I recently had 3 note 2's...im selling 2 of them and buying an S4. If I don't like it ill just go back to my Note 2 and trade/sell the S4 for Note 3 when it comes out, which is going to be a beast.....

you can't really say it's a step backwards when the s4 specs crushes the note 2. the only thing you give up is the pen and 5.5 screen

How does it crush or phone exactly? Cause is clocked higher? We could overclock ours... its useless though and we still get superior battery life

Well, I definitely wouldn't call the s4 an upgrade over the note II. For those coming from phones prior to the note II I'd call it an upgrade. On paper the s4 is the better phone, but in the real world, most people won't even notice any difference. The screen size, s pen and battery life is really what will ultimately separate the note II and s4. For those who want a phone that's not so big, then the s4 would be the obvious choice. Aside from that I don't see why anybody would trade in their note II for a s4 if they can deal with the size of the note II because the s4 doesn't offer any real world usage advantages over the note II. The s4 has a few new gimmicks, but most people probably won't use most of those features just like they don't use them on the note II.

It's not just overclocked. The guts (Processor/GPU) are all upgraded and newer models. Also, the screen is about the best out in the biz, next to the One.
You lose a bit of battery, screen size and a pen that 87% of us haven't used since the first week we got the phone. Add on to that a phone instead of a slab.
Don't get me wrong (I love my N2 and will probably stay) but the S4 is no joke. It's not just a minor upgrade. It's a spec monster that would eat this phone alive in some benchmarks. Believe that.

I dont bench race phones so bench marks mean very little. Second imo the s4 is a step backwards for battery life and screen size. Both devices are more capable of handling androids latest firmware for years to come...everything extra the s4 has is mostly marketing bull**** that the enduser will never notice a difference. The s4 supposedly has a better screen and camera...well how much better is completely subjective because the n2 is damn good.

The bootloader has been confirmed to be unlocked already, has been since the release of the ATT verison. Dan is just waiting on Verizon S4 to drop before releasing booooooooommmmmm!!!!! Here we go!!!!!
Well the screen on the s4 is smaller, and has higher resolution but that takes more processing power... . Now Idk what I'm talking about but will it really seem that much faster?
I experience no lags on my note 2 anyway
But hey don't listen to me I'm a note 2 obsessed geek.

Note 2 is a good upgrade if you are not looking for faster hardware, but more specialised features like the s-pen.
If you don't need the features this second, I would advise you to stay with your SGS3 'til the Note III comes out in August/September(or just go with the SGS4/other similarly specced phone once it becomes available).
The note 2 is a good upgrade because of the 2 gig of ram thats why everything is faster..alot of people forget we have only 1 gig
Nope, wait for s4 much better since less then half year to go

Are you planning on being without a phone until the SGS4 gets here in April/May? The S4 is better if you want a smaller device, best dev support, and don't need the s-pen. This is all pure speculation though as neither of these devices have been announced.

I believe ergonomics make all the difference between two devices. If you frequent a tablet for daily use, than Note series offer a good fusion of a smartphone and a portable tablet. Otherwise, Galaxy series should be preferable. As such, S4 would be the best upgrade.

The note 2 really isn't an upgrade as it's the body of a SGS3 in larger form. With S-Pen. S4 would be an upgrade or Xperia Z

The short answer to that is it is actually a good upgrade.
But, if you're asking if it is a WISE upgrade, then no. Because we're seeing 1080p screen phones with 2gb of ram and A15 architecture cropping up everywhere, so the note 2 may be better than the s3, but there are others in the market of the same price with better specs. HTC butterfly for example.
I dont like anyone should possibly switch from s3 to note 2.. How i see it it is a 2gb of ram, larger screen,s-pen s3..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
IMO is not a good upgrade since is almos the same sh*t but if you want a bigger screen at same resolution (less DPI) and s-pen stuff then yes itsa good option, but is not an upgrade, is just a different phone with almost same hardware.
Usually I call upgrade to get a better phone, not just a different looking phone.
Hey XDA I have a note and my mother is willing to trade me for her S3. Would you consider it an upgrade? I would miss the spen but I really think the big phone is not for me. It a hassle to Carry around especially with the extended battery. Could someone give me some advice on if its worth it. Thanks in advance.

I have both and the s3 is better, I won't lie.
Much smoother, the cpu/gpu is a big upgrade.
I would do it. I go back and forth between the two, but imo the s3 is the superior of the two.
Now the note 2 on the other hand....

If we're to believe Samsung Display, the display arm of Samsung, which is actually a desperate company, there might not be a Note 3 as we know it. They're replacing both the Note 2 display, as well as the S3 display with a 1920x1080 4.99 inch panel this year. This according to Anandtech. I suppose we could see a curved OLED touting Note, but then again, flexible OLED yield isn't supposed to be good enough for production runs til 2014.
Unless they're keeping the display a secret, this is what most would expect. This doesn't mean that they'll have some other type of offering or combination to allow SPen functionality on say....the S4, but I wouldn't personally design a new chassis around an S4 and call it a Note.
I'd definitely choose the S3 at this point. The Development support will last significantly longer than it will for this device. Isn't it the most popular Android device ever? That is to say, more users often means more ROMs, the pressure to update and develop for it will be higher.
Since were not talking about an upgrade, its a no brainer.
But if you had to use an upgrade, or pay more than say....50-100 bucks (personal figure) I definitely wouldn't do it. A new generation of SoCs is just around the corner. Just as well, the GPU is much more powerful on the S3, but app support and UI/general performance isn't too much better now that we have 4.2 AOSP. And while an official JB is probably a couple months out, but it will bring most Note2 features home for us.
That's the current sitrep for both devices.

Personally I love my note and it's plenty fast with the stable roms out there. My gf has a S3 and it's a nice device and I can really see the appeal but it really depends on WHAT you plan on doing with it. I remote into computers and my home network. Work on servers all from my phone so moving to a smaller screen isn't what I'd do. It has the horsepower to show up plenty of phones and though it's a gen old with older hardware, I kept my 86 toyota camry longer than I've had this phone and THAT was a piece of crap.
But again it's all about needs and wants. If you feel that you need the faster phone and are willing to loose the screen size, I say go for it.

Note 2 has bigger and brighter screen, and longer lasting battery than S3. Other than that, they are very similar.
DNA doesn't have a removable battery or allow you to add more storage. You're pretty much stuck with 16gig, which is what the Note 2 comes standard with, but the Note 2 allows you to expand up to an additional 64 gigs.
This topic HAS been beaten to death...but the Note 2 still wins

Don't forget the s-pen! That's the main reason I went with the note (along with screen second and battery third; and wanting to leave iOS - unrankable).
You might also wait until march to see what the S4 will offer. If you dont want to wait, most people a very very happy with their Note 2. I especially love the Note 2's battery life.
Whatever your choice is, good luck. And please search before you post. There are several people that dont mind helping, but it can be frustrating to help those who dont help themselves.

The SGS4 is likely 6-8 months off at this point. Their last release was in the summer, and every release before that was in the summer in the US (late spring internationally). If you want a phone now, I'd say get the Note 2, if you can wait, this coming summer/fall looks like it will be amazing

The international release has been 3-4 months before US Carrier release so far, so the earliest you'd see it is June/July in the US on VZW.

Lol I remember selling that phone when I worked for Vzw. It was great at the time but now...well you already know. I got my note2 on Xmas eve and I can't think of any other device I would own at this point. The spen opens up so many options. I find myself officially spoiled after owning this. No other phone on Verizon in my opinion can rival the Note2 unless you can't deal with the size.
Even Verizon and lg said the phone sucked. That's why the released the spectrum so quick

I wasnt saying the phone will be out in march. I said wait until march to see what it will have to offer. I was referring to it being announced in march. Either ar MWC or its own event.
Just to be clear: I agree the S4 will more than likely not be available for purchase until July in the US.
On a side note: my gf cousin works for a company that plans big events for corporations. They have been working on something big for Samsung. He was in town for christmas and was pretty much on the phone (ironically an iPhone) the whole time having teleconferences with Korea. My guess is the S4 but they dont get told the actual product until a couple of weeks out.

I think the Note 2 is the best phone out right now. All phones have compromises. S3 only has 1gb of RAM, DNA doesn't have expandable storage and battery life is so/so.
I've only had the note 2 a few days, but I've been a little disappointed with battery life. I'm coming from a Rezound with extended battery (2750mah). The battery life is similar to that and the Rezound got bashed for poor battery life. I was expecting a little more. Guessing it might get better after a few charge cycles. I find myself having to charge about an hour a night. The good thing is that it is a 2amp charger so it charges fast.

The S3 and the Note 2 should never ever be compared. They are totally different devices in almost every way possible. Not bashing you kintwofan, or anyone in particular, just saying these 2 devices should not even be in the same sentence.
It's more like DNA vs S3/4, or do I want a mini tablet with a Wacom pen.
Personally at this point I recommend you wait another month for the S4 reveal and see if that floats your boat OP. I would never recommend an S3 to someone, it's 2013. Especially not a US variant S3 which has horrible specs compared to most devices released in the last 6 months. So you want someone who owns a Note 2's opinion OP? Wait a month.

The S3 is stock / rooted and the Note 2 is stock / unrooted which may have something to do w/ it. It seems there's more to do with the S3 as far as the Dev community, it's not too big and I have never had any issues with it. I've had the Note 2 for about 4 weeks now and sometimes it won't send a text message until I restart the phone.
Thought I would ask those who have the Note II what you guys think of the SIV. I am a tech junkie and always move on to something else. (My only regret was the Droid DNA.) I actually like my Note II a lot and really don't know if I want the SVI or not (or HTC One). So what do you guys think?
Think we will get a lot of the stuff on the note 2

Samsung says that all their flagship devices, including the GS3 will get the software improvements, anything not related to hardware, like ir.
I don't want to downgrade screen sizes so Note 3 is when I'm making my move. That S4 Snapdragon CPU is ridiculously fast though and makes me jealous that I only have an Exynos 4 (which is still fast).
Edit: I hate to be critical but I'm just pointing out the Roman numeral for '4' is 'IV'. Sorta bugged me that you were calling it a Galaxy S6 haha

**** yeah! Galaxy S6!
I think it's cool, but no exynos for America. That's a bummer. I don't really want a snapdragon chip in a phone I use, unless the next Google phone is that. Plus the note has a good chip and is unlockable. Along with a lot of aosp support. So far th is year nothing tickles my pickle like the note 2 has.

May I ask why you dislike the Snapdragon? I've heard the US version will be slightly faster than the Exynos 5 chip. On top of that, Snapdragon CPUs can be over clocked to oblivion lol

Note 3 or bust! :good:
Processor is irrelevant to me. The note 2 has never lagged for me nor have I seen any even remote hang ups. S4 looks pretty nice but for me to upgrade from the note 2 it will take more than the s4.

Just give me the damn software for it and I'm good.

I'm sure it will, I just hope it doesn't take awhile. I think we'll be close to the Note 3 release before we see these features though, but I hope I'm wrong. Maybe the features will be easy to port (from 4.2.2 to 4.1.1) and we'll see these features in roms shortly after the S4 release

Agreed. This will be the first time I've stayed put. Anyone who knows me knows I flip phones like people change their oil. This time? Yeah, I like the looks and stuff, but I think my N2 can keep up.
This will all change when I hold one once lol

You guys are right. The phone shows no sign of lag on stock kernel with Project Butter Jelly Bean. Guess the updated processors on these upcoming devices are just an added speed bonus.
Edit: although I'm anxious to see how the S4's battery life is on the newer processors and 2600 mah battery.

I've found that the exynos stays a lot cooler during extended use, then compared to my brothers DNA.
Ive noticed my note 2 being a lot cooler than my last 2 htcs with snap dragons

I feel like at this point improvement in the processor world needs to be battery life, however even that is still minor. I just don't see how a processor even twice as powerful could have any real world benefit.

I just want the update with the new features that don't require the new sensors. I'm pretty happy with my Note.

I have the s4 and to be honest I like the note 2 better. the only thing I truly love is the camera features on the s4. is it possible to get the s4 camera on the note 2?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've followed similar threads. The Galaxy S4 comes with 4.2.2 while the Note only has 4.1.2. The Camera function requires TW and Android 4.2.2.

You're correct. It may be possible to port by a great dev, but for right now it's a no go.

See I told ya the S4 was not a upgrade over the N2...most of the new features are marketing gimmicks. Heck the Spen is more useful than watch on lmao. I agree tho the S4 camera is sweet...
I don't think you guys want the delay that accompanies the S4 camera, it sucks :/
Also though, every one of the new modes is listed as a separate application in Titanium Backup.

I played with the phone at Verizon last night.. Camera was quick.. No delays.. I snapped 10 or more pics in a row.. I agree one of the better features on the phone..

There have been lots of reports of camera lag, with me in full auto mode when I press the shutter it takes 0.5-1 second to actually take.
Wow.. That's not good... I'm going to hit a few places today for more testing... I'm staying put with the N2 but I always like to test the new phones..

Same here, I can try out the S4 for 2 weeks and if I don't love it, just pay a $35 restocking fee.
Yup.. I always tell everyone where else can you rent a new phone for $2.5 a day.. Of course you have some money tied up but not too bad..

I have been using both phones for the last 24hrs, the s4 is super fast, sweet screen, an amazing camera. But still returning it lol

I went from a GNexus to GS3 to GN2 to GS4 to GN2 all in one month. By far, GN2 is the winner for me. I will absolutely agree with everyone here that the S4 camera is a sexy a** b*tch. I didn't experience any of the shutter lags previous posts mention. My experience was 0 lag with crisp and clean pictures.
When I ran the GS3, GS4, and GN2 side by side playing the same pron video, i will say it was obvious that the S4 had a better display in all aspects. Also, after letting it run for an hour on full brightness, the GN2 battery life is definitely better of course it has the bigger battery.
I am on that boat waiting for the GN3 to come sailing my way
