New to Android - Tips? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
So I just bought my first smartphone ever and it's samsung galaxy s2 4G from Virgin Mobile. This is also my first experience with Android. So I am just looking for tips from experienced users to get the most out of it.

Tips... What do you want to know? Because this question isn't very specific at all and can't be answered...

Search/read/learn (the first two don't necessarily have to be done in that order). Asking people to regurgitate ten steps on how to do a specific thing will teach you nothing & won't be any help to you if/when the SHTF.
If you read/learn/understand 'why' for yourself & how things work, you're more likely to be able to handle anything that comes up.

If you do what I suggested you'll learn what you can do with a smartphone.

You can do almost everything you could with a computer, and a bunch of stuff your computer could never do.
The play store has apps for whatever you want to do. Poke around in there and see.
This place is for Modding your phone's firmware and changing it's look/feel/functionality. So it may be a little much.
If you're looking for basics this would be the last place to look. People will mock you. Nyah!

Good u got a smartphone!!!
If this is really ur 1st smartphone ever??
Then take things a bit slow.learn the basics of the software. Explore the app store. Surf ur way thru settings and options and see what each one does.start rummaging thru ur smart phone...
If u don't get a specific feature or cant understand something? Then use Google? Watch YouTube videos of how it works and happens.... Even then u can't understand, that's the point when u start posting ur Q/A threads in XDA..
And u asked what u can do with a Android device? Well let me tell u can do similarly the exact things you can do with a PC... Slowly you will understand the usefulness & the power of a smartphone.
This is my suggestion. I hope u consider doing those things..

Request Photo Editor.apk

For some reason I don't have this on my current ROM. Can someone hook me up? I don't have the option to edit images within the gallery.apk so I'm assuming is because this is missing...

well for starters you might want to tell people what rom your on and which apk you talking about there are alot of photo editors
Its the stock photo editor. While in Gallery you can edit the photo with the s pen...
I'm on the objective ROM, but that shouldn't make any difference in this instance.

What you might be looking for is PhotoRetouching.apk. And it should be in system/app
For future reference it does matter what ROM. You should be able to pull it yourself from another ROM like flappjaxxx's base or the OnlyOne.

I know it matters what ROM I'm using, that's why I said for this instance it doesn't matter. I have that app installed but still no editing like before...even reinstalled it. No difference...

True.. this site has went down a bit as far as friendliness and people being helpful.. Everybody wants to pretend they know it all and bash people for asking questions.. This site was totally different when I got my Droid X July 2009 or 2010...

Easy enough, use the S-Pen to dig your way out, or pick the lock with it! Why they let you have your Note in jail is a better question.

To the OP - you need to do massive research before you do anything else to your Note - if indeed you actually are trying to learn anything.

Easiest way to perm root?

What does everyone feel is the easiest method to perm root the HTC Amaze? It's currently running 4.0.3 if it matters.

If you looked, pretty much the only way to achieve perm root is either by using hasoon's tool, or by installing a custom ROM

I wish someone would make a thread, some sort of resource that has all info you'd ever need.. I wish they would do this, and sticky this thread- maybe even call it a bible.. like an amaze bible. The one place to go to get everything you need.
Seriously tho, I'm pretty sure we covered root in the bible, which happens to be linked in my signature, and stickied somewhere.. we pretty much took search out of the equation- if you find something that isn't in the bible, attach a comment in the doc or thread with the link and what it is for..
Oh, and not sure what device you are coming from, but we don't have opinions on things for the amaze. We have answers. If you saw somewhere where we left a question(like what is the best root) please let us know..
thanks man for the bible link!

Even a pro would be hard pressed to find a lot of answers with the search button.. which is why it was worth the effort of me and a few others to try to put as many answers in one place as possible.
And the sII is comparable to our phone, but I'm slightly jealous of the SIII. The only phone I would consider a big enough upgrade would be the SIII international version.. but with all the phones on the horizon I think I can wait a bit longer.
Welcome to the amaze, most of us are pretty friendly/helpful, but all of us have our bad days- or just days where people ask the same question for a billionth time, lol.

[Q] where to start ?

Hi i think my S2 is falling behind in updates so i consider installing a custom rom, i just dont know where to start ?
Can anybody help me ?
What do i need to know ?
Wich rom to choose ?
There is no "best rom" so try to google or look at forums to see the one that suit you the most.
If you need light one then try Slim Bean or if u need a lot of options go for CM10.
There is a lot roms so you need to find the one u like the most. Most of them are great, its just what u like/need.
Try reading this thread before starting and make sure you are confident in what you are doing.

You should probably buy a usb jig, find out where your nearest j-tag center is(for future reference), and a mb is about £100 if your out of warranty.

There is just so much to read, maybe i didnt have to read it all
Almost every person who has busted their phone to one extent or another on here lately (and there has been quite a few) did so because they thought 'There is just so much to read, maybe i didnt have to read it all'.
The likelihood of you borking your phone increases exponentially depending on how little you read/learn/understand. Take your time, don't do anything to your phone unless you understand exactly what you're trying to do to it.

Thats right, you dont need to read it all.Because of the popularity of the phone, loads of threads have 1000s of posts-so for now just read the first few of the ones you need.
And in this forum, you find almost everything covered each week and it just like a bootloop the following week (same crap different people).
So read a few guides about odin/cwm/roms/kernel/efs/nand backup/brickbug/bootloop etc.
And look through the problems here.Youll find the solutions posted which will increase your knowlege.
Some people know so much about brick bug....they became experts by having their devices bricked because of that bug.

I been using odin for 6 years I know what im doing
But you don't know how to search for things or even how to ask for things nicely.

Bro, are you really that stupid or you just pretend to be so?
Sammobile has all the official firmwares for each samsung phone. That is 100% guaranteed.
So, please be mature enough and search before posting. XDA is not a place where you order people impolitely since you do not "own" any of these people who are here.
XDA users/developers are doing the work 100% voluntarily and it is not nice to be rude to them.
Don't be spoonfed, search, search, search and if you think you have searched enough, search again.
Your 6 years of "experience" should be enough to know where to find official firmware.
Peace.

@SmallFri98 So here's the thing since you're not very experienced on this site, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First there's an old saying that it's better to use sugar than vinegar. Secondly you should take a peak at the Rules on XDA and become familiar with them. Rule 1. Search before posting and also rule 2.3 flaming/lack of respect. Even after you were given the link you kinda got a bit sassy with people which is not a good practice and I can assure you that you will not get very far or get much support that way. This site can be fantastic and very helpful but if you're just going to get abrasive with people that are helping you then you will not enjoy your time on here. Anyway since the answer to your question has been given this thread no longer serves a purpose.
Thread closed.
Thank you,
-Negan
