So call me a fool, but I've never made a nandriod when flashing roms and such, but want to do that now, but lets say I back up with one rom, then flash another rom, is there a way to only restore apps, contacts, etc with out any system files, or no? Thanks!

Hi, my gs2 is rooted with CF-Root, this is the FIRST time i have done all this as im new to Android. Last night i did a nandroid backup and a titanium backup, factory/cache wipe etc before i then flashed villainrom 2.4.2 for the first time with success and now my phone is obviously like it was out of the box but on villainrom, so all my apps, contacts etc have gone.
I have a few questions:
Whats the best way to restore everything and get my contacts and apps etc back? do i have to recover with nandroid or titanium?
whats the difference between these 2 backups i made, nan/titan?
also does recovering any of these backups affect the custom rom i just flashed? ideally i would like to know for when im flashing custom roms in the future, which is the best way to back things up then recover them after i have flashed a custom rom?
One last thing is can i still use samsung kies to backup/sync things like contacts/photos with a rooted gs2 running villainrom?
Sorry for these noob questions, any help is really appreciated! THX!

A nand backup = backup your current setup, like an image (including ROM)
Titanum = backup apps +/ data
Now that you flashed a new rom, you should restore with Titanium your apps.
So - If you want to go back to your earlier ROM + everything, use your nand back up. If you want to stay on this ROM and have the apps back, use Titanium.
And once you flashed a custom rom, you can't use Kies anymore to update/back up etc.

Yes you can.
Do a little reading up on going back to stock in this forum. Even though the nessesary stock rom etc are on here, it is always easier to make your own backup and restore from it.

before making any custom changes do a nandroid backup of the whole phone in recovery and then back up your apps and data using Titanium.
Also useful to copy a backup to your PC.
You can flash away and install custom roms, kernels and themes. Most should be fixable by going back to your backup. Having your data etc. backed up to your PC also allows you to re-flash stock and restore the whole system should that be desirable or necessary.
Google backs up your data also if you allow it and you can ensure contacts and calender stuff by synchronization with an online account.
This may sound paranoid, but a thorough backup allows you greater freedom to experiment and play with various custom options up to the point you find the set up you like best.

I was just wondering, I'm looking at changing from power rom to something different and noticed everyone says always do a nandroid before flashing a new rom.
My question is, for all those who regularly change roms how do you restore all your apps and data quickly and easily, is there a way of partially restoring some of it from your nandroid backup as when I go to restore from a nandroid you get the option to restore the entire backup or just a certain part of it??
Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I find it really annoying having to redownload everything over and over, especially with all the problems I've had recently and thought I may be missing something obvious!
Nandroid is for updating from compatable -> compatable roms, as in they will work fine without a fac reset.
Use titanium backup if you're crossing roms that cant be used without fac resets, and only restore user apps and manually do system apps.

I would think you do a nandroid backup in case you want to undo everything and go back to a stable ROM and applications...
I would think that when you try out a new custom ROM you'd back up with Titanium and then simply restore your system data and applications with data after you flash the new ROM... BUT most of the new ROM's come with the instructions not to restore from Titanium as it may make things unstable....
So what do you frequent flashers do?
Do you ignore the Dev's telling you not to restore with TI or do you reinstall everything from scratch?
Is there a better way?

Personally, I restore user apps and selectively some system stuff. Like if I have a newer version of maps, then I'll restore. If it's dialer storage with mms apn etc then no. Every time I try to restore text that way it just screws up my messaging. I do restore bookmark data, launchers, widgets, email, keyboards. Best bet is to set backup limit to 2, backup prior to flash, backup before restoring. restore what you'd like if something is broken, restore data to proper system app. I strongly recommend not restoring dialer storage, just download SMS backup and restore
Over time and experience you'll get what you can and can't restore through titanium backup, from there you can create a custom label for system items that you will restore, and just back those up vs everything
Also, you can restore with titanium backup from nandroid backups now, just in case

I'm loving my GS4 so far and I've gotten it rooted and just wiped data and flashed gruesomewolf_sacs_custom_rom.
My question for ya'll (and forgive me if this is in the wrong place) but how do you handle going quickly and easily between ROMs without brain damage?
What I mean by this is yes I did a Titanium backup and SMS backup before I flashed the new ROM however you still have SO much to restore after you flash a new ROM. I'm the kinda guy who tweaks all my settings, widgets, ringtones and such just the way I like them and I hate when I have to do that all over again. So yes, I am able to restore apps, and some data from the Titanium backups but I still have to go back through and set all my ringtones and all my widgets and settings within certain apps all over again.
That's probably just the name of the game and I need to get used to it if I plan on flashing new ROMs but I'm just wondering what's the easiest way to back the most up and get the most restored?

I felt the same way as you when I switched ROMs. It was such a pain to reload everything customize it the way you had it before.
My solution was simply use TitaniumBackup prior to flashing the next ROM and Batch backup all the apps and app data that you will want.
TitaniumBackup also has a Batch Restore function. So I just use that function after flashing the ROM. I think it can also restore designated ringtones as long as you back up that system file that contains the ringtone selection. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which one that is.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah that's kind of what I'm doing, I guess I'll need to explore Titanium Backup a bit more. I'm curious if it actually backs up and can restore system settings as well. It does a pretty decent job of backing up apps + data but I never know if when doing a restore if I should restore the system data as well because it could be different from ROM to ROM.
