Well, I have that dilemma that we all go through. I am currently on a Family Share Plan with five phones. My line is the primary line and is eligible for an upgrade at this time. I have the Motorola Droid Razr HD with unlimited data. I understand that by doing a subsidized upgrade to a new phone, I will lose my unlimited data on my phone. That is what makes this so difficult. Here is the dilemma though. I am 43 years old, and my eyes are starting to go. I need a bigger screen. I am also a large person - 6'3", 270 lbs with big old sausages for fingers. So, with that said, I definitely want something the size of the Note II or bigger. The question is, do I upgrade now or wait for the Note III, which is rumored for release in September?
The benefit of upgrading now is that I can probably recoup most, if not all of the $199 cost of the Note II by selling my Droid Razr HD, which is in flawless condition. The downside is that I will be stuck with an older phone for the next 20 months.
Thanks for the help...hopefully some of you guys have been in this situation and can help out.
PS - I really don't care about a lot of the newer features of the Galaxy S4. I just want a larger screen!
Buy it outright thats what i did its expensive but anything to keep my unlimited data and i hardly use 2 ti 3gb a month but its just thw fact and the common piece of mind that i have unlimited...or you uae an upgrade on another line then transfer that phone to you line...

Whichever phone you choose, I highly recommend buying used or full retail in order to keep your unlimited data. You may not use more than 2GB data in a month now, but you never know when that unlimited data will come in handy. And once you lose it, it's gone.
Craigslist and Swappa are good sources for used devices, and there is always ebay. If you want the Note 3, be prepared to pay full retail unless you wait a few weeks for used ones to become available.
I am extremely reluctant to lose my unlimited data...they all seem to be $500 and up in my area on Craigslist.
You cab upgrade without losing your unlimited. If you have multiple lines on your account, just transfer the upgrade to one of the lines that doesn't have unlimited. Order the phone you want, activate it, then swap your SIM card to it. Reactivate the phone that was originally on that line. This works easiest if you order through Amazon or Verizon's website. Don't go to a store, just do it yourself through online ordering. This is how I've done my last three upgrades while keeping unlimited.

I did every step, VPN is running, I downloaded your wifi tether apk and installed it, changed the SSID and enabked encryption and changed the 128bit security phrase, snd when I press start tether, the log shows "setting ad-hock mode - failed"
Appreciate the help.

Buy full retail at Costco. 499 and its brand new. Better than buying from Craigslist at the same price.

+1. I've done this twice with zero issue. I don't believe you can do this through Amazon. I think with Amazon the phone must stay on the line it's activated on for several months, or you will incur extra charges.
Best Buy and Radio Shack do not have this requirement.

Although he does have the family plan i think they might screw him out of unlimited with an upgrade on any line, im not sure..i know on my wife n my family plan i have unlimited and she has the old get double data for regular price thing and i know if either of us upgrade we gota switch to the new plans which is stupid so i dont care ill buy phones outright for us as long as we both have those plans
It works just fine with Amazon. I've done two phones through Amazon this way and one through Verizon. The only requirement is the phone stay in use on your account for six months. Doesn't matter what number it is on. This requirement is the same wether going through Amazon or Verizon.

I currently have four lines on my account, with the family share plan. Two are smartphones with unlimited data, the other two are flip phones. When an upgrade comes up, I go to the my Verizon site and transfer the upgrade to one of the flip phones. Order the new phone on that line. When phone arrives, activate on the line it was ordered for. Immediately swap in my SIM card, get back on my Verizon, reactivate the flip phone on the line that was upgraded, which immediately cancels the new data plan for that line. Works perfect every time.

OMG! You're a genius! I have five phones on my account, and one of them is not unlimited. I can transfer the upgrade to that line, upgrade to the Note 2, then move the Note 2 back to my unlimited line. Woohoo!
I changed device type to Samsun S3 and it works fine now with no errors. Let us see if t-mobile is going to add additional fees to my bill, or if this vpn will work. I hope it does work as I hate comcast and want to cancel them.

Thats what I was told. Me and my wife have 4 lines all together and 3 of them are eligible for upgrades one including unlimited data. They told me multiple times if I upgrade any of them, my whole plan changes to the share everything, losing my unlimited data. Nothing changes if you add line though, which is what I did and swapped out the sim. Your best bet is to buy off contract. Keep your unlimited because its nice not having to keep an eye on how much you use.

Guys, I am lost, I still cannot see my SSID on my ipad or my laptop, I started VPN first and it is connected, then started wifi tether, had to change device profile to samsung s3 to get it to start without errors, I did change SSID, enabled encryption, and changed the 128bit security phrase.
Tether is running and showing d/l and u/l, download stays zero but upload goes up as time passes. But I cannot see my SSID any where to connect. Please, I urgently need help. Thanks.

First off you need to go to the right forum for your phone. This is Verizon Note 2, you need to go to T-mobile Note 2 forum and create your own thread in the help section instead of trying to hijack someone else's thread.

I thought of doing that based on the lower retail price. But the guys at the kiosk in Costco said that the only way they could sell the phone was if I signed a new contract. Didn't matter if I was willing to pay full retail or not.

I pulled the trigger on the Note 2...
As I previously stated, I have a 700 minute Family Share plan with five lines. Three have unlimited data, one is on a 2GB data plan, and the fifth is not a smartphone. I transferred my upgrade to my wife's line (non-smartphone) and upgraded to the Note 2. My plan did not change. When I get it, I will activate it on my wife's line, then call and have her feature phone put back on the line. Then I should be able to drop my SIM into the Note 2 and have unlimited data on that phone.

Spent some time with VZ customer service today and finally got them to throw me an early upgrade to get the note 2. original update was 5/13. The only restriction they gave me on the upgrade was I couldn't use it to purchase any Apple products
I'm letting my All you can eat data go in lieu of family data. I'm not paying 1500.00 for my wifes and my note 2.
Wait so you got an upgrade but still kept your unlimited data?

No, he lost it. It says in his second line break.
i still have unlimited data after they gave my account the upgrade. I lose the unlimited data once I use the upgrade, or that what the rep led me to believe.

Since it was a family plan, why didn't you open a new line and do the upgrade that way? IMO, losing unlimited data is not worth it...$30/month = unlimitd or $30 / month = 2gb. I'd pretty much have to buy into their 10gb plan, which is way too much for our family/just me. If you use netflix, dropbox, etc... it just isn't worth it. You'll eat that data in no time.

Open new line and use it to get discounted Note 2. Activate Note 2 on that line. Then deactivate Note 2 and swap it to your existing line that has unlimited data. Then drop the new line down to a standard "dumbphone" package and keep a feature phone activated on it as a spare/emergency device. Basically you will be on the hook for keeping the new line active for 2 years at the cost of $10.00 per month + taxes and fees.
It is a roundabout way and in the long run you end up paying quite a bit. But for some people it is worth it to keep the unlimited data.

Your best bet is to go into a store. I have done this twice now to get new phones. I have 3 active lines, 2 of which have unlimited data. The 4th line is my ghost line. In December I'll be upgrading one if the unlimited data lines to get the note 2. That line never uses more than 500mb of data anyways. After that I will have revolving upgrades every 6 months.... I'll just keep putting the new device on my primary line

What I am going to do is use my upgrade (even though it will nuke my unlimited data) and then swap lines with my wife. She rarely uses more than 1 GB. So I can put her on the 2GB plan and then swap my phone over to her line which still has unlimited. I would like to swap the numbers as well but from everything I have read, VZW won't do it. Number change? yes. Swap? no.

You have to have a reason for an early upgrade especially one half a year away. I had returned 2 Galaxy Nexus for problems I was having in the past, and although I wasn't having problems with my current Galaxy Nexus, I used my satisfaction with that phone as leverage.
Have been a customer for 6 years and my bill is currently over 300.00 a month.
Maybe those facts help me? I don't know.

This gives me hope that I can call up Verizon sometime in December and get my upgrade moved up from the end of January
Edit: Gave Verizon a call. They were really nice, but I was told that just like the iPhone 5, I couldn't be upgraded early at the reduced amount for the Note 2. The lady I was talking to was really sweet though, and she said she was going to see if she could find out why the Note 2 has the same restrictions the iPhone 5 does.
Advice please?

My update isn't due until May of next year as well. I originally had the Bionic, and then I needed an insurance replacement and they gave me a bad Razr, so then I was sent another Razr. This "new" phone constantly shuts off and freezes and has issues. I truly want the Note 2. How long did it take you to get them to agree to moving your upgrade? Could you give me some specifics? Was it over the phone or in the store? Your help is greatly appreciated! I too would be losing my unlimited, but at this point I don't care.
P.s. Congrats on getting the Note 2!

I'm not sure why she said you couldn't early upgrade to the note 2. Not sure what your full circumstances are, try to get a level two CSR or higher as soon as possible without sounding ungrateful.

It was my first call and about 1 hour of total time before I got my upgrade. I called up and voiced my concerns with data connectivity and stated I wanted an early upgrade and went into the fact that I'm a long time customer with six years of on time payments and a fairly hefty monthly bill. She said she had to talk to someone else and came back and rejected my early upgrade. I asked if I could speak to someone else who could address my concerns without having to ask someone else. After a few minutes on hold, I was directed to someone who had a better grasp at customer service, not that the first lady was bad, but this guy was better. He basically heard me out and went ahead and granted my request. He went into some finer detail about not being able to early upgrade to any apple products, but that was the only restriction to his early upgrade powers.
My whole reason for calling was to get a Note 2, I just used the Galaxy Nexus as my entry point into the house of early upgrades.
might do this with my kids lines that come up in feb. they can live on 2gb a month, won't kill them.
So currently I have the GS3, and today I am eligible for an upgrade on one of my 5 lines, two of which my wife and I still have unlimited data (the line with the eligible upgrade is not unlimited) so I am wondering is there a way to upgrade that line and give my wife the GS3 and me get the Gn2 without me loosing unlimited?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2
you cannot get a phone at discounted price and keep unlimited data. You can buy one for full retail price and keep your data or get the discount and switch to tiered data plan. Or start a business account and you would still have access to unlimited data but it would cost around 150 bucks a month per line to have unlimited everything or at least i am pretty sure business customers sill have this option. If you end up seriously considering that i can call my business rep and ask him if you want just PM me.
If I upgraded the line with the upgrade available (which is already a limited data plan) and got the gn2 on that line and then preformed a hardware swap with my GS3 I would think I would get to keep unlimited or am I wrong here?

If that happens going to dump Verizon for Tmobile and paying full for the phone full price without contract makes it easier.
Sounds like I can keep Unlimited.
Sorry for the long post but here is what I got from the Verizon rep chat. I will keep the post updated to let you all know how it worked out.
Your RealTime session ID is 589747938.
You are now chatting with 'Elisabeth'
Elisabeth: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Ryan: Ya i have a question
Ryan: So today I am eligible for an upgrade on one of my 5 lines, two of which still have unlimited data (the line with the eligible upgrade is not unlimited) so I am wondering If I upgraded the line with the upgrade available (which is already a limited data plan) and got a new phone on that line and then, preformed a hardware swap with my current phone would I get to keep unlimited data?
Elisabeth: I will be happy to help you with your questions today!
Elisabeth: Yes you would be able to activate the phone to whatever number you want and not affect the unlimited data.
Elisabeth: Let's start that upgrade process today!
Elisabeth: What type of phone are you interested in today?
Ryan: The galaxy note 2
Elisabeth: That is an awesome phone!
Elisabeth: The order process is quick and easy online.
Elisabeth: And you can activate the phone yourself.
Ryan: I think im going to do it in store
Elisabeth: When you purchase the phone in store they activate it under the line that the upgrade is for.
Elisabeth: I recommend proceeding with the upgrade online today!
Ryan: Is it at all possible that i can order from you and do in store pickup?
Ryan: and still activate it on my own?
Elisabeth: I would have to see if in store pick is available where you live.
Elisabeth: What state do you live in?
Ryan: Arizona
Elisabeth: Let me check.
Elisabeth: What you can get today is free two day shipping when you order online because in store pick up is not available in your state.
Elisabeth: Would you like to proceed with the order.
Ryan: Im going to have to pass right now my wife broke her phone and she is freaking out without one on the weekend.
Elisabeth: I understand! I am the exact same way!
Elisabeth: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Ryan: No that should be it, thank you for your help i really appreciate it.
Elisabeth: Can I give you a suggestion?
Ryan: yes
Elisabeth: When you buy the phone in the store tell them it is for Christmas and you will activate it later. Then after you leave call customer care and activate the phone under the number you want.
Elisabeth: Do you want the number to customer care?
Ryan: yes please.
Elisabeth: Their number is 1-800-922-0204.
Elisabeth: You will be able to keep your unlimited data that way.
Ryan: Awesome. Thank you so much you are amazing Elisabeth.
Elisabeth: Your Welcome!
Elisabeth: Have a wonderful day!

You are correct. This is exactly what I did. I ordered mine online but had to exchange it in the store do to slight screen seperation below the home button. I even explained what I was doing at the store and they had no problem upgrading a regular line and switching it to my unlimited one.

I actually work in Best Buy Mobile. You can do what is called an alternate upgrade. You just take the upgrade from the available line and place the upgraded device on the desired phone number. I do them all the time for customers in the same situation as you.

Exactly. You are basically postponing the inevitable to a degree, but since those lines are already on a tiered plan, you have nothing to lose. As long as those other lines don't need new smartphones soon then you are good. Just keep in mind if you ever upgrade a line that had unlimited data then kiss your unlimited data goodbye.

I actually work in Best Buy Mobile. You can do what is called an alternate upgrade. You just take the upgrade from the available line and place the upgraded device on the desired phone number. I do them all the time for customers in the same situation as you.

From what I've been hearing it all depends on the rep you talk to. Maybe I will get lucky.

I have transferred 2 upgrades to my phone number and bought the iPhone 5(Which I sold and made about $800 on), and now the GNote, and have not lost the unlimited data even though it said I would both times.

To be honest is not a matter of getting lucky. The option for an alternate upgrade is built right into our activation system for Verizon. As long as you tell the associate what exactly you are wanting to do it well be fine. Just say you want to take the upgrade on line ending in 1234 and put the new hardware on line ending in 5678 without changing the plan. I can personally guarantee it will work no problem

It does change on your account as soon as the phone activates itself on boot after sim card swap
My line is available for upgrade in January and I did not want to lose my unlimited data. So I actually purchased the GN2 on my father's account which still had an NE2 also. Once the process was complete the guy deactivated my thunderbolt and activated the GN2 on my line. The rep also setup my SIM card for recycling so If I ever wanted to activate my TBolt again I could. If unlimited data goes away maybe I'll get a Asus PhonFab over the summer and sell the GN2
Thanks everyone for the advice. Finally got myself the titanium gray GN2 so far I'm loving it. And I just did the sim swap it worked out great.

So I smashed my Rezound screen and am going to move on to a different phone on Verizon. I was originally holding out on upgrading so I wouldn't lose my unlimited data, and could save some dough up before buying @ full cost. Anywhoo... I'm on a family plan and two members are on capped or tiered data and I'm hoping I can just transfer my upgrade to one of them and keep my unlimited on my plan. Does anyone know if this will work?

I'm fairly positive you can do that. What you'd do is upgrade their line, and then switch the phones back. I think that is fine to do as long as they all phones being switched are 4g phones.

Don't lose hope yet. I'm not completely positive, but I think it has something to do with going 3g to 4g and then back to 3g. Anyone wanna chime in who has done it?

Unfortunately, I believe the answer is "no." We have 4 phones on our account which was unlimited because my wife clings to an LG Touch that is a piece of crap which she hates, but she is also cheap (so who's complaining? but I digress). Meanwhile, my sons have iphones (which they paid for) and my daughter had an Incredible which was unusable, so we purchased an iPhone5 for her (don't ask). At the moment we updated her account, we had 2 choices, get charged $50 more/month for her phone, or migrate to a shared data plan (I chose 6g) which resulted in no real net change in the monthly bill.
To put it another way, once you upgrade ANY phone on the group account, it will be more expensive to retain unlimited data than to switch to a capped plan.
I don't think switching back and fourth from a 3g phone to a 4g phone, or vice versa, will change your plan. As long as you have a smart phone on your line with data, you'll be fine. Transferring upgrades isnt allowed though, I just tried transferring my upgrade to another line so I wouldn't lose my data, and they wouldn't let me. Verizon told me that in order to keep my unlimited, I would either have to buy a phone at full price (or a used one somewhere else); or wait till one of my other lines are eligible for an upgrade, use it, then transfer the phone over to my line.

Pick up a used phone to hold you over, you can switch that on your line and keep unlimited..

The upgrade is for another phone on my family plan... Hopefully I can switch that over and keep my unlimited. Verizon are just jerk faces.

Ok so we went to a Verizon premium seller and one of the works told us about this way of keeping unlimited data, I just wanted to see if this was possible or not. So she is on a family plan with 5 phones, So the worker told us that she could use one of the upgrades on the account. The worker then said that she can then switch phones with whoever she takes the upgrade from, ( going to use her dad's phone as it is a really old phone ) Then he goes back to his old phone and they cancel the data that they put on the line. Is that possible??
Yep.

I vzw customer retention upgraded my line. I have 4 lines. They activated the Note 2 on one of the other lines as transfer phone. Then they activate the Note 2 next on my line as a transfer phone. I still have unlimited data. They walked me through it over the phone when I ordered and activared both times.

I did this 3 times in the last 2 months. Our 5th line is a dumb phone. Only cost 10 bucks a month to never loss unlimited.

I have two smartphone lines with unlimited and two dumb lines with dumb phones on them for just this purpose. Just make sure they don't screw anything up if you have to do a warranty return or exchange. It's very easy for the rep to put you on the wrong line because the system gets a bit screwy when they work this magic.
I did a little searching and didn't see this method described yet, so I thought I'd post it to help somebody else.
My Details Pre-Upgrade:
2 Lines (1400 shared minutes)
2 Galaxy Nexuses
1 Unlimited Data plan (4-5Gb/mo used)
1 4Gb Data plan (2-3Gb/mo used)
My line was eligible for upgrade when I broke my GNEX. I went in to my local VZW retailer where one of the salesmen worked out this deal for me:
Add a dialtone line (with an additional 2-year contract) with a Samsung Galaxy S4 as the new phone.
Transfer that SGS4 to my Unlimited line.
Activate a broken VZW non-smartphone (provided by my salesman) on my new dialtone line.
Pro's:
Got to get a new SGS4 (subsidized) and put it on my Unlimited Data line
Got a spare dialtone line which uses my shared minutes which I can put a crappy phone on later if I chose to.
Actually cheaper than converting to shared data plan for the amount of data I needed (detailed below)
Con's:
I have only deferred the demise of my Unlimited Data plan.
I have to pay an additional $10/mo for the additional line.
Plan Differences:
Lose Unlimited and switch to 8Gb shared plan: $170/mo
Keep Unlimited and add an additional line: $160/mo :good:
Now, these numbers won't necessarily math out for others, but this is the way it worked out for me.
That's kind of what I did. But I already had the line and I still have a working phone on the upgrade line.

You could have used the upgrade on the 4gb line instead of opening a new line to save the $10 a month

I didn't know you could do that, and the VZW salesman didn't mention it.
If it is possible to do, he probably didn't mention it because he gets a bigger commission for a new line.

Yea, alternate upgrades can be done at anytime, and they do get more commission for a new line instead of an upgrade. On the plus side though, you still have your upgrade so you can always try and use it as an alternate upgrade for either of the other lines and get another phone subsidized down the road.

If you have an individual line... Head over to best buy Mobile website and upgrade.. They will have an option to keep existing data plan. However once you get the phone in mail and activate it.... Your unlimited data will drop... YOU MUST CALL RIGHT AWAY AND EXPLAIN YOU AGREED TO KEEP UNLIMITED DATA. print the contract and make screencaps

I'm on a 4 line family plan, two of those lines lost their unlimited a while ago. My intention is to go online, transfer the upgrade to one of the data capped lines. Once it arrives I will not call them to activate it on the upgraded line, but rather take it to a vzw store and tell them I want this phone activated on my unlimited line. I realize I can probably do that online, but I'm coming from a Bionic so I need the smaller sim anyway.
I don't want to go into the store initially because I have a feeling they'll try to activate it right there on the other line. The owner of that line doesn't need the hassle of having her phone de-activated, then re-activated when I move the S4 to my own line.

Be careful from what I understand you MUST activate the phone first on the non unlimited line. I believe the first line to activate a subsidized phone is agreeing to new terms. The owner of the other phone just needs to be there while you call twice. Once to activate "her new phone" then a second call to reactivate "her old phone" on her line. It can be done in 20 minutes and is not a hassle for her. Then you can activate the phone on your line at your liesure. I just did this a couple weeks ago with my brother who is not on my plan.

Hmm, that makes sense. Glad I mentioned it. Thanks Evil-Eye! I'm the main account holder, I wasn't even going to mention it to the other line holder just to avoid confusion. In the long run if I can do it over the phone I won't have to even go in and get a new SIM since that sim should be movable once initially activated.

Actually, she's already got LTE service and a sim, she has an S3. Can't I just pop her current sim into the S4, let it activate, them move it back to the S3?

Exactly what I did with the sim. The sim is tied to the account I think. This was my scenario: I was on a 3g phone my brother had an S3. I bought an S4 from his upgrade. He moved his S3 sim into the S4 he then activated the S4. Then he called and moved back to his S3. We got an unopened SIM with the S4 which we used on my account which never had a SIM before. So long story short yes use her Sim temporarily in the new phone and since you don't have a sim claim the new one ss yours. With that you will have unlimited data.

There's a nearly 500 post long thread on this topic already.
When phone is activated in store you loose unltd. You need to call within two weeks to stay on unlimited. I activated once I got from. CL at the store when I was waiting for a replacement. And they prorated me 14 gigs for $$ 450 $$ !!!! This was swiftly corrected my calling in at *611 .. I will pay the 6-700 to keep my unlimited 69 mB/s speeds. Being on tour with the circus if is my only source of interwebbs....

nobody try this you loose ur unlimited, indirect retailers can add terms and conditions of there own but they cannot modify or supersede Verizons, theyll tell you to go back to best buy and complain to there about it.
and ever if you get lucky and talk a rep or even supervisor in to going along with it verizon adits there accounts for features, promos, and discounts that shouldnt be there so more likely then not youll lost it once theres not any options any more
