Has Root worked properly? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

S2 on Vodafone UK factory 4.1.2 rom, I've followed the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 and the only hassle I had was that I couldn't see the busybox zip from the CWM menu, so I had to move it from the SD card to the internal storage and then run through the process again. It seemed to complete, and I have the superuser app - but when I try to boot into the CWM recovery I just get the standard recovery.
Any ideas? How do I know if it's rooted, and am I not supposed to be able to boot into the CWM recovery using the same vol up, home and power button startup?

Searc in play store for "root checker" or similar.
Install one of the apps and follow the instructions given.
It will tell you if it's rooted or not.
Cheers

Downloaded root checker and it says it's not rooted?
As mentioned, I tried to install both the CMW zip and the Busybox zip from the SD card - I could install the CMW zip from the stock recovery, but after CMW installed and the menu appeared, I couldn't see the Busybox zip. The CMW menu took me to the internal memory folders. So I moved the Busybox zip to the internal storage, ran through the steps to install CMW again and this time I could find the Busybox zip and it seemed to install okay. I now have the superuser app installed, but no root access, and can't boot into the CMW recovery - it just boots to the stock recovery?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Thanks Krazy, that's me rooted now - incl touch Now for a rom, I've downloaded NeatRom so I'll give that a go...

I see you've got it sorted, but fyi....the method you used was for ICS not JB. .....

Android revolution no root access!

I just installed Android Revloution HD(3.0.4) on my HTC sensation. Everything works fine but i DO NOT have root access anymore. Whenever i try to open an app that requires root access it says it cannot do it.
I used Revolutionary and followed the steps to install su to gain root access and everything worked fine until i installed the Revolution ROM.
Can somebody please help me with this or tell me how to gain root access back on my phone? I was trying to use Titanium backup on my phone and it says "cannot gain root access"
Any help would be appreciated
I posted this solution in the Desire HD section just the other day.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246523
Download and flash it in recovery. Hope it helps.

for some reason it seems like i cant boot in recovery, when i click the vol down and power button it boots the rom how it would if u just pressed the power button.
im sorry if this is dumb but i am kinda new to installing custom roms, but does this mean i have to instal recovery again to my phone?
actually i followed the link you posted and tried the Clear data option from applications and it worked like a charm. At first my super user app used to force close on me, but not anymore i can access apps which require root access just fine now.
One more silly question...Can you re-install recovery (clockworkmod)? Cos like i said i cant seem to boot in recovery. If so what steps should i take so that in the future i can instal from sd?
1. Save the superuser zip I attached below to the root of your SD card.
2. Install ClockworkMod and flash recovery (2nd option).
3. DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!! I can't even begin to explain how important this is. If anything goes wrong this is your safety net. Without a backup image you could end up having to re-install the ROM from scratch or even worse.
4. If you need to flash the zip then reboot into recovery. (You can either reboot in recovery using ClockworkMod or by selecting it from the pop up menu when holding down your power button although I think this is ROM dependant.)
5. After you've done your back up then choose "install zip from SD".
6. Then "choose zip from SD card".
7. Scroll to the zip and select it.
8. Reboot system and enjoy.
If you need any further help or run into any problems then let me know.
Worked just fine! Thanks alot for your help! Appreciate it!

[Q] Gnote warranty replacement. Rooted w Odin. ROMS abort installation...why? Stuck w

My old one started getting the sim card error.Still under warranty so...new phone in hand. (Refurb) I rooted using Odin 3v1.85 installed SuperUser and ClockworkModRecovery. All moves along fine. Now I try to install ROM zips (tried three) and they all abort quickly. It starts opening and checking and aborts saying error with zip file. I have downloaded three different ROMs and redid it from different sites too...same thing. What am I doing wrong?
Did you update your recovery after rooting? I recommend twrp which can be found in the original development section.
"Update my recovery" Hmmmm....since I am unsure what you mean...I guess not. TOG recommended TWRP over CWM too. I'll go take a look see. By "original dev section" I assume you mean the other subforum?
Quick explanation of updating my recovery?
Thanks for your valuable time. Here, have a coffee...U)
EDIT:
OK, I went, found and downloaded the latest TWRP2.zp for Odin install, since I'm most familiar with that method. So, am I right in these steps?
1. Re-root w Odin using .tar file from the TWRP.zip using the PDA button.
2.Update?
3. Reboot into recovery (does twrp use the same method as cwm?)
3.Install ROM zip of choice...rejoice?
That's way too complicated broseph...
You still have cwm right?
Just Go back to the twrp thread, download the recovery flashable zip.
Put it on your sdcard and flash it in cwm like a Rom.
Once that's done reboot recovery and you'll now have twrp
Button combos are built into the boatloaders, changing recovery has no effect on them whatsoever.
OK
Thanks again all....I did all of the above and finally got the ROM to load, then Gapps, and the rest of the drill. I never could access my back-up that I stored on my ext SD card and the card is not showing in any file explorers (although it shows in storage, under settings ?).
AT least I have a functioning phone...yay.
Sd card is named as /emmc and several other names.

[Q] CWM Recovery erased after reboot?

Hello,
I have just successfully rooted my S3 using "Heimdall Frontend" following the tutorial here:
However I found initially when leaving "No Reboot" unchecked I was unable to boot into CWM until I checked no Reboot then once the flash was complete I manually went into CWM by holding the recovery keys.
I then installed the SuperSu zip file on my SD card and rebooted my phone into it's newly rooted state.
HOWEVER.. I went to boot my S3 into CWM Recovery to flash a custom ROM and I'm only able to boot into the standard android recovery.. It says on the tutorial that versions 4.1.2+ need to tick "No reboot" otherwise the newer firmware simply wipes over CWM recovery every reboot..
I was under the impression that CWM was there as a safety net in case my phone ever played up and needed to be unrooted?
read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911726
UPDATE: After using ROM Manager to boot into CWM to create a backup, it gave the option to "Fix reflashing to original recovery after reboot"
Is it a good idea to have CWM permanently flashed as my recovery? How would I revert back to the stock recovery should I want to unroot the device?
Thanks

Help with T769 Tmobile Recovery & Custom ROM on 4.0.4

Hey guys I'm trying to install the Themed ROM for P769 Locked bootloader. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468880) I have the phone rooted from awhile back, i cant recall what i used to root it, the phone is still on 4.0.4, I am trying to put a recovery on it to install this ROM, but I dont see any recoveries for 4.0.4, I've seen a few different ones for JB but I'm not sure if its compatible.
This is the recovery it said to install (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095825) but the issue is that the link to the recovery was taken down, so I'm not sure what recovery I can install.
TLDR: I got a rooted T769 on 4.0.4 and i would like to install the themed ROM for T769 with Locked BL.

I'm guessing you mean that you have a P769 T-Mobile version.
Here is a link to the L9 Recovery Installer - https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8tegpmiyh8moa5/L9RecoveryInstaller_1.5.0.apk
Since your already rooted, just make sure that you download and install BusyBox by stericson from the playstore, before installing the L9 recovery installer. It needs BusyBox installed on your device for it to work properly.
Download the Kumakan themed ROM to your external sdcard.
Open the BusyBox app and click on and select the version of BusyBox to install to the device and select version 1.21.0 to install.
Then install the L9 recovery installer app. Open the app and select "Install recovery" then select "jb/ics stable version", then grant it root rights through SuperSU when asked for permission.
Once it says recovery is installed, select power down/reboot the device. After the phone starts to boot up you'll see your front keys blinking this means you have recovery success and to enter into recovery immediately press and hold volume(-) down button while lights are still blinking... You are now in recovery mode. I would highly recommend that you immediately preform a nandroid backup of your L9 right now before doing anything else. Select backup and restore, choose backup and choose backup to external sdcard.
Once the nandroid backup is done then you are free to flash the Kumakan themed ROM that you want to install. Just follow the directions from the ROM thread to install the ROM.

Sorry for the late reply!
Did you make a nandroid backup when you installed and booted recovery?
If so, all you have to do is just reboot to recovery and restore your nandroid backup and you'll be back in businesses.

Latest CWM SuperUser flashable zip

Hi, folks,
I have pretty much wasted the past 3-4 hours trying to get cwm superuser to work.
I installed .314 UK generic firmware using FlashTool & unticked wipe data, then used TowelRoot v12 to root then flashed NUT's dual recovery but no matter what cwm superuser flashable zip I use I cant get it to work right, it always prompts me to use recovery install when I open the SuperUser app, tried that but I just get error saying there was a error installing SuperUser. If I disable SuperUser then install SuperSU & SuperSU pro from market I get root access but SuperSU has always had issues with AdAway applying the hosts file so I switched to CWM SuperUser when I was on .402 firmware.
I did have the flashable CWM zip file but can no longer find it
Really need some help with this.

If you're not on CWM, you can't use CWM SuperUser. Install SuperSU and use that. You can also switch to AdFree which is what I use. You'll also need to install XZDualRecovery to be able to write to /system.

Thanks for the reply
I was using CWM superuser with no issues on .402 UK generic & Philz recovery, I have always had issues with SuperSU both on my old Galaxy S3 with custom roms & now on my Z2, most of the time with SuperSU any app that needs root access will freeze due to the delay in SuperSU showing the alert & as I mentioned above with AdAway not being able to apply the hosts file 90% of the time.
I also have Dual Recovery installed but keep losing it, seems that using the NDR tools app it installs causes the phone to forget that the recoveries are installed.
Just want some help with this issue & it would be great if someone could post a working kitkat CWM superuser flashable zip.
Can anyone else help me with this?
Have just done a full wipe & used Flashtool to install UK generic .314, have used EasyRoot 12.1 to root & it says I'm rooted. I then install CWM SuperUser from market & when opening it says the su binary needs to be updated & only gives recovery install or cancel options, I chose recovery & it reboots into Philz recovery & says it has installed but Philz says root is broken. When I boot the phone again I get a notification from SuperUser saying the binary needs to be updated again but when I tap recovery it just says there was a error.
Really would appreciate some help here as I need to get AdAway installed, change the DPI & use the nextapp kitkat SD fix app.
Cheers.
EDIT: forget it, got it fixed myself, now CWM superuser is working fine.
