[Q] Google Now location based reminders - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Anyone having any luck with the latest release of Google Now and location based reminders? Time based ("Google, remind me to feed that cat at 9:00 am") seems to work great, but no joy with "Google, remind me to buy cat food at Kroger's".
Running stock 3.16.xxx
Thx

I've found that I need to leave the "Remind Me" part out and just say "buy coffee when I get to work".
And it only recognizes Work and Home for me at the moment.

Thanks. I suspect it's Sense that is crippling the location element. Really too bad because, in your example, unless you're employed by Starbucks it might be slightly difficult to buy anything but a cup of coffee at work

I went into Maps>Settings>Location Settings>Manage Your Places and found a list of places including "Home".
I tried "Buy coffee when I get to (a few of those places)" and it worked.
"Buy coffee when I get to Target" brought up search results.
I Starred Target and no change.
I'm hoping it just takes some time to sync.

You bring up a good point. I tend to try and fly under the radar as far as location based social apps/tracking (foursquare/check-in type things) so it's entirely possible I've disabled what ever it is that Google Now needs to find me for reminders. Come to think of it, I've not gotten the Public Transit card to work either.
If I were to give Google another piece of my soul, any idea which Location Settings would I need to enable to trigger the reminders and location based cards? Which one's might I be able to leave turned off to keep my whereabouts mysterious?

I keep Latitude off but that's the only one I try to stay away from because it broadcasts where you are to people based on your settings and it's a battery hog.
There are so many settings in maps, and sync, and settings, and ....
I'd go in, poke around for a while and see what your willing to give up.

Hootie Hoo, I've had some success. Enabled the "Report from this device" setting in Google Maps>Settings>Location settings and I got a location based reminder. I believe I asked "Google, remind me to buy a raspberry shake at the nearby Culver's restaurant" No problem at all submitting the request by voice and having the right information come up for approval.
I'll add a couple of caveats. The reminder triggered after I has been in the location for at least 5 minutes or so (and had already ordered the milkshake ) and I happened to be in a location where I was picking up 4G data speed. I think there is defiantly an issue of how fast the phone/app is able to report back to the Google mothership and fire off the reminder as opposed to having the location coordinates processed from within the phone itself. I suppose that might be one more reason you are encouraged to enable the WiFi detection element of location services.
In any event, while currently this is not a particularly smooth and seamless feature, I think as the network builds out and the app matures the Now location reminders have a lot of potential to be an extremely valuable and handy tool.

I'm finding that "remind me to <do stuff> when I get home" always works great but "remind me to <do stuff> when I get to work" only ever returns search results. Google Now hes the 2 locations in Settings but doesn't seem to be able to use the Work location.

I've released an app that aims to deliver accurate location based reminders. It's called Geobells. If you're still having trouble, you should try it out. Click to visit on play store

Have you been able to get this to work? I'm on a VZW GNex , but have the same issue with my work location as you. It recognizes home, and even lots of random nearby stores, supermarkets. But it will not recognize anything based on my work location.

gps navigation

anyone know any software that does gps navigation for free? or at least one that has a 30 day trial, or some kind of trial.
I've had good luck with www.nav4all.com but it needs a GPS keep-alive like BAF's GPS Toggle or the Holus GPS Viewer. Of course YMMV.
There are alot of places out there to find software. I personally use Garmin Mobile XT. It took me a LONG time to piece this together, but now that I have all the parts, I was able to make this sing flawlessly on my mogul. It can graph in 3d, or 2d, and it's extremely accurate considering this is a cell phone. It also has the garmin online feature which gives you weather, traffic, and gas prices (to name a few) in the area the gps is centered on.
Awesome program.
I've also played with Tracky, and purchased this one. I like it, but it's made more for people looking to do Geocaching.
Live search and google maps are good if your looking for free. However, if your in a pinch, and do not have internet, they suck cause there are no maps without internet.
Garmin loads it all onto the memory card. The software I use allows me to create maps and upload them to the unit.
Hope this helps you out a bit.

Yeah, I tried GPSToday and it worked but as I don't have an unlimited data plan, I didn't want something d/l data.
If you goof N4A will dial in but only passes a few bytes of info to update your course. I logged in maybe 6 times for route updates over a week and it only used 200k of data (I called VZ to confirm amount of data used).
Many folks like the bells and whistles of the Garmin and TomTom type products; Nav4all dosen't show a map while driving (per their FAQ,this is for saftey reasons, so it talks the directions to you).
It doesn't announce street names but does tell you what lane to be in to get to your goal ("Just ahead, stay on the left, two hiways" means you need to be in the two left lanes to get where you're going). The demo on their website will show you what to expect.
The screen gives a very basic arrow indicator but Nav4all got me all over San Diego and Anaheim CA with no hitches. Also works well here in rural Tennessee.
Good luck!

Hey Baffles, isn't this one yours? I love it and use it almost exclusively. The only time I use the Holux product (spelled wrong in the above post) is if I want to see the status of the satellites. Thanks for the hard work, man!

Osteo, for precisely your type of needs GPSToday already has an option to prevent it from downloading any data. In the Map Window->OptionsMenu->Settings dialog, enable the option "Disable Data At All Times", and Uncheck the option "Initiate Connection if Needed". Also, for added benefit, click on "More" on the first Settings screen, and Uncheck "Show Address on Today screen". This will change the today screen display to show your most recent latitude/longitude/altitude and time of last fix etc, none of which require data access. Please install version 0.9.5 to get this and other "offline use" benefits.
Thanks

Cool! Loved the toggling of your product but the data issue kept me from using. As I'm a chronic tinker-er I'll give it another go. I guess I stumbled on one of the initial builds early on and gave up on it. Thanks for the info!

HTC Locations with Trips

I've been trying to find a nav app that will let me import pre-planned trips.
In my research I found only two; 1) copilot, 2) HTC Locations with Trips tab.
Well I can't stand #1, and it seems that #2 was only available in Asia, unless I'm missing something? it seems like a feature that should be standard as it has since the first days of dedicated gps devices but it still hasn't arrived on Android, not even in the Google suite of apps despite the constant posts in the Google forums requesting this function.
being able to create a specific route or record a route for the purpose of sharing and reuse I don't think is a lot to ask.
until this happens their will always be a market for a dedicated GPS.

I only use it for Aviation and I import maps with preplanned flights.
It supports a number of different maps that can be side loaded on your sdcard so no data connection is needed.
Edit ... I forgot to add it's Free
that's a nice non-data tracker, like Google's My Tracks without the 3g map, thx..... but I still can't record for vehicle nav with text to speech which is what I'd really like.

[Q] [REQ] "Time to leave" application/reminder

I am looking for a program that will warn me when it is time to leave to be in time for an appointment. I would like it to have the following possibilities:
Reads next appointments from calendar to know the next location(s) I have to be at
If location is not known / well specified, I should have the possibility to input this - preferably with a daily/weekly reminder
Knows my location (wifi/net/GPS)
Knows my favorite way of transportation (car/bike/walk/bus)
Checks the time to get from previous location to next location
Warns me with a set interval when to leave
Does anyone know such a program? I know some programming, but I'm not good enough to start writing this myself. If you can write it, I'm certain there is a good market for it, and I can be your first tester and give you guidance on the needs.
Google Now does some of this. It will learn your travel patterns and advise you when it's time to leave for an appointment.

So did you find any application to do that? Google now is able to estimate the time of travel, but it just shows up as a card when we are supposed to leave and not as a notification/reminder. Did you find any app which satisfied you?

[Q] Play Music UK - How do you switch back from US?

Google Play Music is now live in the UK with the new Music Matching service. I, like many, used a UK/US tunnel app about a year ago to be able to get Play Music and have been enjoying streaming my 'owned forever' (Spotify etc...) and not on my device (iStuff), so why do I need a 32mb phone!!!! (Galaxy Nexus (Nexus 4 when they finally put it up for sale) ever since.
However, now the difficult bit comes......
How do I change my Play Music Account to switch my email from the US site to UK?
Cheers,
Tim

I thought it would just work?
I am in the same boat, haven't tried it yet though!
It appears all that 'frigged' to US are not able to use the Music Matching service. I am quite happy to have all of my music 'removed' and re-upload with Music Matching. There is also the issue with Charts and Purchases still being in US and therefore I cannot buy anything as my 'card' is UK based.

Well I havent bought anything via the US store, I just use the music storage and streaming facility!
Me too, but with the UK Wallet now getting 'cards' and 'gifts' it means we can give/request them as Christmas presents!!!!
Im in the same position, but am not seeing any sort of option for this at all?
Same scenario as the rest of you - UK user, created an account via proxy last year. Scan and match service not working.
In desperation I deleted my entire library to see if this would reset the account - it didn't! :crying:
Have opened a support ticket with Google, will post any updates as and when I hear.
Will be monitoring this thread to see if anyone has a fix

I have a "frigged" Google music account I activated via proxy too.
I uninstalled Google Music on my UK GS3 and when I reinstalled the app the shopping bag was in the Music with prices for songs and albums in GBP.
On my Xoom with US ROM I forced stopped, cleared data and un-installed updates, then updated the app via the play store and the link to the Music Store appeared, this time all in GBP
I have deleted my library and will be watching this thread as music match is, in principal, a great solution.
Just to let you all know - I've had a reply from Google requesting a screen shot of the 'Google Recommends' page listing all song prices in US Dollars.
We'll see where we go from here!
this is very frustrating!
got my nexus a couple of weeks ago and got a bit over excited so signed up for google music using a proxy, then after seeing the poor upload speed I have, decided to wait for the new wonderful scan and match service - so far I haven't got it to work, tried deleting everything from before, including anything I had already uploaded - but it just won't match anything for me, have managed a couple of hundred tunes uploaded in 15 hours, but I'm away tomorrow so my grand plan for using the match service is well and truly rubber ducked!
if anyone figures this out, please shout, very loudly:good:
Same problem here, set up by a proxy 6 months or so ago. I would delete and re-upload by library (even though this would pain me with 10K+ tracks) but it doesn't sound like this fixes the issue. It's all very frustrating.
I will submit a support ticket too and hopefully Google with fix it. Admittedly it is our fault for bodging it, but in fairness Google didn't make it too difficult to do and weren't seemingly bothered. After-all it is only because we're all Android/Google enthusiasts that we bothered doing it in the first place! Fingers crossed for a fix ASAP.
I have received 2 emails back from my own ticket, both not of use:
1. Change the upload location (it's not the upload location of issue)
2. Check my wallet has a UK address (it does)
I have asked for them to change my 'Play connection' from US to UK, or delete my Play subscription completely so as I can reconnect.
Note, like a previous person, I have Clear All Data on my app and Uninstalled Updates. Reinstalling from the play store now bring up a new app with a 'Shopping Bag' for GBP purchases (however, I am still a US user!!!)

Google: Did you ever use a US IP address as a workaround to get to Google Music?
Tim: Yes, to be able to register for Google Music (before it was available in the UK) I used a Tunnel app to set my IP to US and then registered. Once Registered I set my IP back to UK
Google: Can you see if you were tyo change your IP to its true location the issue persists?
Tim: I am back to my true location. Google Music only checks the IP location on 1st setup. After that you change it back to UK so everything else works. When I access google music from any device it goes to the US site
Google: To be clear, changing your IP back to UK the issue has resolved itself!!!!!
Tim: No, it has not resolved itself!. "Repeat of previous message", i.e. 1st setup of GM needed US IP, then you set your IP back. If you access from any device - all with different IP's obviously!!!!!! then I get to the US site!!!!!
Does anyone else anything useful from their Google Techs as mine is clearly not aware that IP's exist on different device and generally are not static!

Question What password manager do you use

Samsung pass doesn't work. What do you guys use I just came from iphone and it has a password manager built in. What free ones are available
1password. Works everywhere and on everything.
Bitwarden has a free account offering and their premium is very cheap.
Bitwarden is free, open source and the premium is literally $10 per year if you wanted it but it's not needed, everything is available for free except the encrypted cloud storage.
I use Bitwarden's $10 a year tier so I can use my YubiKeys with it.
I don't. Google password manager is free and works flawlessly. Anything else is a waste of time.

Under passwords and autofill in settings. Then select autofill service.
Bitwarden $10 annual plan. Avoid using LastPass as they have had several security breaches recently.

Good luck if your Google account ever gets breached. Or if Google one day bans your account like they've been known to do to others for seemingly no reason. I used Google's password manager for years but when this flaw was pointed out to me, I switched to Bitwarden that same day and I haven't looked back.
It's also very easy to breach your Google account and thus all your others if your phone is stolen.
Like iPhone, a stolen Android phone's PIN could be used to change Google account password
A report from The Wall Street Journal last week sounded the alarm on an obvious, but frightening issue on iPhone...

Google also thanks you for all your data. But in all seriousness don't keep all your eggs in one basket. Using 1 service or company for everything (Like Google does) is a terrible security practice. I'm not saying don't use Google, I'm saying don't use it for everything PLUS (tinfoil hat time) the way things are going with less and less privacy, I expect Google to start using passwords saved in its services in an attempt to provide more services to users but in doing so they have access to everything about you, bank info, cellular carrier login, other email logins, everything and frankly that would frighten me. This is why I self host on bitwarden, everything is in my hard drive AND encrypted on backblaze.

I definitely agree. I might just be really lazy and don't care anymore. I could tie tomorrow and all the passwords I had would be irrelevant lol.
Does Google password manager fill in apps?
I second avoiding LastPass. In addition to the semi-annual breaches, their pricing is ridiculous. $50/year to store 100kB of data in the cloud? There has been zero evolution to their app over the last 5 years, so it is not like they have heavy RnD costs.

Your passwords will matter to family that left after you're gone. I have several people in my life that have a detailed guide on how to access my digital life if/when I'm gone.
Bank info, logins, email stuff, just to make thier lives easier getting things of mine closed etc.

Yeah that's true. My good friend just passed at 37. His poor wife couldn't access his iPhone and it made things very difficult to process things and get photos etc.... I will do this process for my wife.

These are all valid points but chances of happening are very slim.

Is it worth the risk for that slim chance? If someone gets ahold of your online identity, they can ruin every part of your life in a matter of minutes, all while you're totally locked out from being able to stop them. My Bitwarden isn't even tied to my Gmail address for the login and I keep my 2FA in Authy separately, with Authy set to not allow multi-device. It would be pretty difficult for anyone to breach me unless they put in a lot of work that my meager net worth wouldn't be worth doing.
Besides, Bitwarden is actually more convenient than Google's password manager in a lot of areas. When enabling the accessibility options, I've noticed that the password popup shows in places that Google's never did which means less having to manually copy and paste.

I'll look into bitwarden. Thanks
KeePass Offline; only caveat is that you have to back it up manually (so each time I update it, I copy it to other devices in case the phone dies or is erased or stolen; my password is super long but I only have to remember one password).
