So all I've done is rooted my phone for wifi tether, but I'm ready to flash CM10 for a fresh experience. I am on Hboot 2.09 and the latest 3.16 software so I know CM10 won't work properly with obtaining s-off. I want to know if there is a good step by step video that will get me s-off for my exact set up for windows 7 64 bit? I am deathly afraid of bricking my phone. All the videos I've found out there are for the older software versions. Help anyone?

there will be no videos or how-to's per the devs at unlimited, just go here: http://unlimited.io/jewel.htm and follow the instructions to the dot, and you should be good to go and at the end S-OFF, good luck!
Original Post at Unlimited.io:

Due to recent issues with people reposting our tools and embedding them into their own kits we would like to make it very clear to all of our users. We DO NOT authorize any dev use of our tools within other kits or tools.
The ONLY place that you should look for instructions, or support with our tools is this website. We have seen quite a few XDA threads, htcevohacks.com walk-throughs, and other guides that link to old files or give bad instructions. We have also seen a LOT of phones stuck in an unusable state, unbootable or unable to S-OFF when following these unauthorized instructions.
We want you to have a successful S-OFF experience so please steer clear of these and stick to the instructions on our website only!

Have you tried facepalm? I just rooted and s-off my EVO a few days ago using this. It was really simple. Just read it, I think it works on HBOOT 2.09. I had HBOOT 1.12 since I never took any Sprint OTA.

hey i just wanted to save you some trouble - i just obtained S-OFF on my phone yesterday. like you, i was on hboot 2.09 and the latest 3.16 software.
facepalm S-OFF method will not work for you.
i'm not entirely sure about the reason, but i believe it has to do with the 3.16 software, which prevents you from changing the CID on the device (any attempt forces the phone to reboot). unfortunately, that means the first three lines of facepalm's method (giving you superCID) won't work, and thus the rest of it won't work either. i tried several methods of getting superCID on 3.16 before finally giving up.
unfortunately, that means you have to use dirtyracun / babyracun to downgrade in order to get S-OFF.
it's a bit more work, especially for me since i had to find a computer with a CD writer, burn a linux cd, and then use the same computer to boot into linux since mine doesn't even have a CD drive. but the instructions are easy enough to follow once you boot into linux.
sorry for the hassle, lmk if i can help with anything.

Okay so I burned the Live CD and am ready to go, but the the dirty racoon instructions on the website are far from simple, not to mention Linux is like Japanese to me. Yes I would greatly appreciate some help so I don't brick my phone. I use my phone for work so its even more imperative that I can use my phone after this process. Can you help with the first few steps? Thanks.

sure, i'd be more than happy to help. i followed the instructions step by step and nothing happened to my phone. linux feels a little foreign at first, but ubuntu is pretty user-friendly - and besides, there's a lot of people here to help you out.
again, before you start:
1) make sure you have a microSD card in your phone
2) make sure it's charged close to full
after you boot into linux:
1) first open firefox on the left side, and load up this webpage so you can post with any questions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41873127#post41873127
2) download dirty racun from the unlimited.io page:
http://unlimited.io/jewel.htm
3) then go into the file folder and create a new folder inside your Downloads folder named DirtyRacun (make sure it's the Linux Downloads folder, you'll know it's the right one if you see the the RabiesShot_LINUX.tgz file.
let me know when you've gotten that far

a CD is fine, you don't need a DVD. write speed shouldn't matter, just use the fastest available.
make sure you use ubuntu version 12.04 LTS (linked below) and a program that burns iso images:

sorry for the late response. i was getting lunch.
if you extracted dirtyracun into the downloads folder properly, the following commands should work for you.
1) launch terminal (click the ubuntu button, type "terminal" without quotes)
2) type "cd Downloads" (again without quotes)
3) type "cd DirtyRacun"
4) type "chmod 755 RabiesShot adb fastboot"
how far can you get?
I saved and extracted into the dirtyracun folder and after the last command, I get nothing

Make sure you have the latest HTC driver installed. Use a USB 2.0 port, make sure that HTC Sync is not installed on your computer, and that your computer antivirus is off.
You can get the latest driver in the link below. Use the HTC driver from post #2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179776
Also, it may take a few attempts before Moonshine is successful. On the phone I recently Moonshined, it took a few tries before it succeeded, and I had everything set up correctly.

I've been running into the same issues! It keeps getting stuck on the second step! I've been following all your suggestions you posted in my other thread as well. At least it got me to the second step in Moonshine.
All HTC drivers were removed and the new ones were reinstalled. Computer and phone rebooted, USB 2.0 port, etc... I even went to another PC and ran into the same problems. I'll try it some more since you said it took a few tries.
Edit: Now it won't establish a connection to complete the first step in fastboot even though the PC keeps making sounds when fastboot USB gets turned on

You have to use a live CD with Dirty Racun if you are running Windows. To answer your second question, no, you can't use terminal emulator on your phone, either. Please be careful with what you're doing, otherwise you risk having an expensive paperweight in your hand. Personally I would have gone the Moonshine route It's Windows friendly and you don't have to fool with any commands, other then checking device connection with ADB & fastboot.

Yeah I know. I'm being really careful with everything - reading up before I do ANYTHING. I've done this to several phones before, but never had this much trouble...
Do you know if it's possible to still use Moonshine at this point? I've gone through every single step for DirtyRacun except for #14 which is to run RabiesShot. I have the RUU for 3.15 HBOOT 2.09 installed and running fine right now. If I can use Moonshine (and actually get it to connect to the device now), I would rather do that.

Make sure you're doing a full system wipe in recovery prior to flashing the ROM. You also might want to try opening a command prompt in your ADB tools folder while in the bootloader and type the command "fastboot erase cache" (minus quotation marks) and hit enter. Make sure you're connected via fastboot USB first.

For some reason my phone boot loops on everything (ROM/kernel) I flash. I am s-on and in the past if I was changing ROM's or kernels and there was a bad match resulting in not passing boot animation I could always flash a fresh MeanBean and it would just do it's install goodness and boot up. For some reason now though after trying to flash a kernel last night it will not even boot beyond the HTC splash before reboot. I can still always get to the bootloader and recovery, but no matter what I flash it won't boot. :banghead: Also, I think the text that says Tampered in the bootloader used to be red, but is now black. I could just be imagining that now though.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
Thanks!

Sorry, just saw this... I'm on 2.3.1.0. Its been fine up until last night (been rooted and flashing ROMS and kernels since September as soon as I got the phone). Prior to that I said was always able to flash MeanBean (or MeanROM ICS) and get booted to use Flash Image then reboot to recovery and ROM flash to get me back to where I wanted to be.
I read the signature and that is perfect because since I was not having success with TWRP I was going to look up how to do that. Never needed to use Fastboot before. Knew it was simple, but didn't want to play trial and error right now, haha. Figured I'd post here and see what feedback I got while I searched.
Anyway, it looks like I'm not getting my device recognized when in FastbootUSB. It says "command not found". [edit] the Fastboot devices" command. [edit] Do I need to navigate to another location or something to do Fastboot commands?
LOL yes I know s-off is where it's at. But with the kernels for Meanx and ones that thick lizard puts up having the installer-and Flash Image taking care of the rest-I didn't feel like stretching the ol' comfort level and going s-off. I had actually recently re-downloaded the SDK though to get more familiar with things, because having to take all those steps (even having to fresh install and old ROM to use Flash Image, etc., to get where I wanted sometimes) is a huge PITA. Was planning to do some studying and s-off with DR as I'm hboot 1.19. Then, a flash went foul last night and here I am.

Use Facepalm. It's Windows friendly and takes less than five minutes. You do everything from the bootloader so the phone doesn't have to be booted to Android to work. You have to be able to connect via Fastboot USB so make sure your drivers are up to date. Also make sure you select the Fastboot option in the bootloader, then connect your phone to your PC. You also don't need the entire SDK to use ADB & Fastboot commands.

I believe I have 3.16 software. Probably saw that somewhere in the Facepalm thread and that's why I wasn't considering it. At least I'm pretty sure I'm 3.16. Honestly, I wouldn't know where to look since I can't boot up.
I think for now I'm going to try to flash the MeanBean kernel in Fastboot. As soon as I get my Fastboot commands recognized... Do I have to say "sudo" first or something?

If you're using Linux, most likely, yes. Try "sudo fastboot devices" (without quotation marks) & see if that works for you (that's what I have to do when using Ubuntu).

I'm on a macboook. When I tried "sudo" earlier it gave a big message re: don't [email protected] around (my words, same intention) and then asked for a password. I don't recall having to say "sudo" in the past. Also, I don't remember needing a password before, so I guess I'd better look into that... Maybe because where I at in file path macboook thinks I'm trying to sudo it and need a password? LOL :banghead:
I think I'm going to refer to the root guide I used last Sept as I was able to Fastboot flash files before (obvs, or I wouldn't be rooted). I'm guessing maybe I'm just issuing the command from the wrong location? That's why I'm checking the root guide to see if I navigated somewhere first. And to remind me how to cd since I haven't used adb of Fastboot since rooting last year.
Does that

Think I found my Fastboot issue: the root guide I used says for Mac always put ". /fastboot-mac" for each Fastboot command.
I'll report back if that goes well and I can flash a kernel that way and boot up. Wouldn't want to solve my issue and bounce out of here, leaving the whole community to stay up all night worried about me haha.
Sent from my V55 using xda premium
quick update: not able to get any fastboot commands to work. Not even using "./fastboot-mac" that i had to do to root.
if anyone happens to have run across this before, or knows the probably very obvious (except to me, natch) solution, please don't hesitate to let me know!
turn for the worse
Am now getting errors saying that can't mount things, most notable is that it can't mount internal storage. LIke, to the tune of not even being able to select it in TWRP. When I try to mount to computer: when I mount internal (which I was only able to attempt once, i can't even select that now) it says that it can't read the disk. Mount exterior (again to computer) does nothing.
I can still boot to recovery (though when browsing files trying to go up a level from exterior SD to internal results in a reboot of recovery.
Anyway, I can still use adb commands, but no fastboot commands.
I'm really having trouble here, and am getting pretty frustrated. Not totally freaked out as it looks like a soft bricking since I can get to hboot and recovery. But, now that there are mounting issues this is beyond my scope, and the issue is not showing up in searches of this (EvoLTE) forum.
Oh yeah, this is me, haha ------> :crying:

Funny how the mind works; I've read the stickies and many threads countless times (I read much before asking questions which is why I've got such a low post count and have asked maybe two questions since joining xda) but never noticed anything about internal card not mounting until I reread after I had that issue. That section never jumped out at me before.
Anyway, I'll just go back to reading and keeping quiet. Not in a huge rush anymore since I've got my tablet and reactivated my old Pre from '09, haha. It's actually nice to use with the right patches and the clock speed damn near doubled.

Hey man I wish I had a one line solution to your problems but I don't. The reason I said read the sticky threads is that you give the impression that your not too familiar with flashing kernels , fasboot and root in general. I'm not being a smartass here.
If your S-on you should have used fastboot before ti flash a boot img and I'm pretty sure you need a fastboot command to HTC dev unlock your phone.
Besides all that there must be a couple of thousand threads started by people reporting bootloops because of being S-on.
Now that you can't mount storage and or get a ROM a boot I would read up on getting S-off. Someone above said it can be done through botloader. Once your S-off you should be able to download and flash a ROM.
Good luck

Ha, I do to! Sorry I didn't mean to sound snarky in the last reply.
I have definitely used fastboot, but not since rooting. I just didn't want to sound like a know-it-all, which is I suppose why it ended up going so far the way. Seemed a better bet than "I've read everything ever now shut up and fix my phone!!" Haha Unless it was the crying smiley, lol. I haven't been on XDA from a computer in forever and when I saw the smilies it made me laugh and I peppered the post with them to amuse myself. Not to say that I wasn't frustrated, of course.
I'm absolutely planning to s-off. Was already looking into it over the past week or so after getting so tired of having to use Flash Image all the time, but had't jumped yet because I was still reading the threads to find best method. When I thought I had there would be people with same hboot or software version having issue with that method... at any rate, I'm still not able to get fastboot recognized (issuing commands from platform-tools, and adb commands are working, says "FastbootUSB"-even on two computers, both Macs tho) so while I continue to search for the solution there I'm going to repartition phone since internal SD is not being read.
I'm sure that after I have the fastboot thing solved, I'll be cool. I was having concerns that there may be a hardware issue since I didn't do anything I hadn't done before that got me into the boot loop state. Then the internal SD thing, which strangely just popped up after the phone had been down for about a day already.
Again, I apologize for sounding snarky or irritated. I really do appreciate your popping in to help out, so thank you!
No worries man and good luck

Hi.
I haven't updated the Evo 4GLTE since April 2012 and want to update it to whatever the current stock rom is. I'm giving it to a friend who doesn't have much experience with phones/technology and might accidentally select "Bootloader" or "Recovery" from the restart menu if I gave it to her in its current condition. Needless to say, I've been out of the "flashing roms every week" game for quite some time on this phone. I don't care if it loses root in the process.
It is currently rooted with S-On running Stock w/Goodies 1.6, Hboot version 1.12.
What would happen if I accepted the pushed system update?
Do I have to install Linux to acquire S-Off to return to stock or is their an easier method?
Thanks in advance!

You can use Facepalm to get S-off. It's Windows friendly and takes less than five minutes from start to finish. Afterwards you can run VipeRUU and it will update your software version to the newest one and get you the newest firmware, also (you must be S-off to use it). It will also return the phone to completely stock, unrooted & S-on. The link to VipeRUU is in the Development thread. Facepalm can be found in Original Development.

Thanks for the quick reply. In order to use Facepalm, I need to obtain SuperCID. The only method I found says that it's ancient and outdated.
I also saw (on the Facepalm thread) "SuperCID for HTC Evo 4G LTE:" and then some adb code. Do I just run those commands to obtain SuperCID?
Thanks again!

Run the very first set of commands posted in the Facepalm thread. You can copy and paste them into your command prompt. Once successful run the rest of the commands. Make sure that the two files you need to download are in the same directory as your ADB folder and you'll be good to go:thumbup:

Thanks for all the help. I finally had time to sit down and run all the processes. VipeRUU scared me a bit by being stuck on "flashing" while the HTC process bar (on the phone) was about 2/3 full for about 8 minutes, but then it completed and everything is totally fine.
I appreciate your replies and glad that XDA still retains such great community members such as yourself.
Its been 7 hours, time to ask for help. My wife cracked her rezound so bought one on Ebay. Both of us have had rooted rezounds for about 2 years (both s-off), keep getting "can't find a seat", install device and drivers", and "critical error" messages while trying juopunut (however you spell it) s-off. Have installed: HTC sync, adb manager (SDK blah blah blah), and all the "all in one tools" I can find. Going crazy. Currently unlocked bootloader, AmonRa, and installed super Su. Phone is stock as hell and still on gingerbread (scared to update to ics through verizon ota update cause i dont trust verizon or their firmware. I am totally lost. Please help.

refer to my s-off guide here in the rezound q&a forums...the windows version.which im assuming your trying to use was ONLY meant for ICS and was removed because the windows version hard bricked one too many devices
Edit: as you are on gingerbread that too was produced by verizon and htc....same as pure stock ics....you can also get a non verizon sense based ics rom on here which runs much better than verizons gingerbread or ics
You think it would be easier to s-off with or without taking the OTA update?

You don't really have a choice here... You have Amon Ra (a custom recovery) so even if you take the OTA it won't install, OTA updates require a stock recovery.
The Windows S-OFF method will only work with ICS (there was no GB version), so you could install the 3.14.605.12 RUU first (this will give you a stable ICS version installed), but with the messages you are getting it sounds like you have a driver or USB issue, or perhaps Fastboot enabled (not the same as fastboot from the bootloader) or USB Debugging not turned on.
Be very cautious with the Windows ControlBear, @REV3NT3CH is correct, it was removed because it bricked a lot of phones, it was never stable... it works for most people, but there are circumstances that if put together correctly will brick you device permanently. You could try the Linux method, it is the only official way and there is a GB version on http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm that will work with your device.
TBH, I'd not even bother. I'd look into seeing why ADB/Fastboot doesn't work right. First I'd uninstall HTC Sync (should have been called HTC Stync LOL).

Okay, well, here is where I get confused. When I s-off'd 2 years ago it was on gingerbread and I still have the old juopunutbear program so in theory everything should be the same. To my knowledge, I can't figure out a way to toggle debugging on GB. Oh, can anyone link me to (literally) from start to finish, every single download I will need to successfully s-off given the specs that I've provided that I'm working with? I would appreciate it more than you know because I must be doing something wrong. Thanks!!

If I may chime in...
Would it be okay if I were to dualboot a Linux image on my Windows PC to perform S-OFF? There wouldn't be any command errors or extra precautions, right?

yes its ok to dualboot...thats my setup and works fine...i suggest using 32 bit version of linux as that is what is recommended....my guide on here gives perfect step by step instructions for it
I think(needs clarification) you have to fastboot flash boot.img, boot back into rom and try again.

try a different wire....ive seen a few rezounds where its gotten stuck on jpbear arrow screen and renders it permanently BRICKED
Edit: again this only happens on windows....should of followed my guide bud
I will be honest, I have used the Windows utility every time, it hasn't failed me yet, once I have gotten to that point and the wire trick failed, it should continue to prompt you to do the trick or tell you what to do... Just run ControlBear again, it should take you to the point where you do the wire trick again, if not, look at the ControlBear Troubleshooting page on unlimited.io

Actually, you are almost there... if you are stuck in Fastboot, try this from step #2, remember you are in Windows, so you might have to copy files into and issue the commands from the appropriate directory instead of using "sudo":
There are three ways to recover your ROM. Try each one in until you succeed:
Open the cmd prompt that is located in your ControlBear folder where you unzipped all of the files.
Type the following cmds into the cmd prompt.
1. ControlBear -r (This is run with the phone at the JuopunutBear/Arrow screen) If this succeeds recovery is complete otherwise continue to Step 2.
2. ControlBear -f (This is run with the phone at the fastboot screen). If this succeeds you're done otherwise continue to Step 3.
3. fastboot flash boot boot_backup.img
4. fastboot flash recovery recovery_backup.img (This is done with the phone in fastboot mode) If this succeeds continue to Step 5.
5. Boot the phone to android and install busybox from the market if not already installed.
6. sudo ./adb push sdcard.img /data/local/tmp/
7. sudo ./adb shell
8. $ su
9. # busybox dd if=/data/local/tmp/sdcard.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk1 conv=notrunc
10. Reboot the phone.
