe, you will see under "Advanced Wipe" there are a slew of wipe options (but be careful what you pick, as there are options to wipe things like the removable SD).
HOWEVER, you don't need to wipe the internal storage to flash a ROM. Yes, you need to wipe user data (/data) in most cases, and also cache and Dalvik. But wiping internal storage (virtual SD, also called sdcard on ES File Explorer, or sometimes /0) is not needed. For most practical purposes this partition is treated like a removable SD card. In fact, by default, backups like your TWRP nandroid and Titanium Backups are stored here. So if you wipe, you will lose those (unless you move/copy them to the removable SD or somewhere else like your computer).
Some folks like to wipe internal storage when they flash a ROM, just for general cleanup purposes. But its a personal choice, and not really necessary IMO. And as mentioned doing so will wipe your backups unless you save them somewhere else that isn't going to be wiped.
Thank you so much for clearing that up.
Yes, I was talking about twrp manager. You're right, after I checked the options, all it did was reset and boot up twrp. Pretty useless...
So since I still have all my game data stored, can I just copy it over somewhere to retain where I was at? I'm talking about android/obb data.
How would I go about integrated all my previous data into this current software? Let me know it my question made sense or not

I think some folks like to use it to install TWRP. But installing with fastboot is easy, and also important to know how to do if you have issues someday and need to re-install TWRP from a non-booted condition.
So yeah I agree that TWRP Manager is pretty useless.

Use the app Titanium Backup to migrate app data when flashing ROMs (also handy to migrate app data to a new phone). And paying the few dollars for the Pro Key and getting the batch backup/restore functions is well worth it if you are flashing ROMs.
Do not use Titanium to migrate any system data to a new ROM, as this will likely cause problems. Just apps and app data. I've had success migrating SMS with Titanium as well. But other things like Settings and Homescreen setup, I usually just do again manually after flashing a new ROM.
As mentioned in my post above, the default save location for Titanium Backup data is the internal storage. So do not wipe internal storage when flashing a ROM, or you will lose your backup data.
Just copying the game files will most likely not work to migrate your game save data.
Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.
I used titanium backup and extracted my apps and data from my nandroid backup. Worked pretty well.
The only thing I'm having trouble with now is getting my info like contacts and stuff to sync. It says it's synced, but I'm not seeing it.
I wanted to install HTC backup again and try and restore that info. Would that work?

I can't say, as I don't use HTC Backup.
I prefer to just have my contacts on my Google (Gmail) account. This is the default on the phone, so unless you changed it, your contacts should all be on the cloud on Gmail (you can login to Gmail on a computer and confirm your contacts are there). Then will automatically restore to the phone when you first setup and enter your Google login and password.
If you've confirmed your contacts are on Gmail, and still not synching, go to Settings>Accounts & sync>Google, go to where Contacts is checked, uncheck it, and then check it again. Sometimes the sync will just get "stuck" and this will clear it up.
One M8 stuck on GPE 5.0.1 ROM boot animation
I foolishly reset factory data using TWRP under Wipe, and when I try to reinstall the GPE 5.0.1 ROM I couldn't find it. Then I try to restore my backed up Sense ROM and I couldn't find it under Restore. Maybe I deleted it and I forgot about it. Help me? I don't have MicroSD to store the GPE ROM which I thought would solve my problem because I thought I may have deleted the GPE ROM .zip file when I reset factory data. Now I am stuck on GPE ROM bootanimation the moving around dots. I need help please someone?

If you did the "default" TWRP factory reset (data, Dalvik, cache) this is not foolish, and is the correct wipe for moving to a new ROM.
You either bypassed the default, and went to "Advanced" and wiped the internal storage; or there is also the occasional instance where internal storage is corrupted by no fault of your own (more common with oldr TWRP versions?).
adb push a ROM to the internal storage (or adb sideload flash) while in recovery.
okay I kind of fixed my One M8. But one problem remains, I can't use my internal storage. My Camera App can't use the internal storage so does all the other apps such as Whatsapp or downloads from Chrome. It's as if my internal storage is not there or somehow malfunctioned or the ROM doesnt support the use of internal storage. But before I got into this problem (I forgot how I got it in the first place as it happened months ago only now I was able to fix my One M8), it worked perfectly fine, the Storage had no problem. But I had problems with Wifi, I thought maybe reflashing the ROM was a good idea to fix this but it didn't instead I can't access my internal storage by File Manager or by PC. If you have any solution please help me. Thanks in advanced.

Broken WiFi is usually a symptom of wrong (outdated) firmware for the current ROM.
Internal storage may be corrupted. Try to connect to a computer and format it, or you can try RUU.
Or try to re-flash custom recovery, or update or try a different one (if TWRP, try CWM/Philz or vice versa). Some folks fixed similar internal storage issues by flashing recovery.
I need help again.. I decided to format all my data but I kept my backup in the internal storage.. But after rebooting the phone it works but then I can't download apps from the play store or from chrome.. also I can't transfer files from my pc to my one m8.. But I can take photos (which I think uses internal storage).. Also my guest mode is not working.. Ithought something must be wrong with the internal storage so i wiped it out.. When i rebooted everything is black but when I long press the power button 'power off' shows up.. Something must be wrong.. Oh when connecting to my pc it shows CD Drive instead of HTC_OneM8 like it usually would.. Pls reply even when there's no hope to fix this phone at all..
