Bricked...Kind of... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I cannot get any ROM to flash. I have tried 3 or 4 different ones. I can still get into TWRP or the bootloader.

This was my old phone and was running Fresh. The problems started when I gave it to my Aunt and the update popped up and it has been jank since.
Any thoughts?

Try updating TWRP to at least version 2.3. Then try re-flashing.

What version of TWRP did you try to install?
Also, do you have a Nandroid backup? If so, try to install it if you haven't already done so.

RUU and s-off.
Problem solved.

This phone is about 2 phones back for me and I am not up to speed on them anymore. When I had it s-off wasn't even an option. Can you possibly link me a tutorial, my brief checking didn't yield a specific process regarding that RUU. Reason I say, is because I downloaded an RUU and it didn't show the phone, would putting it in fastboot correct that?

Actually dont bother RUU. If it has TWRP then just follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163013

I don't care about root or any of the other mods. My aunt will be using the phone, I just need it to work again.

It will work after you do this. Just follow the instructions.

If you want to return it to stock, follow this video:

If you pay for shipping to and from I'll fix it for you.
Then if you decide to kick extra cash my way itll be nice.

Or you can get teamviewer and I'll do it remotely and you can just send cash to my paypal. That way it'll only be down for about 20 minutes?

As an update. Indirect got this working. It took a format to the internal storage. An update of TWRP. A sideload of meanbean and then the standard s-off procedure. Not sure if I've missed out on anything that was required. The TWRP update had to be pushed via ADB.
I have to get logged into my paypal, I will get some funds sent your way. Much obliged.

HTC Unlock tool OTA 2.17.651.5

Hey everyone, I am unable to unlock my bootloader after accepting this OTA. I just got an EVO 3D yesterday and I updated it as soon as I got it. I first checked to see if it was an HBOOT below 1.5, it wasn't so I went ahead and updated. However when i get to step 12 i believe on the htc dev site, I flash the unlock_code.bin and nothing happens just sits there. I read around and found people saying you need to take the 2.08 RUU, I tried that and when it gets to the black HTC screen I get an error 140. I was so excited to get this phone and already downloaded the rom i wanted before owning it. If someone can please help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks

Same here.
The same RUU I used to revert to the .2sw update to unlock two other evo3d's with hboot 1.5, will not work. Im unbelievably frustrated right now as Ive been sitting at this computer for over three hours. Please, if you find a way to downgrade your software, please let me know. thanks
not sure why you wanted to be on hboot 1.50. but shouldnt be a problem to unlock the bootloader, since it was just minor updates and still on hboot 1.50. id just try doing the process again.
i unlocked mine with unlock_code.bin that i used when i rooted my evo 3d for 1st time.....it worked fine.
Tried 5 times and failed..

I didn't want to be on hboot 1.5, I wanted to be below it. But when I first got my phone I checked the bootloader and was already at 1.5. If it was below that I would've been rooted right now...
to be a bit more clear it was hboot 1.5 with an OTA 2.08 when I first received the phone.

1st Check you bootloader .What it says at the top .(locked/unlocked/relocked) if it says unlocked you do not need unlock_code.bin.
Try these from step 13:

That's the guide I used to HTC Unlock. Video helped. There is a post somewhere about needing to Re-flash the stock RUU.exe or Ruu.zip (renamed to PG86IMG.zip) to get the phone past the "nothing happens" step where you're supposed to get the "unlock" option screen on the phone. I haven't seen the 651.5 released as a complete RUU, but you could probably flash the 651.3 RUU, finish the HTC unlock and then run the 651.5 update. Heck, the unlock would probably work after the update, idk for sure.
I have some links and my issue with this below.

I have some tools and files for you to use that will give you temp root and allow a downgrade to 2.08.651.2 rom, hboot will still be 1.50 though. However from there you should be able to unlock via HTCdev method. I gotta upload the files and write the code which I will post up here in a second. I hope you are ok with using adb and fastboot.

[Q] need help! 1.19 unlocked and rooted, still cant install anything

This is my first post so sorry if what I ask is stupid or something. I have searched everywhere and cannot find anything that is current enough to help me. I have hboot 1.19 and my software version is 2.13.651.1 710RD. I'm unlocked, rooted and also have TWRP recovery and I'm s-on. When I rooted my phone it also gave me SuperSU. I'm super lost now because I can't flash any ROMs to my phone. I've tried the charmeleon ROM and also the tranquility ROM but when TWRP is at the end of the Installing process it says that it failed and that there is no md5 or something like that.
what am I doing wrong?

Just disable MD5 check in TWRP, that should fix it. You do want to verify your MD5 matches in something like ES File Explorer. If you don't that will cause many other problems.

Well yes but the Rom will still install without errors. Go to the TeamWin website and download it from there. Grab the zip and rename it and place it on your external sd and boot to bootloader. It will install and then reboot but if you don't have a working Rom remove the sd afterward otherwise you can get stuck in a loop. Do not place it on internal if you don't have a working Rom. The other ways to install would be to use goo manager to install or flash the recovery in fastboot

Alright i'll give this a try, but what zip am i supposed to download and rename? I already have the latest version of TWRP on my phone.
You can check the md5 using a file explorer. Longpress on file and select properties, then compare to where you downloaded the ROM from. If s-on, you'll have to pull the boot.IMG from the ROM zip and fastboot flash from cmd or use flash image GUI app from your phone if you can boot.
Also, I think the disable md5 check in TWRP is under settings.

Internal storage on my phone is fried - can't mount anything. PC doesn't find it. RUU is out of date or would possibly work. I'm using windows 7 and having a very scary ride because the phone won't show up with anything except the SD card - which would be awesome and let me flash the new CM10 - but unfortunately when I go to install it, I get "unable to mount SD card" as a perpetual error message. Even the 3.15 RUU is out of date, also, and though I went through the rooting process and unlocked the device thru HTC's website, I have version 3.16 and the RUU tells me to get the correct RUU and try again. I have to go to work now, if anybody else has been through the special hell I'm trying to deal with please post something, anything, to get my windows able to find my phone, or my drive (internal) to mount to the pc or anything! This looks like a brick (and I've never screwed anything up this bad before )
Boot to twrp and mount storage, then plug into computer. Windows will recognize that it's corrupt and give you the choice to format it.
I still have S-ON. *facepalm*
How can I achieve S-OFF status so that the ROM, which I more or less WAS able to flash using your advice, will be able to quit boot looping and actually work?
So much fail yesterday! that's what I get for trying to quit smoking.... :cyclops:

[Q] Can't get back to stock, worried I bricked my phone!

First off, I've gone through thread after thread hoping to find an answer, but simply have not.
I rooted my phone back in July and don't remember which method I used. I need to get my phone back to stock for warranty (I have a dead strip on my screen) and before I thought, I used SU to get back to S-On, but now I can't get back to stock.
I've tried to run various RUU's, more specifically regaw's version among others, but I haven't had any success. Every time I run an RUU it says that my phone is not connected to my computer. I've also downloaded the PJ75IMG and tried that method as well, but nothing happens.

Got the correct firmware, started the process no problem. Now I've got an Error [155]: Unknown and that's as far as it'll take me. I've tried multiple times, and nothing happens. When the phone is supposed to restart it just sits there as if nothing happened to it at all. The RUU instructed me to restart the phone and do the recovery through the program. Once through, it says that I should now try to start the RUU again. and the same thing happens. Am I missing something here?

Glad i could help you. I had those same issues so it was just in my knowledge. Now i am S-OFF and love it so far.

Last Cry for help !!! $25.00 Paypal Donation for help!!!

Ok, everything started when I relocked my bootloader. I did because I wanted to take the latest OTAs and update radios without going through the Racoon method.
I locked the bootloader and my phone did not reboot , It got stuck in the bootloader screen and will not do anything else.
My hboot is 1.15 so I have tried to run the RUU , but fails every time because it says that needs 30% battery on the phone. I have left the phone charging overnight, more than enough time to charge and the same fricking results. I am just about to smash it and do a claim to my insurance.
IF you can help me to successfully fix this I will donate $25.00 to your paypal.
I can be reached by Google + , Gtalk ( engelsione ) [email protected] or by phone.

There is, but I don't think it's gonna do him much good if his phone restarts every time he plugs it in to charge it. I'm at a loss here. Maybe somebody like Captain Throwback can help the guy get things sorted out.
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
I know you don't want to dirty racun, but if you go to their site and download the RUU for hboot 1.15 from them and follow the steps they list to fastboot the RUU it may get you back in business. It seems to solve a lot of problems.

But if he's plugged in already then powers down. It might work.

Were you on a stock ROM when you relocked? I ask because when I was ready to S-Off last week I was on Mean ROM ICS and I thought to myself, "dinner is almost ready, so I'll just relock now so it's done and S-off later"..well once I relocked my phone that was it. Would not boot up again. I sat there and finished the Dirty Rac process and all was good after the RUU was pushed and flashed.
I was running that same ROM, Meanbean Jelly Bean the latest version, everything started once I relocked the bootloader. Dead on bootloader screen for the last 2 days. I am downloading the RUU on Racoon site and will try that once the download is complete.

This is what i did. First if you hold the power button for 8 sec it will force the phone off. After you charge it enter the bootloader screen and unlock via htcdev after that is finnished install a recovery in fastboot and insrall the last rom that worked for you. Once you get it back up I highly recommend soff i did racoon and it simplifies every thing. Im a new member so i cant post links but if you go on the htcevohacks website and look for the unlocking guide it will take you step by step. Hope this helps and i wish you luck.

Yes, sounds like you did exactly as I did. Get Ubuntu 12.04 running and follow the Dirty Rac steps and I'm sure you'll be in business.

just take it to Sprint and tell them it was doing an OTA update and this is what it is doing. then yr replacement will be free b/c they will write it up as a hardware failure.
Hardware failure is not yr fault.
ru s-off?? yo go to stockROMs.net u will find what u are looking for
rNah ..I am S-ON ... But the Bootloader says " tampered*** so there is No way they are buying that!

Had to get a replacement evo, want older rom back

I was running the Fresh rom for nearly a year and was totally happy with it. I now have a new evo because of a screen failure. I rooted and S-offed it with dirtyracun and flashed rage. I still pretty much hate everything about JB and want my Fresh back. I have flashed the 2.13.651.1 firmware and tried to install the rom and get a false boot after step 2 of 6. I then have to boot into bootloader and reinstall the above rom again. Is there anything I can do to go back?
Anyone?
Are you s-off or s-on?
You might need to fastboot the boot.img... Did you Ruu or just used captain's firmware bits to update to 2.13 firmware?

Shows the HTC boot screen (before it's actually installed the rom) and will sit there as long as I let it. I have to force reboot into bootloader and recover previous rom.

Boot into your bootloader and list the info in the top left corner of the screen. First five lines will do.

No problem. Have you verified MD5 on the download to make sure the download wasn't bad? Also, have you tried flashing a different ICS ROM? I can't think of any reason why you would be having these issues, other than not wiping correctly in recovery (system wipe, flash ROM & reboot).

My bad, I thought from the way were talking that you had reverted to ICS. Try this. Download the ROM again and verify MD5. Make a backup of your current setup, then do a system wipe in recovery, flash the newly-downloaded ROM, and reboot.

Sadly I am on hold with sprint customer service over an unrelated matter so It'll have to be in a few minutes. LOL
How do I verify the MD5? Do I need to flash the RUU again? I'm not a newbie, but I forget it all after I do it. LOL
(woohoo one more post until the time limit and captcha goes away)
Sorry, blatant post count increaser. I need to edit some bad typing. LOL
It looks like Flipz site is down so I am not able to download the rom again. Bummer
In es file explorer hit properties and then show checksum and make sure it matches the one in the OP

Sorry I guess I'm slow. How would I know what to match? It shows the file name.
What version of twrp are you on? I want to say people had problems flashing older roms on newer versions, but I can't personally confirm that...worth a shot though.

Never mind I still had the old root folder. Trying now.

Here's the version I've been using since I got the phone (2.2.2.0), has worked great for ICS and JB alike. Just rename this file to PJ75IMG.zip and put on the root of your external sd card, then reboot into the bootloader and it will install automatically. Remember to remove it afterwards or it will try to install again next time you enter the bootloader.
