I got mine as promised from T-Mobile this morning. I have been with Verizon since before they were Verizon (pre-Cingular days even) but lately the reception on my phone has been getting worse and worse at my house in Mar Vista, and in other places around Los Angeles, although the *LTE*has always been very good at my workplaces in Culver City and El Segundo...but not so much at home.
I've had a succession of HTC Rezounds for several years, and while it was a great phone, it was definitely showing it's age.
I've always liked Sense and HTC in general so when I started reading reviews on the One, it sounded like the phone I'd been thinking about.
Thing is, I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan with VZW, so I was waiting for *any* sign they were going to bring the One on before the end of the summer, but so far it doesn't look good ( and even if they DO announce it at the end of May, they are notoriously slow with this stuff).
I was hoping perhaps a newer phone would help my reception issues at home as well.
Last weekend though, I had the unfortunate experience of having a very important call get dropped, and I decided that was it. I would try another carrier (but keep the VZW account until I was sure of things)
Unfortunately, One's are scarcer than hen's teeth here in L.A stores, so I was forced for the first time to order a phone, sight unseen, just videos, pics and the like, a bit of a leap of faith.
T-Mobile had better, less restrictive deals than AT+T and I wanted to buy the phone outright in case things didn't work out I could sell it later on.
T-Mobile also had them in stock for new signers so that was also a factor. I was a bit concerned because AT+T had already started their LTE rollout, while T-Mobiles is behind and won't hit L.A. till early summer supposedly, but many forum posters were getting extremely good HSPA+ speeds in L.A., certainly better than I was getting at my house on VZW's true LTE anyway, so I went with them. Plus they could get to me by Tuesday.
So, today being Tuesday, it arrived as expected. Didn't get the car dock but oh well.
At first I was a little underwhelmed, the inevitable anticlimax when you realize it's not going to be shining like wet platinum as angels sing while you lift it out of the box, but merely another typical mobile device unboxing, cardboard, plastic, paper, etc.
I must say though that the packaging seems very minimal and eco-friendly, so kudos to HTC on that one.
So on to the phone. It is, in a word, serious.
When you pick it up there is not doubt that some very talented people spent a long time figuring out how to make this the most serious, thin, dense, slick piece of hardware you ever laid eyes and hands and ears on.
At first I was a little peeved because T-Mobile didnt have the black variant like AT+T, but now that I've got the silver/white one, I am glad I didn't get the black. It's elegant without being flashy, designed without being ostentatious.
Maybe not as much as the iPhone5, but pretty damn close in terms of minimalist aesthetic. And if you like metal baby, well this is the phone for you.
So, you take it out, no battery or sd card to put in like on every other HTC phone I've ever had. Kind of nice, I've never gotten anywhere near 32gigs anyway so who needs another slot.
The battery of course, is always a different story. But the 2300mh battery in the One puts on a good show, for most of the day at least. Certainly blows doors on the Rezound, who's battery
was never one of it's strong points anyway.
So, turn it on, set it up, same usual HTC setup stuff, nothing remarkable.
Sense 5. Generally, I like it. At first I was a bit pissed because things are very different in many areas, especially new menu UI's that are a little hidden if you don't know the drag-down-there-it-is trick.
But it only took an hour or two to figure it all out and most of it makes sense (ahh) in an evolutionary way. I'm still getting into the corners but mostly it's quite do-able.
Speed.
Many have used the word "butter". Many have also used the word "iPhone5". Probably because it's the closest any Android phone has ever gotten to the whisper-smooth, completely fine-tuned, hardware-accellerated no-lag wonder that is IOS on a iPhone5.
(before you light the torches, I have never owned an iphone or macbook and am not an apple person at all.) But any one can see that IOS has some serious advantages over the competition in that arena.
Until now.
So, yeah, it's smooth like butter, clean slick UI, and almost entirely lag-free; the only thing that made it stutter was a new tower defense game with heavy graphics and hundreds of on-screen enemies, but I think it would have made an iPhone5 stutter too.
Apparently HTC made a deal last year with Apple for something or the other, and now its looking like maybe it was for some butter. I do wish they had swapped the home and back buttons so my right thumb didnt have to reach all the way across the phone, but that's a relatively minor (right handed) complaint.
But hey, you say, what about the reception? At your house, remember the whole reason you went down this road? And what about at work?
Well, here's where it gets interesting.
When I got it this morning at work, I immediately ran a speed test and was disappointed to see it was around 1.1D .9U on HSPA+. My office in Culver City is a big multistory affair of the modern style, and the VZW Rezound gets good LTE data there, usually around 9-10D 2U. The One, not so much.
But when I got home, well, then the whole love affair really got going. Incredible reception, and data in the 15-20D 5U range! Now, this of course has something to do with the cell tower two blocks from my house that went up a couple of years ago, and which until today did me exactly zero amount of good apparently. Now I know who owns that tower, and it's not Verizon. So, the tradeoff for now is home vs. work, but its not contest because I need to actually HEAR and TALK to people first and foremost, and now I can.
I just want to emphasize that one of the things that makes this phone interesting is that IMHO it's different that most anything else Android coming out these days. The construction is, like I said, a serious affair. The tolerances are reasonably high. The metal has this curious sense of being tough and refined at the same time. The weight and size are, for my hands, just right.
It's heavy, but not too heavy. Wide, but not too wide.
It is, in the words of Goldilocks, just right.
Yeah, it's a Goldilocks phone alright.
I think I'll keep it.
I actually read the whole thing. Good job.

thanks! The more I use it, the more I like it.
It is truly an amazing piece of kit, probably the best Android phone ever.
Nice thanks for the write up! I nice to hear honest opinions from someone who came from another network!
hm amazing review, JB gives it a thumbs up!
Great review - now I hope it comes to Verizon next week! I don't have the option of switching carriers and my Galaxy Nexus is showing its age.

I have seen no reviews on a Verizon version. It would go to the review sites before launch.
LTE just got turned on in Los Angeles, much sooner than I expected!

I have been wanting to ask this question for over a week. I have been using different cell phones for over 12+ years, maybe more. When I got a BB back then, the big device made me look important (I was not!)
Over the years, I wanted more functionality, but I wanted a smaller footprint. This has been my reasoning for years, I always reached for more, both for job and personal, but it had 2 be smaller.
With both the Evo and Photon, I liked GhostArmour (Like InviShield), the devices were a little larger, but were lighter and had bigger screens for multi-media. But I still liked the reasonable foot print.
A few weeks ago I got OtterBox, and I love it. Although its the size of a brick, it has more of a "Manly, rough and tough" feel to it. After I got it, I happen to be out at happy hour and everyone wanted to see my phone. A few days later at same bar, I noticed @ 6 other people with larger phones (may or may not have been same case?). Not going to say who, but I was told we need to cut down on text messages and e-mail at work. Sitting in meeting, I noticed 7 of 12 people had lager devices/cases doing texting/email including the individual in previous sentence. This morning, I went to McD for my daily breakfast Sandwich, I noticed girl on window has phone size of mine on her butt cheek. (Im sure she does not use her phone to the extent I use mine?). Even my brother with his HTC Evo Shift (I'm proud of him!) has large case. I watch people walk around the complex, it seems EVERYONE has a large brick on their belt.
So, Is Bigger the New Better? Or should I say, Is Bigger and More protection the better?" Given the prices of these things............It might be the latter!
your ill conceived attempt to disguise the classic female question has been foiled.

Guess so, but on a women?
You've probably seen a lot of Dell Streaks & Samsung Galaxy Epic Touch SII, or similar devices with Otterbox Defender-like cases, if they make them for those devices...
Been using this phone for nearly 2 weeks now, and for the most part, I've been happy. However, with the Galaxy S III coming in a few weeks, I feel as though I should have at least waited before figuring out which phone I was going to use for the next 2 years. Because of that I decided to return the phone back to Wirefly and go back to using an old Blackberry until I decide to go back to the LTEVO or the GS III. I sold my E4GT so I can't go back to that.
LTEVO Pros
-Beautiful screen
-Excellent build quality and in-hand feel
-Very good (relatively) 3g performance in my area
LTEVO Cons
-Phone performance not that great, especially after opening and switching between a few apps
-Camera is good, but not nearly as good as I had hoped it would be
The two cons are biggies for me. I know for a fact that the sluggishness is related to software, but if you've ever used a Galaxy S II device, you'll realize how spoiled you were by how fast and responsive that phone was. It's an HTC thing; their software sucks compared to Samsung. Even using the T-Mo GSII based on the Qualcomm SoC felt a lot faster than any HTC phone based on the same SoC. I'm not saying TouchWiz is more functional than Sense, I'm just saying it's FASTER, which is 100% true.
The camera is good but the low light performance isn't as great as I had hoped it would be. Comparing to shots from my GSII, LTEVO shots were much more grainy. I also don't like the HTC camera software, and it might even be Sense related. I feel the software isn't fast nor intuitive. I hate the focusing mechanisms. Call me crazy, but I like crosshairs and boxes that help you determine what exactly is being focused. Also, the software isn't responsive. Taking out my phone and snapping a picture isn't very fast. It's acceptable, but like I said, with another great phone around the corner, there's really no reason why I shouldn't test them both and then decide which of the two I'd rather keep.
I'm not trying to bash the LTEVO. I'm sure we'll all agree, the device is far from perfect (all the devices are, in fact). However, I think most of us have the opportunity of trying BOTH phones before finally deciding which to go with. In a sense (no pun intended), the LTEVO delay was a blessing in disguise. Had it been launched on time, we'd be stuck with it. Now we have the chance of putting it up against a very formidable opponent and choosing which phone fits our style better. The GSIII could very well suck, but thankfully we have the luxury of being able to choose the phone we want because of how close together their launches were. I could be returning my phone, just to re-purchase it in a month, but I feel I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If the GSIII is a rockstar then I'm going to be kicking myself for not getting it instead.
Anyway, does anyone else feel as though they jumped the gun, and will be trying out the GSIII?
I feel this way only a little bit.. luckily best buy has a 30 day exchange. I am going to try both of them. This is a pretty solid phone, but I can not stand the browser always flashing white while scrolling, and the reception issues. I know both probably can get updated to work fine, but it is bothering me. I am going to test out the GSIII and see how the radios perform. If they are not up to speed I will probably stick with this phone and hope the updates come soon enough.

We are still on a stock ROM since it was released a couple weeks ago. I would imagine some of the issues you describe will be ironed out in upcoming ROM updates from Sprint and HTC. You also forgot other pros about this device like very good battery life, Beats by Dr. Dre, outstanding camera. No I didn't jump the gun. The GS3 will not be perfect at release also. Every device has bugs that need fixing.
If you think the camera isn't that great, take a look at one of the pictures I posted a while back here in the General forum.

Not at all. I don't use Samsung on principle, they are in bed ith Apple and playing both sides of the market. I have used the SGS phones and they're not better or worse, just different - depending on what you value in a phone. I also don't experience any of the cons you are complaining about, but everybody has different expectations and experiences.
Why do so many people start threads asking for others to take their side in decisions like this? If you don't like the phone, just return it and keep looking until you find something you do like. You don't need 1000 signatures on your petition to return the phone. It's your preference, do what works for you.
Just know that you'll be able to find something wrong with the SGS3 as well if you're honest with yourself.

Its not bad i have a defender case on and do like the feel but i preordered a gs3 and cannot.wait lol. Ill.keep this phone while i try the gs3 but this evo dose get very "laggy" when multi tasking. My gs2 didnt

Yea these people are getting ridiculous.. You don't like the camera app? What's not to like? I your reaching for that.. Go into the gs3 forums and you will quickly find out that people are having problems with them as well.. Not a phone problem as much as being an early adopter problem.. Can't believe u don't like the camera.. Some people will never be happy.. I'll end with this.. A software update will fix all these issues ppl have..multi tasking being my main one.. But a software update won't give uba metal unibody, kickstand and just an overall better built phone.. Same s4 chip in ppl.. I swear ppl are adhd nowadays
Nah. I don't have any performance issues and the only camera issue I have is that the hardware shutter button is half useless (only holds the focus, does not refocus when half pressed)
Also Deck is working on CM9 for the evo lte so that is a huge pro right there.
The battery life is amazing.

I didn't feel like this until i found out about the 2gb ram in the gs3. I like everything about the phone though, just wish it had 2gb. I wanted the best phone spec wise fir longer than a couple weeks.
I understand the agitation since every time I refresh xda I see another one of these posts.. I guess it's just hard for me to imagine wanting a Samsung.. I'm hard core HTC.. And with or previous devices I was willing to concede that maybe Samsung were better in some areas.. IE the gs2 vs my evo 3d.. The gs2 may have been better I guess to some or most of but I wouldn't have it.. I loved my 3d despite all the naysayers.. Anywho I really believe that with the evo LTE that HTC is back on top.. Esp hardware wise.. I dunno how someone could even argue that the gs3 is better in that regard.. Esp. With the same soc...so the software bugs will get worked out.. Just hold out... It's ok to enjoy your phone and focus on what it does well instead
I don't think I jumped the gun, just wish I had a magical gun to make all the Samsung trolls disappear

Well, I tried... That new girl was pretty, her stats amazing and tasty as she could possibly get.
But she was stupid. She wouldn't do things that I wanted her to do when I wanted her to do them, and was made out of mostly empty silicon. So, I crawled back to my wife of one year. Not as sexy, but trustworthy and faithful and ready to serve me whatever I need (except an unlocked bootloader). She's not as pretty as she once was, and definitely feels a bit heavier than the first time I laid eyes on her.
But I am happy to be back with her.
I was thinking about picking up an S3. What didn't you like about it?

What was wrong with the GSIII ??
I almost did it 3 days after release. I went to the forum here and read some of the post and changed my mind. Did the same with new EVO! I say negative things sometimes about Photon, but it really seems to be the best workhorse.
I wouldn't say there was anything particularly wrong with the SG3. The radios are a bit weak, but GPS worked well.
Touchwiz isn't all that bad, although a couple of the applications were really annoying (text messaging balloons and unformatted emails really pissed me off).
The phone is very fast, but the battery ended up actually draining quite quickly.
Really, the problem was simple. My photon does a lot of things REALLY well. I'm addicted to the car dock functionality, the kickstand, the nice alarm features, the incredible reception and the world capability.
Sprint's network is really bad for me right now, so going back into contract with them for two years doesn't make a lot of sense even with a spectacular device such as the GS3.
So, it made more sense for me to stick it out with the Photon until something better comes along, or I call Sprint's bluff and leave for greener pastures (not really going to happen, since I've been with them for 17 years).
Yeah, although the SG3 seems like a great phone in it's own respect, I can't justify upgrading to it. It's not enough of a leap, not to mention you lose out on global gsm, better radios on the Photon and the kickstand.
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SELL MY PHOTON AND MOVE TO A SGS2 OR A GALAXY NEXUS. NOW I WILL WAIT PATIENLY FOR ICS..
IN CUBA THE SGS2 IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PHOTON. $450(SGS2) vs $350(THE PHOTON). the GN is $500.
Well I've had the rezound since it came out and I always loved it. But it's a little outdated now and development has slowed quite a bit. So I'm thinking about getting a new phone.
I'm 99% sure I'm not gonna get the iPhone, even though I love my iPad and MacBook I think android is better than the iPhone.
The galaxy nexus is one of my top choices but I think they might be coming out with a new one soon and I would rather wait.
The s3 is my top choice as of now.
I don't see any reason to get the d inc lte.
I'm looking for battery life that is better than my rezound. I would like a decent screen but it's not that important. Most importantly I want the phone to be smooth and fast. And I would love something that is getting jb.
So what do you think? Keep the rezound or get another phone? Any suggestions other than what I listed?
Thanks!

Honestly i would wait for the next nexus device and cross my fingers its made buy htc lol. I love sense and all but i really like the fact that a nexus is made exactly for that version of android at the time and is still in mind when they make a new os. Like the nexus s came with gingerbread, then ics, and will soon get jellybean i here. I mean 3 os updates and it runs even better than when it came out with gb, unlike many other phones (not the rezound) when they get a os update they start to usually slow down because its not made with that os in mine. But thats just me lol
Thanks! I think I'm gonna stick with my rezound for now. If the one x comes to Verizon I'll get that
Unfortunately they've already said Sammy's making the next Nexus.
Actually I guess that's not official... Just based on a leaked Samsung spec sheet.

I've fought tooth and nail defending this phone for its outstanding hardware, but I'm starting to think it may be time to throw in the towel. The radios have amazing signal compared to Samsung. Problem? My strong as hell 4G signal stalls constantly. It never drops, just stalls all communications. I was so happy to see data stalls listed as fixed on this new ruu leak, but its completely untrue. No change. Not to mention the kernel drama. Still runs hot as hell. My respect for HTC has gone straight out the window this time. Not even aosp can redeem it for me now. So in short, I'm ready for a New phone as well and tell you go for it.

I bought a new iPhone for my sister a few months ago. I was setting it up for her and had it side by side next to my Rezound for about 4 or 5 days. I was just shocked at what a piece of crap it was. The screen was so small, it was like holding a kids toy or something. Honestly, it was painful to look at with its tiny, tiny screen.
3G just sucks. Granted, it was on Sprint's network (which I hear is not as good as Verizon) but 3G just sucked. Slow, spotty... Downloading apps seemed to take forever compared to my blazing fast 4G.
No widgets? WTF? I had to click on 3 or 4 things just to get to a Bluetooth control panel - my Rezound has a link right to the Bluetooth control panel on the homescreen. I love the big clock/weather widget on my homescreen, and having 4 different apps I can immediately go into during an unlock is terrific.
I have a few friends who have iPhones. One day, one of those guys who does sales (and is kind of an ass) started projecting that "I'm awesome because I own and iPhone and I love it and I love me and Im soo dam kewl" attitude - and I just tore him to shreds with the above three points.
He countered with "Well, I use iTunes and all my stuff is there and it magically appears in my iCloud, bla bla bla". I admitted he did have a point, but I ripped into him about how much iTunes sucks/I have my own cloud/etc. But I make sure to rip on him and his tiny screen and slow bandwidth opium of the masses toy whenever he brings it up.
I honestly feel sorry for people who are blinded by how cool they think they are because they bought an iPhone. Seriously, it reminds me of these people who are brainwashed into a religious cult and think they are going to be teleported to a paradise planet by an alien named Xennue or something.
I use Gmail/Google Calendar/Google Contacts/Google Docs... I have no desire to give that up for an iPhone.
However, I do like my iPad. Now that it can run Chrome, its actually nice. I can easily access all the above with little hassle.
Other than this ICS/Google Maps 6.10 debacle, I've had no issues with my Rezound whatsoever. With its extended battery, its just a great piece of hardware. I can't see myself changing that for any reason for a long, long time...
Now... Tablets... that's another story...

Wow so much animosity towards the iPhone. Its really not a bad device. Both iOS and Android are solid platforms, and both have their pros and cons.
EDIT: Scratch all that i mustve overlooked the fact you have an iPad, so you do like the platform. As for the cultish fanboyism of ios yeah its there, but its going to exist everywhere. We have fanboy android users with the same mentality.
Well if I get a new phone it will be the s3. So what do you think, rezound or s3? I really don't know what to do here. I've been with htc since the apache. The galaxy s3 looks pretty good though. What do you think?

nice looking phone with a better processor. Already leaks of JB on the international version. Promising. Personally, I'm riding the rezound for a while longer.

Well said Webmastuh . Hehehe.. iphones may be slick, but they are highly overrated. Lots of these new Android phones whoop ish*ts a$$. The Rezound is an excellent piece of hardware, when paired with the proper software and firmware. The S3 is an excellent handset. The interface and graphics acceleration are much faster than the Rez, but as you know, Samsung has always had poor radios. Idk if they have improved it on the new S3 though...

Ha! Yeah, sorry if the post came off full of iPhone/iOS vitriol. I agree - both iOS and Android are both solid OS's/Platforms and both have their pros and cons. For the record I work with both and I'll program for either. I dropped the "religious fervor" about this stuff a while ago - they are all just tools.
I actually have a couple of iPads, and like a lot of things about them. I use them a lot to do actual productive work (mostly note taking and emails on the go). I have a couple of Android tablets, and I'm interested in getting a Surface.
But I'm sticking with my attack on iPhones. G3 sucks compared to my Rezound's G4, the iPhone screen is much smaller than my Rezound, and iPhone doesn't have widgets (and that shouldn't be overlooked. They are convenient as heck.)
I found out the other day that if I ever want to upgrade my Rezound with a subsidized phone from Verizon, I MUST drop my unlimited data plan for one of those metered plans they have. I told the rep I would never do this, and that I'd fire Verizon and switch to Sprint or T-Mobile first.
But the question I had was why upgrade my phone? The answer was "for new functionality that comes out". My answer was "I'll just do new functionality on a tablet, and keep my phone as-is." I'm a pretty imaginative guy, but I can't see why I'd have a specific need to upgrade my phone anytime soon. If some new killer-must-have app comes out tomorrow that doesn't run on a Rezound - cool, I'll just get it on a tablet. I'll keep the Rezound for basic stuff and use other advanced/new stuff on a tablet. The Rezound will be relegated to a bandwidth pipe with some basic email checking functions. Oh, and actual phone calls...
Maybe if 5G comes out that the Rezound can't handle... (and it would have to be a 5 - 10 times better than 4G to make it worth it), then maybe I'd consider replacing my Rezound... Unless a tablet comes out that has it built in... Or maybe some specific must-have thing would work better with a small form factor, but then again it might also be available in 5-7inch tablet for $200...
Switching back to my old phone....
Maybe I'm crazy (don't answer that), but I'm seriously thinking about switching back to my Dinc2 from the Rezound. After using the Rezound for several months, I'm just not that crazy about it. Sure, its bigger and has 4G, but everything about it - flashing ROMs, S-On/S-Off, this radio, that radio - is so COMPLICATED. The Dinc2 is just so much easier.
And I know that development on the Dinc2 has slowed way down, but it has on the Rezound too. I guess I'm just not sure what I should do, but I don't want to switch, then switch back again because I miss 4G. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd advise against reactivating a 3g phone on your line, especially if you have unlimited or a double data deal. Verizon is looking for any excuse to take those away, and switching between a 4g and 3g phone apparently qualifies. (Seriously, I've been on the phone with Verizon all morning trying to fix my uncle's plan).
if you have questions on flashing, just ask, there are helpful rezound people around.

Just called and checked and they told me that if I activate a TB on the line my unlimited. Maybe it's if you flop back? I'm pretty sure the line was 3g.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info. That may just be enough to make me want to stay on the Rez. :good:
I don't know why people think dev on the Rezound is slowing because it's actually at more of a standstill. But, the OTA updates have dropped and now we are waiting for source to drop. Once that happens I have a feeling dev will continue on again and hopefully continue on long after the Rezound's shelf life much like the orig Incredible.
Does anyone think these crazy deals on the G2 means something is inherently bad with the G2? Maybe the networks are giving up on it or something else is coming out soon? Maybe this means there will be more out there so better dev support? I'm not sure but my wife and I are getting each getting one tonight.

No, I don't think something new is coming out I think they are not selling as much as an iPhone or Galaxy phone. People have no idea what they are missing.
Just got mine
I just got one yesterday, and I am damn glad I did. Love this thing already!! P.S. Price drop can mean more people picking one up too.

Doubt it, I was told by multiple Verizon employee's that they we're selling more samsung and apple devices. One store didn't even carry the G2 for that reason.
Well then that very well might mean more dev support as those who are buying it are probably our type .

My android progression has been: HTC Thunderbolt, Galaxy Nexus, Droid Razr Maxx HD, and now the LG G2. This phone is AWESOME! Best of the bunch. I've seen the S4 and HTC One, and I think this phone is better than them (although I do really like the HTC One form factor). As you can see, I have no brand loyalty . Hopefully these low prices will get lots of people buying the phone and make it a lot more popular than it is now. It deserves to be in as many peoples hands as possible!
Verizon is doing this to keep its customers. The g2 is identical to the nexus 5, they know this. Anyone with half a brain knows this.
So, have people jump ship and go to sprint or att for 150 dollar phone?
Or they can stay on verizon, get the same phone for 50 bucks.
Verizon knows how to do damage control, they arent that stupid.
There will be a new line up of phones for 2014.
I dont know about you guys, coming from a 2 year old galaxy nexus, I sure as hell could not wait till 2014 for a new phone and This g2 will def last 2 years easily as long as no hardware malfunctions occur..

Except they are not identical. They are similar. :silly:
Isn't the rumor that some of the price drops are occurring because of the upcoming release of the White Version of the G2? At least for Verizon.
Just my two cents but it could be that LG is trying to push more units out and lure people with its price point. LG doesn't have a reputation like Samsung and Apple. They have invested a lot of money in advertising the G2 and I really think they are just trying to get peoples hands on this device. I fell in love with the G2 this way and I initially had the intentions of going sg4.
This phone is amazing and so many times of thought about trading it for a note 3 and said no because of litteraly everything about it. When I want to trade nothing gets in my way. The more people they can get the g2 in peoples hands the better chance lg might not ditch the phone and support it.

Best phone I've owned hands down - I've had many many phones, been a pretty big power user, had iPhones, Palms (Bold and Pre), and now all androids from HTCs, Samsungs, to now LG, Loved the S3, Note 2, and was ok with the S4, but thing thing is the best I've had by far and away out of any of them. I gave up on the S4 mainly due to the locked bootloader and the inability to run AOSP roms on it and may never be able to after the OTAs.
I am so glad I got this phone. You'll love it.
psst.

True they are similar and unless your just have to have a Nexus device the G2 for the masses is better than the N5.
Warning: included is a long history of my Android and parts of my development career which when read lends insight into how I feel.. But feel free to skip to the last few paragraphs. I've frequented XDA since I got my OG DROID and still don't have ten posts... Loser.. Lol.. Well, you've been warned so don't give me a top long I'm too lazy to read. Just skip it, or read the first paragraph or so and skip to the end.. Or read it all. I need more posts so I can start contributing to the dev section and figured I'd actually write what I felt instead of a "lol" just to increase my count.
The Nexus 5 surely doesn't get better battery life ^_^ So much for Google's claims of Kit Kat improving battery life by 20%. I started with the OG DROID and was a common visitor here (although I was to new to post anything useful. I came from being a veteran C/C++ Windows developer. I drove my programmers crazy cause they were all taught MFC - I would never write anything that included the MFC libraries and instead used the Windows Template Libraries. For some reason using templates was Greek to most of them. Never was officially released I don't think but as a MCP I had access to a lot of tools that the Microsoft team actually used themselves. It used templates instead of classes and made building UI easier with a tiny footprint (no larger than just using API) compared to the footprint MFC brought in.
Eventually I just switched to Visual Basic so my programmers could work and maintain the UI and I'd write all the non UI mess using C/C++ (sometimes Java) as distributed objects so that they could just use these lightweight interfaces inside of VB (or whatever language they wanted to use...as long as they could import them in from .dlls or the occasional .exe server. This eventually progressed to where I was used to just create distributed classes/interfaces. For example, the method used for shipping using the FedEx PowerShip Plus servers was to the manually feed in shipping data and the process wasn't integrated. I was working where we shipped music merchandising (musictoday.com). There was a better way. It took forever as FedEx has a huge manual of shipping codes. Wrote up interfaces and implemented. Used that model so that others could import in my implemented version and override whatever functions they needed (this was before VB caught up and allowed this sort of behavior in classes, before then just interfaces. FedEx eventually bought out this component and I got nothing since all my work belonged to them. Also created a ticketing system for several bands connected to a thermal printer to print them. Dave Matthews was the main one using it as our company (Redlight which owned musictoday and Starr Hill.. Owned by Coren Capshaw) was their managers. Their main rehearsal studio at home was adjacent to the gym there where I worked out every day for hours (pissing our CTO off, but i ran the show in the development department and he knew it). Ended up hanging out with him a few times at Boars Head Inn and a few others (too bad I hated his music.. Told him I couldn't stand it and he just laughed). Developed the Friends of Live fansite and I guess I was their first fan club member even though I never signed up (another band I didn't care for much.. I like rock but).. Realized later after I kept receiving VIP passes to their shows (all access backstag, etc.. Which i gave away btw to family) thst I was there first fan because I designed the database for the fan site as well (yeah, was forced to play way too many roles there) and had used my information while testing it out and when I switched it over from the dev database to the live one, I forgot that I had also entered my info in that one as well while creating tthe tables.. Lol
Sorry for the long post about some of my history, but when the OG DROID came out which was my first, my Windows development ceased and I decided to learn Android. Quickly found it was built on a Linux kernel and it took off quickly from there. I even wrote a lot of inline assembly inside some of the IIS extensions I wrote thst queried our database as it had to be fast enough to handle all the traffic querying at the time. I can brag our search routines were fast.. (specifically the routine for searching for concerts based on artist, venue, etc..). I had SQL procedures that parsed the actual query string that the user entered. Which had to be smart enough to detect wildly misspelled names and such.. It was hundreds of lines long). The IIS extension was the bridge and as anyone who's used IIS (well back then) knows, you couldn't write extensions that were heavy.. Or else you'd slow everything down. For making the actual SQL connections, queries, and retuning results, I used the lightest method I could find.. raw SQL with a lot of inline assembly. All that was written just to say I want to kill someone everytime I loolnat small machine code. I can maybe change a color somewhere or if lucky enable paid features on free apps if I'm able by grace of God to find where the correct switch is. And don't get me started other ****... It's like trying to write with your opposite writing hand while driving in a foreign country where they drive on the other side of the road and keep the quality of each at optimum levels. RGB colors for examle are not FFAA66..no..you have to reverse it.
Anybody downloading any mods here which involve reverse engineering and editing small should not take what they get for granted and be very appreciative to the developer. I've followed the scene since the beginning (HarvesterX) and helped out a little (such as on the old Avalon theme for OG DROID which ended up requiring more editing then we were capable of.). While I had my PC, I built a few of my own ROMs (gingerbread.. That's how long I've been without one and when I need to root a phone I use the work computer). Then in progressed to helping debug some applications for some awesome developers. Apps I'm sure the majority of anyone rooted and on here uses as well as ones who those who like to mod use. I don't develop em just debug and troubleshoot and test so I won't give names or credit for any of it. The point is to show that it does take time and lots of work and the guys/gals here are fantastic. If they are doing this professionally, they would be making between $44,000-$110000 a year from it depending on location and level of knowledge. To do this for free means thst you.. Thst we need to donate back by either donating to the develops themselves, or donate to a charity, or just give something of yourself.
Next phone was the Galaxy Nexus. Love or hate it.. It was a great phone when first released and the development was top grade. I went through a rough time in my life during these years and stayed out of actively developing anything or helping (I did throw out a little weather mod that showed the weather as an icon in the notification bar. Soon after I shared it on another site I saw it pop up on a very popular ROM. Didn't irk me.. I took it as a compliment I guess. I wasn't looking for credit. Was just to give back to some friends. Did some theme work for friends as well nothing big
When the GNex eventually died I was sad but happy a the same time. Loved the design of the phone and it could have still been good as a music server or something. USB Flex died on me and by the time the replacement flex arrived in the mail in and gave in and bought the G2 hesitantly. I had horrible past experiences with my baby mommas (ex thank the heavens) LG Ally. Everytime I has to use that phone I wanted to throw it against the wall. It wasn't BAD except crippled as LG decided to skimp on memory. If it had had the same as the OG DROID it would have been much better. I was able to root it and throw on the only custom kernel I could find and thst helped a little.. But the display was grainy and the only positives it had was having Stock Android on it. I knew I didn't want a Samsung device as their ethics have been questionable and frankly I had tried a Motorola (used several actually but only owned the one), a Samsung (again, used lots of em but owned one..), and wanted to see what HTC, Sony, and LG had to offer. Well Sony wasnt gonna happen as I'm not leaving VZW while I'm rocking their unlimited at $50 a month and getting 30-40Mbs downloads at home (can't wait til Advanced is turned on). T-Mobile isn't an option period where I live.. It's no contest). So it was between the One and the G2. I knew about each and the specs (want aware though of all the under the hood specs thst LG didn't advertise a lot, such as their advances in display technology and GRAM). The One is a wonderful piece of hardware and the sound and screen, and build quality screamed at me. If it was one of the unlockable Ones or a Dev Edition I possibly may has missed on the G2. When I saw the G2 I already read about how it was great but..I can't go on reviews.. They are biased as hell and I can't count how many times I've found completely false statements splattered all over a device's review. First impression was thst.. Damn this looks beautiful. Hadn't turned the screen on yet. Reviews said thst it was plastic, felt cheap, and fingerprint magnet. Hmm. Looked more like a high quality poly-carbonate material and it was solid. I was my hands at least two or three times a day.. As well as clean my phone once every day or two. Found the power button and wow. The screen felt like silk. That's all I needed to see. I had already known that dev support would be there for it and I was afraid if I waited then an OTA would come around blocking the loki exploit. Grabbed it at off contract price and realized.. "NO BEZELS!".. I smoke.. (switched to vaporizers though but back to cigarettes while looking for a really good vape.. One I had was crap..). Well thise who smoke I'm sure have had ashes end up inside the bezel and the screen and used tweezers or similar to remove if blowing didn't help... Lol ok yeah I love the phone. I can't say anything bad actually.. Well having bezels is great but also a little irritating at times (rarely but..). If you try to type or drag an icon or tap a link and you have a finger eight on the edge it can cause problems. Took me a while before I realized why my notification bar kept being pulled halfway down..
This huge post leads to the question at hand. Is the price cut good? I like having the G2 as a hidden gem. Had it at work yesterday because I had inadvertently formatted ALL of my data partitition (thanks TWRP! on one side you have format data and a big Warning.. So I go to advanced section and check the box there as I came from clockwork and that seemed the thing to do.. They had a huge Warning on the other button..). Well while downloading the latest CyanogenMod nightly and gapps (just to get something on the phone.. Looking for a ROM I like atm.. Like the CyanogenMod nightlies but calls drop often). The links to all the roms I wanted to try were all leading to dead ends yesterday.. Haven't tried today though. I was using the floor computer and had logged in as admin. During the time I was waiting for the downloads to finish three customers had came in (I sale and install wireless Internet, and one of the few technicians) migrated to see what I was doing. Then I started getting questions like "where are the buttons?" as I had it laying on its back. I had questions of if they could test it out and if it was for sale.. I laughed and said no its my personal one but they are welcome to play with it when I get an operating system back on it. They watched as I opened a command prompt up and pushed the files over and watched the whole recovery process (these are regular people who had no clue any of this was possible). After signing into CyanogenMod and Android I handed it over to the wolves. All three asked me how much and where they could get one (one lady asked me which carrier mine was running one.. Guess she missed all the Verizon branding.. Lol. I told them they could pick up one for AT&T or Verizon (stopped thwre because where I live those are the only viable options for a radius of 40-50 miles.. And a reason our propriety wireless Internet sells so easily.)
I don't know or inside them on the G2 or Android itself but as everyone here knows (and if you don't you will now), stores are going to push devices from the top manufacturers and among those, the devices that they can also sell you accessories for. That mean Apple and Samsung (and the DROID line). LG is known for appliances. And there isn't the plethora of accessories the salesman can tack on. If this phone was pushed the same as the Note 3 or the 5s the price would not be dropping as fast. LG has a history of rapidly dropping it's prices on phones because of this very reason. They can't muscle the store to push their merchandise so they have to resort to drastically cutting costs to recoup on the capital invested.
LG knows they have a hit on their hands as I've never seen as many commercials for any LG product as often as I'm seeing the various G2 comments. The problem is, the commercials aren't really memorable. OK.. Look at Nexus 5 sales versus G2 sales. The Nexus 5 is shipping out of inventory at Google almost as fast as they enter. Google knows how to market. They know the target audience for the Nexus 5 (and since the Nexus 7, the name has became a lot more mainstream). They never had to show one commercial. This leaves me torn. If the G2 had shipped with stock Android and updates straight from Google then it would have sold as fast if not faster then the Nexus 5. The best part is, it's just as easy to unlock (*cough* bypass) the bootloader on the G2 as it is for the Nexus 5. N5 has the advantage in updates.. Yeah we have 4.3 and will have 4.4 but until LG releases updated libraries for the G2, the 4.3 and 4.4 bulds will be a mix and mash of the new thst works mixed with older lib files. Same problem on the OG DROID, yes that was a HUGE hit.
It's not like LG isn't gaining recognition as they've developed all the latest Nexi.. Problem is thlse aren't sold as LG Nexus. In my opinion LG has been the most innovative this round of relaases. Yes they deserve more, but it's not a "Ah good job here's a good star" world. There are bullies on the playground and we all know the two bullies I'm talking about. LG has to keep fighting back and winning. They need to see the G2 as an astounding success (though I'm sure it will be passed on for having 1GB less RAM.. Which might be relevant by the next time upgrades roll around but for now... On Samsung stuff I get it as TouchWiz used 1GB of it..) instead of just a failed device. I recommend this phone to everyone. I show it to them and they say *I love it but can't afford it*.. Well its like $79 or cheaper.. How much cheaper do you want? I paid $549 for mine off contract. Hopefully by the time they jeep unlimited away I'll live where T-Mobile is solid or they'll expand here.
Yikes. Please don't quote him.

Does anyone think these crazy deals on the G2 means something is inherently bad with the G2?

Hi,
Yes..., this...
XDA app crashes... Don't quote this post please
Have to disagree about the statement above (the g2 is identical to the n5) I have both and the g2 is much better than the n5 -front facing camera 2.1mp =back camera 13mp both better, sound quality much better, battery life is much better, not charged the g2 for three days and its at 13% and the design and quality on the g2 is, well its designed !whereas the n5 looks functional in comparison but then you are paying more for the g2, anyhow enjoy your phones, if you put the phones together and compare them the g2 just looks better, I think this phone is the best on the market right now
but that's just my thoughts.
