Hey guys,
This is my first post over here (though I am a long time XDA reader). What pushed me to register is what happened to my phone today.
-I've got the SII i9100, Dorimanx Kernel, Revolt ROM.
-Updated this morning from Revolt 4.2 to Revolt 4.3 no problem.
-Also today my phone dropped into a river and was in the water for a whole second before I picked it up.
I picked it apart (Battery, SIM card, Memory card and) and because I had no other means of drying it, I just put it in my bag wrapped in a towel. Around 20 minutes later I reassembled it to see if it at least turns on. It stuck on the boot screen (NOT boot animation, I am talking about the yellow warning sign). Removed the battery and tried again - and the phone turned on regularly. I turned it off again to let it dry completely.
From then on, no matter what I do, the phone doesn't turn on, tried recovery mode, download mode, soft boot, charging with or without the battery, connected to the computer with two different cables, switching batteries. There is no reaction, and the screen never turns on.
One thing the phone does react to, and this is my last hope that the phone is not dead - whenever I put the battery back in and try to turn it on/charge - there is no sign of life, until I press any of the physical buttons on the device (touch the buttons around the home button), the buttons next to the home button will light up for a few seconds and then fade off.
I would normally just take the phone back to the store and fix it, but I REALLY need my text messages and WhatsApp history that are on the internal storage - I have messages there that go three years back!
Thanks to everyone who is willing to give it a thought. Any help is greatly appreciated.
99% alcochol, sink it for an hour.
Before you do that, try with another battery.
Never try to turn a device on after contact with water, you need to rice it up for a couple of days.

How much time do I have to do this? It's a holiday in my country today, won't be able to get it at least until thursday.
Right now the phone is in a bowl of rice as suggested somewhere around here.
Alright, that's what I meant by "rice it up".
Now, 99% alcohol removes all the river dirt, you can get it in a drug store easily. I'm sure there's one open where you live, people may need sh!t even on holidays.

They probably do have one open, but I just googled it. I won't find it there, local FDA limits alcohol sales to 70% and less Will have to look in a chemicals supply store on thursday when they open.
Thanks again for your help. Other than the two things you mentioned above - is there anything else I can do?
*Just out of pure curiosity, does the fact that the buttons next to the home button light up have anything to do with the solution? Does this usually happen?
It's about shorts and corrosion, dont turn on the device just yet. And get that 99% alcohol; ask around, who knows:
"hey, how you doin'? Family alright? Good. Listen, do you have 99% alcohol by any chance?"

Hi all, today, [email protected] day.... when i let my HD2 went swimming...
It was on my pocket and i have no idea why it could run out of my bag and went swimming in a big cup of water.
i took it out right away, and then remove the battery and leave it there. Next 30 mins, i tried to put the battery back and turn on the phone. It is okay, but look like the water did damage the phone, like the volume button is stuck now (damage inside the phone), the volume automatically go up and down and the phone was freezing so i removed the battery again and leave it there.
Now, everytime i try to turn on the phone, it just stuck at the screen that shown up the SPL version and won't boot to the OS. Like we press the start button with holding the volume button.
I have tried to use soft reset button of the phone, but it didn't work. I just stuck at that screen.
My HD2 is HTC HD2 T8585, from somewhere in S.E Asia, bought from Amazon.com without any info about religion.
So, can it be fixed? Or are there any store in US can fix this problem? I have already heard that HTC won't fix the waterdamage.
Thanks in advance.

PS: now, i am keep drying it through the hot wind from my laptop...

don't start it again until tomorow, water inside is hard to evaporate. keep him on something hot with battery out.
Don't touch it for a few days. Don't keep trying it! Keep the battery out. Keep the phone at some place dry. You risk more damage to the phone by trying to use it while wet since it may short circuit.
Some people recommend leaving it in rice to dry it out.
I've dropped my old phone into rivers a couple of times and it always survived since I immediately took out the battery and let it dry out for at least a full day or longer.
Can I suggest you cover it in rice. The rice will absorb the excess moisture, just pop it into a bowl and cover it, then put it near a low-output heat source. Worth a try.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see Aceo07's post.

My bad. I want to say that i have no idea where this phone come from, i checked on HTC Home page and i can download only the ROM 1.66 from S.E Asia.
Update: I turned on this morning, oh god, the windows load successfully, everything seem to be back normal. But i won't risk it, i am continuing to dry it through the hot air form my laptop until tonight... At least, i didn't make my HD2 become a brick.

Yep, you got lucky. Usually when it's wet and someone tries to turn their HD2 on, instant damage. What happens is that the processor and various other chips are not flat against the motherboard, but there are balls underneath it that make the connections. The water goes into the little pockets under the processor and in between the little balls, so if it's turned on wet, usually it shorts the whole thing out.

Yeah! my Leo is back... Thanks rr5678 , your advise is great... i am happy because i didn't turn it back on too soon...
At least, Leo is better than the iPhone... i dropped a iPhone 3G into water 2 years ago and then it turned out to be the most beautiful brick that i had ever had... I still remember how hard i tried to press something on the crappy screen of that iPhone...

See, the iPhone became a ****brick because the battery is not removable, which means it still had power when wet.

I have never paid for iPhone, and may be forever!
Anyway, don't try to turn it on again till you've completely dried it! Put it in a sealed box with silica gel inside to absorb the water. If you're experienced with disassembling your phone (it's just 4 screws away), dry it out naked! You could potentially damage a working phone by applying current when the water shorts the pcb inside. A dive in water will usually not spoil phones unless it has salt content.
Yesterday, I was at the beach, phone was fine, later i go into the bag of things I brought out to check my shiny new Evo 3D, only to find it turned off, and I haven't been able to get a thing working all day, won't come on, wont give me a startup vibrate, screen flash, charge light, or anything. No water damage either I've checked the water indicator and nothing is different. Any ideas on how to get it back up and running.
Also, my girlfriends OG Evo will come on, but no screen, screen will not show anything even though capacitive buttons glow a normal, no water damage on her phone either.
Yes I posted this yesterday but under a weird title
Yes I have battery pulled
Yes I have tried a new SD card, and completely removing the SD
Don't know what else to try
Please help
Maybe the sun borked something in the units. I don't know if you left it baking in the sun but I know that leaving it in direct sunlight for prolonged period of time can wreak major havoc on LCD screens.
When you plug in the device you do you at least get a charge light indicator?
I'd suggest cooling down the device but since you said this was yesterday I don't see how this could help you.
Battery pull, fan cool down, wait an hour, reassemble and try again.

The sun could of baked your phones both of them depending on how hot it was at the beach . I know the sun will **** up a lcd screen. Since your both having issues im guessing it was from the sun so I would take it to sprint and get it checked out .

I went to a sprint store today, they cant touch it until 30 days, I'm not sure how it could have gotten so overheated, It was left in the bottom of the bag, and everything else down there was fairly cool, i tried cooling it over the ac though.
And no, no charge light at all
question
How many days have you had it... Seems like a defective phone from the get go to me. I would be pissed if I bought a new phone and it died in 2 days. Return the phone and don't take no for an answer!!! They should give you another one.

I agree. Take the 3vo back demand an exchange. Take the evo back separately (maybe different store altogether) and have the tech fix it or do the insurance deal.
Beaches are the graveyards of electronics. Don't take them there unless you plan on burying them during your visit.

Hey I am having the same Problem (diff circumstances, not beach temps I am in Chicago) I was at my friends apt tonight showing off the EVO 3D when the screen just went black! The phone said it had over 70% battery remaining. It has been about 3 hours since and the phone will not turn back on. I have taken out the battery plugged in power and done it all backwards too. I don't know what to do right now. I got this phone TODAY!!!

Did you do the OTA update ? Isn't there a hard reset ? I haven't messed with the OTA yet. Got my phone today from sprint online. Anyways I know the HTC touch pro 2 had a SLEEP issue it was called the SOD screen of death phone would turn screen off and you couldnt get it to wake up at all. You had to pull battery multiple times to get the sucker to work.

I have been trying to hard reset my device all night now! I have been trying this method: google search EVO 3D hard reset and its the first link... basicly it says hold down your vol down button then hold the power button but nothing happens for me.
but to no avail! I have tried taking the batt out multiple times and press the power button. I have tried keeping the batt out with the power cord plugged in. nothing is working!

they just dont wanna becuz they might have to swap you and theres no referbs yet so they would have to give a new one and dont want to cuz they would rather sell it
so they have to take a look at it call CS 1800 theyll walk you threw all the stuff you tried (that didnt work) once its doesnt work with their help thell issue you a repair ticket and then the store will have to look at
Efff that...RETURN both phones as defective.
my evoG had 3 returns before i was happy.
Today my 3d decided to turn off and not turn back on after selecting an application. had to pull the battery to get it back up again..
HW002.. I will be taking mine back in .. seems enough people are having the device just shutdown on them for no good reason.
Remove the sdcard then try and boot the phone.
I ordered it online on the 21st, So what I really want to know, is if i take it to a corporate store with the box and all items that came with it, will they allow me to swap it there, or will I have to call CS and have them send a replacement?
Last night i was out, and well basically my phone isnt working and im 90% sure its water damage now, the screen has little white bits round the end, whats the best way to get it working again, because it wont turn on :/

My girlfriend knocked her phone off the counter into the toilet when she was sick (needless to say phone had some chunks on it as well). It was game over. luckily in US we are able to insure it and we are now getting a new one for the one time "low cost" of $125. 125 is better than a full retail, thats for sure. I made her call AT&T before just to see if we could weasel a SII on early upgrade, no dice.
Moral: Insurance ftw
First suck all the beer out of it! Want not waste not!
Assimilated via WinBorg 4G
Best thing to do would have been to take out the battery/sim/sdcard and put in dry rice immediately, then leave overnight. Might not be too late either, but def should have done that right away. Right after I got my Captivate I got really drunk and accidentally soaked it, I didnt even realize it had gotten so wet until I woke up the next morning and tried to turn it on. It even tried to boot, showing the Samsung screen briefly then immediately turning off. Taking the battery door off there was water drops inside. After about 18 hours in rice I was soooo surprised that it booted right up and I havent had a problem out of it to this day!! I still use it all the time.

Thanks for the advice guys, i put it in dry rice so we'll see how that goes *fingers crossed*
So i have put it in dry rice, and well it booted up but the touch screen was unresponsive, and so was the fingerprint sensor leaving me with no way to actually use any of the phones features, i think there is a tiny bit of water left so im going to stick it in rice a bit longer but try and get the screen repaired if that doesnt help,
Is there anyway i can access the stuff on my phone using the usb connection maybe?
Sorry to hear about your phone. My son got pushed into a swimming pool with his Atrix in his pocket. It is fully functional today.
What we did.
Rice and a warm spot. Not for hours... It took a whole week before everything straightened out. There was an issue with the sim and sd card readers, but nothing an emery board didn't fix.
First mistake, you turned (tried to) it on. Second mistake...........you turned it on too soon after putting it in rice.
One day in dry rice is not enough. If you read guides about water damage you will see that you really should have the phone in dry ice for 5 days. Never ever plug it into the charger or turn it on before you do this. Only takes one wee drop of liquid to short something out.
Next, you should strip the phone down and clean everything internally to make sure you will not suffer from oxidation and corrosion in the future. Many phones will work after being in dry rice, only to succumb to corrosion after a few weeks or months because all the connectors inside became oxidized.
In short, water damage is horrible, but there are many guides on the internet specific to this outside of XDA which can help you. The iPhone water damage guides are especially useful, even though the hardware is different. The concept is exactly the same.
First rule is always do not attempt to turn the phone on, and do not plug into a charger.

Hope this helps, the phone that I mentioned, was turned on immediately after getting wet. His girlfriend was the smart one and pulled the battery for him.
We sat it in the rice and checked it every day by turning it on. (I am in no way recommending this btw, simply reporting an experience.). Each day it seems like it got better and better. The last two days everything was working, but there was still evidence of moisture on the screen. So we baked it for a few extra days. I did have an advantage over you. The outside temp was 100 plus and I sat his, in that bag of rice, on the hood of a red car everyday for most of the afternoon. It will most likely take longer with a cooler temp to work with.
We may have been 'lucky'. But this is so you know that there is a great chance that everything will be fine.
well, an update on my girlfriend's PUKE phone:
The day I posted that was I think thursday, we let is sit all thursday- friday- saturday. On sunday (around noon) she couldnt handle the Nokia 3360 any longer. When she left for her "mani/pedi", I sat down with the poor phone. After a little cleaning of contacts and such I was able to get it to boot and come up. When she got home it was up and going. She was thrilled and I got a "reward".
She used it all Sunday and today until the insurance joint came in. The only thing that didnt totally dry was the screen. It looked like pure hell, but worked. She said anythign was etter than the old green screen nokia
PS- she had tried to turn it on friday and got a "Modem Failed to Initialize: Starting RSD". Sunday it worked fine.
i dropped my phone in the toilet. managed to take it out. it was still in the power on state. removed battery asap! whats next?? shall i get it some heat, hair drier or bulb ?? how many day do i need to keep this phone in the rice? also im not an expert in disassembling!!! any suggestions?
I've heard up to a week but a couple days will probably work. I would probably just use a can of compressed air. Hair dryers can create enough heat to loosen the adhesive for screens on phones. Maybe place it near a vent or put it on a window sill with sunlight?

well my phone got wet on the back with a case, then i took off the case it and the back which was all wet, the battery was wet to and so was under it, i took out the battery and dried every thing and it worked, everything did, the speakers and buttons. so later today the phone just shut off and wouldnt turn on. so i thought it died and i tried charging and just the light would flicker on the top left of the phone. so i put it in rice for about 5 hours and i put battery back on and now when i press the the power button. the screen just turns on like u can see light, just a black screen. then it goes away.
the battery has some green stuff on one of the gold things that conencts your batteries.
So i oredered another battery off of ebay, do you think that would fix it?

Hope it works dude, water damage is pretty random depending on how wet it got. For the future, it would have been better to have taken out the battery and put it in rice immediately...
yap
a friend of mine forgot his phone in the pocket and it got washed by a washing mashiene
he brought it to a phone store and they put the phone into a blue liquide and after that iot worked properly
the green things on the contact came because u put it under voltage due it was wet the water got split into its parts (electrolysis)
i had the same problem with an mp3 player years ago lights went on but nothing else i think u broke ure phone but just leave it for a week or so and try again with the new battery
i hope for it will work
So actually, most phones phone should operate fine on net power and without a battery. Have you tried this? If it behaves the same as you described, I would not spend a dime on it ;-)
Bad luck btw ;-/
Hey guys i know this might not be very useful but hahahahah yesterday night me and some friends of mine were drinking outside near the main river in frankfurt hahahah and drunken girl got 8€ for jumping into the river xD
she did it ( i couldnt believe this xDDDDD i´d never done this )
Afterwards she recognized her galaxy ace in her pocket....
well it got wet
later on in her flat she repowered the phone and everthing worked fine expect the micro usb slot on her device xD
Well jfi xD
Try removing the battery and battery cover and completely submerging in 99% isopropyl alcohol (You can get it at most grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) for a few hours. At this point the phone should work as normal again, but to be on the safe side take a box of rice and submerge your phone in the rice. Leave it their for a day or two and you should be good to go. Hope this helps.
i might try it myself as my phone has water damage on it as well
9 times out of 10 in my line of work, usually when the screen backlight turns on but doesnt display anything means its done for. I have seen customers with phones that got soaked and they lasted a couple of days but then stopped working... My best guess is that the water was still inside the phone and shorted out one of the small circuits inside. Good luck though i hope you can get it working.

Hello community.
I have a serious problem and i want your help.I read all the articles about dropped in water but i can't solve my problem. So i am starting from the beginning.
Yesterday my phone was dropped in the toilet for 2-3 sec (stupid i know). I took it, i remove immediately all the parts (battery, sim, external sd) and i start blow with hairdrier (mistake i know) after 2-3 hours i try to switch on the phone with no result so i continue my stupidity... I connect the phone on the charger with no result but as i noticed the back of the phone was warming. After that i read the articles (the first correct thing). So i put the phone in a rice inside a Tupperware and i wait for 8 hours. Then i start the phone and WOW it was working fine for only 10 sec. Then a battery message appear that i must charge the phone and the screen went black but the sounds and the touch was working. So i close the phone and i put it in the charger ( i know,,, i know...) After 10 min i remove the phone from the charger because was warming. I tried to switch on but the screen continue to be black and the sounds and the touch working... So i remove again everything and i put it in the rice again until today 2 hours ago.
I switch the phone and the phone started and the screen working except 1/4 of the screen in the above right place. So i close the phone and i put it in the rice again.... I noticed that when the phone is closed there is difference in colour between the black screen that working and the black part that is not working. So after again 2 hours in the rice i noticed that the black screen that is not working start to expanded in the left top side of the phone... and i am wondering, this thing is a water or something from the screen liquid?
Please help me if you can. I will appreciate your help.
Michalis Michael
I don't know if anyone can help you, it is a smelly affair.
If you were using some kind of disinfectant inside of your toilet (especially the smell of the sea or green apple) you have a huge problem.
More seriously, the layers of the screen stratify from each other. You can only replace whole screen, but I suppose that the rest of your phone also will die sooner or later.
Sell it as defective. Repair will be too expensive.

Dear friend i appreciate your knowledge and i want to inform you that inside the toilet their was NOT any kind of disinfectant inside.
Any suggestion except of sell it as defective???
Okay, don't be nervous, just kidding.
No, unfortunately there is nothing you can do yourself, only replace faulty screen. You just can't stick your digitizer to screen with somekind homemade tricks. And I don't want to worry you, but I'm afraid that there will be also micro corosion on your phone motherboard.
If you really want to try to reanimate it, than you must take it apart, dry all components with rice method or better by using special adhesive liquid used in electronic to remove all wet.
If the glue from the screen has not been rinsed completly than you can try to squeeze layers by placing a book or something heavyweight and flat on top and simultaneously heat it with a hair dryer. Repet this operation few times without taking out weight.
I really doubt that this will help much but if you really wish to try than go ahead. You can always sell it after that. Even in parts.
There is somewhere on this forum instruction how to unscrew i9100 completly.
Good luck.

Before try your tricks my friend i am informing you that the whole screen went black.... (Ohhhhh).
I just want to know.
The screen was broken or there is water inside the screen? (If you know)
Where car i sell the phone for parts or as a defective? (i ll give a try at ebay but if you know somewhere else give me a hint)
Thanks again guys
Theres guys on here that have went swimming with their phones and they still work.Youd only get about £130 max on eBay for the phone if you admit its water damaged.
Youd be better soaking the phone in that alcohol stuff then drying it via rice for a week.
What can you get for £130.....
