While cloning an ESN is illegal, changing it isn't necessarily. However I'm not sure the Rez would be happy on 3g without a SIM. There is a way to do this but I'm not sure what. I am wondering, however, why in the world would you use a Rezound on a data only connection...if you have a tablet?
Update:
I found a solution just got a tablet activated and trimmed the micro sim into a nano sim with razor blade put it in my phone now I have a data only phone for my kid for 10.00 a month.

I recently messed up my HTC Incredible and thinking about getting this phone off ebay/craigslist. My question is, is it easy to change the CDMA from phone to phone? I wasn't able to really see any instructions online specifically for these phones. Also, am I obligated to get a 4G enabled on the phone from Verizon?
Thanks

Yes and yes.
Thanks - are there any tutorials on changing CDMAs? I'm having a hard time finding anything through Google.
What exactly do you mean by "changing CDMA's?" Do you mean switching the phones out on your line?
Yeah - I want to switch my line from the old incredible into a new phone. Should I just go to Verizon and have them program the new phone?

CDMA != GSM
I believe you might be confusing swapping out a SIM card for transferring your number to another phone. You can get the phone off of eBay or CL, go to your local VZW store, and just have them transfer your number to your new phone. I believe the TB should come with the 4G LTE SIM card (has nothing to do with a GSM SIM card). If not I'm sure when you go to VZW to activate the phone that they will give you one there.

I'd recommend going to Verizon because you need to get a SIM card to activate the device anyway. Head over there and tell them that you're switching your DInc out for the Thunderbolt and that you need a SIM for it. They can activate it on the spot for you.
Even if he did get a SIM card with it, that SIM is not tied to his number. I'd still suggest going to Verizon and letting them handle the situation.
As someone who just purchased a TB this way I can confirm: just walk into a corporate Vzw store and they'll give you a new sim (free) and activate your phone.
Kind of annoying having a sim like that, we used to be able to change equipment on he fly through Vzw.com or over the phone.
VZW's 4G phones still use ESN numbers too. The sim is just to get access to the 4G network. You will want to make sure the phone you are buying has a clean ESN number. If VZW has it flagged as stolen or something, they wont activate the phone for you and there's nothing you can do.
Hey all, not exactly a Thunderbolt specific question, but hopefully one some of you are familiar with. I have several Android devices, and before my Bolt, I switched between them quite regularly. However, after getting my T-bolt and unlimited 4g data, I have not swapped devices as all of my others are 3G only. Recently, though, I have been itching to use some of my other devices, but not sure if it is a viable option anymore.
What worries me is, first, switching between a 4g and 3g device. I do not want to lose my unlimited 4g data obviously. Anyone know if my plan will stay intact so I can switch back to my Thunderbolt? Secondly, from what I have heard, the Thunderbolt uses a one-time-use SIM card, which becomes useless after becoming deactivated. I have also read some people saying that Verizon will give me a new SIM card, free of charge, if I want to re-activate my Thunderbolt.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this situation, or could answer any of my questions. I really like my Thunderbolt, but want to use some of my older Android devices as well since I've got them. Thanks.
You are correct. Once you switch to a 3G phone the sim card for your TB is deactivated and you'll need to get a new one for the TB to switch back. I know you can get them free from corp VZW stores. I've switched back to a 3g phone a few times and my plan with unlimited data didn't change.
Alright just to be clear, I can use the sim card that I have in my Thunderbolt in a 3G device, for example a Droid 3, but if I want to use my Thunderbolt again, I'd have to get a new 4G sim card from Verizon? And nothing changes, in regard to my plan, technically I still have 4G service just using 3G?

No, the 4G sim can only be used in a 4G device. And with the Droid 3 you wouldn't have 4G service as that is not a 4G LTE enabled phone. But regardless, you will still keep the unlimited data plan.

It's worth a try to switch w/o killing the SIM card.
as the others were saying, it will have no effect whatsoever on your plan. you'll just need to get another sim card once you switch back which they'll do for free at any Verizon store.
I know because I went from a Thunderbolt to an Incredible 2, back to a Thunderbolt again.
I cannot see a forum for this phone so I hope this is the correct place.
I've never used a smartphone before & googling this question gets me lots of Americans talking about being hunted down by Verizon for not using their data package. As I'm in the UK most of what they are talking about is irrelevant to my situation.
I would be buying a SimFree phone to use with my trusty old virgin PAYG sim card. It has no data plan. I want to use my sim card for calls but use my router via the Desire X's WiFi at home for the internet like I do with my Nexus 7.
Is this possible? How? Thanks.
PS. Mention US 'carriers' especially Verizon & I will chop you up & feed you to the badgers!

Yes it is entirely possible. Just buy the phone, put your SIM-card in it and disable "Mobile Data". When you first turn the phone on though, make sure that you are at home so you can connect to the wireless network for the Google set-up stuff. Beyond that you can use the phone as a phone when you are out-and-about and as a smart-phone when you are within range of a wireless network.

The radio for US GSM carriers is locked off on a software level AFAIK. So you wouldn't be able to use the phone. This is just from what I've read. I'm no expert at it.

i can unlock the razr maxx, i can boot the razr maxx so why cant i use it
waiting for answers. My Nexus 4 has no battery life.
As of right now, this will not work.
There have been a lot of really sharp folks who have worked on this and looked at it from many different angles and tried many different things to make it work, myself included, and none have achieved any repeatable success.
There is a lock in the radio firmware that blocks the MCC/MNC for domestic US GSM carriers.
We have not found or isolated the precise mechanism for the lock nor how to disable it.
or, what i believe is more likely, the phones IMEI is being blocked at the tower level, by software running on the tower receiver hooked to att/tmobile mainframe database. that database is also how they know when someone takes their SIM out of dumbphone & sticks it in a smartphone, at which point the software automatically tacks on a data plan.

Why would att/tmobile work with Verizon to block their customers from using their service? I don't think it's tower blocked.

1. cell phone providers in the US are an oligopoly, which by definition is a state where the participants actively act in a manner to maintain each others profitability, and allowing all members to continue to extract monopoly rents. this is econ 101 stuff.
2. it is an easy way to cut down on tower congestion. AT&T has the IMEI of all of the phones on their towers and knows immediately if you put your SIM into another phone. They also keep a database of almost every phone made in the past 7 or so years and immediately tack on a data plan if you put your dumb phone SIM in a smartphone and charge you for it. It is trivial for them to block by IMEI.
They may not be doing it, but a simple test would be to change the IMEI & see if the phone suddenly connects. I bet it would. Unfortunately I believe IMEI changing is illegal, so you must not do that.
So I have an issue with my current tablet that is locked to T-Mobile not getting any data using a normal phone sim. I'm not about to risk buying a different T-Mobile locked tablet or even one with T-Mobile Firmware as I have a feeling I will run into the same issue, and I can't get any clear answers about it.
Does it make sense for me to buy an ATT Unlocked S7 and use a T-Mobile Phone SIM in it then? Surely an unlocked Tablet from another carrier wouldn't get caught in the data-only SIM mess right? Or are there other ways around this issue? Ironically all I really need is data, but I need to be able to use a normal phone sim from my T-Mobile plan.
Usually t-mobile doesn't care if you use tablet plan sim cards inside phones but it does limit the usage of phone plan sim cards inside tablets.
So with tablet from popular/well known brands, no matter if it's from another carrier or a factory unlocked version, you are almost certain to be detected by t-mobile and it will either block the tablet or limit the speed to 3g speed, especially with those free phone lines with unlimited data.
You would better go with an imported tablet not dedicated for US market.
