[Q] So I just ordered a xperia tablet s... - Sony Tablet S

Hello !
I just ordered the 16gb version (no 3g) for about $320 (a lot more expensive here usually). It's one which apparantly was sent back and got a general maintenance. Got it from the German Sony outlet online store. Obviously the first thing Ill do will be checking for errors and sending it back if its not alright.
I will be travelling to asia for about a year as of august and thought it was pretty fitting so I just ordered before they're all gone...
Now I'm wondering a few things!
Will I be able to connect via 3g with an internet dongle like the huawei E137 ?
Can I connect my 2.5" external hdd without additional power? I read almost everywhere that it doesn't work on all the tablets, but I also think I read that the sony usb port is more powerful and can stream over hdmi without additional power. I know that ill need an OTG usb host cable. It's a Samsung s1 mini with 120gb.
The bigger question is however which updates I should install. I read a few threads on here (very confusing with all the sony tablets being in one place...) and couldn't really come to a conclusion.
I don't really play games, except Id maybe like to play some N64 stuff on an emulator. I mainly want to use it to browse the internet, do hostel bookings etc. and watch movies.
Im sorry if these have been asked before, I couldnt find an answer :/

No you can't connect to 3g. Not sure about HDD.
Note: should have got a xperia tablet z

Second that. Probably better value down the road seeing as support for this will be abandoned soon probably... if not already.

It's not possible to connect to the internet via surf stick?
I've seen videos on youtube where people do it with other android tablets. Is that a xts specific problem?
the xperia tablet z is exactly twice the price :/

The tablet does not have the drivers to run the dongle. The STS has this issue too. Since the XTZ is made by the Sony Mobile team, and not the Sony Vaio team, it most likely will support dongles... IMO it would be worth paying extra for the XTZ because of the much higher standards the mobile team has, its unlockable bootloader, high res screen, etc.

Hmm alright, too bad...
Could it be possible someday? With it being able to root now?
I really don't wanna spend another 250€, I can live a month in India with that money :/
I had a look a the tablet in an electronics market here and I think the display is more than enough for me.
Guess I'll have to live with tethering then.

I'll see if a 3G dongle works with the Xperia Tablet Z.

Instead of a dongle, use a wireless mobile hotspot device. Most are small enough to fit in your pocket, better than having a dongle hanging off your tablet, and there is no hassle with loading device drivers. I don't know what is available in India or Asia, but I'm in the USA and I use a Sierra Wireless Overdrive Pro™ 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot through Virgin Mobile.

XTS root, then you can also use a 3G dongle Since there's a free app in the Market "UMTS MANAGER" Try yourself and also works on 4.1.1 with root.
Unfortunately, USB hard drives consume a lot of electricity - are alternative USB sticks it should be paid to the format ... NTFS is otherwise only with root with the help of the free app "Paragon NTFS & HFS" so you can then mount ...

That sounds like some good news!
I'm still not quite sure whether I should send it back or keep it (hasn't arrived yet but is in transit...would the galaxy tab 10.1" be a better choice? its about the same price here).
Is rooting it risky? Is there any danger to it? Will it be possible with every device or could there be regional differences (mine will be german I guess)?
If I'll be able to root it, that means I can use all the apps there are basically? What about alternate ROMs, will that be possible?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm kind of new to the whole topic, though I did root a smartphone I had
Come to think about it, I could use that as a mobile hotspot maybe... Though I'd have the same problems with being dependent on a second battery :/
I think if I'll be able to root it and it'd be able to use all those customized apps that make software things possible that sony tries to forbid or hasnt enabled at least the XTS would be a good choice for me since it's so cheap.

Rooting isn't risky - it's what you do with the root which is.
When you root a phone, you place a su binary file in the /system partition.
If your a new to this, you WILL brick your device. Don't mess with system files before asking here first :fingers-crossed:

If you read here first before firing off crazy commands its prob safe to root, having said that after you do the risk of bricking is high bcuz no custom recovery and boot loader is locked so you cannot just flash a Rom to fix it. If you are not in love with Sony for whatever reason, and depending on what you plan to do with the tablet, I would either save $100 and get a nexus 7 or spend extra $100 and get nexus 10.

I got one from Woot for $179. I think it's a great design personally. I know it's been trashed but I don't think enough people appreciate it's concept.
The split screen is not that big of a deal for web browsing. Netflix is just fine on the top screen. Having the dedicated screen for the keyboard is great.
The single best thing is the second screen for thumb swiping when browsing/reading. Instead of having to swipe at an angle, you can swipe horizontally. This might not sound like much but in heavy use it makes a big difference.
Right now, I prefer it over my HP Touchpad (CM10), Kindle Fire, and HTC Evo 4G.
Thanks,
Todd Thompson

iam surprised to see a post here ... anyway.. there is no way to hack nd enable calling function in tablet P.. i bought this tab P so cheaply on a online site abt 3 months ago.. nd i like this device nd it suits my usage but the rest of the world rejected long before.. there is not even a dedicated development forum for this device.. no support from sony.. no one knows this device nd no one minds this device.. this is a piece of a rare earth element!!!
so with no support its very risky to do hacking or do somthn as if anythn goes wrong, there is no sony stock repair service, no sony pc companion support nd no devs to help .. there is just tablet S tool to root this device nd may b with tablet S tools may b posible to flash stock or custom roms.. but still i didnt try any of it..want root function.. ! there is no proven result using tablet S tools for tab P. so very risky to do anythn.
there is a tablet P forum at pocketables website.. there too only method to root nd nothn else..
feel free to share anythn related to this device..if any help needed just post here..iam trying to port timescape nd xperia tablet Z launcher nd functions.. ya needed root function.nd i guess i may do it soon.

Search some of my previous posts and other's.
No voice calling but you can try VOIP, the modem card didn't have this function. No having can help.
I did so I could with mine, an AT&T 3G model. I almost got stuck with bricking but survive. Info is sparse on this model on hacking but most things on A model apply.
I updated it to 4.0, root it (said to be impossible from stock but I did,I won't recommend this route,I had only succeeded after many tries), swap out the modem card to an unlocked one, as cannot be unlocked. Lots of work but better.
It is the only tablet that is truly portable and pocketable. But viewing video on full screen is hard to get used to, and viewing in half screen makes it smaller size than my note 2! Ironic. Deep black and nice color on the screen, what a pity.
I also bought it during woot sale, the leather case I chose as part the deal is nice but I usually don't carry it.

[REQ/INFO]Galaxy S3 Japan (SC-06D) root

Picked up my Japanese S3 today and looking to root it. I'm reading that using the I9300 is no go since it is a completely different model number. Specs for anyone interested:

The Japanese version doesn't have NFC, only Japan's long-established equivalent.
Anyway, I love the phone, but I can't wait until some of the geniuses on here come up with an easy way to root it.

Negative. Just tried to scan my edy but no joy. My nexus S grabs it fine however. Cannot wait to dump this stupid docomo rom and get a vanilla one on. That or just go back to my Nexus S.
またSC-06DはNFCを搭載していないので、「Android Beam」を拡張したデータ転送機能「S Beam」も利用できない. Yep, no NFC.
SamMobile has a rom out for SC-06D. As soon as the DL finishes gonna give it a go since I tried the I9300 and it just black screens.
i seen that but i was pretty sure that was just the stock rom...which is really helpful if a bad rom is loaded and need to go back to stock...ive downloaded it too and keeping it to the side for emergencies....
The ability to root and throw CyanogenMod 9 on docomo's Galaxy S3 are the two most important factors in whether or not I will buy it in the next couple of months. Can you please keep us updated on your progress, wtfusernameistaken?

My honest opinion is that the phone sucks. No NFC, annoying uninstallable apps, battery gets quite warm, camera is meh, Kies is basically iTunes with a different layout. I went back to my nexus S and passed the S3 off to the wife. Tried to get a galaxy nexus but it would seem that it did so bad in Japan that they liquidated their entire stock 3 months ago. Guess I'll just have to wait for the next dev phone.
The rom on sammobile is in fact the stock rom, but good to have in case.
Your first sentence had me dying. Lol I guess that sums it up, though. I guess I'll start preparing to buy a One X, though I think I'm going to attempt to get the AT&T version and have it unlocked, as it seems that model is more liked than the international version. I don't even play Words with Friends, so Tegra 3, Schmegra 3 for all I care.
In my opinion this is a beast of a phone...nfc not there..it maybe just no unlocked..the screen is great..the 2gb is a major factor...the fact it'll be one if few phones to receive the jelly bean update..even the little tv tuner which I'm sure the statewide doesn't have..the massive support for it...the camera is great, even though some might choose a third party app...people are judging the phone after a few days of use...the real beauty and love affair comes after extended use...having all this potential and being a root and or custom Rom away from unleashing it is mouth watering...already my s3 out performs my s2 in every way...and it can only get better...every day I find or notice something about this phone that makes it more and more awesome...give it a chance and don't be so basis guys...

If you lack Japanese skills I would be hesitant to root. Some of the warnings that come up will not be in english. Not to mention that all the development on the root was done by Japanese and the "documentation" will be as well.
This is my first Android device (and my first post )
I found the amount of Samsung and Docomo apps really ridiculous.
I want to get CM9 onto the device, so I can have a completely clean slate with no remnants of all the shovelware. As I'm new, I don't know how yet, but I've found several guides and videos and such for doing it for other devices, even the other versions of the Galaxy S3. Unfortunately I haven't found too much specifically for the Docomo Japan version, so I'm a little hesitant to try anything just yet. Is there anything that makes the Docomo device different from other Galaxy S3's, anything I should look out for?
One thing to note for anyone else who bought it here in Japan at Docomo, by default they automatically sign you up for a ton of their crap, iChannel, BodyMo, etc., and each one costs monthly. They're very easy to forget about. If you go digging through the "my docomo" site, through the customer support stuff, eventually you'll find the options to cancel each of the stuff they signed you up for. They really do make it hard to get to.

Samsung s3 and bricks.

Hello,
I am probably going to buy a S3 tomorow,
But i just read that there are something called Sudden death and that chip brick? or if those are the same.
Well basicly i wanted to ask if its safe to buy a S3 or if those are still big risks ? ^
Just wanna know if its recommend and if it doesnt has problems ^^
I probably wont root it nor anything at the start,
First wanna be sure it works properly before ripping the guarantee apart
Probably afterwards i may root and do a cyanogen mod rom on it.
But thats still for the future and doesnt rly matter at the moment ^^
Or if you of course suggest another phone ^^ But i doubt it, I realy think the S3 is the best buy atm for 500 euro,
(Well maybe Nexus4, but you cant find those anywhere in europe lol! or very overpriced.)
Thanks for your time and for being honest ^^
best regards,
DrLuigi!
hi there
there is a search button, you should use it.
there's a big thread about the sudden death in the general section.

Sudden death is supposed to be fixed by the last (or the one before it) update. I don't know anything about chip brick though, so someone else might educate you on that. If all goes wrong, you can "unroot" your device.
I would suggest to wait for Xperia Z, but that's COMPLETELY (=no pitchforks and torches pls) subjective. The main reason is that Samsung is dev-unfriendly, otherwise everything is "good".
btw just a quick question,
Is there any idea about when Samsung launches 4.2.1? ^^
Sorry for double posting
Best regards,
DrLuigi.

It has been updated since 4.1.2 I believe.
Update your phone straight away. Do it through your phone the update. About 200mb file plus some small updates.
I tried doing the update through Kies and the update failed for some reason and had to swap my phone by getting another new one because it wouldn't turn on. STAY AWAY FROM KIES.

The GS3's got a gpu from 2010, confirmed sudden death issues and it's unconfirmed if they've been fixed, lag everywhere because of touchwiz, dialer and contacts take a year to launch when not in memory. They could be forced to be kept in memory if you want to root and mod to fix what Samsung can't. AOSP roms that perform worse than Windows 98 (also because of Samsung's unwillingness to give us sources)
And that's not even half of it.

Ye i looked on Ebay,
They are like all 560 euro even in the UK,
And those under 500 are 470 euro wich are 8gb versions,
And you cant use MicroSDs so you are stuck on like 6gb ? 4 maybe.
And IF its broken its all that emailing and calling, Then they probably refuse and i gotta start going to LG but they dont wanna accept it due its from the UK and not Belgium so i gotta call UK and ship it to there etc etc.
I pretty much like a real shop instead of starting to buy phones that are this expensive through the internet from a diffrent country tbh.

Btw i also saw some Articles just a sec ago that it should be fixed by now,
Hopefuly it is lol..
Due i am buying a 16gb model, (Or i ofc find another model wich would be better)
And they say thats the version that has this problem most,
Well i guess they just get more reports from thats since most just buy that one instead of the 32gb etc..
Anyhow^^
Yes Samsung released a update for android that was going to be for fixing the problems.

Well i guess it will be the S3,
Even tho its a older GPU, I dont think there is a better phone at the belgium market atm,
If you know one please say, but i realy doubt it.
I am again thinking about S3 after reading this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123341 )
Well ofc this doesnt change the GPU,
But still if you know a better phone like i asked above ^ Please tell me, Due i literaly already looked at most of em
Only phone that is cheaper and has simulair specs is the LG optimus 4X hd and i highly doubt that phone has less bugs and problems then the S3.
Thanks everyone for your time again ^^
Best regards.
I might start a rescue brick service if many are intrrested I might give it ago ive fixed a few sofar including my own durring interuptefladh

Going to buy it in a few hours ^^
Of course if you know another mobile please tell me ^^
Under 500 euro tho, and not the Nexus since that isnt in Belgium cheap, Its like 570 euro here on its cheapest aka 650 dollar i am guessing.
btw what are the good roms for the s3 these days ?

Omega and Ultima no doubt. Try both and decide for thyself.

Just bought a iRola DX752 7" tablet

I want to build a android 4.4 kernel for my iRola DX752 7" tablet (formerly known as a Kocasco M752) using Eclipse ADT etc. but I am practically a newbee at this. I figure if I brick it I am only out $50. It currently runs Android 4.2.2 with system updates that I can't count on bringing me up to more current releases, and it runs a Rockchip RK2926 Cortex-A9 CPU with 512MB RAM, 2GB internal SD and a 16GB external SD card.
I have rooted a smart phone without bricking it, but that was with a couple three premade kernels to update with and can not find any for this make or model tablet.
Tablet
Well my friend.. I can help you with that but just a single question.. Is the tablet good? No problems at all? If is good I will buy and we can make even ROMs together...
Just tell me if the tablet is good and what problems you encountered using it.:highfive:
does this thing come unlocked? How hard is it to root and is there any roms?
irola
Let me know if you make a ROM. I want to buy this tablet but it seems like it lags and its slow on the stock 4.2.2 ROM.
Very nice tablet
I purchased two for my kids and one came in the other day. I am very surprised about how well it is made. It doesn't feel like a cheap tablet. I would also be interested in a custom rom for this as well.

I ordered one for my daughter for Christmas. It is still in it's original packaging and I was lurking here to see if anyone had ideas for rooting it. From the specs it seems to have decent hardware so I am confident that it should perform well even though we haven't tried it out yet. I gave her one of my older Viewsonic tablets that's rooted and with a custom ROM. I may buy another one of these iRola tablets if I like the core stock install and then I will join you in creating some root magic for it..
im trying to install windows 8

If you are seriously thinking of rooting this hit me up we can work together. That makes 3 of us working on it. I was trying to hack it to install windows 8.
Did anyone get anywhere with this tablet? Mine came in this morning. It's a little sluggish, but I have decent hopes for it.

Has this development went any further? I'd also be happy to test or help build in any way that I can.
I just got one of these
I just got one of these for my daughter, but it has the Jellybean that has trouble with Wifi... it won't connect to my home Wifi router at all, and drops the connection regularly at work.
So, I want to get a different version of Android on this thing. Has anyone succeeded yet?
I doubt it's the hardware, as I have friends who had the same problem on their phones until they upgraded their version of Android.
I'm unfamiliar with development, but would also be happy to test. From what I can tell, this thing has a memory issue. We need to get something lighter on it.

Out of topic is anyone here familiar with linux.....

Has anyone been able to find out how to get to to the development option
Tap build number until it unlocks it?

Put me on the list of people curious about development for this device. Just picked one up as a gift for a my sister and agree it seems a little more sluggish than I thought it would. Also the screen resolution is kind of poor and was hoping that maybe changing the DPI could help if it were rooted.
i haven't received mine
I order mine back on Nov 22, I haven't received it. I've been itching to root this. Ugh come on N MR send me my tablet. Has anyone have problems with NMR shipping before. ????
Just got mine. It's so sluggish...
I don't understand how, even after a factory reset, this thing is ridiculously slow. I have googled and googled but I can't find any information on how to root this device or even if it's possible yet. I really wanna downgrade the software to something it's more comfortable running. Maybe 4.0.4?
If you haven't received your tablet I implor that you contact NMR ASAP. They didn't send my fiances mothers 3 irola 7" tablets ordered later Nov. until yesterday Dec. 23.
I will also be working on this tablet as I just got it as a present from her So make that 4.
I also just bought this tablet (irola dx752) running android 4.2.2. I have never had a tablet before but it does not seem slow or laggy. I am familiar with linux (someone asked that earlier in this thread) and I am interested in getting into android development. Also happy to test (not intending to brick of course).

Very disappointed in Z ultra will try to return back to Sony

Made the horrible mistake of getting a Z ultra and failed to realize what a horrible nightmare it is to root the device in linux and am just giving up. Feel totally ripped off. Thought I could save money over the Nexus 6 since the screen is bigger and the phone much cheaper but this really the last non nexus phone I'll buy. The clue should have been Sony patching their devices to prevent root, Never again.

I got mine rooted fairly easy.. Not that much work.
This phone was purchased last month. Maybe it was easy for you but try a Nexus next time, no contest. Yes if it was as easy as towelroot made it then yes. With current firmware not a chance.

Stop *****ing and unlock the bootloader if you really want root and cant/wont run windows. This is the way Sony wants you to gain root any way.
Wont [NUT]'s tools work? cant you extract easy root and read the batch files? 4.4.4 is probably the easiest firmware we have had to run a root exploit on for a very long time.
EDIT FFS man http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900 "The tool should work on Windows, Linux and Mac. "

lol i have a nexus 5 and rooting the ultra isn't really harder.
I'm sorry but judging the device based on rooting process isn't good enough. Had been using it i must say this device worth every penny from me. Of course nexus is nexus but z ultra has it's pros points.
I had no problem with root even i could not install the drivers in my ubuntu box but virtualbox winxp solved the problem.

Why a rip off? if it is so difficult, you could've just unlock bootloader. From then on you can root however you want easily. Even without unlocking BL, it's fairly easy to root. "Don't blame the pen if you yourself can't write well". Just sayin'
It's fairly simple. If you think the phones a rip off because your not capable of rooting it., then i don't know what too tell you. You should have done a lot more research, its simple to root it, even if you use linux.

Very unfortunate. I rooted my C6833 within the hour and the C6802 last year through vRoot. Instead of complaining about the device, go and get FlashTool, download and flash a Towelroot capable ROM, after that, go ahead and go custom ROM.
It is insanely easy to root on Linux. I use all the *nix commands from the Android SDK on my Mac instead of OS X Apps like Flashtool and it works a treat. Within an hour of buying my 2nd XZU two days ago it was rooted and running Lollipop. I simply don't understand your post...

I had already given them one solution before their rant, and the first line of the root thread I linked to from the stickie says linux and mac...

If you unable to root this phone then your not ment to use android phone....just a simple task that you can't find and your complaining makes no sense....
I think you should stick to simple phone rather than a real phone like the z ultra...i feel unfortunate for you to not discover the joy of the z ultra....this is the phone i stay for the longest time and still no suitable replacement for it at this time....and I'm not a one model user, i will buy if that phone is comes to my needs whichever model that is...and nexus is not a good replacement for it...
And if your unable to root this, maybe you should only use the original state phone rather than rooted...
What @blueether says. Rooting has never been an issue on the ZU.
Are you serious? I was rooted in less than 2 minutes with Linux. The hardest part was the download. There was a very small bug in the script but took about a minute to correct. Actually this Sony is great with Linux. Samsung is tough to do in Linux.
Good luck

They say "One minute in your mouth, forever in your waist". Here is the opposite:
One sour moment (I am still having issues using the external SD card for storing Apps with Link2SD since 11 GB is not enough for me (any solutions?) UPDATE: Fixed! Now with my 128GB External SD working with Link2SD and FolderMount I can have all the Apps I can dream of ), and forever (until next Android Version), the best phone money can buy.
I love the fact that the native DPI knows it is a semi-tablet, unlike other phones with large screens, that are just zoomed versions of a small screen.
I love the waterproof, plus its a gorgeous modern looking phone and super thin. The camera is really great at detail for videos and photos with moving things, but only when no flash is needed (but not the best at everything else, but still, its the best smartphone for everything else) and the photos with light are so good, it really makes up for the lousy performance in the dark.
I have the Sony leather cover/case, that gives a full charge to the ZUltra, that makes it great for intensive use, which one will like to use, since its a pleasure to use. Also extra magnetic stand at the office, just to make sure I can use it nearly 24/7 non-stop if I fancy. No cables to connect. I truly believe it is one of the best Androids and the best alternative to the iPhone 6 Plus which I use side be side everyday. The ZUltra has my personal number and unlimited internet for it, and the iPhone the working number.
Using the ZUltra beside my iphone 6+ reminds me everyday how far has come Android in making things better than the iPhone, like the nicer Whatsapp, Dropbox, etc.
ZUltra its worth the effort. Whats the point of having something so bad compared with the ZUltra for everyday, just because it was easy to do a once-in-a-lifetime (until next update) thing? Isn't it better to have the best for everyday in exchange of just one difficult moment? (Plus here there are many nice people to help you get through )
Coming from the nexus 4, i must say rooting the z ultra is not hard at all. Just follow the tutorial here in xda or youtube. I buy the phone and got it rooted on the same day. I'm using windows 7 btw. The only down side of this phone is the camera and it have less custom rom and custom kernel compared to a nexus.
