Hi all.
how do i go from bmm to safestrap if i have deleted my stock motorola rom on system1 on bmm and flashed a custom rom there?
how do i make sure it boots up?
i am asking this because the last time i tried it , it went horribly wrong.
i had jellywiz on system1 bmm and the verizon leak kernel i think (therefore had erased cid). i uninstalled bmm and installed the safestrap app.
when it rebooted, after the safestrap splash screen it was stuck on a black screen for a lot of time. i panicked and force rebooted and then tried erasing the stock slot and and flashed another leak based rom but it gave an error that there was no OS installed i tried several times but the same thing happened. then i flashed a kexec rom on another slot and that booted up. did the erased cid have anything to do with it?
eventually i had to RSD LITE my way back to ICS.
I dont want to take that risk again if I ever try switching to safestrap.
Bump. Please see and help

I think you should only use one, whether SS or BMM.
Why you have to use both of them? Because, use one of them should do the work that you need.

i never said i want both of them! BMM is brilliant but testing multiple kexec roms on it is a pain as only sys 1 works properly for kexec roms.
i asked if i wanted to switch from bmm to SS what would be the best way to do it.
If u dont know the answer do not reply. please

heh!? I only wanna know why you doing that all, just use one.
btw, the best way to do it is you uninstall first the existing recovery boot, then you can install the next one.
for example, if BMM recovery boot already installed, you uninstall it first from the app, then next install the SS recovery boot from Safestrap app.
I hope that answer your question. and please.... don't get cranky so fast!

well if u read what i wrote on the first post above u would find out that i did exactly the same thing and my custom rom on the sys 1 on bmm did not boot up on the stock slot of SS. and after that only kexec roms worked on other slots

of course it won't work, because it installed on different recovery boot. if you installed ROM via BMM, it will not work in SS, because, I think, each use different type of recovery boot.
just like what I said before, you should just use one... and stick.

Okay so awhile back I rooted my XT912 and had safestrap 3.11 installed. I do not recall if I had clockwork mod or not.I had Eclipse ICS installed and was happy with it. At one point I was once again meddling where I shouldn't and wiped my stock rom slot via safestrap. I just booted into the Eclipse on rom slot 1 and forgot about it. I decided to try a cyanogen rom and had it downloaded to my external sd. I went into safestrap and began deleting rom slot 1. Everything was fine until, MY BATTERY DIED... After some more work I had eventually ended up being able to use recovery and flash the internal drive so I could use RSD to boot into a stock bootloader. I keep getting errors there. I do have a backup on my computer. I just really don't know where to go from here as I cant even access safestrap anymore. Please help. I have no idea where to go from here and couldn't find anyone with the same issue and believe me I have spent the better part of two days looking.
Wow. Droidrzr. Com they have excellent support for xt 912 and live chat as well. Good. Luck

If you can get into the bootloader, you should be able to fast boot back to the stock ROM. Did you have the OTA JB update on your phone?

I tried searching for this, but couldn't find anything.
Timeline:
Rooted, and installed safestrap via razr blade utility... perfect
installed cm 10.1 & gapps on boot sector #1 as instructed.... perfect
tested phone, everything is working great...
Performed a factory reset via android settings menu (phone belongs to a co-worker). on reboot phone is just black.
paid closer attention, and realized that after safestrap timed out, phone wasn't booting to anything.
Now I have no OS installed, and when I try to partition slot 1 to reinstall, I get an error that it is "unable to partition"
Is there anything I can do short of a SBF, and starting over from scratch?

Seems to be a big gap between your first & second statements. Can you be more specific about why you did an FDR if everything was running right?
And where did you do it from, the stock, unsafe side or from the ROM in slot 1?
Sounds like you accidentally formatted internal storage where your ROM slots live, in which case, the least you'll have to do is to boot back to your stock side, uninstall recovery from the safestrap app & uninstall the app itself. Then use a file explorer to remove anything that says safestrap or twrp from your internal storage & reboot. Once it comes up, reinstall the safestrap 3.11 apk & install the recovery again & start over.
Your worst case, if you can't boot up into your stock ROM at all, is to use Matt's 1.82 utility to restore your stock image.

Did you make a backup of the stock system? Does the safestrap revovery screen still come up on reboot? Have you tried to delete slot 1 and re-create it? Or do the three wipes on slot1 (data/dalvik/cache) and re-install the ROM? Have you tried to hit the menu button (left side) and go back in to safestrap and enable the stock system? If the stock system will come back up you can go in and disable the recovery and remove safestrap and try to re-install it. If not I am afraid you will probably have to fastboot back to stock.

I did a factory reset, because the phone is not mine... I checked that everything was working and then reset so he'd start off the the setup wizard.
I think gary is right, I made a backup, which is gone, and I can't partition any of the rom slots? how did a fdr format everything except safe strap... is there no way to fix it without running the unbrick utiity and starting from scratch?

An FDR should not have removed your stock ROM, just the user data. Shouldn't touch the system partition at all. Can you boot into the stock side? If you can't, your only option is to use the 1.82 utility to start fresh with the stock .16 image. Can you boot up the stock ROM?

Cant you just take stock based zips for safestrap and flash it
So I wasn't thinking when I first got my s4 and figured the update was just something small but now that I look on here it looks like that update was definitely something big... What does this mean for me? Can I not run custom roms or kernels now?
That is correct. Currently you can root but you cannot install a custom recovery. Without a custom recovery you cannot install different roms or kernels. You cannot odin back to MDK. Hashcode is fine tuning a workaround using Safestrap, but it is not available yet. You can follow his progress here

custom recovery replaces your normal recovery, allowing you to overwrite the whole system when flashing a rom
safestrap keeps the stock software, and boots a recovery on top of it, keeping the stock software while kind-of dual booting your own ROM.
Or at least i think this is how it works in a layman's term.

You should wipe and recrate the stock slot and make one of the other slots in stock slot.

if you fully wipe the stock slot and then reflash one of the roms from like slot 1 on stock slot you would have more space.

You CANNOT delete stock slot.
You can only wipe it.
If you need to free space, delete one of the other slots, or as above post says, move one of your Rom to stock slot and then delete that one.

No, the safestrap that you are talking about is the safestrap.apk. You use that to install/uninstall the hijack that safestrap uses to boot into recovery. Since you have root rights, you gave safestrap the OK to install a bootloader hijack, which operates before the OS(ROM) is loaded up. If you wiped stock slot, then rebooted the phone with out installing a ROM, the hijack would still be there, you would still be able to boot into recovery, you just wouldn't be able to go any farther than recovery. You would just get a black screen afterwards because, well, there wouldn't be a ROM for it to boot too.
If you wipe the stock slot, then install the ROM and Gapps that you want back onto that slot, everything would be fine.
Also from what I understand you CANNOT restore a backup from another slot to stock slot. You will have to do it fresh.
Hope this helped
Thanks a lot for ur nice guide.. Will give a try... Which rom is best suitable for flashing in stock slot.. Only real benefits of putting a ROM in stock slot is saving space on your internal sd card. There are other, little conveniences but that is the main one
I don't know what you mean about installing the recovery without the stock ROM. Safestrap is a root required.apk(application) that installs a hijack for a custom recovery. Once installed it stays there like I said in the previous post, til it is uninstalled or upgraded, or you flash a fresh firmware with a utility.
You don't want to upgrade it without having a ROM installed prior. The new safestrap .apk gives you the option of uninstalling the old 3.65 hijack then installing the new 3.72, it won't install over the old, you have to remove it first. You have to do this in the application, not in recovery, so that means a ROM will already have to be installed.
Right now you should just concentrate on flashing a ROM in stock slot if that is what you want, worry about the recovery update later, as it isn't a requirement. Maybe do some reading first so you have a better understanding of what you are doing before you do it. And figure out how to get yourself out of a problem before you get into it.
As for ROM's, all of them work with safestrap. All of them have their own individual kinks, bugs, and fixes. You would have to read through the individual ROM's forums see which ones you want to try out. I like SlimKat myself, and there are also custom JB ROM's. Since you are using a xt912 you will want spyder versions of ROM's not umts-spyder, that is for xt910
Thanksbfor the fruitful info

If you are only going to have one slot has to be stock. If you read hashcode's information on that you would have known. Since you are getting the Motorola logo, your bootloader is still there. You are a repairable softbrick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192467
This is matlgrofs utility for the xt912.. make sure to thank him. Follow the direction's EXACTLY!
It will flash a fresh firmware on your phone. And allow you to root it. The safestrap .Apk is a 2.xx Version so your backups wont work with it. So after you flashed the firmware and rooted, you can install the newer safestrap Apk.
Battery life is pretty important with this process, so the phone needs to be 100 (the phone doesn't charge in AP) you cannot cut this corner, if your battery goes dead in the middle of the firmware flash your phone very well will become a brick

thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out on my own. I already had that utility because I used it to root. I just didn't realise I could use it to recover the phone from a soft brick. I also didn't know what the button combo was but I did some reading this morning and thanks to the helpful post of others in various threads I sorted everything out. So everything is running good now and I'm using liquid smooth kitkat with ART enabled and tethering works so I'm happy. This is my first experience with a motorola device and so far it's been the easiest to get rooted and a custom recovery installed, but that whole rom slot thing through me off. thought since I had a rom installed already I could just wipe the stock rom but learned it doesnt work like that...so now I know. Thanks again for the reply though, your info is spot on
This is intriguing to think about, so can safestrap be uninstalled / installed from any working rom slot with any working custom rom?
I can see why this would be helpful, especially to save internal space. Is there a good minimalistic custom rom with enhanced utilities that could be installed in the stock slot for maintenance purposes? Or should I just backup my stock rom and put my favorite rom in the stock slot and just use it for advanced maintenance?
I do think though the first option might be smarter since it's good to have a maintenance stock rom that won't be modified through regular use to be able to boot into for specific tasks.
Any recommendations for stock slot replacement? you did mention slimkat, but are there any ultra basic yet utility heavy custom roms out there for spyder? (I'm using XT912)
Also do I need to do any other specific backup of my stock rom? other than the full back up in safestrap?
Just like the title says. I am unable to flash anything to the stock slot on SS. I have tried ,any different times. I have tried wiping the slot and then flashing a fresh version of the ROM I use and also wiping and restoring a previous backup. Everytime when I go to boot the phone it gets stuck on a black screen during boot up. I end up having to use Matts tool and reinstall things back to stock including having to reroot. Anyways I would love to use my stock slot. Any help would be great. thank you

Did you use advanced wipe and select everything except Internal Storage and Micro SDCard?
The stock ROM system partition is only 636mb; is the ROM and GApps package you're using small enough to fit there?

Yes I did use the advanced wipe and wiped all but internal/external SD cards. On the partition thing I'm not sure. Never looked at file size but I'm flashing LS with minimal gapps...others claim to have it on stock slot also.
So after I flash the stock slot on boot it gives me red moto logo. Then black screen. But its not 100% black. I can see some backlight is on cause I can see the splotches in the screen. If I press buttons like volume up the phone with vibrate a few times. Not sure what its doing but I end up having to reinstall system from scratch to fix it. I was hoping for an easy fix

Once I also had problems to flash with SafeStrap on stock slot. Then I had the idea to flash the custom ROM first on slot 1 (or 2, how you want). Then making a complete backup of that partition, and after restore it on stock slot. - That worked fine for me.

Wich safestrap Version? Uninstall recovery from safestrap, then safestrap, then install newest version, maybe this helps, but don't reboot without safestrap!

I am (and was) using SafeStrap v3.73 when I flashed to the stock slot, I know some previous versions were supposed to be able to do this but I never tried it before. Maybe you're already using that latest version but if not, it wouldn't hurt to try.

yes I am using the latest version of Safestrap. Any suggestions? I will try to redo it again this weekend when I have more time. Thank you

this might help..dont know if you would want to do this or not..i had a note 2 from verison with locked bootloader had to use safestrape ...with that phone the the devs left the recovery incomplete moved onto newer phones so i read..anyways only the stock slot was working in this recovery ..so we had to use stock slot only and the directions read ..flash over stock rom wipe everything except system..and could only use a custom rom with same kernal....example- i had stock jelly bean stock rom think it was 4.2.1 version..so i flashed alliance rom 4.2.1 version..and like i said before wiped everything except internal storage and system....and it worked perfect....dont know if this would work or not...but you said anymore ideas..so why not try....was just thinking..because the bootloader is locked ..shouldnt be able to flash custom rom on stock slot right?shouldnt be able to modify system slot..thats why with the note 2 diddnt wipe system and dirty flashed ,useing the same kernal...................................lol..just relized these posts are from years ago..feel dume now..and i thought i was helping someone..lol

ok..update..i just flashed eclipse custom rom on stock slot..wiped everything except internal storage and external on my xt912 droid razor useing latest 2.7 S.S recovery..and it worked..not only that but i was only on 4.1.2 jelly bean as base firmware..the eclipse ro was 4.2...not much a diff..but thought it mite cause problems being on stock slot and locked bootloader..lol..im for real shocked this really worked..my problem is with space..id rather jus use stock slot with custom rom..and thats it because i dont have enough space..for some reason i can only store stuff on external storage and dont have write access to ex..sd card ..thought this was only a problem for kitkat and jellybean it wasnt??..looked for a jellybean xposed sd card fix ..of course no luck cause its not pose to be a problem..any thoughts bout this?...edit yet again..sorry..when flashed eclipse rom..the ex sd card is not a problem no more....gues the rom fixed this problem..thanx xda
